“Morning After” Webrun

Not doing my own write up on this one.  No, not because we lost.  I’m not a sore loser.  Well, mostly.  Just have a busy day today and tomorrow so I’ll leave it to the guys who actually get paid for it.

But of course we did lose.  Now we move on.

Thursday, 8pm, ESPN.  Pack vs Heels for the 5th time this year.  So far each team has taken 2 apiece so maybe it’s appropriate.

Loser goes home, winner must beat UCLA twice to make the championship series.

Tonight at 8pm on ESPN, Oregon State and Indiana go at it for the right to have to beat Mississippi State twice in the other bracket.

NC State falls to UCLA 2-1, will meet UNC again at CWS (CharlotteObserver.com)

Pitching and defense carried the Bruins (46-17) to this point, and it carried them again on Tuesday night. They threw out a runner at home in the third inning, and then left fielder Christoph Bono, who entered the game as a defensive replacement, preserved UCLA’s lead with an over-the-shoulder catch in left field in the eighth inning.

Bono’s catch effectively ended the Wolfpack’s final scoring chance. Leadoff batter Trea Turner came to the plate with runners on first and second with one out, and he drove Dave Berg’s pitch to deep left. But Bono caught it on the run, near the warning track.

Off the bat, it appeared Turner might have hit the pitch well enough to send it over the fence for a go-ahead three-run home run.

“I was dumb enough to (think it was out),” Turner said. “That’s about as good as I can hit a ball right. And unfortunately it fell a few feet short and that could have been the difference in the game.”

Berg, one of the best closers in the country, then struck out Jake Fincher to end the inning and leave the two runners stranded. Berg, who entered the game with a 0.87 ERA in 47 appearances this season, earned his 23rd save of the season. That ties an NCAA single-season record.

I don’t get it. I’d start Rodon, no question.

Not starting him, I hope Avent is ready with a quicker hook than last night.

  3. TheCOWDOG 06/19/2013 at 8:15 PM #

We don’t know …and I don’t care to know why.

    Just backing Stone and committee.

Avent’s chosen and I’ll have faith in grinding one out.

  4. TheCOWDOG 06/19/2013 at 8:27 PM #

So…Fox goes with who I expected. ( See ACC tourney. )

Through the lineups, biggest balls win.

  5. Pack78 06/19/2013 at 8:36 PM #

According to Mike Patrick, doing the IU-OSU game tonight, the State and u*nx campuses are ’10 miles apart’…does this guy do ANY preparation?

  6. Wufpacker 06/19/2013 at 9:10 PM #

    OSU/IU scoreless after 3.

  7. Wolfacct 06/19/2013 at 9:20 PM #

Patrick is clueless. I believe he called Avent “North Carolina’s” coach last night.

Avent left Jernigan in the game too long last night. His pitch count was high … should have got the hook with the first walk. That’s on Avent.

Finally, Stone will handle the “holes tomorrow night. Count on it. Saving Rodon for UCLA makes sense.

  8. Wufpacker 06/19/2013 at 9:45 PM #

Beavers on top (snicker) 1-0 after 5.

  9. nuclearwolf07 06/19/2013 at 9:51 PM #

Avent doesn’t want to be the guy who cooks the goose that lays the golden eggs. Would you rather eat for a day, or a season (or more)?

  10. Wufpacker 06/19/2013 at 10:09 PM #

Still 1-0 Oregon State headed to the stretch.

  11. h2othf 06/19/2013 at 10:34 PM #

These announcers are pitiful. Patrick’s partner in crime just called Rodon…..”Rondon” .

This is ESPN during a relatively slow period as far as sports are concerned, you’d think they could find 2 competent individuals to fill those seats.

  12. Wufpacker 06/19/2013 at 10:44 PM #

Headed to the bottom of the 9th, still 1-0 Beavers.

My dark horse Hoosiers need at least a run or it’s back to “B-Town” for them.

  13. Wufpacker 06/19/2013 at 10:54 PM #

Oregon State survives 1-0, will face Mississippi State and must beat them twice.

  14. JohnGalt78 06/19/2013 at 11:03 PM #

Yes, Stone starts. But Avent (or, as Patrick calls him, Advent) brings in Rodon if Stone struggles early. Must survive to advance. No tomorrow.

  15. Tau837 06/20/2013 at 9:39 AM #

^I don’t really understand that thinking. If you are going to use a quick hook to replace Stone with Rodon, IMO it would be better to just start Rodon, then have Stone ready for UCLA.

As you say, there is no tomorrow.

And Cowdog, this doesn’t mean I don’t “back” Stone.

  16. BJD95 06/20/2013 at 9:43 AM #

IMHO, if you don’t start Rodon…you don’t pitch him at all. That becomes a double disruption (short rest plus relief role), plus then he can’t start Friday.

I trust Avent on this, in both short and long-term thinking. He has the pulse of this team, and I think 90% of the criticism he gets is completely unfair.

  17. 6-4Sequoia 06/20/2013 at 10:05 AM #

I agree with BJD95 completely. Rodon shouldn’t play at all if he doesn’t get the start.

I also agree about believing that Avent knows what he is doing. He’s the one who is with these guys every day and can pick up on “the vibe” of each of them.

This is where he earns his keep…by going with his gut and what feels right.

Much like in politics (or at least how it should be), I have to default to the fact that these guys have more inside information than me and I have to trust that they are better enabled to make the right decision given a certain circumstance than I am being on the outside of the situation.

  18. TheCOWDOG 06/20/2013 at 10:15 AM #

Right again Beej. Now, since the dye is cast, you don’t throw Rodon.

We will watch State in the biggest baseball game of its history, with its biggest pitcher in college history, sporting a rally cap.

Avent deserves 10% of the accolades given.

It’s all about the. boys. I trust them, and I got their back.

  19. old13 06/20/2013 at 10:20 AM #

Stone’s season numbers are not very impressive. BUT, considering that he is a freshman, and has had some good outings recently, I have to think (hope?) that he has developed a lot during the season. If he can go for about five good innings, and then turn it over to the bullpen, I like our chances. Of course, an early 4+-run Pack lead wouldn’t hurt either!

  20. Whiteshoes67 06/20/2013 at 10:33 AM #

I won’t criticize Avent for this one whatever the outcome. Your thinking changes once you get tossed into the loser’s bracket. Stone is fresh and a lefty with some quality late season outings. Against that lefty laden lineup, if he keeps the ball down and throws strikes, he’ll be fine in that park. Big chore for a Freshman, though.

Boys will need to put up some runs, but I think we’ll get to Johnson tonight. I’d be surprised if he has the kind of outing he had against us in the ACC tourney and versus FAU. First team to 5 wins.

  21. Whiteshoes67 06/20/2013 at 10:36 AM #

And for the record, I think game management will be important in this one. Fox has managed that bunch worse than Avent during the postseason. Here’s hoping he can sucks again tonight.

  22. DC_wolf 06/20/2013 at 10:49 AM #

Pack78: “According to Mike Patrick, doing the IU-OSU game tonight, the State and u*nx campuses are ’10 miles apart’…does this guy do ANY preparation?” Wow, that is truly scary.. I remember Patrick doing ACC football games on Saturday’s for YEARS. I can still hear his “Holy COW”.

I like the Stone decision, but don’t be surprised if we see a lot of bullpen as well. Let’s go all in, boys! (sliding chips forward)

  23. Whiteshoes67 06/20/2013 at 10:52 AM #

If Stone can get you through that lineup twice, you’re golden.

  24. packalum44 06/20/2013 at 11:26 AM #

UNC’s starting pitcher is much better than Stone and their offense bats 306 compared to our 280. They are better defensively.

Add NC State S**t to top it off, I’d give us a 10% chance to win.

  25. Pack Leader 06/20/2013 at 11:48 AM #

I dont get throwing Stone. Yes he has had better outings lately, but you have a top arm sitting the bench in an elimination game. THERE IS NO TOMORROW.

And plus, UCLA isnt really known for lighting up ANY starter, so why save your best pitcher for A BAD HITTING TEAM. UNX, for as much as I hate them, have much more firepower behind the plate.

If Jernigan could go 5innings of 2hit ball against the Bruins, so could Stone or Ogborn. I dont get it.
