It’s Time To Retire “This Is Our State” — It’s Become An Embarrassing Joke

After last night’s 82-72 overtime loss to NC Central, on the way home, I saw a rather forlorn yard sign wavering in the cool November breeze: “This Is Our State!”

As I drove past, still stinging from the worst major sports loss for the Wolfpack in at least the past ten years, a slight gust pushed the sign over.  Witnessing that was a fitting end to a miserable night in NC State sports.

Considering that NC State has lost to every in-state rival since September save for Appalachian, the Wolfpack has hardly shown the sort of dominance that would make such a brag the least bit appropriate.

And there’s undoubtedly more losses on the way: this weekend, NC State will host a “home” game against East Carolina in Carter-Finley that’s sure to be a bowl-like 50/50 atmosphere, at best.  More than likely, it’s going to be full of Pirates, cheering on their team as it tramples the hapless Wolfpack, and in between deriding NC State for “stealing its logo” and “stealing the ECU first down chant.”  Sounds like a lovely way to spend the afternoon, especially when on top of that, fans at the game will have to hear about the “This is our State” slogan besides.

Hopefully, ECU’s horde of happy Pirates won’t tear down the goalposts inside Carter-Finley, as is their custom.  Hopefully.

And it may get even worse: with Duke getting all it could handle from the Pirates basketball team, and based upon the performance that the NC State cagers put up against NC Central last night, when the Pirates come back next month, they’ll probably go back to Green Vegas with a win in hoops too.

In fact, State’s performances have been so inept in football and now basketball, the slogan has become a cruel joke that Wolfpackers everywhere have to hear when they go to work on yet another morning after yet another defeat.  Wolfpackers are a thick skinned lot even in the best of times; it comes with living in the same neighborhood as Duke and UNC — universities that win conference and national championships in basketball on a regular basis.  And soon, Duke may well become the second team from North Carolina to play for an ACC Title in football’s modern era of having a championship game.  NC State, on the other hand, has never played in a BCS Bowl or for that matter one of the five big postseason games in its entire football history.

This is our state, indeed.

All that in mind, it’s time to quietly retire the slogan and put it on the scrapheap where it belongs.  This is not our state, right now, it’s not even our town.  Until we have something to talk about, maybe we should stick to “Wolfpack Unlimited.”  At least that’s accurate — right now, the Wolfpack seems only capable of unlimited losing.

    JohnGalt78, thanks for the reminder.

Let’s go for “This Is Going To Be Our State” . . . then we just don’t say when.

I heard a new Allsate ad yesterday that we might borrow for a while:

    “Get To A New State”

    To that I say:

“If you build it, we will come”

  4. Alpha Wolf 11/22/2013 at 8:55 AM #

“Our coach holds up a Bojangles cup.”

I’m disappointed they gave up on the whole “State” thing (minus the “NC”). I thought that was perfect. The only argument I hear against is was something about “national recognition” or something. Who cares about that at the moment. It seemed [to me] that the entire fanbase got it and liked it. That alone is worth something. It’s cheap and easy; not bragocious yet instills pride.. I think they should bring that back and commit to it. It’s simple and elegant.
    GO STATE!!!

If Annabelle Vaughn Meyers was a coach she would have been gone years ago. In the time she’s been here what have we done of any significance marketing wise? Now I know that she isn’t the one coming up with these good ideas nor is she the one who comes up with the stinkers. We brought in some dude from somewhere in the Midwest who is clueless about our southern ways and the history and spirit of NC State.

I must admit that if I’d been the one to hire Annabelle, I’d have been blinded by the nice rack myself.

Interesting musings…..and tailgating has not (or should not) have begun….

As to OUR state….I completed my western motor home trip and made two “This is our State” videos at the Pit in ABQ. They are still to be downloaded and edited and may not ever be sent to PackPics…..so much for that theme.

I have a slightly different Logo in mind….even after a glass of wine, my wife did not see the humor….but you guys (girls also if there) are such a bizarre group…..I’ll try it….

Since the IRS has been “abusive” and our most precious data passed around like the second string cheerleader on …….anyway…..use the IRS Logo.

Do it in the Dick Sheridan Style…..do in BLACK.

Then overlay on the top a big CIRLCE – the “NO” with the diagonal cross bar.

So, we have a protest against the IRS….

Then we sell, for a BIG FEE, all the JumboTron spot to all the tax lawyers, financial planners, annuity salesmen, whoever that hawk their services to get you out of trouble with the IRS (and the NC DIR) or the ones that if you follow their advice, you WILL get into trouble.

Now, High Stick, I KNOW you are legitimate….no offense meant.

THEN, at halftime, we have a presentation for the “Spirit of the PACK” award. Sidney Lowe and Koren Robinson are honored for their support of our NEW slogan or theme…..if you don’t quite get the Koren link…..google Koren Robinson Taxes…..a local TV station recycled this recently and he is STILL on the list.

SO….do you think this will fly?

I do NOT know if some of the comments about the “marketing” group are correct. From what I know, I do NOT think that Capital Broadcasting is actually doing much or having any say.

When DY cut the deal with Learfield sports, that pretty much cut out all the Capital Broadcasting input and ties.

Capital Broadcasting OWNS and OPERATES the Blue Ridge “GO PACK” Store…Don’t know if they still do…but it was a Jim Goodmon entity a few years ago.

WRAL’s studios no longer produce the Coach’s Shows. They are now done in house at the Football Center. So, WRAL no longer gets the studio and production fees for that.

In the Learfield announcement, there was some comment about “shifting” the Coach’s show payments from Capital to Learfield…so I think that Learfield is paying the tow for that…but the NEW coach’s do not have the “Media” payments like Roy and Larry have. Their contracts were beefed up so that the AD Budget gets the money and they are expected, I think, to do a “SHOW”.

Could be wrong….will have to re-read Gott and D’s contracts…

Don’t know anything about the “marketing types” in the AD, except that I remember our VP of Sales (tools) making a comment about a new insurance plan being a scam and he said that he ought to know….that he sold cancer insurance and this plan was worse than any that he had ever had to peddle….and our sales were steadily declining….some one whispered (almost stage), “Damn Brother, I don’t think I woulda TOLD that….” and he was gone in less than a year or so…

I too, have been a fan…by my count, since 1957 so that puts me at 56 years and counting….and I have less than 5 more years before I get to have an “Honored” seat at the 50th reunion of the Gold Medal Class of 1968.

However, I’ll probably do what one of our church members did last year. He passed away and when the casket was rolled out of the sanctuary, the organist played the fight song. Brought about some strange looks, some tears and some smiles and some “why are you people smiling?” looks also….but he went out the way he lived his life…

Wife says that she MIGHT honor my request….for that rather than being buried in my Vette…

I still kinda like “This is Our State”. And I’m with some of the other posters in that if our rivals hate it, it must be ok. But I do live 500 miles away, and don’t have to hear it whenever the team loses.

As for the red NC logo, I hate it. Let’s have Tuffy strutting out there. I miss Tuffy. I want more Tuffy dammit!

Don’t suppose: “State Your Intentions Bitch!” would be acceptable?

So whining is going to change something? Man up guys! While we are disappointed, we can still have some class unlike the cheese and whine crowd Tarholes.

Duke has shown what a little patience can do with a good solid coach like many of us believe Coach D will be.

I like the “This is Our State” really thinking we are the only team where STATE really us and the Holes hate it.

As for the logo — now that was not the best of ideas. However, it looks good. Who cares what ECU thinks?

The one thing I absolutely agree on is the “Hey Baby” song. I hate it. It is so stale. Can we not learn something new? I would have said earlier this year that “I’m a Believer” would be great for State fans. But Pitt uses that so maybe not; Anyway, “Hey Baby” does not seem that appropriate for anything. Would love to see the ban step it up with some fresh music.

Anyway, I feel your frustration but come on — Go Wolfpack!

Oops! Guess I was typing too fast and did not proof — obviously! Anyone who wishes to criticize it, knock yourself out. HAPPY FRIDAY!

You guys are very passionate fans. The vast majority of alumni and state citizens could care less what our slogan is.

Mark is similar to Roy in coaching ability. He needs superb talent and experience to win. We knew that when we hired him. By most accounts we will have a good team next year and a very good team in two years. The future looks bright because Mark recruits well.

If he doesn’t work out the benefit of having residual talent is it will be easier to hire Archie.

I think ECU should plant a Pirate flag on the midfield logo at Kenan. Pirates spanked their a__, and unx dances on our logo claiming it their state. Guess they missed the memo, wait maybe it was part of their academic incapabilities.

A man had 50 yard line tickets for the Auburn/Alabama game. As he sits down, a man comes down and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him. “No,” he says, “the seat is empty.”

“This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Auburn/Alabama game, the biggest sporting event in the world, and not use it?”

He says, “Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Auburn/Alabama game we haven’t been to together since we got married in 1967.”

“Oh … I’m sorry to hear that. That’s terrible! But couldn’t you find someone else, a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?”

The man shakes his head. “No, they’re all at her funeral.”

    Bill,

Thanks for messing up my keyboard. I just coughed up a large swallow of my freshly mixed “Black Russian”. I believe that contact cleaner will remove the residue….but if not, I have accidental damage coverage.

I certainly wish that Debbie or Bobby would send that out to the “list” of folks that do not attend. Based on my conversation with the WPC, the addition of the “scanning” of tickets now generates a data base. They KNOW who attends (or actually WHOSE) ticket(s) are used. They have sent out some emails or perhaps made calls….but it is a little awkward. The donors with the prime seats are long time and have been generous. They purchase the seats, but elect not to attend or distribute.

My wife, the years that Matt was filling in for Roy, before he knew that he DID give a $hit about UNC, had her choice of many FREE DeanDome tickets. Her boss had four PRIME seats and got disgusted and would give them out to his staff or anyone in the office. She got them a few times for some TOUGH TICKET games…..

But, what can you do…..? anyway….your old joke made me laugh on a day where there is a lot of somberness….

    For lack of a forum:

In the first night of D-League action, Richard Howell had a very strong night with 21 points (8/10 shooting), 12 boards and 5 dimes for good measure while helping his team win. CJ had 16 points, 7 boards in a losing effort. Lo Brown got called up to the Sixers, and played 5 minutes tonight. Woo is averaging 13.3/game shooting 57% from 2, 46.5% from 3 while drinking sangria overseas. Of course he’s 100% from the line, although he’s only shot 4. If you’re interested, the D League games are streamed free on YouTube. I watched a bit of CJ’s game tonight.

Since it’s tired and not even original, change it to:

“This is the State we’re in.”

All you “Fire Lee Fowler” idiots must be really embarrassed now. It cost over a million dollars to get rid of him. The new AD makes over 100 grand more each year than Lee did. Dr. Goodnight cancelled his $100 million dollar donation commitment. Fund raising money slowed to a trickle and the teams are worse now than they were when Fowler was your AD.

  19. WolftownVA81 11/24/2013 at 1:17 PM #

Fowler had to go. That shouldn’t even be a discussion point.
