Painful: UVA 14, NC State 7 (Updated 4:20pm)

Boxscore | Recap | Drive Chart

Quick Thoughts:
• Is Amato on the hot seat? Could he survive a loss to UNC and/or ECU?
• Pack musters a measley 7 points after laying ANOTHER goose-egg for the entire first half.
• For the year, NC State has managed 12 combined points in the first quarter through 8 games.
• State fails to score on the first drive of either half for the 7th consecutive game this season.
• On 8 of the 9 first down plays in the second half, State amassed a total of NEGATIVE THREE YARDS.
• State committed four penalties on the team’s first dozen (or less) offensive plays.
• NC State has 4 games left to play: GT, at Clemson, at UNC, ECU (Predict the record in the last 4 games)
• Remember –ECU 31, UVA 21
• Why play Marcus Stone at all?
• What is wrong with our offense?
• Why not play our young offensive linemen more when our ‘experienced’ linemen are so bad?
• Is Marc Trestman‘s job on the line?
• Is Amato’s flexibility to make tough decisions regarding Trestman’s job negatively impaired by his bad national reputation with assistant coaches? Trestman is already State’s 4th Offensive Coordinator in just seven years.
• Anytime that you hold your opponent to only 14 points should yield a victory.
• But, oddly enough – the defense doesn’t get a complete pass because they can’t create turnovers to save their lives. NC State ranks right at the bottom of the country in turnover margin, must like last year.
• What is wrong with our 4th quarter defense when team’s seem to be able to score at will on us on late drives?
• Doc Walker uses favorite term “cyborg” in the broadcast today. Good stuff.
• Does the Cowher dynamic change to bring Amato back next year? You need to read this.
• Now that the Daniel Evans bloom has fallen off the rose we are predicting a lot more empty seats in Carter-Finley for next week’s game than most people have been accustomed to in Raleigh. Read this for great insight into the mental state that we project most Wolfpackers currently have.
• It will be interesting to see if Erskine Bowles and the UNC Board of Govenors will take as active a role in NC State’s football coaching position as they did with Carolina’s? What if both schools are simultaneously looking for coaches? Will the Board set paramaters and guidelines to limit a potential bidding war on coaches or will they just give Carolina first priority by default? Will Jim Oblinger muster the balls to stand up for NC State and risk offending anyone on earth?
• RAWFS asked “How can Amato save NC State Football?”.

Today’s opening drive by the Wolfpack sums perfectly the issues that this team has – it is inept in the first quarter. Entering the contest at Virginia, State had scored a miserable 24 total points in the first quarter. The reason why is simple: a lack of concentration, discipline and execution.

The First Drive In Charlottesville, Exemplified Everything That’s Wrong With NC State Football The Past Two Years.

The NC State offense is abhorrent, atrocious, awful, base, and downright contemptible. They fail to consistently execute.

On their first drive against Virginia, NC State was driving crisply and looking as though they might finally add to that miserable accumulation of points. Then on a short pass that he should have easily completed, Daniel Evans threw John Dunlap an uncatchable pass, ending the Wolfpack drive. A lack of execution, not the Wahoo defense, is what stopped NC State.

But it immediately got worse. Special teams again then let the entire team down as John Deraney nailed to the middle of the end zone. Add in an illegal procedure for an not having six players at the line of scrimmage, and the Wolfpack left the Cavaliers at their 25 yard line. From the near midfield.

I cannot believe it…How can be beat BC, Fla State, and lose to team that beat ECU? Our season is rapidly beoming a train wreck!

  2. harrisek 10/28/2006 at 3:09 PM #

I’ve gotten very cynical about Wolfpack football. It appears I’m not alone.

  3. NCSUDude17 10/28/2006 at 3:10 PM #

I am begining to despise the phrase “Hot Seat”. After every single loss, Hot Seat, Hot Seat, Hot Seat. No, he isn’t because who would we hire? Unless Bill Cowher is a sure thing, in the bag, than you can’t fire Chuck. The coaching cupboard is essentially bare.

  4. NCSUDude17 10/28/2006 at 3:10 PM #

Also, SWEETS, you must be new to Wolfpack Football.

  5. 98st8 10/28/2006 at 3:12 PM #

i.e. Matt Doherty …fired, John Buntin… fired………..WE JUST WAIT IT OUT until the coach leaves on his own…Herb Sendek

say what you want about Carolina… when they sence things are going down hill in a hurry they have the cahones to make a change

  6. 98st8 10/28/2006 at 3:13 PM #

where is Mary Anne Fox when you need her…. she was the only one over there that had balls

Remaining record: 0-4 (the offense is showing me nothing to think otherwise)

Hot Seat: Yes. If he doesn’t fire Trestman then Chuck needs to go.

Stone: There is no logical reasoning to play him. It’s the move of a desperate Coach. See last year when we did the same thing with Davis/Stone.

Offense: What’s wrong with it is the playcalling or lack there of. Add in lack of teaching by the offensive coaches to the players and you have what you currently see on the field.

Defense: Not a clue other then I think we go in to a try not to lose or give up the big play. Playing not to lose on defense gives you the same results as offense. LOSING.

no offense SWEETS… but ECU has the ability to beat any team aside from GT and Clemson this year.

our team is a wreck… our offense is horrible… our defense plays good, until they HAVE to.

    end of story.

  9. IrishTiger 10/28/2006 at 3:18 PM #

Chuck needs to do the right thing…which he won’t and fall on the sword for the WolfPack Football program…as it stands we would have to run the table on our final 4 games just to end 7-5 with a minor bowl…I bet Vegas would call that a Very Long Shot…it is looking more like 5-7 and that is being positive!

SFN: Can we please start talking about “mystery recruits” in basketball again? Last night I was an enthusiastic proud state fan. Now, CTC brings me back to reality.

If I were Lee Fowler, excuse me, an AD in general, I’d have Chuck Amato meet me in my office after he got back to Raleigh this evening. To me, this team is playing as far under it’s own talent level as any we’ve seen.

Chuck needs an ultimatum. Trestman needs a boot up his….

  12. packpigskinfan23 10/28/2006 at 3:25 PM #

    ^ass

  13. McPete 10/28/2006 at 3:26 PM #

That’s now three straight games where Evans has thrown a 4th quarter interception, all in tight games. The honeymoon has ended.

  14. packpigskinfan23 10/28/2006 at 3:27 PM #

Trestman needs a RedBull and a drill sargent screaming in his ear.

    Amato needs a Coaches Coach!!

  15. McPete 10/28/2006 at 3:33 PM #

Seemed like all but one of State’s eight or nine penalties were on the offense. unexcusable and someone’s head HAS to roll for this. amato praised the o-line three weeks ago and now they’re completely regressing. a double team on Long and he still gets Evans. i think the announcer called it ‘pathetic’. my thoughts exactly.

  16. IrishTiger 10/28/2006 at 3:39 PM #

    – Amato is on the HOT Seat
    – 5-7 Losing record…Great…NOT!
    – No reason to play Stone unless Evans was hurt…he wasn’t
    – Trestman isn’t the Head Coach…Amato is…Get Cowher to commit and
then make Amato the Defense Coach if he could swallow that job.
    – Poor coaching is the reason why the Offense is poor
    – 4th Qtr. Defense is tired and playing to much Prevent
    – I can only pray to GOD that the powers to be have talked with Cowher
and have an agreement…we can’t Fire Amato as much as I want us to
untill we have Cowher as our next Head Coach…Ink it FOLKS I Beg You!

  17. Wulfpack 10/28/2006 at 3:40 PM #

I’m going to reserve judgement before I comment because I am really pissed right now…

If anyone here thinks ECU and UNC are going to be pushovers then you are sorely mistaken. My prediction is ECU hands it to us. Ok, that’s all for now, time to go finish my fifth of whiskey.

  18. NCSUDude17 10/28/2006 at 3:40 PM #

McPete, Daniel Evans was NOT the reason we lost today. Dude threw for over 200 yards, he would have thrown for more id the O-Line knew what they were doing. Who do you think we put in, Stone? Save Burke for next year if we need him. Oh and Evans’ picks against UMD were early in the 3rd and with 9 minutes to go in the 4th, respectively. Not “late in the game”. Evans is not our problem, our O-Line, our coaching, and our kickers are our problems.

  19. Wulfpack 10/28/2006 at 3:41 PM #

^kickers. Haha. Give me a break. Good teams don’t need a freaking kicker.

  20. WolfPup35 10/28/2006 at 3:44 PM #

Yes, all but one of the penalties were on OFFENSE!! Is that saying that the O-line is bad, scared, or just too amped up? Is the defense soft? A few seasons ago, we had all kinds of defensive penalties, but won games. That showed a highly aggressive defense (ie FSU), now we seem to have a jumpy offense, and a soft defense. hmmmm….

On the Cowher front, I was talking to a business partner of mine and his brother in law’s dad is on the board of trustees at NCSU. The rumor is that Cowher has already been speaking with the university, and the quote I was given went like…”Whenever you’re ready, I’m ready” (Cowher to NCSU). hmmmm……are those funeral bells I hear?

  21. StateFans 10/28/2006 at 3:44 PM #

We will be LUCKY to reach IrishWolf’s projected 5-7.

  22. packpigskinfan23 10/28/2006 at 3:44 PM #

but really… wtf is up with Deraney?!?!?!

sure we cant put it all on his shoulders, but damn… thats some kickers curse he picked up!!!

  23. NCSUDude17 10/28/2006 at 3:45 PM #

“^kickers. Haha. Give me a break. Good teams don’t need a freaking kicker.”

Tell that to the New England Patriots.

  24. redfred2 10/28/2006 at 3:48 PM #

“Evans has thrown a 4th quarter interception, all in tight games. The honeymoon has ended.”

That interception should have happened in the first quarter, when we were pressuring the Cavaliers defense. Not when we were playing in desparation to come from freaking behind again, in the fourth quarter.

Evans could have thrown one or two more earlier interceptions and we could have still come back. Just not in the final minute, with no other options.

    This offense is a joke.

  25. WolfPup35 10/28/2006 at 3:48 PM #

^agreed, maybe he’s got foot or leg issues that we don’t know about.
