“Morning After” Webrun

Not doing my own write up on this one.  No, not because we lost.  I’m not a sore loser.  Well, mostly.  Just have a busy day today and tomorrow so I’ll leave it to the guys who actually get paid for it.

But of course we did lose.  Now we move on.

Thursday, 8pm, ESPN.  Pack vs Heels for the 5th time this year.  So far each team has taken 2 apiece so maybe it’s appropriate.

Loser goes home, winner must beat UCLA twice to make the championship series.

Tonight at 8pm on ESPN, Oregon State and Indiana go at it for the right to have to beat Mississippi State twice in the other bracket.

NC State falls to UCLA 2-1, will meet UNC again at CWS (CharlotteObserver.com)

Pitching and defense carried the Bruins (46-17) to this point, and it carried them again on Tuesday night. They threw out a runner at home in the third inning, and then left fielder Christoph Bono, who entered the game as a defensive replacement, preserved UCLA’s lead with an over-the-shoulder catch in left field in the eighth inning.

Bono’s catch effectively ended the Wolfpack’s final scoring chance. Leadoff batter Trea Turner came to the plate with runners on first and second with one out, and he drove Dave Berg’s pitch to deep left. But Bono caught it on the run, near the warning track.

Off the bat, it appeared Turner might have hit the pitch well enough to send it over the fence for a go-ahead three-run home run.

“I was dumb enough to (think it was out),” Turner said. “That’s about as good as I can hit a ball right. And unfortunately it fell a few feet short and that could have been the difference in the game.”

Berg, one of the best closers in the country, then struck out Jake Fincher to end the inning and leave the two runners stranded. Berg, who entered the game with a 0.87 ERA in 47 appearances this season, earned his 23rd save of the season. That ties an NCAA single-season record.

I would pitch Ogburn Thurday and Rodon Friday.

  2. TheCOWDOG 06/19/2013 at 12:33 PM #

Yes, Beej. Game 2. The only time one doesn’t go with your ace in a 2/3 championship, is when it is neither prudent, nor necessary.

And when they extend this thing, both conditions will have been met.

It was very tough that Turner’s ball didn’t clear the fence. Talk about someone stepping up in the moment. But I think there have only been 2 HRs total in the 8 games so far in Omaha… I agree with prior comments regarding the popped up bunt – The worst thing about Turner’s ball being caught was that noone was on 3rd base to tag.

I don’t see the big question as being who’ll pitch tomorrow night. I see the big question as being who’ll HIT tomorrow night.

I think this season may turn out to be Exhibit A of why it’s so hard being a Wolfpack fan. We think we’ve finally exorcised Carolina but in reality we’re about to be dumped hard by the Heels again.

When Turner’s ball fell short of the fence, I felt it was just more than “game over”. I believe it was an omen for yet another season falling short.

I know the ESPN gods loved matching us against UNC in the opener, but if they’re so determined to keep any conference from dominating, then why were the 2 SEC teams put in opposite brackets while the 2 ACC teams were put in the same bracket?

I’m pulling hard for us tomorrow night, but I just don’t have a good feeling about this one. Our team ran into a team last night that knows how to manufacture runs, something we don’t know how to do. When you’re down 2-1 late and make the UCLA pitcher throw only 4 pitches (in the 7th, I think) in the inning, you’re in trouble.

  5. theghost 06/19/2013 at 1:12 PM #

^Yeah, the bunt was a screw-up, but that’s execution – he’s trying not to pop it up, and that sidewinder stuff can’t be all that easy to bunt. I’m more disappointed by the baserunning, because that’s just not paying attention. Standing on the bag when a ball’s in the air, you may as well just sit down on it.

Thanks, CowDog, that’s high praise from the likes of Mr. Dog.

  6. TheCOWDOG 06/19/2013 at 1:15 PM #

Someone explain national seeding to him. I ain’t got the patience for drivel anymore.

  7. theghost 06/19/2013 at 1:17 PM #

I got you, ‘Dog. I owe you one.

13, it’s a 64-team tournament, the brackets and seedings are set from the beginning. If Va and SC had won, would’ve been the other way around.

  8. PackerInRussia 06/19/2013 at 1:24 PM #

Agree, maverick about the little things. Woulda been a Disney-movie type ending (OK, not quite an ending in the 8th) if Turner’s ball had sailed just a few more feet. But, it would have been nice baseball to see the previous bunt get the runner over in order to tag on a fly ball. Of course if they had tied it up, they may still be playing. C’est la baseball.
If I’m looking at needing to win 3 games in a row and one of them being against the old nemesis, I’d go all in to try to win that one. The possibility of being sent home by UCLA doesn’t hurt as bad as being sent home by The Blue-Powdered Ones.

  9. nav 06/19/2013 at 1:40 PM #

You jest PIR, but you have to think that if we did tie the game in the 8th then who the hell knows when the game would have finished with the way both teams were hitting.

  10. CaptainCraptacular 06/19/2013 at 3:45 PM #

I gather that should Rodon pitch Thursday, the holes will simply take until 2 strikes, then attempt to foul off as many as possible to get the pitch count up quickly.

I see Rodon hitting 110 pitches and running out of gas in this scenario around the 7th on the 3-day rest. Sure hope we have built a 4 run cushion by then.

  11. tjfoose1 06/19/2013 at 3:47 PM #

Not saying I know what is best, but I don’t see Avent sending out Rodon with only 3 days rest.

I’m late to this thread, busy day at work. Did anyone see the sign the third base coach gave to Armstrong? It looked to me like he held up but the call should have been “take the turn and look”.

  13. Gowolves 06/19/2013 at 4:11 PM #

See I think you are wrong on the over throw. If you look at the tape the left fielder is charging hard in. How do we not know he doesn’t rip one to third when he rounds the bag? Just like similar plays at first on singles to right field. I have seen done on both corners. He had to run to the bag instead of through. Now from there to run or stay I don’t know who made that decision. That is why he slowed up. He should have stayed and he didn’t.

  14. Whiteshoes67 06/19/2013 at 4:41 PM #

^4in12 & Gowolves, Armstrong initially didn’t run on contact from 2nd because he had to make sure the ball got through the left side. This is the good base running. For that reason, he had no chance to score on a throw that hit the cutoff or one to the plate. Looks like he was told to put on the breaks at 3rd. Why ran home on seeing the overthrow, I have no idea. Another poster on here said Adametz, who scored from 3rd, was waving him home on the overthrow. Either way, it was a terrible decision.

  15. Gowolves 06/19/2013 at 4:47 PM #

You are right about making sure the ball makes it through. What I’m referring to is some are saying why didn’t he round the bag a good distance or “why was he flat footed. My reasoning is once he made it to third he couldn’t afford a wide turn. Stay close just in case the right fielder throws behind you.

  16. Whiteshoes67 06/19/2013 at 4:47 PM #

Will we see Moss or Johnson tomorrow? I’m guessing the Holes throw the righty. The book on beating us is throw a righty, don’t give us free passes, and never throw Senay a fastball if you don’t have to. And pray you don’t have to face Rodon.

  17. Whiteshoes67 06/19/2013 at 4:50 PM #

^Yep, he should’ve been told to sit on the bag in that situation and stay. It was clear that throw was going to be errant the moment it left his hand, but he still doesn’t score there unless the ball caroms up the line.

  18. 4in12 06/19/2013 at 5:08 PM #

Whiteshoes, I hear what you’re saying. I just wish I could see video of the whole thing so I could understand the timing of the play. So much was going on during those few seconds and the camera man zoomed in on the outfielder so a lot was missed.

  19. theghost 06/19/2013 at 5:50 PM #

Gowolves, if you find the video, you’ll see the ball 40′ in the air passing 3rd, and Armstrong standing on the bag and staring at the plate. He shouldn’t have been sent before the throw, but he wasn’t looking at the throw. He doesn’t flinch until the ball hits the backstop. I’m not asking him to round 3rd with a head of steam, I’m asking him to be 3 steps off the bag and looking at the action, instead of standing there like the play is over. I don’t know what sign he was given, but I’m pretty sure there’s not a sign for “stand there and quit paying attention.”

But it’s got to be on the coach too – I’ve never been a 3rd base coach, but it seems like somewhere in the job description would be coaching the runner on 3rd base. If I could tell where I sit, some 4 states away, that the throw was off by 30′, he ought to be able to pick up on that little nuance and point it out to his charge.

  20. Gowolves 06/19/2013 at 6:04 PM #

In the end we agree he should not have been sent home. Even if takes three steps around the bag like you said there is no way he can make it home. That’s even if he is watching the play. The ball didn’t take a frutitous bounce.

Ya gotta know what your talkin’ ’bout.

What you don’t see is Hall ( 3rd base coach ) not down the line, where he should be.

What you don’t see is the early breaks sign he throws to Armstrong, while even with 3rd.

What you don’t see is Armstrong pulling up 10′ before the bag and pretty much walking in.

What you don’t see is both Armstrong and Hall even giving a glance to the leftfielder…called picking up the ball.

What you do see is early commital to throw thru to the cutoff man, at the very least.

What you do see is not a single Bruin covering the bag.

What you do see is the 3rd baseman where he’s supposed to be in that situation, everyday of the week.

Botched because the 2 of them broke some rules before the ball even left the outfield.

    Sorry you needed the video.
