Hoos in Hooville LiveBlog

Because we need extra good mojo due to Calvin’s sickness. And because we’ve already lost a “should win” game (Wake), and we need to win a “should lose” (tonight, NITish opponent that presents matchup problems on the road) to restore balance and harmony in the universe.

Join me, won’t you? Perhaps it will even be fun. Perhaps not. But then gallows humor will abound. So it will still be kind of fun. Unless you don’t enjoy my gallows humor, in which case…f–k you! (:

7:03 – Wood with the friendly bounce from 27. Good omen?

7:04 – Bodies on the floor. Probable omen.

7:07 – Warren VERY active early. Gonna need that.

7:09 – As badly as they shoot, you would expect UVA to pound the boards. But they dash back on defense. That’s…unorthodox. I guess the plan is to frustrate us to death. Which is actually a reasonable idea.

7:13 – Here comes “flu of death” Calvin. Let’s see what develops.

7:15 – That was some suffocating defense, for sure. Woo is really out of sorts early.

7:20 – Zo limping. Last thing in the world we could use. This is like a heavyweight boxing match (not as critique of refs, it’s just gonna be physical tonight).

7:22 – Wee Baby Seamus! For three!!

7:23 – Cavs overpursue WBS on the dribble, and Calvin gets open for a short one. 17-7, TB TO.

7:25 – 4-0 run and momentum turning a little. Really not much action to liveblog about.

7:29 – Calvin in a mental funk – I was the same way last week when at my sickest.

7:30 – Ladies and gentlemen…we ain’t gonna win this game. UVA has adjusted and trying to offensive rebound now.

7:34 – Flu of Death Calvin runs the fast break very nicely. Didn’t expect that.

7:37 – Too much BJD fatalism too soon. And 1 for Calvin, lead up to 8 (because the 1 bricked).

7:39 – I bet they gave Calvin some Tussionex and now he believes he’s invincible. Good job, whoever on the bench was holding some.

7:41 – Super Calvin strikes again!!

Halftime – NC State 31, UVA 24. The Talibeard…it is sweaty.

8:06 – No Zo, and the on-court early second half news is equally grimm. Ugh.

8:14 – Bad times ahead, kids. I do suggest giving WBS some minutes at the two.

8:16 – Bad, bad times.

8:17 – And then out of nowhere…Super Calvin.

8:26 – Nothing has happened for like ten minutes.

8:28 – It’s basically 1-on-5 right now.

8:29 – Then we get Woo and Talibeard sightings.

8:32 – Please sit down, Zo. If we pull this off without him, call the Vatican to declare a miracle.

8:34 – More inconsistent whistle. Happening both ways. Irritating.

8:35 – Missed layup and another endline violation. Daggers.

8:36 – I kinda want to stop watching. This is brutal.

8:38 – Woo keeps us temporarily alive.

8:40 – Criticised for losing a game when we are an underdog whose PG and best player left after 5 minutes? Really??

8:42 – I remember listening to a game on the radio when I was young. We lost at the buzzer after the refs called 10 seconds on the FREE THROW LINE for a turnover, followed by game winning layup. That place (building non-specific) is a house of horrors.

8:45 – Is Warren some kind of attitude problem?

8:47 – Warren needs to come out of the game now. Seriously. WBS time, IMHO. Can’t believe we are still in it. And…the score is where WE want it too. Can’t run and gun sans Zo. Duh.

8:50 – We haven’t taken a good shot in for-f-cking-ever.

8:51 – Jesus, that was 5 seconds.

8:52 – 30% foul shooter his both. House of horrors, I say. Need to get quick two before the next catastrophe.

8:54 – Calvin is exhausted and we are panicking. I set up WBS for the shot. Seriously.

Final Score – UVA 58, State 55. An airball to end it. Hey, if you got your money in late we covered!!

Has wood ever pump faked ever in his career here at state?

  3. WeAreCured 01/29/2013 at 8:26 PM #

Wood has to stop, let that dude elevate, then jump into him. What a dope.

  4. Rick 01/29/2013 at 8:26 PM #

Woo was fouled and of course no call.

    I hate the ACC

UVA is the equivalent of pond scum. Dirty dirty baskteball.

Thank the good Lord Bennet is not our coach. He will be gone in a few years when no decent recruit will want to play that excruciating basketball.

  5. Alpha Wolf 01/29/2013 at 8:27 PM #

Well, that’s that. State is turning into an NCAA bubble team before our very eyes.

Get ready for Thursday ACCT action with the season on the line.

  6. TheAliasTroll 01/29/2013 at 8:28 PM #

I’m not sure why we kept going to exclusively CJ Leslie who had almost 10 turnovers by himself.

Winning the ACC will be tough now, our main concern going forward is getting Brown back 100% healthy and to have this TJ Warren bullsh!t squashed sooner rather than later.

  7. lush 01/29/2013 at 8:29 PM #

Laughable call on purvis. Laughable no over the back call where the ref blew his whistle and then said it was out of bounds. Laughable that gott refuses to call out the refs on any of their bullsh I t.

Thank you Jay williams “how badly an officiated game was that? How many times does Leslie need to be pushed out of bounds”.

  8. MrPlywood 01/29/2013 at 8:31 PM #

Yeah, Woo should have definitely jumped right into the dude. Forget trying to make it, just get to the line.

  9. packalum44 01/29/2013 at 8:38 PM #

How many times were we called for dribbling out of bounds on the baseline tonight? I count 3-4. Preventable turnovers. Boneheaded plays.

Leslie was awful tonight. He had 7 or more turnovers. Jesus Christ we just can’t win close games. Always find a different way to implode.

With all of the ads on this site, can we not afford to eliminate crashes when 10-15 people are posting?

    Stark. Raving. Mad… Again.
At this point, we can’t win unless we’re at home or the team we’re visiting is bloody awful. I don’t care how close they were, losses are losses. No good.

  12. packalum44 01/29/2013 at 8:44 PM #

    We beat the spread. #WPN

  13. wufpup76 01/29/2013 at 8:44 PM #

He is calling them out (somewhat) in the postgame. Has repeatedly said “a whole lot of contact” in the interview.

We should’ve won this game, and it had nothing to do with *our* inconsistency. That was pretty awful.

Blatant flops, Leslie just ridden out of bounds twice, sumo-wrestling down low … When are going to get the better of the gamesmanship? Because that’s what ACC refs go for. Not what is actual, but what appears to be (or in other words, the Chapel Hill mantra).

And Warren may need an attitude check.

  14. ILPackfan 01/29/2013 at 8:48 PM #

I don’t normally complain about the refs, but it looked like hand-to-hand combat under our basket with no call, and then we get touch fouls under their basket. Really?

  15. Smasher 01/29/2013 at 8:49 PM #

We’ll be a better team when CJ is gone. There, I said it.

  16. graywolf 01/29/2013 at 8:50 PM #

We win this one with Brown but cannot pull it out without him…..hope he is better by the weekend.

  17. WeAreCured 01/29/2013 at 8:51 PM #

I just hope Zo is alright. Without him at close to full speed, we are in deep, deep doo doo.

I don’t know about bubble team, but 11-7 in the ACC and a 9 or 10 seed are definitely on the horizon. I can see them going as low as 10-8 and a 12 seed. Either way, a Sweet 16 run will be their peak.

Team chemistry has become an issue, if it wasn’t already. The entire team is starting to get that, “Woe is me. The whole world is against me, and there is nothing I can do about it,” look on their faces. I’ve got my eye on Warren. His lack of any sort of defense is excusable as long as he’s giving it all he’s got, but I saw him giving up after that exchange with Howell. He may not be around next year.

  18. hoop 01/29/2013 at 8:51 PM #

“We’ll be a better team when CJ is gone. There, I said it.”

I disagree very much. There were attitude problems tonight and among the players I saw with a problem was not CJ. If I missed something let me know.

It looked like TJ Warren was jawing quite a bit with Rich, then at the timeout Purvis was very unhappy about something. It *looked* like Purvis may have had a reason to be, but Warren didn’t seem to handle the bad calls well.

Hard to say without hearing what was going on but that is what I saw.

  19. MrPlywood 01/29/2013 at 8:53 PM #

    Two things regarding the announcers:

    1) I think the Warren/Howell “altercation” was complete mind-reading on their part. TJ looked frustrated, and I don’t think he was yapping AT RH but TO him, and the wave off was not directed at TJ. I think that was irresponsible to surmise what was going on there.

    2) The “State will get destroyed” comment… good lord, what BS. Lo went down early, Calvin was sick… State fans are better than that.

  20. mak4dpak 01/29/2013 at 8:53 PM #

Still could be undefeated in the ACC, but we just do not play smart when the game is on the line, regardless of the refs, when we are on the road. Now we will come home to the PNC and beat Miami. That is my prediction for Saturday. Just wish we could learn to play the same on the road.

  21. inhoc... 01/29/2013 at 8:53 PM #

What a bunch of f-ing b-shit. a truely good team would have found a way to win this game….like the Dukes and UNCs do. Still have work to do. Had a 10 point win, and didnt stretch it out. Shit [State} happens. Good teams dont leave the outcome in the hands of the refs, even though they helped the Hoos steal this one, just like UMD.

  22. WeAreCured 01/29/2013 at 8:54 PM #

I, and the box score, disagree Smasher.

  23. WeAreCured 01/29/2013 at 8:56 PM #

Mr.Plywood: RH definitely said, “Get out of my face,” as he waived Warren off.

  24. MrPlywood 01/29/2013 at 8:57 PM #

    ^Yeah? I didn’t see that. Crappy stream I guess. I stand corrected.

  25. DrWuffette1day 01/29/2013 at 9:03 PM #

    Calvin did ok.

We played well enough to win.

I really dislike Swofford/Cloughtery UNC-CHeat ACC refs. Nothing like having the game taken away from you. The only way that we win is by taking the other team out completely. In ACC play (ANY ACC play), that is most likely NOT going to happen. Most games are tight, thus we will be screwed.

Sorry. I’m not of the belief that refs don’t have an effect. They totally took Howell out of his game and also impacted the last 12 mins of the game.

I’m sick over this one (and truly not feeling well). Even without Calvin being on top, Howell playing in the daisies and Brown on the bench, we still played well enough to win.
