It’s a Red Out, Not a Black Out on Thursday

There was a misinformed tweet going around last night that State would be wearing all black uniforms on Thursday night for our national TV game vs Clemson but those rumors were 100% false.  The official Twitter handle @PackFootball quickly put an end to those rumors by tweeting out a status and picture.

We will be rockin’ the red Thursday. Will you?

Which got a response from New Orleans Saints TE, and brother of Asa Watson (pictured), Benjamin Watson.

RT @BenjaminSWatson: Lil bro looking swole! Lets go Asa!

So in summary, WEAR RED on Thursday night, dress your kids in all RED and Tell your friends to wear RED.

With that said, I wanted to add my 2 cents on the whole black uniform issue.  It’s a topic that for some reason really works up the State fan base and earlier in the year during one of the Wolfpack Caravans Coach Doeren was asked about black uni’s and said:

“Our fans want to see red and white,” Doeren said. “They don’t want to see black jerseys and matted helmets. They want to see red and white. Our fans are very traditional and very proud of the school colors.”

No don’t get me wrong, I love red and I think the ‘Red Out’ will be great. Half my clothes are red, my car is red, my wife has red hair (not really) and my dog is red (that would be cool though) but if the players and coaches want to wear black uniforms for a game or 2 who really cares? I know it is the older generation that makes a big fuss about non-traditional uniforms but I don’t understand why.  If the coaches and players wanted to wear neon-pink uniforms because they played better or because the recruits like it I am all for it.  As a good friend of mine once said, “If you look good, you feel good, you play good.”

So let’s have it, what’s your opinion on the black uniforms?

I think we should got the Merryland route and have the state flag broken up between our helmets, gloves, and shoes. Would work perfectly with the “This is our STATE” marketing push 🙂

When I played in high school, we had a uniform combination that was all black (it was one of our school colors). Black helmet, jersey, pants and shoes. Must say it was intimidating. Pulled it out for my final game in the playoffs. Came onto the field with “Back in Black” by AC/DC. Years later, ran into a guy who was on the other team. He said it scared them ****less when they saw us. Problem was they got over it. . . and we lost the game. Point being, intimidation ends after the first snap. After that, you could be dressed in powder blue and it wouldn’t matter. I say go for it if the kids like it though . . .does feel pretty cool.

I liked the black uniforms they wore minus the pink. Most home games should be predominately red colors, but mixing it up every now and then is okay with me, as long as the colors that go with the black uniforms, show State colors.

I like the look of all red. But like black too.

All this conversation brings to mind the old joke:

    “Ship is sailing the oceans.
A pirate ship appears on the horizon. The captain says “Men, bring me my red shirt!” The first mate fetches the shirt and the captain successfully leads an attack on the pirates that sinks their ship.
One of the sailors asked the captain “Why do you wear a red shirt in battle?” The captain responded “because if I am wounded, you will not see blood and will continue to fight as if nothing is amiss.” The crew was astounded at the bravery of the captain.
Later, twenty pirate ships appeared on the horizon. The men looked to the captain, waiting for the request that brought everyone so much strength. The captain looked at the horizon and said, “Men, bring me my brown pants!””

So I’m in the camp that I don’t care what color uni’s we wear, as long as we don’t wear brown pants.

Worried about being a copy cat??? Who fishes were the fish aren’t biting? Oregon is raking in recruits and cash. Just saying.

  7. tjfoose1 09/18/2013 at 12:08 AM #

I’m all for copying Oregon’s model. But uni’s are not their model. The uni’s are just one cog in their machine. If Oregon puts on those uni’s without money and that machine behind them, the Ducks are just an average team with a cheap gimmick.

If I’m an NFL owner and want to follow the NE Patriot model, I do a little more than hire a grumpy coach and paint my uni’s red, white, and blue.

If we want to follow Oregon’s lead, the first step is finding our own Phil Knight, and Goodnight ain’t interested.

Cowdog, I always thought you had a little “Mohicans” in you; like a modern-day Natty Bumpo. I believe that’s your neck of the woods.

  9. BassPacker 09/18/2013 at 9:48 AM #

I don’t like black uniforms….maybe its because I fish where the fish aren’t biting alot.

  10. DFMo 09/18/2013 at 9:57 AM #

My sources nearer campus say EZU might be the black out game.

  11. wilmwolf80 09/18/2013 at 11:29 AM #

Cowdog, you are correct about blue being used to good effect. But I believe the backlash over blue trim on our modern unis would rival the black trim hate.

tjfoose- Yes, this is a discussion on a blog, but it is a divisive issue. On every State blog, message board, or gathering, when this topic comes up, it always devolves into the same old arguments. Within five posts here we have the “we are the red and white” argument, the “we’re not Oregon” argument, the “it’s what the kids dig” argument. It is the same thing over, and over, and over again.

Again, we have had some great unis, and some awful ones. At the end of the game, how the uniform looks has very little impact on the outcome. If the kids want black uniforms, let them wear black. They are the ones that have to wear them.

  12. tjfoose1 09/18/2013 at 12:46 PM #

I don’t see any divisiveness or vitriol. Just folks discussing their own personal preference.

  13. redcanine 09/18/2013 at 12:59 PM #

The players can wear whatever they want, if that’s what’s important to them. If someone mentioned to the team that “oh btw, Carolina and Duke wear black too”, would that change their mind?

If it’s about being different and spicing things up, wearing black does more to conform to regional/national trends than to stand apart from the crowd. Its already been taken.

  14. tjfoose1 09/18/2013 at 1:05 PM #

    ^ Righto.

  15. wilmwolf80 09/18/2013 at 1:33 PM #

tjfoose1,perhaps you don’t see any divisiveness here, right now, on this particular blog. That does not mean that it is not a divisive issue. I was speaking from a historical perspective. The topic of black uniforms comes up at least once a year for basketball and football, and each time, the same discussion ensues.

  16. blpack 09/18/2013 at 1:37 PM #

The look Nebraska had last Saturday was not bad. I’d be ok with all black minus the pink. I know this is the trend now to have alternate jerseys and I’m not doing back flips over it, but if it helps get our brand out there and helps recruiting it is fine with me.

  17. Wulfpack 09/18/2013 at 1:42 PM #

I don’t see this as a divisive issue. A divisive issue is more like keeping an underperforming coach too long, or changing the mascot, etc. We’re just talking here, and I don’t think any State fan will stay home over what color the team is wearing on that particular day.

  18. wilmwolf80 09/18/2013 at 5:20 PM #

State fans may not stay home because of the uniforms, but you can better believe they would fire off emails to Debbie in a heartbeat.

And again, this discussion is perfectly fine. But it has been my personal experience that this particular issue is one that causes consternation amongst our fans.

  19. whitefang 09/18/2013 at 6:10 PM #

What cause consternation amongst our fans is getting our asses handed to us, which could happen tomorrow.
Beat Clemson and whatever we wear becomes legend.
I THINK the first sports colors worn by players from our alma mater was pink and blue. While I don’t care about unis in general, not sure I am quite ready for that throwback jersey.

  20. redcanine 09/18/2013 at 6:11 PM #

We are double digit dogs at home. Screw black, might as well wear light blue . Maybe the loss would count against Fedora’s record.

You old farts make the place stink.

IF we had won 8 championships in the last 20 years in red & white, then, YES, you’d better leave it alone.

    But we haven’t.

There needs to be a shedding of the old & taking a stab at something different & exciting. >>>RED<<< is our color, & white (I don't care what the old farts claim "our song" is), grey, silver, chrome, pewter, black, or any other neutral or contrasting color to make the red pop out should be 'game.' Likewise, matte & metallic & glossy finishes should be 'played with' (our current glossy helmets look like finger nail polish or hard candy).

We need a new look[s], new approaches, & a new building of the program to attract top recruits. There's nothing about "doing things the old, traditional way" that attracts a recruit.

  22. redcanine 09/18/2013 at 7:45 PM #

Want to do something unconventional? Fine.

    Change the player’s jersey #
    Offense wears odd-defense wears evens
No braids or long hair hanging out of the helmet- audiences would quickly take notice
    Wear red chin straps
Mom’s maiden name on back of jersey
    Bunt with two strikes

If we’re going to do something different, have it be ORIGINAL!

  23. TeufelWolf 09/18/2013 at 8:09 PM #

Just look at what Nebraska wore last week — horrible!

  24. vtpackfan 09/18/2013 at 8:21 PM #

Have at it-I ruined the surprise. OMG, black gloves.
