UNC-CHeat football assistant shows ‘Carolina Way’ in Sidney Lowe tweet

It is great to see that the Carolina Way is not dead!!

You’ve got to see this. And, you’ve got to let every high school coach and top recruit in the state see this — because it can only serve to show the coaches and parents of impressionable young men what kind of great ‘leadership’ and ‘development’ to which they will subjective themselves if they choose to go to school and play football in Chapel Hill. (Oh, you read that correctly — students evidently really will have to ATTEND school in Chapel Hill to play football in the future.)

Shortly after the news broke today that former NC State player and head basketball coach Sidney Lowe had been arrested on tax related charges, an employee of the State of North Carolina used a device and an internet service surely provided to him by the taxpayers of North Carolina to issue this little gem of a tweet that takes an obvious shot at Coach Lowe’s misfortune:

Look, I love the State-Carolina rivalry; and, I can’t help but love how the RedBull Redneck and his staff continue to elevate NC State in the way they do things over there. I also love for fans to really go at each other just like we do here on SFN. But, none of us are supposed to be leaders of men. None of us are in positions where it is our responsibility to lead by example and develop the character of young men as college coaches like Gunter Brewer.

The gall that it takes to be a Tar heel is truly something that most rational humans could not remotely understand. It doesn’t even strike old Gunter as remotely sensitive that he currently is employed on staff of a University – and specifically a football program – that is in the middle of the ‘worst academic fraud in the history of college athletics’.

As an NC State fan, I would like to thank all current and former NC State coaches for not embarrassing our community by showing a lack of class when UNC women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance was being sued for sexual harassment by his former players; or when UNC’s old wrestling coach was arrested for a DUI; or when strange things were afoot on a team coached by Ford and played for by McInnis; or when (I think you get the picture).

Ahhh how glorious it must be to be a Tar heel and live in a glass house?

I am including a picture of the tweet below just in case it mysteriously disappears.

For as much as they claim to be better than us, they sure do spend a lot of time thinking about us.

Don’t forget to use your 216 phone when calling (texting) recruits during no contact period or when doing any other business for that matter.

Don’t forget to offer fake classes to all students, not just athletes, so it becomes an academic issue, not an athletic issue.

Perfectly reasonable tweet if from a dumbass Cheat student*, dumbass Cheat online alum, dumbass WalMart shoplifter, or just your basic dumbass….whatever. BUT, a “freakin” COACH???? WOW! A COACH people! On the freakin payroll over there! Holy cow! Think about one of our guys doing that. Unimaginable.

  9. smile102 02/18/2013 at 5:42 PM #

It appears Lowe messed up. Diversion posts like this one are just immature. This will pass in a few days; man up.

“And, you’ve got to let every high school coach and top recruit in the state see this”

Yes, tell them a NCSU coach is a tax evading crook, and a UNC coach made fun of him!

I believe you need to rethink this…

  11. jerkman88 02/18/2013 at 7:06 PM #

Maybe he was trying to remind Dean Smith.

  12. ADVENTUROO 02/18/2013 at 7:37 PM #

    Smile102,

I sort of agree with your concerns about elevating this. BUT, I do disagree with your synopsis.

Failure to file is a Misdemeanor, not a FELONY. Tax Evading is a FELONY (see Jesse Jackson, Jr…plea bargain).

Actually Coach Lowe is in the same category with a lot of folks that might get caught up in some stressful situations. He was arrested for NOT FILING…which is NOT evasion. He still has the opportunity to file the appropriate forms.

Usually the Feds take the lead in this. Once you get 3 years behind, they come at you tooth and nail. So, on April 15, 2013, if you have NOT filed your 2009 return, then the Feds will be knocking. They prefer to let the penalities and interest run up, THEN hit your.

I can NOT, as I doubt many posters can, say WHY the State took the lead in this.

I WILL point out that unless Coach Lowe filed (the form escapes me) a request or UNDERWITHOLDING (which I did many times as I had investment losses – from time to time – and my mortgage interest was a bit higher)….therefore, the tax witholding tables are biased in the “house’s” favor. I would dutifully (my wife then took over) file our returns and the net would be ZERO tax liability. This was far more financially beneficial that getting that WOW…Look at my BIG REFUND check. Interest free to the Fed and/or State is NOT my calling.

    So, please rethink your terms.

I am NOT understating the seriousness of the charges. I do KNOW that during this period of time, Coach Lowe was involved in some really stressful and personal maters that would, most likely, have also impacted his financial condition.

We will have to see how this plays out. If he makes ammends and files his returns, I do NOT know what the court will do…

The UNC tweet, was stupid….and it is obvious that the coaches need to read the Social Media protocols that they blandly hand out to the players. The Tweet HAS been removed.

  13. Wulfpack 02/18/2013 at 7:40 PM #

He willfully failed to file for the last three years he was the coach at State. I am failing to see how that isn’t very serious. Again, the charge is “willfully”. That means they likely have evidence he didn’t do a thing to remedy the situation. Dumb.

  14. oceanman 02/18/2013 at 7:41 PM #

    You can’t fix stupid!!!!!!!!

  15. mak4dpak 02/18/2013 at 7:49 PM #

Guess ole Sid has lost a few more members from his loyal fan club, that misses him as coach at State.

  16. LifeLongWolf 02/18/2013 at 8:09 PM #

Smile102 is exactly right. The worst thing about this tweet is SFN’s juvenile overreaction to it. I see nothing innappropriate about the tweet. For Pete’s sake, man, grow a pair. One of ours got in the news in a negative way. The Holes are gonna crow about it. Either ignore ’em or throw something else right back at ’em (like some of the above posts about classes, exams, and 216 phone records). The righteous indignation thing is ok when there is cause, but this ain’t one of those times.

  17. mak4dpak 02/18/2013 at 8:35 PM #

I will say the source of the article, a UNX tarhole coach, does make a difference, in the fact that, as previously mentioned, with all the BS at the UNC cheaters, none of our coaches have stooped to their level. But fans are another story, we can make comments, good or bad.

  18. GAWolf 02/18/2013 at 8:51 PM #

Cut the yokel some slack, guys. He majored in “science” while in college and later got a masters in “exercise.”

Today that would be “swahili” and “african american studies.”

I don’t think anyone is going to confuse the man for being a scholar. One might mistake him for an adult perhaps, but not necessarily a bright one.

  19. wufpup76 02/18/2013 at 9:01 PM #

StateFans has a point, but I have to agree with smile for the most part here.

Still, a coach? Not a good look.

  20. Alpha Wolf 02/18/2013 at 9:28 PM #

Thing is, what does this have to do with our hoops team, or NC State, NOW?

  21. 61Packer 02/18/2013 at 10:42 PM #

The two things that bother me most about this is that it involves 3 years of failing to file, plus Lowe was being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars annually during this time by the State of North Carolina. And this was state money that he didn’t even have to work for!

You won’t convince me that he was simply caught up in a stressful situation. If he was smart enough to land the NC State head basketball job and keep it for 5 years, he was (or should have been) smart enough to understand that he was responsible for managing his finances, which includes reporting his income EVERY year.

Today’s front-page story in the News & Observer heaped praise on their departing golden boy, Holden Thorp, whose UNC athletics legacy continues to be carried on, this time by Brewer’s dimwitted tweet.

Tomorrow’s N&O will certainly not be as gracious to the NC State guy as it was today to the UNC guy.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

  22. fullmoon1 02/18/2013 at 11:00 PM #

I would expect such foolishness from maybe a fan, a careless athlete but for a coach to stoop as low as this ass hat is beyond classless. Beating the holes on a Saturday would be a nice start.

  23. Pack Mentality 02/18/2013 at 11:25 PM #

This has NOTHING to do with NC State. A FORMER coach was arrested. That coach was also the worst coach in the history of the school. I would not consider this reason to trash talk even to a Carolina fan if this happened to a former coach of theirs who was one of the worst coaches of all time.

It’s not like we are worried about his legacy being tarnished. Maybe those last place finishes can now have an asterisk and the footnote say that the coach also didn’t pay taxes?

  24. Wolfman 9806 02/18/2013 at 11:53 PM #

    I think it’s pretty funny!

Sid is a big and has yo pay his taxes just like the rest of us. Stuff like this adds to the rivalry. I don’t think that we should overreact here.

Pretty rich coming from the son of one of the cheating-est coaches to ever grace the SEC. Other SEC schools consider Ole Miss during the Billy Brewer era to be “dirty” and that is saying something. Well, little Gunther should feel right at home over in Chapel Hill. That family has a seeming knack of ending up at schools that cheat like hell and still suck.
