Pack vs. Deacs – Raging Semi-Live Blog

This week, we have an interesting matchup (bad league foe on the road is a good acid test for a team likely to be on the bowl qualification fence), combined with a dearth of channel flipping options. Thus, you good people get to suffer through at least sort of a live blogging.

The early slate is quite meh (living up to my expectations), so I have nothing clever to say pre-kickoff. See you in 90-ish minutes.

3:07 – I assume (and am prepared to be furious when said assumption is wrong) that FSCR will break away from the Ball State/WaHooWa thriller for our kickoff. Third quarter just ended in HooVille.

3:18 – The Holes are officially dead in the water. Huzzah!

3:33 – Time to switch feeds, fuckwits.

3:38 – Fury has begun, full force.

3:40 – I have seen FSCR cut away to the Holes and Devils on numerous occasions. But not for NC State, when they can show the end of an uncompetitive MAC blowout of an out-of-state team. Total f-ing bullshit.

3:43 – This is how one gets treated in Swoffy’s ACC. One set of rules for the blues, one for everyone else.

3:48 – Per GameTracker, teams have traded touchback punts.

3:52 – 4th and 2 from Wake 35 – we should have gone for it or kicked a FG. QB pooch punt was a weak call.

3:54 – Ball State can run out the clock now. Thank God. But count on a coach interview and a long commercial break. Because we aren’t one of the blues.

3:56 – Oh goodie. We get Wes Durham too.

3:57 – Ridiculous spot and Wake will have a first down inside our 15. Punting is a bad idea in any close situation. Exhibit A.

4:01 – First score of the game is a Wake TD. FFS. Same shit, different year.

4:02 – Do remember that Wake’s defense has struggled even more than its offense. We should score plenty. SHOULD.

4:05 – Possible kickoff return fumble. Nobody saying anything, though I think down by contact. Not looking like our day.

4:09 – Offense on the move. Need to finish this drive. LiveBlog will take a cooking break now.

4:47 – Cooking completed, and Wake has bled a shitton of clock. 7-3, nearing the two minute non-warning.

4:50 – Wake with a silly 14 yard punt. Stupid, now we need to capitalize.

4:52 – Wide open deep throw, perfect by Thomas…and it’s dropped. Flat out dropped. Wake’s front seven is so slow that Thomas is killing them with his LEGS. It’s the only thing that’s working for us.

5:01 – It’s a half full of coaching Karma – we also punish Grobe’s weak punt decision with seven, and it’s 10-7 Pack.

5:02 – Was feeling good until the secondary shat the bed. Ugh.

5:04 – Aaaaaannnnd the game feed goes kaput. Mickey Mouse crap.

5:06 – Per GameTracker…TD pass to Campanaro on 3rd and goal. 6 seconds left. Good Lord.

Your Halftime Score – Wake 14, State 10.

5:26 – In case you were wondering, Clemson murdering Cuse even worse than they did Wake. Miami on the march to take the lead. I think they are really just a rich man’s Maryland – good enough to win 7-8 games against an ACC schedule, but no threat to Clemson or FSU.

5:29 – Now that I can see the replay…Campanaro WAS double covered, but each guy foolishly bit on the double move. Duh, it was third and goal FFS.

5:31 – Smith’s injury is huge – this kind of front seven would be sliced and diced by the jet sweep.

5:35 – What would have been a 60-yard TD to Underwood is just a yard or two overthrown. Ramos’ circus catch is wasted and State will punt.

5:39 – Empty backfield, somehow NOBODY diagnoses the OBVIOUS QB draw.

5:41 – Better late than never I guess.

5:43 – FG is good, lead is seven. But no…we ROUGHED THE FUCKING KICKER.

5:48 – Immediate TD and State is in deep wolfshit.

5:53 – Offense is on the move again. Gonna need at least two TDs.

6:00 – The toss sweep is ineffective, 4th and goal. Kicking the FG, ugh.

6:11 – Now the defense steps up, and the offense fades. Very frustrating. And my kids are fighting over shoes. Fucking shoes. This is my life.

6:13 – ACC football. Still a dumpster fire. 3rd quarter is kaput, 21-13 Wake.

6:17 – Three and out redux. On the bright side…terrific punt.

6:21 – That was NOT a horsecollar. But Campanaro convinces the gullible ref anyway. Again…God, how I hate the ACC.

We graduated 19 seniors last year and now have added to that by virtue of injuries.

    Down Seniors
    1) Crisp LT
    2) Cato-Bishop DE
    3) Smith WR Return Specialist
    4)Byrd S
    5) Mitchell QB

This doesn’t even account for losing Dayes and Valdes-Scantling. Throw everything to the curbside because there is nothing going on except getting guys to play hard and recruiting on the side from today on.

I’m thankful that Dorean is a no nonsense guy. 6-6 looks like a loooong shot and I would hate to have to hear beat around the bush crap for this season to forget. We are bad and trying to mask just how bad that is.

  2. 13OT 10/05/2013 at 11:14 PM #

We aren’t very good, that’s obvious, and we’re not going to be even mediocre until we get someone who understands how to play the QB position.

I’m not knocking Thomas, but he’s simply awful at the QB position and there are some things that just can’t be taught.

Doeren has drawn the Old Maid this season in terms of personnel, and he’s playing this hand about as well as he can. But make no mistake about it; despite how good Doeren is, and I believe he’s a really good coach who could be destined for greatness, until he gets a real QB, we’ll stay mired in mediocrity.

And when Louisville comes into the Atlantic Division next season, we are really screwed. Someone in the ACC front office needs to look hard at division re-alignment, and soon.

Agree that Thomas does not have the goods.

In WS today, what a joke! Refs BS calls, and BS play by the defense, BS offensive play calling with the horizontal pass that never ever worked, and a QB who is mediocre, and lacks the confidence and ability to play big time college football. Anxiously await the return of Mitchell. 6 losses in WS, now! Unreal! Inexcusable!!!!

  5. choppack1 10/06/2013 at 12:31 AM #

Today represented a chance for Dave Doreen to prove he wax different than his predecessors.

He didn’t do it…this display was awful. However, its his first season so i’m not giving up yet.

  6. inhoc... 10/06/2013 at 1:26 AM #

“BS offensive play calling with the horizontal pass that never ever worked”

    Worked for WF…All. Day. Lonng.

  7. tjfoose1 10/06/2013 at 1:41 AM #

Thomas is not horrible. He’s they very least, he’s no worse than serviceable.

3-2, 7 gamed left. I’d say we’re still in line for the 5 to 8 wins most reasonable folks were predicting in the preseason.

Assuming folks get healthy, of course

  8. tjfoose1 10/06/2013 at 1:46 AM #

“Today represented a chance for Dave Doreen to prove he wax different than his predecessors.”

You think he has yet to prove that? This loss is not on DD.

Sometimes I start to think the man-on-street electorate might be more knowledgeable than this crowd.

  9. inhoc... 10/06/2013 at 1:53 AM #

Its really surprising how close all the stats are. Top to bottom they are very even, minus the score. It seemed like WF only punted a couple times, but they punted 7 times if I remember correctly.

It felt like they kept the ball away the whole game with those little bullshit 3 to 4 yard plays. Every ball carrier would get hit behind the line of scrimmage and somehow end up in a pile falling past the first down marker.

    On a separate thought:

I’d like to have some light shed on all the pre-snap penalties, especially the illegal formation calls. I think there have also been too men in motion and not enough men on the line in the last few games.

  10. mak4dpak 10/06/2013 at 5:11 AM #

The horizontal pass may have worked for WF, but for us it never did, but we kept going back to it. That’s on Canada. We hang with Clemson, who dismantles WF. Just don’t get it. Again inexcusable! Obviously poorly prepared for this one. Guess the Syracuse game, plus Mitchell @ QB, will show what we are made of.

  11. redisgood 10/06/2013 at 7:54 AM #

I was expecting stinker losses in DD’s first year. Unfortunately that doesn’t make it feel any better. I’m also a little concerned expectations some have of Mitchell may be too high. He could be an upgrade over Thomas, but we still have a fairly serious lack of overall talent that Mitchell cannot overcome, and will take some solid recruiting to fix.

I hated yesterday’s game with a passion, and hate we have to wait two more years to go back to WS and kick their asses.

  12. GAWolf 10/06/2013 at 8:03 AM #

Yall want a good litmus test for where things were with TOB as he exited? We were absolutely banking on Pete Thomas at QB. We had no Brandon Mitchell, who unfortunately is in a boot.

So… this year would have been virtually hopeless at this stage in the season. As it is now, if Mitchell can get back there’s hope. Hope is all we’ve had for the majority of the years I’ve been a lifelong Pack fan.

  13. BJD95 10/06/2013 at 8:51 AM #

People need to be MUCH less spoiled. Weis inherited a similar dumpster fire at KS, and they went 1-11 in their first year. You should be damned grateful that DD has used duct tape and chicken wire to get us competitive, where we could actually be DISAPPOINTED over a road conference loss.

As far as coaching schemes – given what we did to fluster Clemson (see what they did at Syracuse for comparison), I will give them the benefit of the doubt. Once they have sufficient talent, we could be in for a treat. Or we can tantrum like whiny toddlers because we didn’t get exactly what we wanted, right away. Jeebus.

  14. GAWolf 10/06/2013 at 10:06 AM #

The monkey board is freaking embarrassing. This place, frankly, isn’t much better. One poster over there pointed out that we didn’t have a single all-conference player return. We have maybe one all conference guy on this team this year and he’s a kicker.

We have what? 6 starters out hurt limping into the fourth quarter of this game? In a perfect world we should absolutely have the man power to endure this game and leave with a victory. See Georgia at Tennessee. The problem? The two best running backs from NC play for Georgia. We just aren’t Georgia, and we unfortuntely will likely never be Georgia. So, people need to be realists. While that’s hard to do, it’s necessary for one’s sanity as a Pack fan.

  15. MP 10/06/2013 at 11:28 AM #

Good post and perspective re: TOB and this season by GAWolf. This season is simply a rebuild. If we make any bowl that is best case scenario.

  16. redisgood 10/06/2013 at 11:36 AM #

I am absolutely thrilled we have DD as our coach. The energy he has injected in the program, his recruiting ability, and just generally working his ass off tells me he will get us there. This year should not be about wins and losses.

  17. TheCOWDOG 10/06/2013 at 12:02 PM #

Wow…I was wondering where my favorite fans have been.

To understand a loss like that, is to understand the meaning of road flat.

They were not emotionally / mentally right for their first trip away from the comfort of home. New staff and an unfamiliar routine. I. know how that goes, and recognized it in a heartbeat.

So…It’s in the books and out of the way.
On the plus side, Wes Welker of Wake can forever go and torment someone else, now.

  18. vtpackfan 10/06/2013 at 2:12 PM #

I too know from experience the “Road trip flat Blues”……no, wait, I have conception or clue how that must feel.

I can make up a song of that title in the key of G and play it on harmonica. Think I’ll do that and be thankful DD can recruit his tail off AND he didn’t hire Vince Koenig 🙂

  19. 1time 10/06/2013 at 2:46 PM #

    New coaching staff > ??? Brandon Mitchell > ???

If you answer, please try provide some factual data to back up what, at this particular point in time, can only be your own personal opinion.

  20. bTHEredterror 10/06/2013 at 2:59 PM #

Better to get the customary Grobing out of the way in a year with low expectations.

  21. choppack1 10/06/2013 at 3:15 PM #

I swear…folks need to learn some basic reading comprehension.

If someone says “this result is the same as the last 5, but I haven’t given up yet’…it doesn’t mean = fire the coach, he obviously sucks.

At the end of the day I trust my evaluations….and I was happy with this hire. However, I certainly haven’t seen enough to think this guy is the next Vince Lombardi or the next tom reed.

If you were’nt disappointed in our performance yesterday then I don’t know what it takes. And let me add some clarification since apparently it’s necessary: when I say differentiate I am talking about the only difference that really matters (on the field) wins and losses. And just because he didn’t get the “w” here or even gets it at all this year, it doesn’t mean he wont.

The beauty of sports is that there is another day and you throw out the records next game.

  22. wolfpup44 10/06/2013 at 3:22 PM #

Yesterday would have been a great way to carve out a bowl season with relatively weak schedule. However, I always have a bad feeling about playing WF in W-S. Why do we never play well there? A QB with a 2-7 TD to pick ratio does not look promising. At this point I just DD to have us ready for UNC. The battle for the bottom.

  23. tjfoose1 10/06/2013 at 3:28 PM #

” If you answer, please try provide some factual data to back up what, at this particular point in time, can only be your own personal opinion.”

Please explain this question. I obviously misunderstand, for I’ve always been told there is no such thing as a dumb question.

  24. 1time 10/06/2013 at 3:32 PM #

    ^ That’s what I’m saying also choppack.

I don’t understand why so many are now, or why so many have done the same thing in the past, in immediately proclaiming Dave Doeren, or once TOB, or pretty much whomever, as the next saviour in west Raleigh. And, even many times defending those unfounded notions at the expense of the players/kids who are suiting up in Wolfpack uniforms. ???

  25. Wulfpack 10/06/2013 at 3:55 PM #

I think Doeren is an excellent coach. I think he will get hs turned around in 2-3 years time, which is only fair. I also think he and the team had a bad day yesterday. NC State should never be drubbed by Wake.
