2016 ACC Baseball Championship

Wolfpack Baseball, as well as most of the rest of the ACC…not to mention 3/4’s of the Big four…will be in Durham this week for the 2016 ACC Baseball Championship.
1/4 of the Big Four will be at home 8 miles away. See I KNOW it’s 8 miles because Dick Vitale tells me so, incessantly, at least twice every year.

But I digress…

Congrats to Wake and Duke for sliding in under the wire.  And to BC as well.  Well done, Eagles.

And Heels…..Memorial Day weekend is always a big time at the beach. So maybe consider a last minute get away. I mean it’s not like you’ll be going to class or studying, so what I’m saying is….treat yourselves and enjoy the time off.

A Quick Recap of How it Works…

Tuesday’s games are single elimination. Loser goes home, winner enters pool play in their respective pool.

Wednesday thru Saturday is pool play. Every team plays the other teams in their pool once. If you go 3-0 you are assured of a berth into Sunday’s championship game. If you go 2-1 and tied with only one other team, whoever won the head to head game moves on. If you’re tied with two other teams at 2-1, the highest seeded team moves on…regardless of the head to head results.

For this reason, it is in our best interests to take care of business early and take both FSU and Miami down early. One of them will beat the other, preventing a 3 way tie with two higher seeded teams…Pack moves on.

Of course that is theoretical at best. Because if we lose to the lower seeded team and are tied with only them, they’d move on.

So just beat everybody and remove all doubt…is what I’m saying.

Sunday’s Championship Game is of course a single winner takes all. Not a best 2 out of 3 like in Omaha.

A (Very Brief) Hosting/National Seed Mention

We’ll probably host an NCAAT regional at home as long as we don’t go 0-fer in our pool in the ACCT.

We will not be a national seed unless we get to Sunday. And probably not even unless we take the whole enchilada. And maybe not even then. But we will be playing at least two teams with top level RPI (Miami and FSU) and potentially a 3rd if we make it to Sunday. Which will certainly help our resume. But right now the biggest thing we need to do is win some games.

FWIW, Pack’s RPI currently is #7. Unfortunately, poll voters were less enthused by our series win over Carolina than we all were.

Some Highlights from Last Weekend

And something that has nothing to do with anything, but it was recently shared with me and I found it darkly hilarious….

Go Pack!!!!!

I think about that CD. I do. There was Glad, Billy Russell, and some guy from Fredonia..Yes, I knew you were a catcher..We talked about it..Good Lord, we were just chiren…..

Watched the last 2 innings of today’s game with my brother. After the failure to cover third base in the bottom of the 8th with runners on 2nd and 1st was bad enough, but then the throw from the outfield to 3rd base instead of to 2nd to hold the runner at first was classic lack of fundamentals. My brother asked me if this team had a coach. I told him “barely”.

With runners on 2nd and first, how is the 3rd baseman going to get someone out when he leaves his bag and the pitcher has nowhere to throw to? The first baseman made a good play to keep the pitcher’s throw there from going past the bag. One thing we always preached to the outfielders in softball was to bring the ball to 2nd base on a base hit with runners on base; you’re not going to throw out the guy going to third. Had that throw gone to 2nd instead of toward 3rd, the next base hit wouldn’t have scored 2 runs and for all practical purposes ended the game.

I also don’t like this format. Looks more like soccer than baseball. The 3rd game is often meaningless, which to me should never happen in a tournament. I wish they’d go back to the old format of double elimination. If not, do what Adam Gold suggested and have 3 4-team pods, with the 3 winners advancing and the other semifinal slot filled by the team outside the top 3 that has the best record in pool play.

    Pool play sucks.

Pool play sucks, and so does the $$$$$ that pretty much wiped out conference championships as anything meaningful..That’s why I jest at peeps that keep expounding “TITLE.”

That’s coming from one that has 4 ACC rings. Don’t mean nuthin’ no mo’.

Hey, Wolfanatic? Did you know that when I showed up at State, it was as a High School All-American catcher?

Hell man, I didn’t even know that.
    The hell you say???

^ I gotta big mouth Wuf, but I ain’t told all yet. Besides, the only reason that State was the chosen place was because I was an All-State …Split End. Split End. 😉

    Well that I did know.

Won’t it be fun if FSU beats GT in today’s mid game? Then the Pack will have two more games, both totally meaningless (to us, at least).
See, this is why I hate pool play.

Pool play? Pool play? What are we, the World Cup or something?

FSU stretches its lead over GT to 6-1 in the 7th.
Well, this “tournament” was fun while it lasted.

Even still….please kick South Beach’s collective arse tonight.

Yes. So jazzed to be here. Thank God for Tobacco Road.

You made it huh? Good for you.
I’ll be out tomorrow night. Couldn’t make it work for yesterday or today.
You in the park yet, or in our favorite LF waterin’ hole? I’m living vicariously thru you at the moment. Really want to be out there.

    Final, FSU 6-1 over GT.

    LF, Wuf.

That’s my man. Glad to hear it.

Pack trudging in the mud tonight it seems.
Weird pitching set up due to the Williamson injury, and other issues. Can’t throw strikes. Bats look not just asleep but positively comatose.
Yet ‘Canes have only been able to put 2 on the board. Pack still way in it.

This game, while having no effect for us in this tourney, would be a huge resume win nonetheless. Pack still ain’t a shoo in to host a regional. Just saying.

LMFAO….Miami CF apparently has a seizure, gives Palmeiro a lead off double (rather than a single), bottom 4. Dunand single makes it 1st and 3rd, nobody away….

    My god that was pertty.
Deatherage 2nd drag single of the night…gets an RBI on this one.

That was a beautiful baseball play. I’m verklempt.

Now Knizner bunts safely to load ’em up.
Small ball is kinda fun when it works.

    Sacks loaded, nobody out.

RBI single for Kinneman. Knots it at two.
    Still loaded, still nobody away.

Chance Shepard 2RBI double…Pack up 4-2, still nobody out.

Pack bats around in the 4th, puts 5 on the board.
Now lead Miami 5-2 going to the 5th.

Yep, this is gonna be one of THOSE kinds of games.
Whoever manages to not f-ck up last will win.

Glorified exhibition. I has no f-cks left to give.

Glorified exhibition. I has no f-cks left to give.

In the short term yes. But if we want to host, a win here would pretty much cement it.

2 run bomb from Shepard puts the Pack up 7-5 going to the 9th.

    Chance Shepard is da man…

Yep. This is all about the rpi and playing to win every time you suit up.

Glad to see we are fighting. And what a shot!
