Cat Barber to explore NBA Options

…let’s just hope that he gets better advice than Lorenzo Brown, Trevor Lacey and Calvin Leslie.

The NCAA gave college basketball underclassmen more time this year to evaluate their NBA draft stock.

N.C. State junior Cat Barber will use the extra time to make a decision about where he will play next season. Barber said Monday he plans on going through the evaluation process with the NBA after the college season ends.

“I’m going to talk with my family and my coaches and just go through the process and see what happens,” Barber said after the Wolfpack’s practice at the Verizon Center on Monday.

N.C. State (15-16) faces Wake Forest (11-19) in the opening round of the ACC tournament on Tuesday. It could wind up being Barber’s last game for the Wolfpack.

An All-ACC selection as a junior, the 6-2 point guard led the conference in scoring (23.4 points per game) and minutes (38.7 per game).

The NCAA extended the deadline to withdraw from the draft past the NBA combine. Underclassmen will have until May 25 to make a decision. In previous years, college players were unable to go through the combine and get extended feedback about their draft standing.

[snip]

Both NBAdraft.net and Draft Express, websites devoted to the draft, have Barber projected as a second-round pick. Only the 30 first-round picks are guaranteed money and a roster spot.

N.C. State has had mixed success with players leaving early under coach Mark Gottfried. Lorenzo Brown and C.J. Leslie left after their junior season in 2013. Brown was taken in the second round, and has bounced around the NBA and NBA Developmental League. Leslie went undrafted.

Trevor Lacey left after his junior season in 2015 and was undrafted. T.J. Warren left after his sophomore season in 2014 and was a lottery pick. He is averaging 11 points per game this season for the Phoenix Suns.

Barber said he was a long way from making a final decision about his future.

“I’m not trying to rush anything,” Barber said. “I want to see how it goes.”

He aint coming back. No way, no how. Thanks for a great run kid, you played your heart out. I dont know jack squat about the NBA but I have to believe that someone is going to gamble on you in the middle of the 1rst.

He’ll likely need a passport to play professionally, but I sure wouldn’t blame him for not returning next season to this ongoing shi*storm called Wolfpack basketball.

Tomorrow will likely be Barber’s last game for NC State. I think Wake Forest has better personnel than the Pack, but the Deacons to me have gotten less out of this team than anyone in the league. Barber may not be named the ACC POY this season, but no one has done more for his team this season than Cat. No one.

God knows this State fan is dreading next season.

I would love to see cat return. He has played hard and has represented state well the last 3 years. You are lucky to get 3 years from a MCD all American.

I’m glad the NBA extended their deadline. Cat will be able to attend the combine, and hopefully get good advice from the NBA scouts. He will also need to ignore what any potential agents tell him. I think he goes though. Small ball is a hot trend in the NBA these days, and PGs like Cat are highly coveted. He also has family responsibilities that are likely weighing heavily on him. I’m guessing late 1st round, 25ish.

Whiteshoes, it just isn’t everday that one gets to see the maturation of a player being laid out in front of you.

    Year 1 — Anthony 1 on 3, 4 or 5… including the unforgettable 1-13 – sittingonthebenchinthefourthquarter game in Dean Dome…
Anthony works his buttoff in the off season…

Year 2 — Anthony plays point guard for the first time — the results are known as Cat2.0 …
Anthony works his buttoff in the off season…

Year 3 — Anthony First Team All ACC as one of the top scorers in the league, ironmanminutesallseason at point guard…
Anthony works his buttoff in the off season mostly on his three point shot and gains 10lbs upperbodystrength ….

Year 4 — With a much improved supporting cast of teammates and 5 fewer minutes played per game…
Anthony is the ACC player of the year in 2017…

The difference between Year 3 and Year 4….
low first round – high second round v. fifth round at best, if not Europe…
    easily $1,000,000 cash money.

There’s nothing wrong with a little window shopping…. as long as you keep your senses…

The guy is a class act, where he obviously put forth 100% every time I watched him play. A nice ambassador for our school. It was a tough year with so many new starts, and his patience and composure made a difference. A good teammate. I wish him the best at whatever he decides, but I hope he returns for a Senior year!

Cat was the only reason I kept going to the games, and he was the only reason I stayed to the end of each game. Like everyone else, I sure hope he comes back, but I can understand why he would go.

Cat may not be looked at as a point guard, but as a 2. Coming back would give him the chance to play the 2 with DSjr. at the point. I believe NBA scouts will let him know this. Another year will be invaluable to him and any NBA team looking. We all think he can play with the best of them, but we thought the same about Trevor and Lo too. (Leslie not so much). If he gets good advice and he listens he’s coming back and we have a competitive team again…..

Completely disagree. There are at least 91 PGs on NBA rosters this season, not including combo guards. There is no doubt in my mind Cat is one of the top 90 PGs right now for the NBA game.

Cat may not be looked at as a point guard, but as a 2

Seriously doubt that. He is listed at 6’2″, 185 lbs. The average NBA PG is 6’2″, 190+ lbs. The average NBA SG is 6’5″, 205+ lbs. Cat would be pretty seriously undersized for a NBA SG. And Cat doesn’t have a great vertical to help make up for his height.

In addition, while he has dramatically improved his jump shot over the past couple of years, his range is also probably subpar for a NBA SG.

    PG all the way.

    I think he comes back

It would be surprising. I suppose if the feedback he gets is that he would only be a second rounder, he might consider it. But (a) it is hard to improve significantly from year 3 to year 4 when already playing at 1st team All ACC level, and (b) next year’s draft is supposed to be considerably stronger than this year’s draft. So it seems unlikely Cat could improve his draft stock by coming back. Meanwhile, he would forego a year of earning for his family.

I would love to see him come back, since he is a great player and a pleasure to watch. But it would also potentially create some playing time issues. It would really take away from Henderson’s minutes, which would be really unfortunate for him after what he has been through; it would also reduce minutes for Dorn, DSJ, Mav, and the twins. Dorn, Henderson, and DSJ aren’t going anywhere, but could it create risk of another transfer (e.g., Mav?).

Marcus Paige is a great example of the potential downside of returning for another year. Paige’s track record:

    Freshman – Freshman All-American
Sophomore – 2nd team All-American, 1st team All ACC, ACC Most Improved Player
Junior – 2nd team All ACC
Senior – Preseason ACC POY, no actual honors

Cat is definitely too small to be an NBA shooting guard. That’s why you get so many undersized SGs coming into college wanting to play the point, such as Rodney Purvis.

Dennis has said he can play with another point guard as long as the guy is a dynamic player, and Cat certainly is that. But I just don’t see Cat returning.

Would be shocked if Cat returns. Thinking its more providing for his family than team issues that will factor more. If history tells him anything, he should listen to people in the know who truly have his best interest in mind instead of greedy agents. I tried to see what kind of money potentially Cat could garnish if he ended up as Lacey in Europe, could not find it. Used Lacey as my reference, anyone know what kind of money he is making in Italy?

One interested thing I did find is that Lacey list on his Italy team profile as an former Alabama player. No mention of NC State.

Cat has a young child that he needs to provide for, and another year won’t make him any taller. Gone, daddy gone.

Cat is gone as fast as a cheetah and I would not blame him. He has a family to look after and he needs to get while the getting is good.

It would be great to see him return but I don’t see what he could do next year to increase his draft status.
It would be almost impossible to improve his stats. He could win more and maybe get ACC player of the year but that means nothing for going pro. With DSJ here he would be relegated to SG and he will not play SG in the pros. Honestly I just don’t see an upside (from a professional standpoint to coming back.

Whiteshoes, it just isn’t everday that one gets to see the maturation of a player being laid out in front of you.

This is why I like Cat so much. He was over matched as a freshman. He worked hard and found his legs the middle of his sophomore year. This year he added even more to his game and performed at a very high level.

The three players who have made First Team All-ACC under Gott have all been development projects. All were really good prospects/highly ranked recruits, but they all had to work hard and take some coaching to reach their potential.

I will be surprised if Cat comes back, but I will also be very happy.

I’d be pretty shocked if he returned, but he’s probably not going to be a 1st round pick. I think he’s good enough to stick on an NBA roster, but it’s not going to be an easy road. I’m not going to say he’d be wrong to leave, cause that’s a choice he has to make for him and his family, but there are definitely things he could do with one more year to dramatically improve his NBA stock.

    1) Get stronger – This is the big one, and it’s been the same since he arrived at State. He’s never going to be a big dude, but if Cat wants an NBA career he has to get stronger. It affects his ability to finish around the rim on offense, and his ability to fight through picks on defense. His height/reach are perfectly fine for an NBA point guard, but he’s not an explosive leaper and he has a slight frame, and that worries NBA scouts. He’s gotten much better as a finisher this last year, but he often makes shot harder than they have to be because he’s going around contact and not through it.
    2) Improve his jumper – He’s made such huge strides with this so far. If he continued to improve at the same pace into next year, he’d be a totally different prospect. A speedy point guard with 20 foot range is containable. A speedy point guard with 22 foot range is a real problem. With more weapons around him next year, he’d also get more of a chance to show he can be a catch-and-shoot threat, as opposed to having to create most of his shots.
    3) Show more defensive impact. I think Cat is a plus defender, but he didn’t get much chance to show it last year because he was asked to do so much offensively. On a roster with more weapons, he can afford to devote more energy to showing he can be a lockdown defender.

If I’m an NBA scout, those are the things I want to see from Cat Barber. If he adds 10-15 pounds of muscle and becomes a more consistent shooter, that’s the kind of guy who will contribute on an NBA roster.
