Your “Bounceback Road Win…Hopefully” BC Game Thread

Wow.  That was ugly, huh?

Escalated

I mean, I expected us to look overmatched in Chapel Hill.  But just….WOW.

The Pack (12-4, 1-2 ACC) kinda took it on the chin this past weekend.  Of course, with the game delay due to the winter storm, one of the themes during the game was “NC State wanted to play this game last night”.

Lemme tell ya something….  Ain’t no winter storm ever caused a beatdown like that.  Did the game becoming delayed from Saturday night until Sunday afternoon cause some issues?  Some changed routines?  Of course it did.

Did it feed us a 51 point defeat….?

No.  Sorry.

But at the same time, we are not as bad as we looked in Chapel Hill.  I hope.  At least I don’t think we are.

The good news?  Even a 51 pt drubbing at the hands of our not rivals was not only not terribly damaging to our overall resume thus far…but our RPI is up this week.

Now….it’s time to bounce back, learn from the beating, and get some W’s.

I hope.

With BC, GT, Pitt and Wake in the chamber the next two weeks (the latter 3 at home, btw), the time is now.  Just saying.

Boston College

The Eagles (8-8, 1-2 ACC) are not good.  Beating them will not necessarily improve our RPI…but losing to them will damage it fairly significantly, even on the road.  We should be able to take this one.  I mean they’ve lost to Harvard, they’ve lost to Richmond.  They’ve lost to both Fairfield and Hartford.  THEY’VE LOST TO FREAKING NICHOLL’S STATE!!!!!

That being said, they did manage to buck up and take down ‘Cuse at home.  So one never knows.

But it’s an opportunity for a conference road win, RPI be damned.  I hope we don’t have too big a hangover from Sunday’s beatdown.

DSJ = FOTW

College basketball freshman rankings: NC State’s Dennis Smith Jr. starting to rise (CBSSports.com)

Freshman of the Week: Dennis Smith Jr., NC State

This was one of the toughest weeks so far this season to decide on FOTW. Smith wins it narrowly over the likes of Creighton’s Justin Patton, Minnesota’s Amir Coffey, Kansas’ Josh Jackson, Kentucky’s De’Aaron Fox and UCLA’s Lonzo Ball. A really nice week for the first-year players in this sport.

Yes, Smith and his NC State teammates got absolutely steamrolled by North Carolina on Sunday, losing by 51 and sending a blast of panic through State fans hot enough to melt the snow that blanketed the Triangle. But from an individual standpoint, Smith had a big week. NC State’s had just two triple-doubles in its history, the second coming last week when Smith put up one of the best single-game stat lines we’ve see this season: 27 points, 11 boards, 11 assists and five steals on 56-percent shooting in State’s 104-78 win over Virginia Tech.

And he’s up to #5 overall

5. Dennis Smith Jr., NC State

Last week: No. 6

19.1 PPG, 6.4 APG, 4.2 RPG, 2.2 steals, 50.0 2-pt%, 38.4 3-pt%, 112.1 ORtg

We covered Smith’s season and most recent week above. So what’s next? At Boston College on Wednesday, then home vs. Georgia Tech on Sunday. Smith will have two opportunities to go ham, as both those teams lack the athletes in the backcourt to handle him. But what I’d like to see more of: consistent effort on defense. Smith has the ability to be a top-level defender, but he’s not shown that throughout this season. He’s not bad, or even a liability, but if Smith puts it all together and really commits without the ball, then he enters into the conversation for No. 1 overall pick.

I don’t think I can bring myself to watch the next game. It’s just ugly basketball. How did Lo run the offense so well? Was that team just superior in every way? Hell what about 2013, when we had Lacey and Cat?

    Gott to go!
Maybe Sunday we can score 100 at home again. And hope GT doesn’t score 110.

What a battle with the powerhouse known as BC! Just too much talent on that BC team for us to squeak one out. Don’t worry guys a 51 point loss followed by an 8 point loss to a very bad BC team is a learning experience! I know I learned a few things myself. The dumpster fire is burning strong and Gott is making his relocation process much easier as time goes by.

Awful game and performance against a bad BC team. I say that but then again they were 8 points better of a team than we are.

I want one of you sunshine squad members to explain this one away. Give us some more reasons we shouldn’t throw the towel in on Gott.

I watched Hoosiers tonight. And read a good book. And worked on making a baby. Try it.

Once again we have talent. Once again Gott can’t elevate the team. At this point anyone that thinks Gott is our answer is either a hopeless optimist or a masochist. Reality has to set in at some point, We are as non relevant to big time basketball as we were 6, 8, 10, or more years ago.

No words. What I see is not a team but 5 individuals on the court, trying to get their piece of the pie. We will be better off when DSJ is in the NBA. You can see the resentment towards him from the other guys. Supposedly, there was 20 scouts in attendance so of course DSJ, Yurt and Anya were going to play street ball and try to get noticed. Tonight was a damn shame.

Turnovers killed us. Everyone standing around, not moving to the ball during passes. Just suck on the road. Wonder if that will change?

Some folks say “we have talent”…

    but… I don’t know…
I guess it depends on how you define “talent”….

    This is not really complicated…

    “You” say BEFORE the game…
    1. we GOTT to stop their two guards…
    2. we GOTT to dominate inside…

    “You” say AFTER the game…
    1. we did NOT stop their two guards…
    2. we did NOT to dominate inside…
    3. we made 17 turnovers…

and Markel gets the ONLY game ball with 27 minutes at point guard tonight…

and, just as important, nothing from the Brain Trust on our bench effected a positive outcome…

Where’s the REAL talent in that?
    Ya’ll know who “YOU” is.

One could make that statement about the football team, replacing “Carolina” with “Clemson”. And it wouldn’t be any less accurate. Although the Clemson game wasn’t really a whupping.

We should have run this team off the floor. You wouldn’t think you’d need to say it, but you can’t just expect to show up and, although you are vastly better on paper, expect to win.

There is just so much going on within this program that the typical Newton like me isn’t privy to and doesn’t understand. Honestly don’t get it.

    the kids ain’t listening…

    or can’t hear…
    or won’t listen…
    or something…

    that’s right…

There’s no point in “fixing” anything else, until you “fix” THIS…

Now we GOTT 3 days… to “fix” something before the Tech game Sunday afternoon…

Go ahead and call THIS like you see now…

“If this Wolfpack TEAM loses these three in a row… THIS season is over….”

    Winners walk… Losers talk…

how many dunks and layups and wide open threes did we give up?

How bad were the lineup combinations, substitution patterns?

2 questions. What the hell is wrong with Dorn? Why doesn’t Gott give Yurt the stupid ball at the high post instead of the low post? Euro big don’t want to back in with contact.

Botb–> too damn many to count…

How bad were the lineup combinations, substitution patterns?

Botb–> January 11th — NINE weeks into the season, not counting October practices –and we’re still looking, testing, guessing and hoping for the right combination to make a magical appearance…with very little chance that there will be a better answer next week…

We should be running and pressing and trapping with this roster, and we,re plodding along with bad sub patterns and lineups. Ive long expected atrocious defense from his teams, but its inexcusable that he refuses to mask his deficiencies with a style of play that leads to more possessions, greater opportunities for easy baskets, and eliminates the need to play half court defense for 30 seconds

Hell, half the time when I do watch I wonder if the kids are gassed. The whole damn team was bending over with hands on knees every dead ball I saw against UNC. And that was first half
