Because we need extra good mojo due to Calvin’s sickness. And because we’ve already lost a “should win” game (Wake), and we need to win a “should lose” (tonight, NITish opponent that presents matchup problems on the road) to restore balance and harmony in the universe.

Join me, won’t you? Perhaps it will even be fun. Perhaps not. But then gallows humor will abound. So it will still be kind of fun. Unless you don’t enjoy my gallows humor, in which case…f–k you! (:

7:03 – Wood with the friendly bounce from 27. Good omen?

7:04 – Bodies on the floor. Probable omen.

7:07 – Warren VERY active early. Gonna need that.

7:09 – As badly as they shoot, you would expect UVA to pound the boards. But they dash back on defense. That’s…unorthodox. I guess the plan is to frustrate us to death. Which is actually a reasonable idea.

7:13 – Here comes “flu of death” Calvin. Let’s see what develops.

7:15 – That was some suffocating defense, for sure. Woo is really out of sorts early.

7:20 – Zo limping. Last thing in the world we could use. This is like a heavyweight boxing match (not as critique of refs, it’s just gonna be physical tonight).

7:22 – Wee Baby Seamus! For three!!

7:23 – Cavs overpursue WBS on the dribble, and Calvin gets open for a short one. 17-7, TB TO.

7:25 – 4-0 run and momentum turning a little. Really not much action to liveblog about.

7:29 – Calvin in a mental funk – I was the same way last week when at my sickest.

7:30 – Ladies and gentlemen…we ain’t gonna win this game. UVA has adjusted and trying to offensive rebound now.

7:34 – Flu of Death Calvin runs the fast break very nicely. Didn’t expect that.

7:37 – Too much BJD fatalism too soon. And 1 for Calvin, lead up to 8 (because the 1 bricked).

7:39 – I bet they gave Calvin some Tussionex and now he believes he’s invincible. Good job, whoever on the bench was holding some.

7:41 – Super Calvin strikes again!!

Halftime – NC State 31, UVA 24. The Talibeard…it is sweaty.

8:06 – No Zo, and the on-court early second half news is equally grimm. Ugh.

8:14 – Bad times ahead, kids. I do suggest giving WBS some minutes at the two.

8:16 – Bad, bad times.

8:17 – And then out of nowhere…Super Calvin.

8:26 – Nothing has happened for like ten minutes.

8:28 – It’s basically 1-on-5 right now.

8:29 – Then we get Woo and Talibeard sightings.

8:32 – Please sit down, Zo. If we pull this off without him, call the Vatican to declare a miracle.

8:34 – More inconsistent whistle. Happening both ways. Irritating.

8:35 – Missed layup and another endline violation. Daggers.

8:36 – I kinda want to stop watching. This is brutal.

8:38 – Woo keeps us temporarily alive.

8:40 – Criticised for losing a game when we are an underdog whose PG and best player left after 5 minutes? Really??

8:42 – I remember listening to a game on the radio when I was young. We lost at the buzzer after the refs called 10 seconds on the FREE THROW LINE for a turnover, followed by game winning layup. That place (building non-specific) is a house of horrors.

8:45 – Is Warren some kind of attitude problem?

8:47 – Warren needs to come out of the game now. Seriously. WBS time, IMHO. Can’t believe we are still in it. And…the score is where WE want it too. Can’t run and gun sans Zo. Duh.

8:50 – We haven’t taken a good shot in for-f-cking-ever.

8:51 – Jesus, that was 5 seconds.

8:52 – 30% foul shooter his both. House of horrors, I say. Need to get quick two before the next catastrophe.

8:54 – Calvin is exhausted and we are panicking. I set up WBS for the shot. Seriously.

Final Score – UVA 58, State 55. An airball to end it. Hey, if you got your money in late we covered!!

This team is slowly making what should have been a great season into one mediocre one.

Dont know what to say, hoping the two freshman will grow up but without Brown we’re just a mediocre team. Think we may should have gone in zone at the end. Dont think we have much of a chance to win ACC but think we have a outstanding group of players and could be real good before end of season. Been a fan of state for 30 years and use to it

Better without Leslie? HAHAHAHAH man that was hilarious…. We’re a great team with ZO…… without not so much…. He’ll be alright though…. and so will the team…. I can still them playing in Atlanta…. Who expected us to be in the sweet 16 last year? And I don’t think anybody here can say that this loss hurt more than the Maryland game…. GO PACK!!!

Don’t know if you caught it even Jason Williams commented on the reffing….1st thing out of his mouth after the game. They also didn’t replay clear shots which would dispute calls.

In this day and age and with all the cameras, we should have gotten more confirmation. They really didn’t show good angles and they also sped up the tape. Gotta go listen for black helicopters.

Cured- agreed about Calvin. He did well even being out there considering his condition. Makes me like him even more. A little point guard who is no longer in his class did and would have bailed. Calvin does have character and he wants to win. That’s my player.

Lush- sorry for the repeat but maybe it’s such a good point it should be reiterated. He’s a Duke guy calling out the refs.

“I, and the box score, disagree Smasher.”

Wait, you mean…you mean to tell me when a guy tries to take on an entire team he we’ll manage to put up numbers that look good in a box score? The only box score numbers that mattered tonight were 58-55. When Leslie actually found his teammates after running into a wall of 3 people instead of jacking up the same crap he has been doing for a couple seasons now either someone else got a good look or it was enough to force UVAs D to reset and in the process gave Leslie a chance to get better body position on his defender. We kick the ball back to the top of the key so little on those plays that it’s maddening. I was yelling for it late and they actually did kick it out to Purvis for a clear look from 3 that would have put us up 2 had it gone down. The screen he set for Scott on the last play was garbage and reeks of a guy that simply doesn’t understand the total team concept of basketball. We’ll be better when the rest of the team doesn’t get lulled into watching him dance around like a moron waiting for him to jack up a brick.

    Wufpup76, good call on Jespersen.

After he got called on a hold and on the very next play, he was bearhugging Woo on the out-of-bounds play. RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REF.

    No call.

Smasher, good luck with that. 🙂 Leslie was our go-to-guy. He had to create his own shot. Nobody was helping him and he should have not been sending the ball back out to the point (to much risk of getting picked off and Purvis didn’t need the extra attention).

Howell wasn’t giving good lanes – position battles were ended with foul concerns – he knew he had to stay in the game- showed some maturity on his part. – he also got some critical rebounds. Woo was being held so tightly, he probably thought he was being made love to.

Purvis was not in his element. Somebody commented about trust from his other teammates. He was out of position (many times throughout the game – he’s used to that slot guard position). When was the last time a Center got called for touching the sideline while trying to dribble the ball to the top of the key. Purvis at point affected the whole team including Purvis. Overall, I thought he did a good-enough job. He did a pretty good job with the entry passes and setting up the plays.

Warren played well enough too. I am not upset by our play.

Though disappointed with the loss, I was please with how everyone hung in. I didn’t see any quit in them (disclaimer: I was pretty high up in the stands). Wish more of the bench would have seen some time on the floor. In the long run, I think this loss helps us more than any other. Since we were still in it at the end without out Brown and only 1/2 CJ. Make some of those point blank shots and we carry the day.

After a day to think about it I am still irate at the way the game was called. The ACC should not be encouraging that mugging style of play.

And when did they quit calling moving picks. It has gotten laughable how awful they are. They are actually rooting players out but no call.

A loosely called game is typically better for us but not when the other team is allowed to play like MMA fighters.

Both pics of the game in the CO paper show us getting fouled; Leslie is being grabbed/hacked on either side on a drive (foul called?) and the pic of Zo’s injury shows contact with a mention in the story that NO foul was called with the contact. ACC refs are terrible.
