Positive Basketball Vibes/Michigan Live Blogging

I don’t really have time for it, but what the hell – I think I’ll try to live blog the Michigan game tonight. How will Sidney Lowe and his Iron Five handle their first true test? I expect us to play with lots of emotion tonight, and hopefully feed off the crowd. We have absolutely no reason to expect a win tonight, but I’ve had an inexplicably positive feeling all day about this game. Stay tuned!

7:07 – Uh oh, we look like shit early.

7:09 – Just getting worse. You can feel the energy seeping out of the building.

7:10 – I like Michigan’s gameplan to attack our thin frontcourt. We have to rebound much better. Our guys are playing hard, though.

7:11 – Another turnover. We are pretty fortunate not to be down 10-12 points, instead of just 5 at the first break.

7:14 – There’s that 10-point lead I mentioned.

7:16 – Oh, dear Lord. Atsur is hurt. We are so screwed.

7:20 – The announcers get in their obligatory dig at our fans for “running off” Sendek. Get over it, already. McCauley picking up some slack down low.

7:23 – This Jimmy Dykes doofus can kiss my ass.

7:25 – Where is Gavin Grant? I know he’s on the floor…but where is he?

7:27 – Look at Horner! Where the hell did that come from? You have to like this kid’s heart.

7:31 – Cool, a Vinny Del Negro sighting!

7:32 – Doing a good job scoring in the paint, despite being undersized.

7:34 – Great pass by Gavin to set up Nieman. Have to like how Nieman didn’t hesitate to let it fly.

7:38 – Pack leads! And Jimmy Dykes still can’t shut his piehole about Sendek. Perhaps he’ll get a chance to call an Arizona State game this year, and attempt to actually blow him.

7:42 – Nobody should ever refer to Brandon Costner as “Big Lazy” ever again. What defensive hustle.

7:45 – McCauley has savvy, and Nieman has balls. He has no fear whatsoever, and is proving that he belongs at this level.

7:47 – Un-fucking-believable. 35-28 Pack at the half, most of it without Engin Atsur. Regardless of the final W/L mark, this team has the potential to be an all-time sentimental favorite.

8:01 – You know, the more I think about it, the madder I get. It’s not fair to Coach Sendek, either. He moved on, to a pretty decent place. 90% of us have also moved on. Turnover is a major part of major college revenue sports. The only people who give a shit about Dykes’ babble are the State fans watching the broadcast, and it pisses us off. Is that a good idea for an ESPN employee?

8:06 – Dykes mentions Sendek. Drink. Oh, and Pack up 12 with Fells at the line. Love the aggression.

8:10 – Ben McCauley is a beast tonight. Costner takes it back inside and draws a foul. The lead is 15, people!

8:12 – Michigan extends the defense, and Fells calmly pops a three. Sixteen!

8:17 – McCauley is a damned magician. Nice two-man game with Grant there.

8:19 – Can you tell that Dykes had his remarks pre-prepared? He has no idea what to say now that we’re playing so well.

8:20 – Fly, Courtney, fly. We’ll try to push it past 20 after a word from our sponsors.

8:25 – Getting nervous…

8:26 – If we lose this game, I will be convinced once and for all that we are cursed. Come on, damn it, these kids deserve a moment in the sun!

8:30 – Still nervous. That damned clock needs to run!

8:32 – Foul on State for standing in the vicinity of the shooter. WTF? Man, does McCauley ever have quick, nimble feet.

8:37 – OK, now I’m beyond nervous. We just can’t lose this one. I can’t take it!

8:40 – Grant and BC come up huge. I can’t say enough how much I love this team.

8:42 – Michigan won’t go away and my heart rate won’t slow down. We’ve got guts. Is that enough?

8:45 – YES!!!

8:46 – I almost don’t care if we don’t win another game all year. Finish this one, and I’ll be satisfied.

8:48 – We’re holding onto this one based on sheer, raw force of will. We have one guy who can really handle the ball, and he’s exhausted.

8:50 – The refs are trying to kill me.

8:51 – One last time – aggression with the pass. Gotta love it. Still not breathing normally.

8:53 – Grant gets mugged – no fucking call! Down to 6, but I think we’re in the double bonus. Doesn’t matter if UM not going to be called for attempted rape.

8:55 – Almost a TO and a BJD heart attack.

8:56 – Oh my God, down to four.

8:57 – More rugby, with no whistle.

8:58 – We are going to take it. Fuck you, Jimmy Dykes!

8:59 – FINAL SCORE – NC State 74, Michigan 67. ACC 1, Big Ten/Eleven 0.

If you weren’t there tonight then you won’t get it but this was like things once were…loud, rowdy, raucous, fun, everyone standing for most of the game…even me. Folks, our kids played their behinds off tonight with Atsur on the bench with a pulled hamstring. We laid one on Michigan until we got sloppy and too anxious…didn’t burn the clock enough, missed critical freethrows and let Ammaker’s troops stay in the game. But we won and that’s the thing. I wish to god people would let the former coach thing die and shut the crap up about him. This is our team and Sid’s team not that other guy. Let’s go forward with Sid and enjoy the heck out of the ride.

Someone should ask Dykes if Herb was such a damn genius then why weren’t Fells and McC playing last year more often..or more to the point what the hell happened in the NCAA game against Texas with them?! Yea, Herb may have recruired them but it looks like Sid knows how to use them! Thank God for XM Radio and the tv mute button!

Don’t you just know there are some young HS players who signed with an “unproven,” and feeling pretty good right about now!!!

  6. choppack1 11/27/2006 at 10:07 PM #

Wow – That’s all I can say. I think we were spent those last 10 minutes – but wow, just wow.

Dykes and Knessler – I can’t really think of greater scum of the earth than these 2 punks. You know, I thought that our fans were hard on Sendek too – but you know what, to anyone who bitches – if you want to shut them up – just ask these questions:
    1) Did Sendek win a regular season title or ACC Championship?
    2) What was his record against UNC-Ch teams that made the NCAA tourney?
    3) Name another coach at an ACC school who coached for 10 years and didn’t win either an ACC regular season title, an ACC championship or reach at least the final 8.

That’s all – What a punk – that jerk almost sucked the joy I was having watching the game. Then he realized that Sidney might just realize what he’s doing…Fine job Sidney – and thank you for allowing our kids to play. I love watching the hustle and heart of these kids.

    TomA

They did play, and did everything that was expected of them. It’s just that some else’s expections run a lot higher, and they are now following his lead.

Jimmy friggin’ Dykes….rejected by his beloved Razorbacks from broadcasting. I’m sending an E-mail to ESPN. Anyone else on board?

  9. gopack968 11/27/2006 at 10:10 PM #

What a great game to attend! More energy and positive vibes than I have felt in years. Those kids played their hearts out. 13,000+ totally into the game.

    GO PACK!

Come to think of it….if we can run off coaches….who’s to say we can’t run off anyone we choose. My, such enormous power.

  11. charger17 11/27/2006 at 10:13 PM #

I usually don’t stick my neck out like this . . . but I just have to get this out! Please don’t misunderstand me, we played much better than I expected us to play and we got a win that may look very good later on.

With that being said, GAVIN GRANT is the laziest, selfish, most full of himself punk that almost cost NC STATE and Coach Lowe a huge victory tonight.

Before I get killed, please let me explain. First, I completely understand that without Atsur, someone had to handle the ball who normally doesn’t have to. I also understand that the most logical choice is to go with experience. BUT WHY . . . WHY . . . WHY does Grant have to act like if he doesn’t carry the “new” Wolfpack on his shoulders, this bunch of youngsters just can’t win.

I almost took the time to go back through the play by play and find exactly when Grant repeatedly took a hasty shot without making a single pass (I know for sure, this happened twice down the stretch at critical moments), or didn’t do a bleeping thing on defense except stand there straight-legged and watch his man drive the baseline, or not even get the ball over the half court line in 10 seconds.

Instead, McCauley (who I would say has about half the raw talent that Grant does) played the hero tonight because he hustled his rear off and played team ball. I know that Lowe’s hands were tied, and I don’t want to just slam on our guys, believe me this was a great win; but mark my words . . . If we don’t have Atsur in the future, or if we’re ever in dire need of a leader on the floor, Grant has got to play much smarter basketball than he did tonight, or we are going to blow 21 point leads time after time.

BJD, best post in a long time . . . God, I felt every single one of those emotions myself and yelled myself hoarse! Iron Six! I love these guys.

  13. Your AD, Lee Fowler 11/27/2006 at 10:19 PM #

I’d like to go on record in saying that Tommy Amaker is a class act. He definitely broke the Cry-shefski mold. I like him a lot.

  14. buttPACKer 11/27/2006 at 10:22 PM #

    this was EPIC. . . i laughed, i cried. . . i HOWLED. ahooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Mr O 11/27/2006 at 10:22 PM #

Charger17: Give Grant a break. That was his first time playing PG in a big game as the leader of our team. Growing pains should be expected. With as many mistakes as he made, we would have lost the game without the huge plays he did make.

Great win for NC State basketball tonight after all the crap we have received over hiring Coach Lowe!

  16. Your AD, Lee Fowler 11/27/2006 at 10:24 PM #

…besides, Grant is used to having to chunk up a bad shot off of a one on one desperation, clock winding down situation in Stiffdek’s offense.

  17. harrisek 11/27/2006 at 10:24 PM #

Talk about playing clean defense, we committed a grand total of only 10 fouls.

  18. buttPACKer 11/27/2006 at 10:24 PM #

Well, now it’s time to watch Basic Instinct. Its been nice everyone. . . GO PACK!! and one last hoorah for Sidney and The Boys!

  19. highstick 11/27/2006 at 10:31 PM #

Lunatic Fringe calls for firing of ESPN announcers! Lee Fowler to have a press conference to voice support for announcers. Film at 11!

The best way to shut those crapheads up is to beat the opposition, then talk to the sports media who have been supportive. Screw the rest of them when they ask a question! Just say, this is a new day and new era and the beginning of something great again between Hillsborough St and Western Blvd.

Did you ever think that just maybe the “Magical Ghost of the Cardiac Pack of 1983” just might be one of Lowe’s assistant coaches???

  20. redfred2 11/27/2006 at 10:35 PM #

We never trailed in the second half against a Michigan team with four seniors, that Digger Phelps had picked as a final four contender, and yet the announcers were still acting as if NCSU fans were unrealistic for wanting a coaching change. Yet we just won, and with much less horsepower than we’ve had in a long, long time. What does it take for some people to realize the blatently OBVIOUS???

Those were absolutely rediculous and personal statements coming from two announcers, involving a whole university. They were derived from not paying close enough attention to their subject matter over the years, or even the basketball game being played right in front of them at the time, but they were still thinking that they know more about NC State than the NC State fans do.

Those guys make some of Chuck’s statements sound benign.

    ESPN, e-mail, tommorrow morning.

    Al I gotta say is:

    1. How LOWE can we GO!!!!!?????
    2. By-Golly that McCauley!
    3. The “Surround-Sound Defense” is awesome!!!!!
    4. Bring on Psycho-T!!!!!

  22. Mr O 11/27/2006 at 10:43 PM #

Harrisek: It is going to have to be like that all year for us to be in games. We cannot afford to get into foul trouble, so we will probably play a ton of zone all year.

  23. Lunatic Fringe 11/27/2006 at 10:44 PM #

I certainly do not remember the media ridiculing UNC for making a change after 3 freaking years and a 19-16 record. Stupid NCSU fans wanting more from their program…how dare you dream.

  24. redfred2 11/27/2006 at 10:44 PM #

Grant played great early on when we were pushing and being aggressive. He just isn’t patient enough or ready to take over yet when different situations dictate a different style. He struggled late, but he will be taught how to handle it as the season progresses. I’d say, he’ll be getting an ear full, starting this week.

  25. Slader4881 11/27/2006 at 10:44 PM #

Grant did get sloppy late in the game, but the whole team did. I think everyone was running on fumes coming down the stretch. I really like the way everyone played and Neiman is def a fan fave. I was also shocked by Big Ben’s ability to take bigs off the dribble and Costner hitting the glass.

Above all the effort was more than anything I saw with Herb.
