Painful: UVA 14, NC State 7 (Updated 4:20pm)

Boxscore | Recap | Drive Chart

Quick Thoughts:
• Is Amato on the hot seat? Could he survive a loss to UNC and/or ECU?
• Pack musters a measley 7 points after laying ANOTHER goose-egg for the entire first half.
• For the year, NC State has managed 12 combined points in the first quarter through 8 games.
• State fails to score on the first drive of either half for the 7th consecutive game this season.
• On 8 of the 9 first down plays in the second half, State amassed a total of NEGATIVE THREE YARDS.
• State committed four penalties on the team’s first dozen (or less) offensive plays.
• NC State has 4 games left to play: GT, at Clemson, at UNC, ECU (Predict the record in the last 4 games)
• Remember –ECU 31, UVA 21
• Why play Marcus Stone at all?
• What is wrong with our offense?
• Why not play our young offensive linemen more when our ‘experienced’ linemen are so bad?
• Is Marc Trestman‘s job on the line?
• Is Amato’s flexibility to make tough decisions regarding Trestman’s job negatively impaired by his bad national reputation with assistant coaches? Trestman is already State’s 4th Offensive Coordinator in just seven years.
• Anytime that you hold your opponent to only 14 points should yield a victory.
• But, oddly enough – the defense doesn’t get a complete pass because they can’t create turnovers to save their lives. NC State ranks right at the bottom of the country in turnover margin, must like last year.
• What is wrong with our 4th quarter defense when team’s seem to be able to score at will on us on late drives?
• Doc Walker uses favorite term “cyborg” in the broadcast today. Good stuff.
• Does the Cowher dynamic change to bring Amato back next year? You need to read this.
• Now that the Daniel Evans bloom has fallen off the rose we are predicting a lot more empty seats in Carter-Finley for next week’s game than most people have been accustomed to in Raleigh. Read this for great insight into the mental state that we project most Wolfpackers currently have.
• It will be interesting to see if Erskine Bowles and the UNC Board of Govenors will take as active a role in NC State’s football coaching position as they did with Carolina’s? What if both schools are simultaneously looking for coaches? Will the Board set paramaters and guidelines to limit a potential bidding war on coaches or will they just give Carolina first priority by default? Will Jim Oblinger muster the balls to stand up for NC State and risk offending anyone on earth?
• RAWFS asked “How can Amato save NC State Football?”.

Today’s opening drive by the Wolfpack sums perfectly the issues that this team has – it is inept in the first quarter. Entering the contest at Virginia, State had scored a miserable 24 total points in the first quarter. The reason why is simple: a lack of concentration, discipline and execution.

The First Drive In Charlottesville, Exemplified Everything That’s Wrong With NC State Football The Past Two Years.

The NC State offense is abhorrent, atrocious, awful, base, and downright contemptible. They fail to consistently execute.

On their first drive against Virginia, NC State was driving crisply and looking as though they might finally add to that miserable accumulation of points. Then on a short pass that he should have easily completed, Daniel Evans threw John Dunlap an uncatchable pass, ending the Wolfpack drive. A lack of execution, not the Wahoo defense, is what stopped NC State.

But it immediately got worse. Special teams again then let the entire team down as John Deraney nailed to the middle of the end zone. Add in an illegal procedure for an not having six players at the line of scrimmage, and the Wolfpack left the Cavaliers at their 25 yard line. From the near midfield.

It doesn’t matter who we play at QB, he has to be standing upright to complete passes.

  2. WolfPup35 10/28/2006 at 3:50 PM #

The west coast style of play is over rated and out dated.

Chalk me up to Officially Sick of This Shit.

I don’t think the Offensive Coordinator is the problem. Three straight OC’s can’t be the problem.

Also, I see no way that we can sit idly by with a talented team not being able to score on some of the ACC’s worst defenses, and that can get beaten by MAC and CUSA teams. Furthermore, I don’t know how in the world we could accept that AND let UNC score Bill Cowher.

With as bad as this team looks on the road, I wince at the thought they they close the season out with two road games in Chapel Hill and Greenville.

The last three games have been simply excruciating to watch.

    The recipe:
The offense cannot move the ball for much of the game.
    Playcalling seems muddled and predictable.
Dumb penalties negate far too many gains or good defensvie plays.
Late in the game the offense gels and looks strong.
We (the good guys) make a valiant comeback.
The defense cannot hold, as they are tired and trying to not give up a homerun.
The pressured young quarterback, on the verge of being the hero, forces a pass into coverage and the game ends.
    Repeat.

OK, I’ve kept this to myself, but here goes my dream coaching staff at NCSU….
    Head coach….Cowher
    Offensive Co…..Logan
    Defensive Co…Amato
    QB coach…O’Cain
    RB Coach…Portee
any other position is negotiable, and I know I’ll get some laughs with the MOC selection, but look what he did with Kramer, Harvey, Barnette, Durant, Whitehurst, and he initially recruited Rivers….he can’t be a HC or an OC, but he does a hell of a job with QB’s, and nobody can tell me otherwise.

If Amato has any chance of returning next year Trestman should not be on the field next next Saturday. I wouldn’t think Amato would sacrifice his job and not make that change by tonight.

If Cowher wants to come to State there is nothing at this point that should stop that from becoming a reality. If Cowher wants a year off you give Amato another year but he must have an offense and I can’t imagine that you would wait until the end of the season to get Trestman out.

Deraney has two jobs (not rare but enough pressure for the average family bear) and he has done a Fantastic job up until this year…the main problem is that his dad is expected to die soon…He is very close with his father and…well, hell how many of us could peform at 100% if our father was expected to die and at his age…the mind is a terrible thing to mess with when you’re dad means the world to you…You have to look directly at the coaching staff and the head of that team.

    “The recipe”

And just this week I was joking about Wolfpack 3.0 — the third version of the team this year, that gets down in the first half, then scores just enough in the second half to tie, but for allowing one more score in the second half that provides the losing margin.

This game has pretty much ensure a losing season.

  9. Mike 10/28/2006 at 4:04 PM #

What does everyone have against Trestman? He is a genius and has NFL experience.

the 4th quarter maryland interception was a terrible pass and it did negate a turnover. today’s interception was on 3rd down. no one was open and he still had a down to try again if he threw it way. i’m not saying that he’s the problem, but part of the problem as a member of the offensively-challenged offensive unit. i don’t think there is a better option at quarterback this year, but maybe they should have stopped trying to run the ball off tackle on Long’s side of the defense. he’s freaking eating up the gaurd’s and tackles trying to block him. why run the ball to his side of the defense? and that trap run, fake WR reverse play that i see in every single game. how do you throw the defense of with a fake trick play, when you never actually run the reverse play anyway?

  11. gopack968 10/28/2006 at 4:13 PM #

^ perhaps because his offense seems to, uhh… suck?

Perhaps accceptable against top teams, but these last two losses have been to two of the worst defenses in the ACC>

  12. Mike 10/28/2006 at 4:16 PM #

The INT was late snd 3rd down, but there were still 3 blue shirts near the 1 white shirt. Thrown into coverage, not picking on DE here, but the kid is still young. Maybe if we threw more earlier, might open some things up. If memory serves me correctly, 4th qtr pick last week was also into triple coverage across the middle. Only DE’s 5th game, to me this comes from no help from the OC.

  13. redfred2 10/28/2006 at 4:16 PM #

It would be hard to see Chuck leave no matter what happens with the rest of the schedule this season. But I am not going to let my heart rule my head like so many others here in Wolfpack territory.

I don’t know what or who is out there coaching wise, but if Chuck doesn’t have the good sense to make a drastic change as far as the OC goes in about the next five minutes, which would already be way too late for his own good, then he just needs to pack ’em up and roll on outta town.

  14. Mike 10/28/2006 at 4:17 PM #

Gopack, exactly right on the worst defenses. But we are sooooo predictable we are pretty easy to stop.

  15. beowolf 10/28/2006 at 4:30 PM #

Yeah, what’s everyone’s deal with Trestman? He wears glasses; he’s smart.

  16. redfred2 10/28/2006 at 4:37 PM #

Chuck has gone through three OC’s. Even though I can’t find anything good to say about him at the moment, there is a problem beyond Trestman. Whatever it is, it is too late to make amends now. Win out, bowl game, whatever, these game day performances are, to use an old and familiar word to Wolfpack fans, pitifully STAGNANT and not showing signs that anyone on the staff has even a clue of what to do next.

It’s the end of optimism, disappointment is the word of the day.

  17. vtpackfan 10/28/2006 at 4:40 PM #

Is our defense going to be any better next year? Tyler, Davis, Lowery (and Pressly) all gone. We have some exciting young DE’s and DB’s from Florida (what a friggin surprise) but is there anything else to do the rebuilding thats supposedly happening.
If Chuck stays on then I’m not sure about cutting our ties with Trestman. We have some budding young stars in the coming years on offense and we won’t know if this OC can recreate any former tactitical magic unless we put in five Div. 1 A offensive lineman.
Please no more brother in law says Cower is ready when we are. I can’t even see Cower sitting in the same room with Oblinger and Fowler and using words like discipline and integrity. Somebodys head would likely explode.

  18. vtpackfan 10/28/2006 at 4:53 PM #

I’m too far away to ever get any pressy’s after games, or even the radio show at Amidio’s. Has any one heard what CTC has to say. I didn’t see any of the game, thank god, but I am warmed by the fact a color commentator worked the word cyborg back in the engish language. It seemed destined to become obsolete, like alum coachs who could’nt find work any where else. Hey thats it. Remember the Holiday Inn commercials years ago that had the grown man living on the sofa at his parents house fighting for priviledges against the grandma. That was a funny one, I hope CTC has some funny moments at the presser and beyond.

If the defense is in for talent depletion, I sure as hell do not want to see any signs of this “offense” around again.

People question why the D fails to stop teams late. Is it because they are playing their asses off and get no lift from the offense the whole game? After watching the offense from the sidelines for a while, anyone would lose hope. I was in my living room, and I did.

  20. rky 10/28/2006 at 5:46 PM #

I agree with tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc . . . no way Testman is on the sidelines next week. If that happens, Chuck is begging to be canned. I think we are getting a little over-optimistic about Cower coming to NCSU. Yes, I do agree that we should at least have that talk with him so he knows that the job is available to him . . . just in case . . . but I cannot believe he will make the drop from the Steelers to the Pack. Am I pessimistic? Nah, just your average die hard Wolfpack fan that is currently very bummed, to say the least. If anyone has any info realting to a reality-based scenario of Cower coming to NCSU, I’d love to hear all about it! Please give me a pick-me-up!

  21. NCSUDude17 10/28/2006 at 5:48 PM #

refred, EXACTLY!! All the people I talked to blamed the D for us losing at the end. That is exactly what I was trying to comunicate to them. Glad to see somebody else has some sense around here, it is in short supply.

  22. packpigskinfan23 10/28/2006 at 6:00 PM #

no way that the D lost that game for us… Not many games are won with only 7 points. I did on a couple of occasions see our defensive players going for strips!!!! what a miracle!!!

  23. Wulfpack 10/28/2006 at 6:30 PM #

If anything it was the Defense that kept us from being blown out by about 28…

  24. ncsslim 10/28/2006 at 7:04 PM #

In the words of the late, great Rodney Dangerfield: “…hey, hey,… they ran that tired old play to draw the other team off sides on a short 4th and inches and they drew themselves off sides….”

How pitiful does it get. I’ve never seen that. Chuck: do the right thing.

  25. TomCat 10/28/2006 at 7:13 PM #

After watching ECU dismantle Virginia (EC ran all over’em. score was 31-14 & gift TD in final secs.) -thought it a NO-BRAINER Brown & Baker would run roughshot over UVA’s defensive front. I’m at a loss… to explain this one. Need a spark (again)- bad.
