Painful: UVA 14, NC State 7 (Updated 4:20pm)

Boxscore | Recap | Drive Chart

Quick Thoughts:
• Is Amato on the hot seat? Could he survive a loss to UNC and/or ECU?
• Pack musters a measley 7 points after laying ANOTHER goose-egg for the entire first half.
• For the year, NC State has managed 12 combined points in the first quarter through 8 games.
• State fails to score on the first drive of either half for the 7th consecutive game this season.
• On 8 of the 9 first down plays in the second half, State amassed a total of NEGATIVE THREE YARDS.
• State committed four penalties on the team’s first dozen (or less) offensive plays.
• NC State has 4 games left to play: GT, at Clemson, at UNC, ECU (Predict the record in the last 4 games)
• Remember –ECU 31, UVA 21
• Why play Marcus Stone at all?
• What is wrong with our offense?
• Why not play our young offensive linemen more when our ‘experienced’ linemen are so bad?
• Is Marc Trestman‘s job on the line?
• Is Amato’s flexibility to make tough decisions regarding Trestman’s job negatively impaired by his bad national reputation with assistant coaches? Trestman is already State’s 4th Offensive Coordinator in just seven years.
• Anytime that you hold your opponent to only 14 points should yield a victory.
• But, oddly enough – the defense doesn’t get a complete pass because they can’t create turnovers to save their lives. NC State ranks right at the bottom of the country in turnover margin, must like last year.
• What is wrong with our 4th quarter defense when team’s seem to be able to score at will on us on late drives?
• Doc Walker uses favorite term “cyborg” in the broadcast today. Good stuff.
• Does the Cowher dynamic change to bring Amato back next year? You need to read this.
• Now that the Daniel Evans bloom has fallen off the rose we are predicting a lot more empty seats in Carter-Finley for next week’s game than most people have been accustomed to in Raleigh. Read this for great insight into the mental state that we project most Wolfpackers currently have.
• It will be interesting to see if Erskine Bowles and the UNC Board of Govenors will take as active a role in NC State’s football coaching position as they did with Carolina’s? What if both schools are simultaneously looking for coaches? Will the Board set paramaters and guidelines to limit a potential bidding war on coaches or will they just give Carolina first priority by default? Will Jim Oblinger muster the balls to stand up for NC State and risk offending anyone on earth?
• RAWFS asked “How can Amato save NC State Football?”.

Today’s opening drive by the Wolfpack sums perfectly the issues that this team has – it is inept in the first quarter. Entering the contest at Virginia, State had scored a miserable 24 total points in the first quarter. The reason why is simple: a lack of concentration, discipline and execution.

The First Drive In Charlottesville, Exemplified Everything That’s Wrong With NC State Football The Past Two Years.

The NC State offense is abhorrent, atrocious, awful, base, and downright contemptible. They fail to consistently execute.

On their first drive against Virginia, NC State was driving crisply and looking as though they might finally add to that miserable accumulation of points. Then on a short pass that he should have easily completed, Daniel Evans threw John Dunlap an uncatchable pass, ending the Wolfpack drive. A lack of execution, not the Wahoo defense, is what stopped NC State.

But it immediately got worse. Special teams again then let the entire team down as John Deraney nailed to the middle of the end zone. Add in an illegal procedure for an not having six players at the line of scrimmage, and the Wolfpack left the Cavaliers at their 25 yard line. From the near midfield.

“I refuse to waste another beautiful Saturday watching State’s games live. I will record them and check out the scores before watching and do something more productive, enjoyable and less painful on Saturdays.”

    ——-

At least ya’ll aren’t having to drop $21.95 on PPV to see the PACK ruin these magnificent fall Saturdays!

No more. I’ll wait to see the highlights on the CTC Show.

Can someone explain why we are not featuring Andre Brown in our offense?
If I am not mistaken, every game Andre has run over 100 yds or maybe even 85 yds we have won(dating back to last season). He was the 4th back last year (go figure) and the best back and he comes in and gets significant playing time halfway thru the season and finishes with about 700 yds.
And why hasn’t the coaches realized almost every time they give Brown a lead blocker(FB) to take out the first defender that shows Brown gets a big gain?
I have seen 3 games live this year with extremely good seats and I can predict what the opposing team is about to do to us. Now I have far less knowledge than our million dollar staff but you would think they can predict the play calling much better…..every opponent seems to predict ours very well!!!!

well it seems that this is all my fault. the wolfpack has only won the games that i have attended this year. I went to app st, bc, and fsu. I sold wake, akron, and road game at vu!!!

The whole game (and season) can be summed up in one play against UVA……We have a 4th and inches (on our own twenty); time out is called by HC/OC to get the “right play” called (the idea being to to pull UVA offsides…RIGHT ?)…………………

What happens…..? We pull ourselves offsides !!!!!

CLASSIC WOLFPACK (Amato) FOOTBALL !!!!! Count on 3-9 season

No, we’ll probably beat GT and Clemson, and be told how strong the program is. Then, we’ll go out and lay a couple of eggs against you know who and ECU, and then be told how many games the program has won recently. Fans will point to a dismal overall ACC record and a lack of discipline. Head coach will tell us that not too many other teams were able to beat BC and FSU and GT and Clemson and how the future is bright, etc. Fans will then say well not too many teams lost to Akron and S. Miss and Maryland and UVA and UNC and ECU. And it’ll go on and on and on. Or, we will just lose out and put an end to all of this misery. Or not…I’m pulling my hair out here. Never a dull day in NCSU athletics.

Oh, I did forget to mention one other situation where Trestman made a major bonehead move. In the first half Virginia shanks a punt so we have pretty good field position, which I believe was just shy of the 40. What do we do? We put in Stone who runs an option and waits to pitch it until he has his running back about two feet away and pinned to the sideline and a fumble ensues. Fortunately we get it back, but lose about 10 yards. Then Stone goes back does his quick check of the field as if to pass and of course pulls it down and loses another 3 yards. And, now I can’t remember because I think this was the point where I threw the remote some where that I pictured Trestman standing and it hit the power button, but I believe it was another sack or at the most an incompletion. Now, tell me, please, what did Daniel Evans learn from watching that mess? That it’s possible for Trestman to call even worse plays for another quarterback? That we know how to squander precious field position to prove Evans has to be the starting QB?

And lest we forget, against Maryland, down 20-6, less than 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Trestmen’s offense was in no hurry getting out of the huddle, but seemed to be using as much time as possible. If not for Blackmon’s punt return, that game isn’t even close.

Are we getting to the point where Carolina was a few weeks ago — rooting against their own team to force the issue?

If we beat GT and/or Clemson, then Amato will get a contract extension.

If he loses both the team will have 7 losses.

God help him if he loses to UNC or ECU. State fans won’t.

    dj9686 Good stuff!

I’m saying that if Amato wins one more game in the ACC, he’ll probably be around next season. Probably will be regardless. I don’t know if anyone else felt like it yesterday, but it was looking like they are walking the fine line and just on the edge of lossing the players. Chuck has definitely lost about 98% of his general fan support anyway.

Just like the fourth quarter drive and that first leaping grab by Dunlap, then catch in heavy traffic by Blackman, and then the resulting TD. It’s like, “Oh yeah, that’s right, those guys, I forgot we had those guys,” or “Alright, I guess so, you’re right the clock is winding down, go ahead and use those guys if you have to.” It’s much too little, much too late, when every asset is there waiting to be used from the start of the game.

If they rise up and beat Clemson or GT, or even win out, it would just further confirm that we have the talent, as we’ve seen when permitted, but these coaches are clueless as to how, or just plain afraid, to use it.

Chuck Amato has painted himself into a corner of his own making, and created his own “no win,” situation regarding his future as a head coach. The likelihood of NCSU making anything happen at the end of the season is very slim, but Amato has already sealed the deal.

But to hell with the overall progress of the program, this is NCSU, he should get three more years, irregardless.

It would be interesting to see how many of the experts on here were saying the same things about our former bball HC after six/seven years. If you recall that situation lasted for “ten” years.

I will join the parade if something hasn’t happened by year ten…until then Mr. Murphy and the other high rollers should back our current HC in fball.

Amato will be fine at the end of the season. He’s a great defensive coach. But I think he should separate himself from the bumbling idiot Trestman as soon as possible. I still believe that with a little maturity and the right OC the offense can thrive and our team can at least be in the mix for the ACC title most years.

  12. SixPack 10/29/2006 at 6:51 PM #

    We’re actually 2 plays away from being 1-7 !!!!!!

  13. legacyman 10/29/2006 at 8:55 PM #

One can see the glass as half empty or half full. We can look at most any season under whatever coach and claim that for one lucky break per game we would be winless or have very few losses…[pretty worthless to do this as the W/L records are based on what really happened rather than what might have happened].

Too many try to over analyze what is happening. Do any of us know what defensive sets Daniel sees when he is set to take the snap or what last second adjustments are made by the defense. Give the kid a break…he got us further than most of us were expecting when he took his first snap…give him some time to develop and, yes, that means we will probably eat some more losses.

We can criticize the coaches but leave the players alone unless we see someone actually dog it. I haven’t seen that this year and don’t expect to.

How many folks felt last year that we would stink after losing half a dozen defensive starters to the NFL…anyone really think we would be good? Unfortunately I predicted a .500 season and even that looks unlikely now. Still, I will continue to send my money to the WPC, attend all home games and pull hard for my team…always…been doing it since early sixties and see no reason to stop.

I would like to hear from some former players, ones who actually know something about the game, and get their views on what needs to happen.

I don’t know, but as a business man, I would not tolerate working for months and months on end producing a product, only to have some dunce continually dropping the finished off the docks on delivery day.

If the offense is as far off track as it appears, and it is Trestman’s responibility and ultimately his fault, then I would expect to see some sign of dissatisfaction coming from Amato on gameday. The fact that Amato just goes through the motions and trots off the field with another loss, leaves me to believe that Coach Mark Trestman is doing exactly what he is TOLD to do.

I was there and it was painful to watch. Fortunately had a great tailgate.
I thought Groh was a pretty sorry coach, but this is my second UVa game this year due to may kids attending there and UVa has IMPROVED in the last month. We obviously haven’t. State is embarrassing.
Actually thought Evans looked OK when he had time. Yeah he made some mistakes, but he seemed poised to me. I thought he made a couple of really good plays on our touchdown drive.
Surely Amato has to go, but we all know that at State there will be no decision made for a long time. Unless he resigns (which he won’t), we will wallow in the mud for another year or two before anything is done. And I hear you about who could we hire. Hell, we’d have to hire Bunting to get any worse.

I’ve said it before in both football and basketball, but the KIDS/players who are sent out to play a game with morons directing them, ARE NOT TO BE BLAMED!!! Evans is good, he has great potential and all kinds of poise. He’s learning and he IS ALLOWED to make mistakes just like everyone else. It just shouldn’t be all on him late in the games. Mistakes are a factor in every game, but not with this coaching staff, they have no ability to limit them and have nothing to offer that will offset them after they occur.

The coaching staff had basically written off the QB position as a non factor last season and leading into this season. In the early games this season they were playing football, losing games, and barreling along as if the QB position didn’t matter. It did. Three lack lustre preformances later, that reality finally slapped them square in the face. Then, out of no where, they switch to a young and inexperienced Daniel Evans, put everything on his shoulders, and expect that KID to come through LATE, in every game. I think that’s pretty telling about the coaching staff, and their lack of foresight. No one kid, can pull that many rabbits out of his hat.

I look at the Stone/ Evans comparison as a microcosm of Chuck Amato’s philosophy. Big, physically impressive, Marcus Stone signed early, smaller, more skilled, Daniel Evans getting on the team at the last moment, by the skin of his teeth. Then Evans just sits, even in losses. Chuck is great spotter of raw physical talent and athleticism, as is very well proven. What Amato does is to seek out and surround himself with big, fast, and impressive athletes, then he looks out over the practice field, gets swept up in the hype thinking that he is creating a jugernaut, and then forgets that their is mental aspect of the game.

Daniel Evans personifies what this team is lacking.

In basketball there were no adjustments, it was all pre planned and mental, forget all about the athleticism. Now, in football, it’s use the athleticism but only if you have to, LATE. The mental aspect along the ability to make adjustments, are both, non existent.
