Bobby Knight Was Right; NBA Ref Busted for Fixing Games

Sometimes you can’t help but wonder how officials can be SO BAD…no matter what the sport.

It was a few years ago that the NCAA’s all-time winningest basketball coach invited criticism and severely pissed off the NCAA when he commented about basketball officials and the probability that some of them fix games for various financial reasons. Idealists would never want to believe in such behavior. Realists recognize that the behavior is inevitable, but we will never know the truth behind 99% of such situations.

Coach Knight’s comments…and the basketball god’s fears are manifesting themselves into reality today as the AP is just breaking a story originally run by the New York Post. The headline is a basketball junkie’s worst nightmare:

FBI investigating NBA ref in game fixing probe

The FBI is investigating allegations that a veteran NBA referee bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated.

According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered.

The law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on Friday on condition of anonymity, said the referee was aware of the investigation and had made arrangements to surrender as early as next week to face charges. The official, who did not identify the referee, is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

The law enforcement official said the bets involved thousands of dollars and were made on games during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons.

The probe, which began recently, also involves allegations that the referee had connections to organized crime associates. Other arrests are expected, the official said.

The referee had a gambling problem, according to the official, and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance.

The investigation first was reported Friday by the New York Post.

IF this is true, and it’s a major official. The NBA will have a big problem. Hopefully Stern gets forced out by this- it’s time for him to go.

    Ouch!

That’s far worse than the Pete Rose allegations.

Man, the NBA is in such deep crap. Horrible ratings, just an absolutely unwatchable product, a league full of players that the average citizen seems to ENJOY hating, and now…fixed games.

Don’t bother going pro, guys. There’s not going to be anything to go pro TO pretty soon.

I have always thought that the NBA was largely unwatchable….but just assumed that it was me. However, I get subjected to Comcast Sports out of DC and caught part of a round-table discussion before the playoffs this spring. The general feeling was that the NBA regular season had been “border-line unwatchable”….and this from the station that carries the Wizards’ games.

So if they’ve finally cracked the lid on the fix in the NBA, can they start unlocking the mystery behind ACC officiating? Get the FBI on it, there can’t be too many UNX grads there, right?

It is not surprising for NBA or possibly NCAA.

Part of the home field advantage may be the grief the local referee will get if he calls too many on the home team or too few on the visitors. With organized crime in the larger cities, you just never know.

Sounds like this guy got to deep into gambling debt and was cheating his way out of it. If the mob is involved — this guy will be sleeping at Hoffa’s.

What’s the NBA? Looks like Sid made a smart decision.

Remember that all Michael Jordan got for his gambling activities was a 1.5 yr “retirement.” The NBA has been unwatchable for years. When you take a collection of early exits and high school players who haven’t had time to mature emotionally or physically, and haven’t developed any ability to play as part of a team, you get a lousy product. Crooked refs who protect superstars only make it worse.

    There’s a shocker!

I expect to see a bad call or two in most games, that’s human and not to be confused with actually manipulating the score or the eventual outcome for personal gain. Guys like Ted V and Leonard Wertz are/were just sorry officials. Wertz’s old ACC officiating really stands out in my mind.

On to sports on the “professional” level, there’s major league baseball with it’s steriods and the records dilemna. The NFL with it’s latest in M Vick, Pacman Jones and several others who have been slighty punished for things that a normal person would be tossed out on their ear and loose their livelihood’s over. Lastly of course, there’s the NBA, where the throughout the bulk of the season the game is played like it’s a practice session, with a league so full of thugs that they wouldn’t even have a clue how to make an honest living without basketball in their hands.

I’ll stick with collegiate and amateur athletics, I don’t need to watch the overpayed, and so-called “professionals”, waste their God given talents, ignore the rules of the league and society in general, and abuse every privilege they have been granted.

^ Just to add, The NBA especially, and commissioner Stern, should have figured out a long, long time ago that it is definitely in their best interest to vigorously promote collegiate basketball, staying in school and at least trying to earn a degree. It earns their own league more respect all the way around.
