“Morning After” Webrun

Not doing my own write up on this one.  No, not because we lost.  I’m not a sore loser.  Well, mostly.  Just have a busy day today and tomorrow so I’ll leave it to the guys who actually get paid for it.

But of course we did lose.  Now we move on.

Thursday, 8pm, ESPN.  Pack vs Heels for the 5th time this year.  So far each team has taken 2 apiece so maybe it’s appropriate.

Loser goes home, winner must beat UCLA twice to make the championship series.

Tonight at 8pm on ESPN, Oregon State and Indiana go at it for the right to have to beat Mississippi State twice in the other bracket.

NC State falls to UCLA 2-1, will meet UNC again at CWS (CharlotteObserver.com)

Pitching and defense carried the Bruins (46-17) to this point, and it carried them again on Tuesday night. They threw out a runner at home in the third inning, and then left fielder Christoph Bono, who entered the game as a defensive replacement, preserved UCLA’s lead with an over-the-shoulder catch in left field in the eighth inning.

Bono’s catch effectively ended the Wolfpack’s final scoring chance. Leadoff batter Trea Turner came to the plate with runners on first and second with one out, and he drove Dave Berg’s pitch to deep left. But Bono caught it on the run, near the warning track.

Off the bat, it appeared Turner might have hit the pitch well enough to send it over the fence for a go-ahead three-run home run.

“I was dumb enough to (think it was out),” Turner said. “That’s about as good as I can hit a ball right. And unfortunately it fell a few feet short and that could have been the difference in the game.”

Berg, one of the best closers in the country, then struck out Jake Fincher to end the inning and leave the two runners stranded. Berg, who entered the game with a 0.87 ERA in 47 appearances this season, earned his 23rd save of the season. That ties an NCAA single-season record.

Speck’ there ain’t many that can figure this out, and it will certainly be the a big part of the conservation by the the pair calling the game. I put my Avent hat on after the UCLA loss, figured this is what we’d see, so I ain’t surprised.

I expect Austin to have a monster game tonight at the plate. Yep. They’re flipping him around to the right side, he’ll find the gap at least twice, giving us some punch from the 3-hole. Senay gonna get up some lefty like he did that boy from Vandy last year. Pack’s in business. I feel it.

We need to emphasize our bats…Hobbs Johnson is due to be knocked out of the game. We can win with our bats as easily as anyone else. Too bad we didn’t show any maturity against the UCLA pitching….some of those balls were shoulder high.

If this was back in Raleigh or at the DBAP, I would be a lot more concerned. In this kind of ballpark (mausoleum?), defense will be as important as pitching. On the basepaths, both the runners and the coaches need to keep their heads out of their backsides. We cannot afford any wasted opportunities.

90% of the game is played above the shoulders; if we’d been smarter against UCLA we’d have won. They’re a good team, but we’re better. UNC is a very good baseball team too, but again, we’re better – WE just need to go out and prove it (their pitching can be and has been demolished at times this year). I want the opportunity to prove ourselves against UCLA next.
We’ve just got to take care of business and bring the whole package ONE GAME AT A TIME.
    Do it ‘PACK.

    My blueprint would be:
    (Try) 3 innings of Stone
    Then 3 innings of Thomas
Capped by 3 innings of Sasser.

Bring in a RH between this three to face one or two RH batters. At the DBAP Thomas and Sasser combined for 6 1/3 innings, no runs allowed, 7 K’s, 4 hits and two BB’s. If Stone can hold the ship down through the order once than I would go this route.

Also of note-why not try Jake in the three hole and Brett in the two. Jake is only going to see good pitches IF Turner is on with a free base ahead. He would see consistently more good pitches batting in front of Senay.

^vtpack, i’ve thought Fincher should hit in the 3 hole since early in the year, long before Austin’s average started plumeting. I’d rather have Adametz and his higher OBS and avg, and better bat control imo in the 2 slot, bump Austin down, but it’s not happening this late in the year. Austin does bunt well for a catcher.

Good news today is that Austin gets flipped around to hit from the right side. From my point of view, his swing from that side looks much better. Don’t know the number offhand, but I’d guess his average is higher versus lefties. I’ve asked on here how long Austin has been a switch hitter and what’s his natural side, but nobody seems to know. he was very highly thought of coming out of high school, but that’s mainly because he’s a switch hitting catcher. He’s caught a lot of innings, so I’m sure that may have taken it’s toll, but the bat just hasn’t been there for some time. But I’m predicting a couple of gap shots today.
