Volmageddon – Why It’s So Emotionally Devastating

After a full night’s sleep…it doesn’t feel one bit better. Last night was an unmitigated disaster. The opportunity the game presented (to make a statement on the national stage) will not be repeated. Even if we win the ACC – admittedly a laughable notion right now – we will just be the new sacrificial lamb put up for January slaughter. A feeble reminder of why the college football world can’t wait to be rid of the BCS.

We can’t even judge what kind of team we really have. The massive suck from Glennon and Amerson means that we don’t really know anything about the other 20 guys. If the unquestioned offensive and defensive leaders get their heads straight…will the guys in the trenches become the fatal flaw? We can have no idea.

No matter what, NC State had a big opportunity, against a name program that we matched up well with – on paper. And we absolutely embarrassed ourselves. The final score could have been oh so much worse. The way the roster is set up, this was the perfect year to face such an opening night test. In short, we had the ideal setup, and we didn’t even come close to taking advantage. Plain and simple, that is extraordinarily disheartening. It will be a long damned time before most of us can generate any enthusiasm for our football program. Mild amusement and interest is all we have left.

For me, this is problematic at a macro level. I genuinely believe that our limitations as a team in a pedestrian conference, with a natural recruiting base that’s average and significantly overfished…the Dick Sheridan/Tom O’Brien model is the only way for us to succeed. And despite being even more accomplished than Sheridan…Tom O’Brien couldn’t replicate even that ceiling, let alone break through. It’s very likely that our next coach will be worse, or immediately leave for greener pastures. NC State is simply not a legitimate player in the college football world, and it will take lightning in a bottle for it ever to be, even on a limited, temporary basis.

Dooley was literally coaching for his CAREER. Had he lost this game, he gets canned perhaps immediately and he never coaches on a major stage again.

My guess is he pulled out all the stops, and that showed in the final score.

Thanks to the UT fans who are able to see what some of our fans miss. UT is strong, and we played them pretty well all things and big plays considered.

To squander an opportunity like this with all the style of a deer in the headlights hurts.

OTOH, here’s what the optimist in me says:
    – Schedule is set up perfect for TOB: all 4 non-conference opponents prior to opening the ACC the last week of September.
    – O-Line needs a little time to get settled into their new positions.
    – Our prime letdown games are at home (UVA following string of FSU, UMD, UND and BC following Clemson)
If our defense improves enough by the time we face Miami on 9/29, Clemson and FSU win a few more national games and I’m right about these other things, we could have a chance to both regain respect with a win over Clemson and/or FSU as well as contend for an ACC Championship berth.

oh boy, another TOB start of the season. i’m as disappointed as a PACK fan can be with a complete blown oppurtunity for our program. i’ve been waiting on friday’s game for a couple of years and it happened.

there is obviously more talent on tennesee’s team but that is not why we lost this game. TOB’s teams are never game ready early on in the season. i’ve seen flat out embarrassments on all levels from his teams each year he’s been here. BUT, by the end of the season it’s a different ball game. it seems that it takes much of the year for the team to be hitting on all cylinders. and still this leaves room for those painful late season losses ala maryland in russell’s final campaign.

we did lose this game in the trenches, the o and d lines got pushed around. the big plays killed us. what i expect to see the rest of the season is a much improved glennon and secondary. i also expect our d line to become fully functional and all together be a well rounded team.

at the end of the season i hope that TOB retires and we can get a young enthusiastic coach. this loss pretty much was it for me with TOB, like i says, i’ve been looking forward to this matchup for a long time and winning it would be the first step in what could have been a really special season. we still have alot of football to be played… but starting off the season with a sec win would catapult us into the top 25 or well on our way.

No one is saying fire the coach because of one bad game, people are saying fire the coach because of multiple lackluster seasons. I was extremely disappointed after watching the game. Even my 10 yr old son pointed out that the tn team looked a lot bigger and stronger. It looked especially bad in all the detail of high def.

Here’s an extremely good analysis that leaves some reason for hope, including that our D was facing an O-line which returned 4 starters who last year gave up only 18 sacks while playing a schedule that included LSU, ‘Bama and Arkansas from the SEC West:

We were beat at the line of scrimmage all night long on both sides of the ball. This is where games are won or lost. Glennon and Amerson were both very disappointing and I feel for them because I know they have worked hard. Long season a head but we certainly blew a golden opportunity.

After a few days of additional comments, I’ll weigh back in. TOB inherited a crappy situation. There is no doubt he has corrected a lot of the problems he inherited. The team is full of his guys and his kind of guys.

One of the undercurrents of this thread is the notion that the only way to recruit 4/5 star guys is to lower admissions standards and allow thugs into the program. I don’t think football talent and brains/character are mutually exclusive. I don’t deny that the pool of intelligent football players is smaller than the pool of all football players.

The lack of recruiting progress is the most troubling aspect of TOB’s tenure. During a period when we have beaten UNC-CH five consecutive times and their program has been under a cloud of scandal, he has consistently been whipped by them on the recruiting trail. This was clearly a window of opportunity to gain the upper hand in recruiting and upgrade our talent base. Eventually the team with the best talent will win more times than not. You can only “coach ’em up” so much.

To see a performance like we saw out of a team with four returning starters on the O-line, a QB the NFL was slobbering over, and a pre-season AA at CB was very discouraging. TOB will likely never be able to assemble a collection like that again given the steady decline in our recruiting, so you have to ask yourself if a CONFERENCE or even DIVISION championship is possible under his leadership. Every year we wait to replace him represents at least one more year until we can compete for a conference title. (I was there for our last conference title in 1979.)

The game sucked, but what an overblown, defeatist, pussified post to begin a thread! I’m fairly tired of TOB and feel he has just squarely set himself down on a pretty warm seat. That said, he has time to turn the season around and if he does, he very well could be on his way to very good things. If this year goes down the tubes he has lost me. But I’ll be damned if I will throw out any hope I have for this team or the long term program after a spanking by Tennessee, even if it is a weak Tennessee. 0 and 1 does not mean NC State football is doomed to suck forever…grow a pair.

Not sure what game you watched but we were DOMINATED. Especially in the 3rd and 4th quarter. We couldn’t get them off the field. I lost count on how many 3rd downs UT converted in a row but they kept just moving down field and we had nothing to say about it. Our line got little to no penetration and meanwhile our line got crushed.

Finally I have not liked Glennon since day one and as he kept on throwing int’s like last season he proved why. He reminds me of Rob Johnson. A prototype looking qb on paper………
