Brandon Mitchell to start @FSU

Brandon Mitchell

Brandon Mitchell will return for the Wolfpack on Saturday in Tallahassee, as the Pack tries to keep up with the 3rd ranked Florida State Seminoles in Doak S. Campbell Stadium (3:30pm ABC/ESPN2).

Despite being ranked 3rd in both major polls, Florida State debuted at #2 in the first BCS standings of the season.

Mitchell, who began the season as the Pack’s starting QB vs La Tech, went down to injury with a broken foot only 15 plays into the Pack’s opener vs the Bulldogs way back on August 31st.  Since that time, he’s spent considerable time looking like this….

Brandon-mitchell-crutches

It will be nice to see him once again look like this….

NCAA Football: Louisiana Tech at North Carolina State

Before his early exit that day, his stat line was 3/3 passing for 93 yards (including a 56 yard strike to Rashard Smith), and 5 rushes for 19 yards.  Hopefully he can shake off the rust reasonably quickly and add a bit more dimension on the offensive side of things, and maybe even keep the Pack closer than the Vegas boys think.

State is currently a 4+ touchdown dog on Saturday.

Rob Crisp and Daryl Cato-Bishop both continue to be conspicuously absent from the Pack’s depth chart.

It is becoming more and more likely that Crisp, who will miss his 5th consecutive game after suffering a concussion on Sept. 7th vs Richmond, may not see the field again in ’13 and may instead go the medical redshirt route.

Kickoff for the Carolina game next weekend (November 2) will be at 12:30pm.  Obviously, that (stupid) time means the game will be televised on the ACC Network.

I’d still take FSU giving the points.

Winston ain’t your average baller, skills and between the ears. He won’t let ’em let up.

My biggest worry is that BM’s return is a short one. I’d take a 20 point loss with a healthy BM for u*nc right now.

    Ply-Re Dabo:

“And while Swinney says there were a couple of areas the Seminoles “were a bit ahead” of his Tigers, he believes Florida State just caught Clemson on a bad night.”

Yeah, and Custer and his boys had a similar bad day at Little Bighorn…

Just watched the end of State over FSU from Doak-Campbell in 2001 on ESPN Classic yesterday morning so I’m inspired. Noles 35 Pack 14.

After reading Dabo’s comments, wondering if anyone has given him the concussion test.

  5. EdMar 10/23/2013 at 8:51 AM #

Have we ever been that much of an underdog?
I hope that is not too embarrassing and that we do not lose half a dozen players for the rest of the year.
Or we could hope (not bet) for an outright win! Go Pack, do the best you can!

  6. wolfpackdawg 10/23/2013 at 9:26 AM #

Dabo is such a dooshbag and I’m so glad we didn’t end up with Chad Morris here.

  7. vtpackfan 10/23/2013 at 9:29 AM #

I’m not going to concede a half, game, or the season until I see the trio of Brandon, Rashard and Shadrach play together. Individually none of them wow you as “game changer” players but these are our best three players at the most critical positions in Canada’s offense. They haven’t played single down together.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we cover because Winstonian the Barbarian can’t conquer if he’s on the sideline. Stay on the field, utilize Sade’s leg, and get atleast one big gainer for a TD. Put 17-20 points up and we will likely cover.

FSU will win handily. They’re at home, very deep and talented, playing for something (need to stay ahead of Oregon to get a shot at Alabama) and are highly confident. We’re beat up, playing out of state for the first time all season, basically bringing out the equivalent of a redshirt freshman for his first game at QB and not talented.

Our goal should be to keep it under 14 points and keep everyone healthy. Granted if your goal is the second, then you typically play cautious and get hurt.

Me? I’d come right out, take the ball (if I won the coin flip) and throw the bomb the first or second play. At least it’d keep FSU honest and keep the blitz down some.

With respect to Clemson, Dabo is an idiot. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Clemson lose at least 1-2 more this year despite how much talent they have.

I’m also glad we didn’t give Chad Morris his first head coaching job (and over pay to do it). Granted his high school record is extremely impressive and he had a great season in Tulsa in 2010, but I’m not sure that his time at Clemson is as special as the talent he’s coaching. Boyd, those receivers and that line could make a lot of OCs look good. He also had a couple of good offensive players at Tulsa too.

Chop is right, first goal = keep Mitchell healthy. Add that fact to the fact that our OL is a sieve, and I’d say don’t play Mitchell. I know the young man wants to compete, and I know DD’s job is to try and win EVERY game, but whoever plays QB for us on Sat is gonna get destroyed. FSU remembers how we got ’em last year, and they are gonna be motivated. FSU will cover, regardless of the line at gametime.

I would save him, or at least be ready to yank him at a moment’s notice.

Hope BM is a significant improvement over his replacements. Obviously he had seperated himself enough fo DD to name him starter, but still not sure his body of work is enough to say he’s going to be a huge difference. I just hope FSU doesn’t damage him so we can try to get 3 wins beyond this coming weekend’s crush.

  11. wolfonthehill 10/23/2013 at 11:40 AM #

I still remember the absolute demolition we suffered at FSU’s hands a decade or more ago. If my imperfect memory serves me correctly, it was on the order of 77-7… and our lone TD was by Adrian Wilson on a fake (or blocked?) punt.

    Hoping this one’s better than that… I have hope…

  12. wolfonthehill 10/23/2013 at 11:45 AM #

And you guys DO realize that we don’t typically get blown out when we’re expected to get blown out… right? It’s just not our way…

  13. choppack1 10/23/2013 at 1:03 PM #

Wolfonhill – you are getting your blowouts mixed up. The 77-7 game was early in moc era. Adrian Wilson scored on fake punt amato’s first year… I think we lost that one 48-7.

  14. wolfonthehill 10/23/2013 at 2:28 PM #

^ Damned 41 years of age, and countless beers….

  15. BJD95 10/23/2013 at 2:39 PM #

Not only does FSU have motivation to win…they need to do so convincingly, with maximum style points.

Even with a letdown factor after an emotional win, a spread in the low 30s seems about right to me.

What would a moneyline bet on the Pack pay? 30 or 40 to 1??

  16. Master 10/23/2013 at 3:28 PM #

Pack lost to FSU 77-17 in 1995 in Tallahassee, It was My Cocaines 3rd season. Footnote: State beat Wake 52-23 that year in Winston Salem, one of three wins that season.

If our offense can keep their offense off the field (Famous Jameis doesn’t play defense too does he?), it would help our defense keep the score reasonably close. If it’s 3 and out all day, FSU is going to score a lot of points.

Jimmy V’s philosophy of ‘stay in position to win’ is what it’s going to take to beat a more talented FSU team.
That and a few breaks and lucky bounces.

Just because Clempson gave up 51 doesn’t mean we have to. Some of you remember giving up 77. I remember the fumble on the 4 last year.

  18. Wufpacker 10/23/2013 at 4:09 PM #

    “My Cocaines”

That made me chuckle. Wondering how I’ve never seen that before.

    RE: Dabo the DA….

If anybody saw the Clempson team run down the hill (with Dabo the DA leading the charge ) …. you know that game was lost “before” the kickoff.

    Dabo was skyhigh….
    Team was skyhigh….

    Clempson gets the kickoff….
1st play from scrimmage is INT….

Bust goes the bubble from which neither Dabo the DA or his team ever recovered…..

    …. and now he wants a re-match …..

    HA!

    ——————–
I’m pretty sure Coach DD and the Pack won’t be perfect on Saturday….. but I’m sure that ^This is one mistake neither he nor the Pack will make.

  20. NCSU88 10/23/2013 at 5:32 PM #

Well, if they run up the score, we can accuse them of bullying.

  21. Wufpacker 10/23/2013 at 5:38 PM #

We could always rig the brakes on their team bus.

    Just saying.

  22. ryebread 10/23/2013 at 5:39 PM #

bill: I tend to agree regarding Clemson. They were more focused on the pageantry, crowd noise, hype of hosting the game, etc.. Yes, I understand that Clemson does the same type of Howard’s rock thing at every home game, but I feel like Clemson was as focused on trying to host as they were on the game itself.

Clemson needed that first drive to go well. It was a disaster, and that was that. I’ve watched NC State get punched in the face and fold countless times. I know what that looks like.

  23. bill.onthebeach 10/23/2013 at 5:41 PM #

    ^Good Idea Wuf…. but….
Doak Campbell is one the few “on campus” stadiums left…

Noles will be walking not riding….

RB… did you see Dabo the DA jumping up and waving his fist at the crowd ??
He would have done better if he had TOB..ed that entrance.

“’44…You still owe me from last yr. on the FSU game. Never a word from ya.

Wanna double down on a Mark’s Italian?”

Only one of two places you could still get a Mark’s Italian as it closed in the 80’s. One is in Wilson, NC from my father who worked countless hours there growing up. The other is from my grandfather, who along with his brother Mark, owned it. Mark assumed room temperature about a year ago. Maybe I had mentioned my ties to that place before.

It is now a Greek place which I’ve never been to. I prefer a beef on weck’ when I head upstate.

Sniper in a crow’s nest then?

    That’s all I got.
