It’s a Red Out, Not a Black Out on Thursday

There was a misinformed tweet going around last night that State would be wearing all black uniforms on Thursday night for our national TV game vs Clemson but those rumors were 100% false.  The official Twitter handle @PackFootball quickly put an end to those rumors by tweeting out a status and picture.

We will be rockin’ the red Thursday. Will you?

Which got a response from New Orleans Saints TE, and brother of Asa Watson (pictured), Benjamin Watson.

RT @BenjaminSWatson: Lil bro looking swole! Lets go Asa!

So in summary, WEAR RED on Thursday night, dress your kids in all RED and Tell your friends to wear RED.

With that said, I wanted to add my 2 cents on the whole black uniform issue.  It’s a topic that for some reason really works up the State fan base and earlier in the year during one of the Wolfpack Caravans Coach Doeren was asked about black uni’s and said:

“Our fans want to see red and white,” Doeren said. “They don’t want to see black jerseys and matted helmets. They want to see red and white. Our fans are very traditional and very proud of the school colors.”

No don’t get me wrong, I love red and I think the ‘Red Out’ will be great. Half my clothes are red, my car is red, my wife has red hair (not really) and my dog is red (that would be cool though) but if the players and coaches want to wear black uniforms for a game or 2 who really cares? I know it is the older generation that makes a big fuss about non-traditional uniforms but I don’t understand why.  If the coaches and players wanted to wear neon-pink uniforms because they played better or because the recruits like it I am all for it.  As a good friend of mine once said, “If you look good, you feel good, you play good.”

So let’s have it, what’s your opinion on the black uniforms?

I think black uni’s are awesome and don’t have a problem with it – on occasion (once or twice in a football season and/or a few times in a basketball season).

If the kids/team like them (and/or recruits), then hey – go for it … But red + white is where the heart and home are for State.

I’m all in for creative uni’s. I love what Oregon does.

And to the stout traditionalists, well you wouldn’t dare go back to pink and green.

But Red is the greatest color in the world and black looks good with Red. GO PACK!

Coach Doeren said it: “Our fans want to see red and white. They don’t want to see black jerseys and matted helmets. They want to see red and white. Our fans are very traditional and very PROUD of the school colors.” I like this guy more every day.. & if he brings home orange & purple scalps on thursday it might be love.

rtpack24 – you are correct!! a FULL moon this Thursday night! OOOWWWWOOOOO!!!

I gotta go work on my “swole”

    Just win baby!
But if you could do it in red and white, even better!

I really, really don’t care. Like Jay Cutler-level don’t care. As long as we don’t wear ridiculous looking crap (ala Oregon and Maryland), I’m content.

I’m an old fart (or at least think I am – Freshman in NC States 83 Championship year). I love the black but also the traditional red and white. I think it is good to mix it up a bit. I think it really does make a difference in recruiting as well. We don’t have the “power house” football historical success that other big schools have had in football. They can stay very traditional and still get recruits. I think we need to mix it up a bit and get kids interested in NC State even if it means doing something a little different with our uniforms (especially the helmet). Let’s get creative!

My preference is for red and white but I’m open to some change. However, the uniforms should enhance the viewing experience not be the center of it. When the announcers start taking time to talk about the uniforms, then you know you’ve gone too far.

Chiefs looked fine in all red when the beat “America’s Team” on Sunday.

We don’t need to impress recruits with uniforms. NFL scouts don’t do fashion shows. Recruit talent and develop them to play on Sundays. Everything else is meaningless.

99% of the time, football fans are a macho bunch. But holy cow! Mention uniforms and everyone goes all project runway. I prefer leather skirts and stiletto heels, but that is a whole other conversation.

Edit: not on me of course. (not that there is anything wrong with it)

Any fashion conscious player will tell you…” It’s all in how you accessorize.”

Black is becoming cliche. Count me out, personally. But to each his own. I just have one request. If/when we do, please, PLEASE, drop the pink numbering.

I understand the cause behind it, but we don’t need pink numbers. There are hundred’s of other ways to convey the same message.

  12. tjfoose1 09/17/2013 at 1:23 PM #

    u*nc has black uni’s.

  13. tjfoose1 09/17/2013 at 1:29 PM #

But if we do go all black, I say take a page out of Jack Holley’s Wallace Rose Hill play book and include brown footballs on the chest.

Sneaky fellow that Holley. Wing-T offense, misdirection every play, all black uni’s, low lit stadium, and damn freak’n brown footballs one every freak’n damn jersey.

Hated that S@#t. But Bravo, sir.

Put me down for Red and White. 99% of the time we wear Black, we play like crapola.
Also, EVERY State game should be a RED OUT by fans (home or away)!

  15. old13 09/17/2013 at 2:47 PM #

I think that the black unis with the red hats look pretty good. And the logo does stand out on it. Ultimately, though, I don’t care what the uni design is if the players are happy with it and it’s not too crazy (al la UMd Turdles.) I’m much more interested in how those wearing it perform in it!

  16. bill-1956 09/17/2013 at 3:20 PM #

I’m for whatever the kids want to wear.

Black unis or some combination? Fine with me. In fact, I’m kind of partial to camo.

Bottom line – again – whatever the kids want to wear. I’m going to cheer them on. They are the ones playing – so whatever they’re wearing – “I’m fer it”.

  17. redcanine 09/17/2013 at 3:47 PM #

I get bad vibes about novelty uniforms. GT put ugly bee hives on theirs, but it hasn’t helped recruiting. Maryland got worse after their decision to go with some Jackson Pollack looking junk. VT came out in camo and lost to Boise St.

When has this idea ever worked???

“When has this idea ever worked???”

Football is a copycat sport. Everyone is trying to copy Oregon, or at least get a piece.

Eastern Washington copied Boise St. Worked out pretty well for them.

Never before in the history of fandom has such a ridiculously stupid issue been so divisive to a fanbase as black uniforms are for NC State fans. It’s just a uniform. We’ve had some awesome ones, and we’ve had some really, really bad ones. Everyone has. Players wear uniforms, not fans, so it should come down to the choice of the players. If we wear black uniforms, or pink ones, or whatever else that doesn’t change the school colors. There are so many that are so caught up on the “red and white” aspect, that ANY black on the uniforms bothers them. That is just ridiculous. If you know anything about art or design, you know that we NEED the black on the uniforms for definition. It helps the red and white stand out, be visible, and easier to read from a distance. Let it go people. Let it go.

No, Wilm. Ya don’t “need” black.

It used to be Navy trim for sports that…trimmed.

Again, these kids don’t give a sh** about the base colors, necessarily. It’s what they can personally dress it out with.

Manziel does it exceptionally well, for instance.

    And…It…is…a…conscious effort. Believe it.

  22. tjfoose1 09/17/2013 at 7:07 PM #

    ” …been so divisive ”

Really? Divisive? I don’t think anyone brought in any divisive words until you did. Looks to me to be nothing more than a friendly discussion amongst those with a common interest. You know, what blogs are for.

  23. tjfoose1 09/17/2013 at 7:12 PM #

    “If you know anything…”

Oh, bring out the big guns, the old ‘call everyone who doesn’t agree with you stupid” tactic. Yep, that should put it to bed.

  24. TheCOWDOG 09/17/2013 at 7:23 PM #

Chingachgook, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud…would be welcomed on this thread.

I’ll see what I can channel.
