Positive Basketball Vibes/Michigan Live Blogging

I don’t really have time for it, but what the hell – I think I’ll try to live blog the Michigan game tonight. How will Sidney Lowe and his Iron Five handle their first true test? I expect us to play with lots of emotion tonight, and hopefully feed off the crowd. We have absolutely no reason to expect a win tonight, but I’ve had an inexplicably positive feeling all day about this game. Stay tuned!

7:07 – Uh oh, we look like shit early.

7:09 – Just getting worse. You can feel the energy seeping out of the building.

7:10 – I like Michigan’s gameplan to attack our thin frontcourt. We have to rebound much better. Our guys are playing hard, though.

7:11 – Another turnover. We are pretty fortunate not to be down 10-12 points, instead of just 5 at the first break.

7:14 – There’s that 10-point lead I mentioned.

7:16 – Oh, dear Lord. Atsur is hurt. We are so screwed.

7:20 – The announcers get in their obligatory dig at our fans for “running off” Sendek. Get over it, already. McCauley picking up some slack down low.

7:23 – This Jimmy Dykes doofus can kiss my ass.

7:25 – Where is Gavin Grant? I know he’s on the floor…but where is he?

7:27 – Look at Horner! Where the hell did that come from? You have to like this kid’s heart.

7:31 – Cool, a Vinny Del Negro sighting!

7:32 – Doing a good job scoring in the paint, despite being undersized.

7:34 – Great pass by Gavin to set up Nieman. Have to like how Nieman didn’t hesitate to let it fly.

7:38 – Pack leads! And Jimmy Dykes still can’t shut his piehole about Sendek. Perhaps he’ll get a chance to call an Arizona State game this year, and attempt to actually blow him.

7:42 – Nobody should ever refer to Brandon Costner as “Big Lazy” ever again. What defensive hustle.

7:45 – McCauley has savvy, and Nieman has balls. He has no fear whatsoever, and is proving that he belongs at this level.

7:47 – Un-fucking-believable. 35-28 Pack at the half, most of it without Engin Atsur. Regardless of the final W/L mark, this team has the potential to be an all-time sentimental favorite.

8:01 – You know, the more I think about it, the madder I get. It’s not fair to Coach Sendek, either. He moved on, to a pretty decent place. 90% of us have also moved on. Turnover is a major part of major college revenue sports. The only people who give a shit about Dykes’ babble are the State fans watching the broadcast, and it pisses us off. Is that a good idea for an ESPN employee?

8:06 – Dykes mentions Sendek. Drink. Oh, and Pack up 12 with Fells at the line. Love the aggression.

8:10 – Ben McCauley is a beast tonight. Costner takes it back inside and draws a foul. The lead is 15, people!

8:12 – Michigan extends the defense, and Fells calmly pops a three. Sixteen!

8:17 – McCauley is a damned magician. Nice two-man game with Grant there.

8:19 – Can you tell that Dykes had his remarks pre-prepared? He has no idea what to say now that we’re playing so well.

8:20 – Fly, Courtney, fly. We’ll try to push it past 20 after a word from our sponsors.

8:25 – Getting nervous…

8:26 – If we lose this game, I will be convinced once and for all that we are cursed. Come on, damn it, these kids deserve a moment in the sun!

8:30 – Still nervous. That damned clock needs to run!

8:32 – Foul on State for standing in the vicinity of the shooter. WTF? Man, does McCauley ever have quick, nimble feet.

8:37 – OK, now I’m beyond nervous. We just can’t lose this one. I can’t take it!

8:40 – Grant and BC come up huge. I can’t say enough how much I love this team.

8:42 – Michigan won’t go away and my heart rate won’t slow down. We’ve got guts. Is that enough?

8:45 – YES!!!

8:46 – I almost don’t care if we don’t win another game all year. Finish this one, and I’ll be satisfied.

8:48 – We’re holding onto this one based on sheer, raw force of will. We have one guy who can really handle the ball, and he’s exhausted.

8:50 – The refs are trying to kill me.

8:51 – One last time – aggression with the pass. Gotta love it. Still not breathing normally.

8:53 – Grant gets mugged – no fucking call! Down to 6, but I think we’re in the double bonus. Doesn’t matter if UM not going to be called for attempted rape.

8:55 – Almost a TO and a BJD heart attack.

8:56 – Oh my God, down to four.

8:57 – More rugby, with no whistle.

8:58 – We are going to take it. Fuck you, Jimmy Dykes!

8:59 – FINAL SCORE – NC State 74, Michigan 67. ACC 1, Big Ten/Eleven 0.

Nobody’s reading 220+ posts in, but who cares. What a great win by a very scrappy, unselfish ball club. My thought when Atsur went out was like SFN’s: We are so screwed. To go from down 12 at that point to up 22 without the one player I thought this team would be lost without … wow. I can’t say enough. This is no last-place team in the ACC. This team will make some noise in the ACC. I don’t know how far they’ll go; they’re still way thin and have a lot of learning to go, but look out.

Giglio’s comment at ACC Now was that Sendek would have lost this game playing Man defense while Lowe, knowing UM can’t shoot, played a zone and won. Totally correct on that point. Except that in a key possession near the end of the game Lowe really caught Michigan off guard when he suddenly switched to a man. After seeing zone the whole way, Michigan was surprised by it and it derailed their offensive set and it took forever for them to get a shot up on that possession, and they missed when they did…it really drained the clock right there. El Sid, bringin it strong, and so are the kids.

    ACC – 1 Big Ten – 0

Grant was sloppy at the end – but it’s damned hard for ANYONE to be pretty much the sole ballhandler on the court. But to be in that situation AND be playing out of position? I remember when Monroe would play PG a few minutes a game to give Corch a spell (just one year, I think). I don’t think he could have handled tonight’s situation any better than Grant did – and we wouldn’t call him selfish, either.

Gavin Grant fought his ass off. He kept playing defense and fighting for rebounds. We wouldn’t have won without him those last few minutes. We really wouldn’t have.

The number 12 team did our part. Think the other guys will step up.

Grant seemed uncomfortable from the get go. I thought he settled for a couple of jumpers early in the post when I would have liked to see him take his man. Grant is taking on a completely new role this year. We have to give him some time to grow into being the leader of the team. It is a good sign that we won this game and didn’t play a near a perfect game.

Sure wish someone would tell Fells to take it to the hole instead of taking those quick, guarded three point shots.

Did the announcers remind the viewers how Sendak’s team lost 45-42 to an Iowa team that shot

  7. justaguy 11/27/2006 at 11:10 PM #

Did the announcers remind the viewers how Sendak’s team lost 45-42 to an Iowa team that shot 30% in the 2005 ACC-Big10 challenge? What a difference a year (and a new coach) makes.

You guys need to lay off Grant…for good. With Engin out, he is the ONLY player who can handle the ball away from the paint, and he had to do it being guarded close (by a short guy) the entire game….of course he’s gonna make mistakes. I would love to know who you think should have handled the ball after Engin got hurt, especially to the clown who said he should sit…

Wrong! I just read the entire thread.

Wow! Just Wow! A slow start….a late fade…..25 minutes of DOMINATING basketball in between…..Pack milks it for a HUGE win.

    ACC…….you’ve just been served notice.

Yes, but we also love Hope…and Sidney.

Grant played hard and Lowe’s system is freer so Grant has more license. After so rigid a system before, he has to gain some experience at this system as in when to create for himself and when and how to create for others. Lowe is going to be so helpful for him on this…and not discouraging Grant’s creative side right now is the right way to go. Lowe will dial him back if and when we need it, but confident, free players are what Lowe wants. So any critics of Grant need to leave for ASU right now.

Drove from Greenville to watch the game tonight. Great game, tons of fun. Much like it should be. I wish we could have had more peple in the stands. A good amount of empty seats. Maybe some of the posters should have come to the game. Just a thought.
Also, I don’t feel that Grant should catch one tiny bit of flack for the job he did tonight. He did a good job. He fought and scratched just like the rest of his team. GREAT WIN! The Lowe era is in full swing.

no time to read all the comments, hope I dont step on anyone’s toes……..

I am proud of this team and Syd. This team last year would have quit down 16-4. That is coaching! Way to go Syd. He has them believing, something Herb never could do.

Then, down the stretch, again, they hung in there and believed they were going to win.

  16. redfred2 11/27/2006 at 11:36 PM #

When put in it’s proper perspective, this has to be one of the biggest wins in fifteen years, if not bigger than that. I would say it’s one of the biggest of all time, based purely on when it happened and everything that has occurred to bring us to this point in time. That’s coming from a purely NC State viewpoint.

UNBELIEVABLE START TO A COACHING CAREER IN RALEIGH!!! And even before this UNBELIEVABLE WIN TONIGHT!!!

    Good night all.

That loss to Iowa last year was so ugly that it hurt to the core. That was when I reminded myself why I wanted Sendek to leave!

  18. beowolf 11/27/2006 at 11:44 PM #

I’m not going to bash Grant. I thought he played a heckuva game running point. I saw some leadership on his part, and plenty of unselfish play. Did anyone see him point back at Fells in between free throws at the end of the game? I thought that was a nice gesture.

There was no SINGLE hero on this team. They are a TEAM. They all made great plays. I’m really proud of them.

  19. Jeremy Hyatt 11/27/2006 at 11:47 PM #

by the way, we are not that thin a team.
if we get atsur back in the next couple weeks, and the 7-footer is back by at least sometime in January, and we get furgeson active jan 1, that is 9 bodies. carolina is playing 9 bodies.

the key is getting quality minutes from horner, neiman, and bart. 2 out of 3 is not bad.

  20. PhoenixWolf 11/27/2006 at 11:54 PM #

I thought Grant played well. He made some mistakes, but followed up with a few good plays to end the game. I remember a blocked shot in particular.

ESPN should be embarrassed to have such a-holes for commentators, but we know they aren’t

Interesting. #9 Marquette squeaked by Valpo 65-62 tonight. State beat Valpo 78-64.

If you wanted to complain about the announcing, this is the link:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?id=2097428

While I still don’t think we’re an NCAA team (and yes, I am happy to even be muttering those words this year)- I feel a lot better about how things are going now that we beat someone semi-legit (then again, I have a feeling Amaker’s on the hot hot seat)

Hopefully we’ll whip on W.Virginia as well- that would shut a lot more people up. If Lowe gets this team into the NCAA’s, he has to be COY.

Curious- how many TO’s did Grant have tonight though- I couldn’t see it in the boxscore.

  25. Tau837 11/28/2006 at 12:45 AM #

Couldn’t resist adding this, as I didn’t see it mentioned. At one point Dykes strung together the following (I’m paraphrasing): “They sure are hard on their coaches down here… ran off Herb Sendek, a great coach whoh did nothing but win and go to the NCAA tournament… fired Chuck Amato, an alumnus who brought excitement to the program… and now Kay Yow is battling cancer…” Unbelievable.

As for the game, I enjoyed that more than any game I watched last year, except the Cal game (which I watched in a Santa Clara bar alongside a lot of Cal fans). I could not be more excited about the state of our program right now.

As for Grant, agree with the consensus here that he deserves kudos, not criticism. charger17 called him a selfish, lazy punk. We must have watched completely different games, as I saw nothing of the sort from Grant. The whole team stepped up, none moreso than him after Atsur got hurt.
