Worst Loss of the Sendek Era?

I think so. It was disgusting to watch this overachieving Carolina team come in and outwork us like that. They wanted each loose ball, each rebound 1000 times worse than we did. To his credit, Sendek didn’t try putting any lipstick on the pig, admitting that we were outcoached, outplayed, out-everything. And that pretty much sums it up. It was humiliating, and it will take more than a 12-win ACC season to make up for it. And I really don’t want to see the “0 for Roy” streak extended in the ACC semis.

What will make up for it? An Elite Eight or an ACCT title. Anything less, and this season will leave a very bitter taste in my mouth.

More thoughts in the morning. I need some freaking sleep.

TWO LAST THOUGHTS: The game got so out of hand that Quinton Thomas got significant minutes. Quinton f’ing Thomas! And they extended the lead with him in the game. Also, my last fuse was lit when we refused to speed up the offense or press on defense down 18 points with 5 minutes to play. But when Roy sent in the blue team in the last minute, we pressed ’em with our regulars! Way to show some real stones there, Coach!

“I do think he’s beginning to get looks at the top 50 type talent but I don’t see a region or particular area he’s consistently getting players.

New York/New Jersey area would be the closest.

“As for GT, do honestly believe that if Jack hadn’t left last year we wouldn’t be 0-2 against them this year?”

To Herb’s credit, he was 6-0 vs GT every year Jack played.

  3. MurphNCSU 02/23/2006 at 5:07 PM #

^ won more than it has lost?

You mean this year right? Last time I checked Herb doesn’t have a winning record in most vs. scenarios.

  4. Trout 02/23/2006 at 5:08 PM #

    ^ Actually, 6-1. But 4-0 for Jack’s last 2 years.

  5. Trout 02/23/2006 at 5:09 PM #

“You mean this year right? Last time I checked Herb doesn’t have a winning record in most vs. scenarios.”

I meant since he put the “system” in 4 years ago. This is the 5th year of that system.

  6. MurphNCSU 02/23/2006 at 5:10 PM #

Alright I’ll concede the GT point, but I am still envious of there run of a couple of years ago. However, I stand by my WF point. Let’s all pray that Herb can find some coaching ability somewhere on business 40, so that his Big 4 record this year bests his career average.

  7. MurphNCSU 02/23/2006 at 5:11 PM #

What’s Herbs regular season ACC record in the last 4 years? certainly not more than 2-3 games over .500

  8. Trout 02/23/2006 at 5:14 PM #

    9-7, 9-7, 11-4, 7-9, 10-4

46-31, with 2 games to play

  9. Trout 02/23/2006 at 5:15 PM #

    Oops, 11-5

    46-32, with 2 to play

  10. MurphNCSU 02/23/2006 at 5:16 PM #

    11-4?

  11. MurphNCSU 02/23/2006 at 5:18 PM #

Alright you got me. Those are winning. slightly winning records. And the record against the top-half of the conference? I am not interested in a system that sqeaks by for 4-5 place in the conference(in typical ACC seasons).

Even if one concedes (which I’m not) that we shouldn’t expect to compete w/ Duke & UNC every year, our highwater mark for a decade should not be one in which we finish behind the other 2 in the ACC standings & don’t either win the ACCT or reach the Final Four. If Herb can’t accomplish SOMETHING significant in 10 years, I think it’s time to look for someone else who might be able to. Otherwise, we could be rehashing this same old debate about Herb a decade from now (that is if folks still give a damn about NCSU b-ball by then).

It’s interesting that someone several thousand words ago mentioned Rick Barnes because Barnes’ real penchant was beating Carolina. Had he stayed at Clemson, he would have ended the worst streak in college basketball history. If Barnes is available, we should get him. We should do whatever is necessary to get him. Considering he has made Texas (who was Herb-a-licious with success under Tom Pender) a national power and had Clemson in the top ten (in fact they were Number 2 in the nation for a short time), there’s no coach who would fit better in the tough environment the Triangle offers. Ironically, you could attribute the beginnings of Barnes’ successes to LR taking a pass on Terrell McIntyre. Either way, Barnes can recruit, abroad and in NC, he can coach, he can hold his own against Duke, Carolina, and anyone else in this league.

One more point I would like to make is this assertion that Herb has done wonders given the state of the program he inherited. Even if you believe that to be true, there is no reason to believe that after ten years, you couldn’t take the next step. I still consider the ACCT run of four games in four days to be the greatest coaching performance in the history of the tournament. No team has come close since. We’ve got a much better lineup, better players, and haven’t had the one solid big-time win to put our program back onto the national scene. Regardless of the circumstances, if you get to the tourney final, you’d better win it. Three Finals losses and no other significant ACCT or NCAAT accomplishments are eating through this program and this coach like battery acid. My support as a fan can only take so many thirds, fourths, and could-have-beens before it goes dormant. It’s time to win. Against Duke, against Carolina and in the NCAAT!!!

All is not lost guys, lets calm down a little bit. If state gets a favorable draw in the bracket, against teams that they can impose their will on, they will be fine. Only one team has been able to trip up the pack consistently…that’s the heels. they are only one team out of 65. Let’s remember, why this season has been a success. State has not had a losing streak all year…yes it stinks that we lose to carolina, but great teams follow up tough losses with impressive wins, which hopefully will happen on saturday. Do not lose hope on this team, as if they needed fuel to get up for a game, they couldnt have found any better fuel than what happened last night! we will be in the elite eight.

“Aside from the one Gator Bowl year the basketball team has been consistently better than the football team. Why is there this huge disconnect?

I’ll assume that this is a real question (not just a troll) and give my POV. First of all, Chuck won immediately going to four straight bowl games, winning three. (MOC won one BG in seven years.) The Gator Bowl year easily ranks among the top three seasons ever for State. One outstanding year earns big-time “Brownie Pointsâ€?….”

It is a fair question. Football has never finished better than fourth in the conference, even in the “top 3 season ever” you claim above. That doesn’t rank as “outstanding” to me. Half the football teams in America go to a bowl; it’s not a high standard of achievement outside of the BCS. And BBall routinely beats that… has Amato football ever finished higher than BB in a season? Excepting last nite, this season has been full of success, and it’s not over. Football has never approached second in the conference, as the BB team is now doing, and instead of planning a parade everybody is pissed. Yea, it’s a different standard, an easier one for football.

Football has never finished better than fourth in the conference, even in the “top 3 season ever you claim above.

I never claim anything…I draw conclusions based on evidence. In 2002, State’s FB team finished the year in the polls at 11/12….higher than Sendek has managed with BB in nearly a decade.

Why continually compare the two? What purpose does it serve? They both have had very few moments that are worthy of much attention. It seems three groups have developed including the ones that think Herb is brilliant and will succeed and will not be proven wrong, had a strong liking for O’Cain and detest Amato; the group that thinks Chuck is the second coming of Valvano and will succeed, are thankful O’Cain is gone and detest Sendek; the group that realizes NCSU is bigger than Herb and Chuck and are tired of mediocrity and want accountability and want a presence that is dynamic and has a vision for State athletics.

Maybe one day all of these groups will agree on two things that is lacking at State–A vision and accountability.

One of the greatest teams of all times with who I think was the most talented and complete college basketball player of all time, ACC championship titles, two national championship banners, a rich and innovative basketball tradition with the best facilities in the nation in their day, and it all just ceased to exist without any reason. It’s all just been flushed down the toilet and has never been capitalized on. Now I have to hear from people out there who decide that middle of the road is fine for NC State athletics and if anyone disagrees by thinking that this program deserves to live up to it’s great legacy, we are all negative and all just a bunch of whinner’s.

I am and always will be an NC STATE fan, this program deserves better, and should still be at the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference without any question. If you are willing to settle for anything less you have been numbed by the mediocrity of the past fifteen years, or you’re just too young to know how it feels when it is the other way around. If you are too young to remember how it feels to be on a competitive level with the best the in the nation night after night, maybe you should jump on the Duke or Carolina bandwagon for a year or two. That way you will understand how it feels to sit down before any basketball game feeling confident that someone has actually developed a game plan that involves the opposition’s personel and other factors. You would understand the feeling that comes from pulling for a top program and a coach that gives his players an opportunity to win. Stay with that program as long as it takes for you to develope confidence in them. Then you can come back and pull for NCSU again. You can watch the players get shuffled out onto the court for forty minutes with one repetitive scheme. Watch your coach sit motionless, like a deer in the headlights, wandering how other teams have figured how to beat him after twenty plus games of the season with his one game plan. Maybe if you exprienced a great program for once, like Duke or Carolina and like the NC State program once was, then you will have a better understanding of the “whinners like me out here, the ones that refuse to roll over and die, and settle as you have.

We have the worst overall coach in the ACC.

He has the best facilities in the League
He has the best fan base in the League
He “had” the second best basketball tradition in the ACC including the years we were all part of the Southern Conference

He can not respond to changing game situations
He can not motivate a team before key games
He can not develop a kid for the NBA in fact he ruins NBA quality kids

I think he learned how to bilk rubes at Carnige-Mellon, he sure didn’t learn how to coach basketball. By the way what sports did old egg head letter in when he was in college? Answer – none.

“It’s interesting that someone several thousand words ago mentioned Rick Barnes because Barnes’ real penchant was beating Carolina.”

Barnes went 1-9 against Carolina in his four years at Clemson. He went winless both at home and in Chapel Hill, and 1-1 in the ACC tournament. The man was a genius at riling up Dean Smith, but it didn’t translate into wins.

(Where he was pretty respectable was against Duke: 4-5, with three of those wins coming against Krzyzewski squads. He left Clemson on a four game losing streak to them though.)

I couldn’t help but see that motley group of soles that came up with the winning powerball the other day. I think they each won something like $22m apiece. My first thought was if I were ever that lucky I take the cash go straight to Chancellor O and tell him I like to purchase three contracts: LF, HS and CA. Here’s the money now let’s go find some coaches and a real AD!

Also, I can’t leave this topic alone. After rereading all of these posts I must say the comments and logic presented by JohnPack have to be the most disconcerting things I’ve ever read regarding NCSU athletics.

  24. BJD95 02/24/2006 at 8:07 AM #

Fish, good post. I hope that more and more people fall into the 3rd group, as time goes on.

At some point you just have to realize that NC State is a second to third rate school in athletics. Just realize that NC State is never going to be great at anything. We are the Rutgers of the Big East
