Pack/Holes 2013 Game Thread

The time is near, and my insides are already bubbling with rage. Obviously, I will be in no shape to LiveBlog, but will be glad to see everyone in the comments.

Dear God, don’t let us lose this one. Would be extra nice for it to be a blowout. Please.

The fake punt was out of concern that the defense was not ready to get back in and UNC was about to roll in for another score. It wasn’t just a random fake punt. I would not have called it.

Enough with the our state crap. It is not even our neighborhood!

Alias Troll, I don’t spin. You are really, really overdoing it.

phillypacker – I’m curious as to what have you seen outside of better recruiting that has you annointing DD as the next Dick Sheridan? Are you watching the same team play as I am?

Here you are bashing Amato for only being good because of recruiting yet you say to wait for the recruits to get here and somehow the current situational “unawareness” coaching will disappear?

DD’s first season just went around the bowl and down the hole.

to quote a 40-year-old song lyric:

“And where do we go from here?
Which is the way that’s clear?”

Well said Bureau! Our staff right now looks like a bunch of ass clowns!

Playing Mitchell AND Thomas should’ve been part of the game plan going in, and it should’ve been advertised all week.

With a game plan that didn’t initially include Thomas, given the play of Mitchell, he still should’ve been put in earlier.

    That fake punt? WTF? Really?

Other than those 3, a quick assessment has no real problems with today’s coaching. Roster still limits options. But those 3 are not minor items.

Another recruiting class and next season should give us a pretty good idea of what we have with this staff, regardless of the W/L. Inspite of today’s gaffs, I’m still encouraged.

Just for fun, I wonder what RW would’ve done in this offense.

I hope we have a surprisingly good basketball season or this is gonna be a rough fall and winter!

  10. tjfoose1 11/02/2013 at 7:29 PM #

We still got Rodon, Turner, Austin, et al for one more season.

  11. packplantpath 11/02/2013 at 7:32 PM #

The worst part about the fake punt is that, even if it worked, it would have still been dumb.

Honestly, that move made tob’s infamous punt at Clemson look brilliant by comparison.

Considering the personnel and absent one gadget play I think they comported themselves OK.

Losing to the Tar Holes is like losing your gonads.

  13. ShipHappens 11/02/2013 at 7:37 PM #

I don’t see how the fake punt will be discussed in any other light than a game-changing misstep by the coaching staff. It was ill-conceived and poorly executed. Field position not good, perhaps first down distance was its only positive.

was unfortunately at the game – again – and it’s official – Doeren is a terrible coach – we need to cut our losses

Granny panties Yow, Doeurine and Gottfired….not our state. Our state of idiocy.

Some of you guys need to calm down. DD had a solid game plan going forward and I think the guys fulfilled the expectation and would have won the game today minus a couple of bonehead interceptions where Mitchell should have just taken the sack. I like the fake punt call. Doeren obviously understood that this was our Super Bowl for the season and was doing all he could to manage a victory. I swear, some of you guys expect chicken salad out of chicken sh!t.

    Edit

  18. RedandWhite97 11/02/2013 at 10:58 PM #

Was out of town at a family gathering and wasn’t able to keep up with the game (didn’t know the final score until 5:30).

I have read a lot of the comments/complaints about the in game coaching. What I’m curious to know is, are some of these high risk coaching decisions being driven by the lack of talent we have this year? I’m just not sure judgements can be made on this staff’s in game decisions until we have more support and better players.

I’m not sure about the coaching of fundamentals either. I saw poor fundamentals the last couple of years, so i assume it will take DD a couple of years to work through this also. It may be marginal, but some of the fundamentals seem to be improved this year.

If the previous staff were here this year, I feel every game would be UVa 2012.

Edit- BTW, looks like the other guys that were discussed for our job haven’t faired any better (Purdue, Cal, Colorado). I hate it, but it’s just going to take time.

The fake punt may have been the worst play call I’ve ever seen by a NCSU coaching staff. No excuses, please. 4th and 12 inside your own 30? Try as you like, your half full glass has a crack in it.

I see thedumbsh!ts are back to share their wisdom.

My bad Foose. Let me join in with the crowd. The coaches suck. The players suck. The logo at midfield sucks. The fake punt sucked. We suck. Mitchell sucks. Thomas sucks. OLine sucks. My hangover sucks. Blah bl blah bl phucking blah. We knew we would be horrible this year right? I sure as hell did, but what I won’t do is sit here and cry because we got beat. I FEEL, that the coaches had a solid plan going into the game, and some bad sh!t happened (picks) that derailed the plan. My bad for sharing my views since evidently their not parallel with yours.

    A few points:

    1) The fake punt didn’t cost us the game. If you want to blame DD for kicking FGs, fine. If I was playing varsity football with a JV lineup, I would try some pretty ridiculous shizzle to confuse my opponent (showing strength where there is none). We start the most freshmen of anyone in the conference; we’re not better talent-wise than those blue-helmeted clowns.

    2) This particular game shows you how much an effective (not even a great one) QB makes a terrible team look good, and a great team look better. There’s a reason Brandon Mitchell is playing QB; he’s an improvement over the other four slugs we had at that position. Good football coaches don’t win consistently unless they have solid QBs. Sumlin, Cutcliffe, even TOB only win because QB play masks deficiencies at every other position.

    3) Speaking of coaches, do you think Cutcliffe is a good coach? He’s in year six at Duke, year 12 overall. Doeren is in year 3, 8 games into season 1 here. If in year three we see no improvement, then fire him. It’s stupid to think he should be fired now.

    4) Losing this game has ONE positive outcome, and that is that Larry Fedora will still be coaching at Asterisk University next year. Larry Fedora is just another John Bunting/Carl Torbush. His winning streak ends at two.

  23. SaccoV 11/03/2013 at 1:35 AM #

    A couple of points:

    1) I hate that we lost but am so glad that Larry Fedora will stay in Chapel Hill for at least one more season. I look forward to beating his ass next year with an ACTUAL football team.

    2) Piss and moan about the coaching staff all you would like. If I tried to play varsity football with a JV team, I would try some pretty crazy shit to convince my opponent of strength where there is none. I distinctly remember State vs. BC at home when TOB refused to adapt his strategy with no defensive players of any skill. If TOB would have just allowed his defense to give up a TD, and given RW the ball back, we could have won that game (2008). In this case, Doeren threw caution to the wind KNOWING that he was outmanned by a terrible Asterisk bunch, and he lost. If you want to blame DD for kicking FGs, fine. But the fake punt happened in the 2nd quarter; it was NOT the game deciding play.

    3) This game, like many of ours this season, is a microcosm of how much an effective QB makes terrible teams look good, and makes good teams look great. Mitchell is only playing QB because he was better than four other terrible QBs we had, and right now it is obvious why he was a WR to begin with. TOB’s entire coaching record is hinged upon having Matt Ryan, Mike Glennon and Russell Wilson as his starting QBs. Kevin Sumlin is 52-21 as a coach having Case Keenum and Johnny Manziel to accrue most of those wins. If Brissett is even close to as good as advertised, we will be a vastly improved football team.

    4) Does David Cutcliffe look like a good football coach right now? He’s in year six at Duke. Eight games into season 1 isn’t nearly enough time to judge Doeren. If in year three the team still looks like this, then by all means, light it on fire and start over.

    MISTA WOLF,

And you think my comments were directed towards you because?

To be clear, I was referencing the thoughts like

” Doeren is a terrible coach – we
    need to cut our losses”

  25. tjfoose1 11/03/2013 at 7:31 AM #

“It’s stupid to think he should be fired now.”

Yep, but some have never had a shortage of stupid.
