RALEIGH, N.C. – Dantonio Burnette, one of the most beloved players in Wolfpack football history, has assumed leadership of NC State football’s strength & conditioning program. Burnette has been a member of the Wolfpack football strength staff for 12 years.
Following his playing career at NC State, Burnette spent three seasons as a graduate assistant for Wolfpack football’s strength and conditioning program, followed by five years as a full-time assistant. He left to spend the 2012 season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Pittsburgh before returning to Raleigh in January of 2013 as a member of Dave Doeren’s strength and conditioning staff.
Known as “Thunder Dan” during his playing career, Burnette was a four-time letter winner at linebacker from 1999-2002. He was named first-team All-ACC, the team’s co-MVP and a team captain as a senior in 2002, the winningest season in school history. He was a key to the Pack’s win over Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, 2003, as he knocked out the Fighting Irish’s starting quarterback in the first quarter.
His 24 tackles against Clemson in 2001 ties as the second most in a game in school history and he ranks second in career tackles with 476. His 41 career tackles for loss ties for fourth in school history.
Burnette was a standout in the weight room as well, earning the team’s most valuable lifter award in 2001.
Originally from Warner Robins, Ga., Burnette graduated in 2004 with a degree in sports management and earned his master’s in higher education and sports management in 2007. He is a certified member of the NSCA and USA Weightlifting. He and his wife Edrina have three children: Alexis (16), Austin (2) and Aiden (born in July of 2015).
Burnette replaces Jason Veltkamp in his new role.
