It’s Time To Retire “This Is Our State” — It’s Become An Embarrassing Joke

After last night’s 82-72 overtime loss to NC Central, on the way home, I saw a rather forlorn yard sign wavering in the cool November breeze: “This Is Our State!”

As I drove past, still stinging from the worst major sports loss for the Wolfpack in at least the past ten years, a slight gust pushed the sign over.  Witnessing that was a fitting end to a miserable night in NC State sports.

Considering that NC State has lost to every in-state rival since September save for Appalachian, the Wolfpack has hardly shown the sort of dominance that would make such a brag the least bit appropriate.

And there’s undoubtedly more losses on the way: this weekend, NC State will host a “home” game against East Carolina in Carter-Finley that’s sure to be a bowl-like 50/50 atmosphere, at best.  More than likely, it’s going to be full of Pirates, cheering on their team as it tramples the hapless Wolfpack, and in between deriding NC State for “stealing its logo” and “stealing the ECU first down chant.”  Sounds like a lovely way to spend the afternoon, especially when on top of that, fans at the game will have to hear about the “This is our State” slogan besides.

Hopefully, ECU’s horde of happy Pirates won’t tear down the goalposts inside Carter-Finley, as is their custom.  Hopefully.

And it may get even worse: with Duke getting all it could handle from the Pirates basketball team, and based upon the performance that the NC State cagers put up against NC Central last night, when the Pirates come back next month, they’ll probably go back to Green Vegas with a win in hoops too.

In fact, State’s performances have been so inept in football and now basketball, the slogan has become a cruel joke that Wolfpackers everywhere have to hear when they go to work on yet another morning after yet another defeat.  Wolfpackers are a thick skinned lot even in the best of times; it comes with living in the same neighborhood as Duke and UNC — universities that win conference and national championships in basketball on a regular basis.  And soon, Duke may well become the second team from North Carolina to play for an ACC Title in football’s modern era of having a championship game.  NC State, on the other hand, has never played in a BCS Bowl or for that matter one of the five big postseason games in its entire football history.

This is our state, indeed.

All that in mind, it’s time to quietly retire the slogan and put it on the scrapheap where it belongs.  This is not our state, right now, it’s not even our town.  Until we have something to talk about, maybe we should stick to “Wolfpack Unlimited.”  At least that’s accurate — right now, the Wolfpack seems only capable of unlimited losing.

Pathetic response if you ask me.

I hope there is another Pirate Riot, and DY opens her eyes and cancels the series once and for all. The one she foolishly extended through 2022 earlier in the week.

The market will speak, and speak loudly on Saturday. It’s a game the methheads want, and our people don’t. Thus, even in a more favorable environment (ie, our not sucking out loud, with little to no chance of victory), you can’t sell your tickets at face value to Pack fans. But you can always get double or triple that from the Purple Methheads. Because this is their Super Bowl, something that gives them a platform to validate their program’s existence.

It does absolutely NOTHING for NC State, even if we win by 50. There’s no reason to play this game (yes, I mean we should dare the legislature to do anything about it – the Basnight machine doesn’t run things anymore), and scheduling it is foolish at best.

Yes, Alpha, Wolfcrackers are very thick skinned folk.

About as thick as the “Blue People” of Appalachia.

  4. budfox88 11/21/2013 at 4:01 PM #

DY, you must be kidding? I’ve seen it before, and that was some game of “deny the obvious turd on the billboard with some ambiguous doublespeak”.

  5. wolf71 11/21/2013 at 4:12 PM #

Hopefully change is coming! Starting with DY and keep going! Maybe a new AD will come and change the marketing dept and maybe one day have a legitimate athletic dept! One that is competitive and cares and not celebrate mediocrity including being happy that we are still signing 2 star recruits!

Hell, Mississippi doesn’t belong to MSU any more than NC belongs to NCSU.. We can’t even steal a good slogan…

I’m just hoping that EZU doesn’t prove that again this weekend w/yet another disco on our 50-yard line

  7. DC_wolf 11/21/2013 at 4:39 PM #

& thanks for posting, Alpha. It needs to be said. Again. And again.

  8. WTNY 11/21/2013 at 4:40 PM #

As someone somewhere else said: This is our Zip Code!

(We just need to make sure we don’t play Meredith anytime soon).

DY Win first and then market. Or better yet just win.

CowDog= State fans are the thickest skinned fans there are. They just do all their complaining to each other. Now I bet that is what you meant. Right!

It’s hard being a State fan.

  10. TheCOWDOG 11/21/2013 at 5:07 PM #

    Well,…Not exactly Tuffy.

I treat this here board as if I were out in public.

Did ya hear the one about the 14yr old vir….

We used to be ECU’s Super Bowl. Not a big deal to beat us this year, is it?

…and, The Carolina Way….is by far the most embarrassing solgan ever in the history of all time and even before that. The Our State thing is just stupid.

  12. Wufpacker 11/21/2013 at 5:25 PM #

State fans are the thickest skinned fans there are. They just do all their complaining ABOUT each other.

    FTFY

I honestly couldn’t care any less about the slogan. I do remember thinking it was clever when I first saw it. Never knew it came from MSU. Whatever.

When my Marines start complaining, I listen and then say, “well what is your recommendation?” A complaint w/o a good recommendation is childish. I’m literally laughing reading ppl calling to fire DY. Anyway, I digress… If you are going to bitch about the slogan then recommend a new one. Otherwise you sound kinda like a bitch. Btw, see what I did there, I complained about a problem them recommended a solution that doesn’t make you look like a bitch
    GO PACK!

  14. Alpha Wolf 11/21/2013 at 5:39 PM #

Firing Debbie Yow — or any of the coaches, particularly Doeren at this point — is an emotional response that would likely get me to offer the fellow who said a beer to calm his nerves.

I for one will never give up on NC State, not as a school, not as a team, but I will say out loud when it is time to stop being braggadocios without cause. With that in mind, I will politely disagree with Debbie Yow on the slogan.

As for a recommendation for a new slogan, something like “Fearless” works for me. And it is accurate. We don’t fear UNC, we hate ’em. We damn sure don’t fear ECTC, we loathe them. And so on.

  15. Wufpacker 11/21/2013 at 5:42 PM #

Wait…are you saying that if we say “Fire DY”, we get a beer?

I might be rethinking my position.

  16. Greywolf 11/21/2013 at 5:44 PM #

You know, if you used the “This is our State” slogan as a brag, then I can see the embarrassment that has caused. The problem with Debbie is she’s an adult.

“This is our State” as a declaration of ownership, something to live into, is totally appropriate. Do you want the recruiters to hit the recruiting trail with their tail between their legs bemoaning the fact that we lost a game (or games for those of you who think we should win every game) we should have won?

UNC lost to Belmont. Do you think they have folded their tent? No but the fans here have. We are stumbling all over top of each other to see who can say the most derogatory statement.

I could have listened to Alpha IF this rant had been when “This is our State” was first proclaimed. It is unfortunate that TOB’s saying it WAS a bit braggish.

We all want to win. Many of us think we are positioned better than we ever have. We have a supportive chancellor, Athletics Director and the coaching situation is better across the board than it has been in a long time if not ever.

I assert what wanted and needed is for our fans to get behind the stand,”This is our State”? Let’s put on our ‘Big Boy’ pants get behind the teams and coaches who are out their with the attitude that “This is our State.”

  17. Alpha Wolf 11/21/2013 at 5:44 PM #

LOL, I am brewing some beer tomorrow. It will be ready to soothe my nerves down the stretch of the ACC schedule and will take me back up to having 20-odd gallons on hand here at the house.

  18. Alpha Wolf 11/21/2013 at 5:46 PM #

Speaking of sports marketing, I have ALWAYS loved this old Alabama entrance video. Any video that shows your arch-rival crying on the sidelines is A-OK by me.

  19. Greywolf 11/21/2013 at 5:48 PM #

The fact the Holes hate our using “This is our State” is its biggest attraction for me. Are we going to lie here and let them claim to be the flag ship without fighting back? Not me.

  20. redcanine 11/21/2013 at 5:49 PM #

Renounce hatred. Adore State red. (with a United Way seal below)

  21. Wufpacker 11/21/2013 at 5:50 PM #

    20 odd gallons.
    Party at Alpha’s house.
    No bitching allowed.

  22. Wufpacker 11/21/2013 at 5:54 PM #

Alpha, that’s the best example of ‘Tebowing’ I’ve ever seen.

  23. JohnGalt78 11/21/2013 at 5:55 PM #

“….What? Over? Did you say OVER? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!…..”

  24. Wufpacker 11/21/2013 at 5:57 PM #

    Heh…wait for it. There’s always one….

  25. lumbee wolfman 11/21/2013 at 6:17 PM #

Hey, JohnGalt78, it wasn’t over when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. But if the Germans bomb Pearl Harbor, it’ll probably be over …………. LMAO!!!!

To everyone else “This is Our State” is a mindset. Change your mind and the rest will follow.

Also let’s STOP PLAYING “Hey Baby” between the 3rd and 4th quarter. Wake Forest has played that for years at Grove. Let’s play “I WON’T BACK DOWN” by Tom Petty. That would fit!!!
