OK, so the trip to Louisville wasn’t quite as fun as the trip to Durham.  Meh…..It happens.  Why did it happen this time?

You saw it, what do you think?

Effort, energy missing in NC State’s latest ‘lifeless’ ACC loss (NewsObserver.com)

There’s never a good time to question your team’s effort.

It’s not that N.C. State’s Terry Henderson wanted to, but another embarrassing, lopsided ACC loss, 85-60 at Louisville on Sunday, left the senior guard with no choice.

“It felt like nobody wanted to compete from the start of the game,” Henderson said. “I don’t know why. That’s just how it felt.”

Those are painful words from a team leader, no matter the point in the season, but especially so with N.C. State (14-8, 3-6 ACC) coming into this game after its biggest win of the season at Duke on Monday night.

Not that this is N.C. State’s first “lifeless” loss, as coach Mark Gottfried put it. There were similar efforts in losses to Creighton, Illinois, Miami and North Carolina. Just like those losses, this game was away from home.

None of the confidence, energy or effort from Monday’s road win at Duke carried over for the Wolfpack against a deep, powerful Louisville (18-4, 6-3) team.

The team looked like it was playing in “cement boots,” Gottfried said.

Look, there is no shame in losing on the road at Louisville.  Especially following up the emotional win in Cameron.  But the way we lost?  Heck, we barely even went thru the motions.  Now there IS shame in that.

But nothing to do other than turn the page and try to do better.  Let’s do better.

Time is growing short.  And as VaWolf82 has made all too clear, such that even dummies like me can understand…..there is much ground to be made up.

Sadly, looking at the 2nd half of the season, I see a maximum of 5 wins.  And that’s if we play like we did vs VT/Duke every night out.  We haven’t exactly been doing that of late.

Pack Tracks
– NC State fell to #13/14 Louisville, 85-60, Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center. Abdul-Malik Abu and Maverick Rowan led the Pack’s offensive attack with 13 points each. Freshman Dennis Smith, Jr., added a team-best six assists and three steals.
– With at least 10 games still left in the season, freshman Dennis Smith, Jr., is already in the top-5 in numerous NC State freshman categories. He has 49 steals on the season, second-most by an NC State freshman (Chris Corchiani – 61). He has scored 417 points this season and with 10 points on Wednesday night would move past T.J. Warren and teammate Maverick Rowan into third place in the NC State record for most points scored by a freshman (Brandon Costner – 605).
– In the last three games, junior forward Abdul-Malik Abu is averaging 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 63.9 percent from the field (23-of-36) and has shot at least 60 percent from the field in all three games.
Ted Kapita‘s double-double at Duke made him the sixth NC State player to record a double-double this season. Abdul-Malik Abu (4), Dennis Smith (3), Torin Dorn (2), BeeJay Anya (1) and Omer Yurtseven (1) have also recorded double-doubles this season. The six players with a double-double ties for the most in the ACC with Florida State, UNC-Chapel Hill and Syracuse.

Syracuse’s game at North Carolina State is suddenly important for both teams (Syracuse.com)

Syracuse, N.Y. — One week ago, Syracuse’s game against North Carolina State looked like just another run-of-the-mill game in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Syracuse’s record stood at 11-9 overall and a mediocre 3-4 in the conference. North Carolina State’s record was slightly better at 13-7, but the Wolfpack was off to a 2-5 start in league play.

Then Syracuse won two straight, including an 82-72 upset of 6th-ranked Florida State on Saturday. North Carolina State went into Cameron Indoor Stadium and stunned Duke. The 84-82 win was State’s first at Cameron Indoor in 20 years.

Syracuse and N.C. State had revived their postseason aspirations in a week’s time. And their meeting on Wednesday at N.C. State’s PNC Arena looms as a key game for both teams.

“It’s definitely important, especially for us,” Syracuse freshman Tyus Battle said Monday. “We’re trying to make a push for the tournament right now. We’re rolling right now. We just want to keep things going. We have to get wins.”

Syracuse (13-9, 5-4) and N.C. State (14-8, 3-6) are having to bolster their NCAA tournament resumes now because they failed to do so in the non-conference portion of their schedules.

Syracuse suffered bad non-conference losses to the likes of St. John’s, Connecticut and Georgetown. The Orange lacks a marquee victory outside the ACC.

N.C. State’s resume is similar. The Wolfpack lost to Creighton and Illinois before the start of conference play. However, N.C. State’s best non-conference win came against St. Joseph’s. The Wolfpack’s game against Illinois was the only one against a team from a Power 5 league and that game was part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

In Ken Pomeroy’s statistical analysis of teams on KenPom.com, Syracuse is currently No. 53, while N.C. State is down at No. 78.

Awful….Just awful. No defense played on either side. We are a really bad team with good players.

My little rant against officiating – that sequence with Abu’s travel, the jump ball on Mav, then the foul on Abu turned the tide. Curious that there was no replay on the first two, the Abu foul was a bad call IMO. Still, that was way before the 16 point lead was blown.

I think the team played pretty well tonight. The problem is that in this conference you can play well and still lose. This kind of game is the reason why it is imperative to take care of business against the “lesser” teams. If we beat WF, GT, & BC (or even just 2 of 3) we can easily absorb this kind of loss.

But instead this is basically the nail in the coffin for this season.

Guys this season is over. We will not win 5 ACC games this year. How long must we suffer!!!!

If you’re pulling for State to win games you’re pulling against the program. This Sendekian meltdown increases the chance of G being fired. The worst outcome is that we made the dance this year. The best outcome is dumbster fire.

Still missing the timeout during the loss of the 16 point lead.

    yeah… after a 17-2 run… and that was 30sec TO…

Now… my coaching book says when they score three times in a row in the second half of a close game, you call the full TO… everytime… NO THINKING ALLOWED!

There are at least a half a dozen paid suits on the bench during the game…. and at least one of them should have yelling in the Coach’s ear…

    “Need a Timeout, Coach”

    This I don’t F’ing understand….

    SMH

Of course, we’ll never get a decent explanation, so WTF…

Kids played their ass#s off tonight and deserved better…

We lost by 51 to the Holes just in case that slipped anyone’s mind. The same team that struggled against Pitt last night. Lost big to the better teams and lost decent to weak teams. Squeezed by no name teams earlier in the season. Everyone head to Char Grill to chill with Anya after the game.

I think some of Gott’s rotations and game strategy reminds me of something….Mmmm what is it? Oh, grab a handful of poo and throw it at the wall to see if it sticks. It’s still $hit not matter what it does.

The NCAAT is essentially out of reach with the Holes (“I’d rather not eat than lose to State”), ND (Jeebus, with their shooters and our D??), and FSU (we will wilt from the physicality) still on the slate.

That doesn’t even account for Wahoowa, who I always think we can beat, then beats us by about 50.

Game, set, match. The NIT would be a minor miracle, really.

One free throw. Plain and simple. 10 for 18 in regulation. Not that it would make all of the other issues disappear, but this would be a W instead of an L.

I apologize for not wading through all the posts. I shut down my phone at the half. Here are some thoughts after riding home and also listening to the Post Mortem (which WordPress canNOT spell).

Coach Gottfried did NOT mention anything about the LAST Cuse possession during regular play. Why, in the name of Jimmy V., did we NOT foul and let Cuse hit 2 and then be up by ONE and have to be fouled…? Maybe YOU GUYS discussed that and understand it….but I and about 10K other folks could NOT resolve it.

Coach Gottfried had all the stats on their STAR John Gillon. He quoted that he had hit 12 3PT’er in the 9 ACC Games. He got 9 TONGIHT….I thought it was 10, but it does NOT matter. Why did we NOT contest his shots? YES, sometimes a player will step up. It seems like we specialize in making Mediocre Players have a night that will go down in INFAMY and give them and their school something to talk about for generations to come.

The Officiating did take a dramatic turn about mid H2. The Tweetie Birds came out of hibernation. And Mr. Gillon stepped up. NOT saying it was the REF’s fault, but they certainly seemed to be an influence.

Kapita was a NON-Existent Force…but he only got a few minutes. We actually rolled the ball DOWN to let Anya lumber on down and get on Defense….SOMETHING ain’t RIGHT….

Coach Gottfried expressed NO major remorse….it was one of those….you CANNOT win them all….in that when a team gets hot and there were some “questionable calls”, you will LOSE. Excuse me….but when you do NOT have a defensive strategy, you USUALLY DO LOSE….THEM ALL>>>>!!!!!

StateRed44….IF I thought it would go that way, then we SHOULD push for a court Martial. In the end, those of us that mutinied will be given the Code Red.

They flashed up a scene from Top Gun where Tom Cruise (Maverick) was cocky. We need a Cocky (Fill In the Blank) to play Tom Cruise’s role of Lt. Daniel Kaffee…..

Good piece of writing, 44….Totally Agree. I have been on the receiving end of some of her emails and she plays the part of Col. Nathan Jessup quite convincingly….

OH WELL….I had already decided NOT to go to any Post Season games anyway…

TO close…..there was a discussion….NOT instigated or started by me, BEFORE the game from some of the LTR’s in the Champions Club about Bobby Lutz and how we seem to be floundering WITHOUT his Defensive Prowess….can recruit players with the same finesse and “SCORE” with them like certain members of the coaching staff can with “skirts”….

The SUITS comment is one that many, from the second level have observed. We DO have more folks in blazers or suit jackets than we do PLAYERS….

I had a previous engagement and I missed the game. I looked at my phone to see we were up 6 and Mav was going off! Then I glanced at it driving home to see OT and a loss. Oh geez, absolutely needed this one, that’s tough.

I kinda like the analogous ambiguity of “Code RED”…

To say the least…. Game/Bench coaching is NOT our strength…

If we are at the ” Code RED ” level, what happens when we go to ” Code WHITE “…

Would have loved to have seen Boeheim in our huddle talking Zone Defense…

TK missed the signals changing Defense from MTM to Zone a couple of times and was totally lost last game…
    that’s enough to get you a seat…

But it also raises the ever present question…
After 4-6 months of daily practice… How do you still miss those signals?
