Volmageddon – Why It’s So Emotionally Devastating

After a full night’s sleep…it doesn’t feel one bit better. Last night was an unmitigated disaster. The opportunity the game presented (to make a statement on the national stage) will not be repeated. Even if we win the ACC – admittedly a laughable notion right now – we will just be the new sacrificial lamb put up for January slaughter. A feeble reminder of why the college football world can’t wait to be rid of the BCS.

We can’t even judge what kind of team we really have. The massive suck from Glennon and Amerson means that we don’t really know anything about the other 20 guys. If the unquestioned offensive and defensive leaders get their heads straight…will the guys in the trenches become the fatal flaw? We can have no idea.

No matter what, NC State had a big opportunity, against a name program that we matched up well with – on paper. And we absolutely embarrassed ourselves. The final score could have been oh so much worse. The way the roster is set up, this was the perfect year to face such an opening night test. In short, we had the ideal setup, and we didn’t even come close to taking advantage. Plain and simple, that is extraordinarily disheartening. It will be a long damned time before most of us can generate any enthusiasm for our football program. Mild amusement and interest is all we have left.

For me, this is problematic at a macro level. I genuinely believe that our limitations as a team in a pedestrian conference, with a natural recruiting base that’s average and significantly overfished…the Dick Sheridan/Tom O’Brien model is the only way for us to succeed. And despite being even more accomplished than Sheridan…Tom O’Brien couldn’t replicate even that ceiling, let alone break through. It’s very likely that our next coach will be worse, or immediately leave for greener pastures. NC State is simply not a legitimate player in the college football world, and it will take lightning in a bottle for it ever to be, even on a limited, temporary basis.

    Amen.

In a zone-based defense that relies on inside and edge pressure, you’re not going to win too many games when you have a stumpy legged, 4.9 forty guy starting at outside linebacker who was good enough to play 1 snap from scrimmage in three years. We are talking VMI-level talent at a key position.

Terrell Manning, Nate Irving, Pat Thomas, Levar Fisher….hell Sheldon Kee…ain’t walking through that door.

Prepare yourself for lots of toss sweeps and deep posts from the opposition.

Glad to see at least one person on this site watched the same game I did. UT’s primary back had 22 carries for 53 yards, #2 back had 2 carries for minus 2, third back had 9 carries for 75 yards. (he had the one long run in second half) The defense had a good game against the run. We were beat by a quarterback who converted third downs at the expense of our DB’s.

The negative for me was no pass rush!

As for the offense, we at times had positives in the running game. However we have no consistency with calls, formation, and momentum awareness.

Wait! Remember we dont have Uncle Jed anymore making hires.
So I see OBriens departure, whenever it may be, as the best opportunity to hire an
up and coming football coach since Lou Holtz.

So far Yow has done a good job on handling the coaching changes.

The funny thing is…I’m as big a Tom O’Brien fan as there is. He’s a very good coach who took a chance on NC State. If this fails (and if we don’t win the ACC this year, it will), I don’t have any idea how we can be nationally relevant. At least not as an ACC member.

  6. ryebread 09/02/2012 at 3:12 PM #

BJD: When we made this hire, I was very vocal about wanting Paul Johnson. For us to overcome the challenges that face this program (4 big schools recruiting from a thin talent pool, not the flagship, Adidas vs. Nike, players pushed to the flagship, small budget, small endowment, no real historical success, etc.), then we’re going to need a contrarian. Paul Johnson was that contrarian and he wanted to be at NC State. TOB was a mediocre coach who wasn’t going to have the built in advantage (2nd best Catholic school) that helped him recruit nationally and get kids.

Since then, I’ve only seen one other coach that I thought we had a shot with that would have been that contrarian. He was Mike Leech and Wazzou smartly snatched him up.

I don’t know where exactly we’re going from here, but I suspect it is to try and find a diamond in the rough amongst the small schools. Miami grabbed my favorite target of this mold in Golden. I don’t know who we’ll target, but I expect it will be someone from the MAC, Southern Conference, etc..

I also suspect that TOB is leaving on his own timeline. Now, TOB might be ready to hang it up after this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him around another 3 years. Until that time, we wait and just enjoy our 8-4 (+/- 1) seasons.

  7. BJD95 09/02/2012 at 4:10 PM #

Johnson has only been marginally more successful than TOB, and all that success is predicated on a gimmick system that gets them slaughtered come bowl time (ie, when anyone decent has time to prepare for it). He also makes more than double the salary. Pass.

Now Leach…I could have seen that.

  8. Wulfpack 09/02/2012 at 5:08 PM #

I agree that Johnson and TOB are comparable. However, there is one BIG difference — Paul Johnson has an ACC Championship. He also sports two Division 1 AA championships at Georgia Southern. You know who else have ACC Championships? Jim Grobe and Dabo Swinney. Let that sink in a minute. TOB is an excellent coach. But he is not about championships. That’s why I will not mind when he decides to move on whether it is this year or next.

I’m sorry – but anyone who can do a little bit of research/analytical thinking knew that the game vs. UT would be a tough one.

We’ll play 2-3 teams with as much talent as UT. And in order for us to beat a team like them, we’ll have to win the TO battle.

We didn’t – we lost it badly as a matter of fact. And guess what, if we are 1-3 in the Turnover margin every week, we’ll be 2-10. I think a lot of the reason we ended up that way was because UT played well…they did a solid job protecting their QB and their DL made some plays against ours.

Anyone with a brain knew that we’d have to play a great football game to win Friday night – and we didn’t. NC State has NEVER had the talent to line up against an SEC team like UT at a “nuetral site” (and it was a strectch to call the site nuetral) and expect a win…and you know what, we never will, unless we start bringing in 65-75K a year in attendance.

UT is a little like us in basketball. If their record stinks – it’s because their coach is struggling – but they will usually have enough talent to beat us if we turn the ball over.

Am I happy about the game or the defensive game-plan? Heck no. But you know what – we’re up 7-6 and playing pretty well, controlling the line-of scrimmage enough when Glennon makes one of the worst plays in his career. A few plays later we’re down 22-7.

You never notice the wind when it’s at your back – so most of us don’t think anything out of the ordinary when we get these kind of breaks and win….Well, most of the time in football, that’s what happens – just a few plays are the difference between a comfortable outcome and a miserable loss. And we had a thinner margin of error than UT.

Finally got home to Fayetteville, and had a chance to check out the stats from the game. Take away the 2 big pass plays Amerson got burned on , and long run due to missed tackles, and we are even on offensive yardage. And we did have 5 turnovers, and still only lost by 14, so to say we are not in the same league as Tennessee, is a bit more than I can accept. We beat ourselves with mistakes, and not all d/t Tenneesse’s’ defense. The safety was a result of Glennon not just getting rid of the ball, just to mention one. We have a chance next week to put this behind us against a good UConn team who won 37-0. So lets see if the coaches fixed our probems, and help lead the team to victory. And hopefully UT will kick some but next week, too.

  11. cWOhLFrPAiCKs 09/02/2012 at 8:08 PM #

To be honest, if you had told me that the 5 turnovers in this game were on Glennon and NOT fumbles by the RBs and WRs, I’d have thought you were smoking crack. The good thing (I think) is that that’s very uncharacteristic of Glennon and should be the exception, not the rule, going forward. If he doesn’t make two of those mistakes, we’re probably in this game til the end. Obviously, that didn’t happen, but it does give me hope that this game was lost because of nerves and a few bad plays, not an entire off-season spent banging our heads against the wall.

  12. ryebread 09/02/2012 at 9:13 PM #

Paul Johnson has won an ACC title and gone to a BCS bowl. That’s more than TOB has (and I suspect will ever) do at NC State.

Paul Johnson has won two 1AA championships. That’s more titles than any other coach in our league has ever won.

I will admit that I’d hoped that Paul Johnson would pass more. Maybe he would have given that he’d have had Wilson as his QB (as opposed to inheriting a QB who couldn’t throw). It will be interesting to see if they throw much against VT.

Your point about $$$ is definitely true. That’s the main reason I think we passed. It was unfortunate though.

I think that GT is one of the toughest football jobs in America. You’re trying to keep 70+ kids eligible at a school that just doesn’t have easy programs. You’re also trying to do it at a small school in the shadow of Georgia.

  13. choppack1 09/02/2012 at 9:34 PM #

Mak its not that we’re not in the same league…it is that they are more talented than most of our fans realize. And I do believe they are more talented than we are.

I also believe they clearly won the battle in the trenches…and I think they forced some of glennon’s poor plays and we didn’t force any for bray.

  14. mak4dpak 09/02/2012 at 10:27 PM #

The option to not throw the ball was clearly Glennon’s poor judgement, on the safety, and I agree we gave Bray all day, no blitzes, and paid for it. But again still not convinced we didn’t have the talent to win with. And I will say that some of Glennon’s passes were on target, and guys just dropped them. Anyway, hope we aren’t having the same discussion next week. Game at noon, so it will more than likely be televised again. Good coaching makes a difference, and not sure our OC/DC are in that category. They remind me of the Brady Bunch movie. Still old school!

  15. choppack1 09/02/2012 at 10:44 PM #

Mak I agree. We could have beaten ut, we had the talent to do it. We didn’t have the talent to do it without playing a very good game. We played good in spots, but not nearly good enough.

Our oc and dc are the same. I suspect we blitzed, but they just got picked up.

  16. mak4dpak 09/02/2012 at 10:55 PM #

In the spectrum of life the worst thing about the game, was finding out a young 20 y/o UT fan, who had been drinking too much, fell to his death, from the upper deck! Wish people knew when to stop!

  17. 61Packer 09/02/2012 at 11:10 PM #

I fail to see where TOB is more accomplished than Dick Sheridan, at least at State.

In my opinion, Sheridan had more success here than O’Brien’s had so far, plus Sheridan had to deal with FSU when they were at their very best. The ACC has been woeful during most of O’Brien’s stay in Raleigh, and we’re not even close to taking advantage of that. And if you look at this weekend’s results, FSU, Clemson, UNC, Duke, Miami, Virginia and even Boston College looked like they’re ahead of us right now. Both Techs will likely be as well. Couple that with our downhill recruiting trend, and we may be struggling in the coming seasons like Penn State did Saturday.

Sheridan put fire in the bellies of the Wolfpack faithful. Other than the 5 straight over UNC, I don’t see much enthusiasm from State fans over TOB’s tenure here so far. He’s a great guy and isn’t a bad coach by any means, but eventually, like Clint said the other night, if the results fall short, you gotta let the boss go.

I don’t know exactly what our results are expected to be, especially after reading all these comments that run from one end of the spectrum to the other. Maybe most of you are content with going 7-5 and 8-4 each season. We didn’t grab Paul Johnson when we had the chance, and I doubt there are many on here who honestly believe that we’d be worse off now with him at the helm. I don’t doubt O’Brien’s overall accomplishments as a head coach, but taking Wolfpack football to the next level won’t be one of them.

I saw this blowout coming a mile away. We have no talent. UT has been getting 4/5star guys for the past 40 years. They had a poor stretch with coaching changes, but the top 20 classes kept rolling in. No one really knew what teams would show up for game 1, but Vegas put the money on the talent, and was right.

Why did most people think our d-line was going to be good? We have 2/3 star guys on it. Who in their right mind thought Thomas Teal, Art Norman etc… would be SEC good? Hell, I can’t even name the other guys on our d-line from memory. I just don’t care that much anymore and no recruiting splashes since Glennon/Brandon Barnes for me to feign interest.

The ACC is so bad, and we are so unpredictable, that we will probably win 8 games this season (2 gimmees). If you expect more from a coach that runs the cleanest program in America, wake up.

  19. MiltonVol 09/03/2012 at 4:34 AM #

I’ve been reading the comments here and wanted to offer some thoughts from the perspective of a Vol fan on this game.

First off, not going to try and soothe the frustrations after a rough loss. Lots of Vol fans would be going through the same reactions had the game gone the other way. I can tell you that coming into the game, we really took the Pack as a team who could definitely beat us. Our mods on the 247 site consistently warned us not to think of this game as a gimme, and for the most part we took the advice. Stats don’t lie, and the combo of Glennon coming off a 31 td season and Amerson being an AA with a gazillion picks had us really worried. And frankly, we had way too many questions about our own team to feel much confidence. 7 new coaches, unproven rushing attack, losing Rogers, even Patterson had detractors who said the transition from junco to playing against Amerson was scary.

So we played the game and won. In post game analysis, we’ve been discussing whether we won on merits, or whether NCState was just bad. My own opinion, and what I think is the majority of the posters on 247, is that we played a quality team. I’ve seen a lot of comments here saying Glennon and Amerson just didn’t have their heads in the game. Based on our board’s game commentary thread, that is not what we saw. The are both ballers and we just got some good matchups. I expect ya’ll will crush UConn and continue to have an excellent season. Frankly, the better you do, the better I feel about my team! Just wanted to throw out there, that your fans who are proclaiming gloom and doom are dead wrong IMO. Good luck to you guys the rest of the way!

  20. tuckerdorm1983 09/03/2012 at 6:17 AM #

you know what I am proud of the “cleanest program” comment. We are the best 2/3 star team in Nation and could beat any other 2/3 star team out there. 4/5 star talent whips our ass most of the time. I expect FSU to put a beat down on us. we are and will be a 8/4 (plus or minus 1) team. UNC had 4/5 players and cheated and did not win. We are not a SEC top flight team, but I enjoy watching us and fully support the team.

  21. choppack1 09/03/2012 at 7:22 AM #

“In my opinion, Sheridan had more success here than O’Brien’s had so far, plus Sheridan had to deal with FSU when they were at their very best.”

I agree that Sheridan had more success. However, he only had to deal with FSU for 1 year in his tenure. He also got to face the 2 worst UNC teams in modern history.

He never had to play VaTech at their best, played Clemson when they were still recovering from sanctions – and like TOB, never won an ACC championship even though the ACC was very weak.

  22. Classof89 09/03/2012 at 8:54 AM #

Agree with the laments regarding present state of team. But I take issue with BJD’s lament that we are forever doomed to mediocrity. The right coach and a really solid financial commitment can transform even the most downtrodden programs. Just ask the fans at Oregon (two seasons with greater than 6 wins between 1965 and the program’s breakout Rose Bowl year in 1994) or Kansas State (3 winning seasons, none with more than 7 wins between 1955 and a similar breakout in the early 1990s.

As others have noted, what it will take is a visionary at coach propounding theories about how to build a football team that are dismissed by the football status quo. Problem is, it’s hard to tell the difference between a crackpot and a visionary (the basic difference seemingly being that “visionaries” get a lucky break somewhere along the way..)

  23. mak4dpak 09/03/2012 at 9:09 AM #

I can live with TOB, as coach, but he needs to step into this century, as the college game has changed. Changes are needed, when the fans can call the plays from the stands. Predictable. I don’t believe talent is our downfall, but coaching, and game preparation. Something we always seem to lack in big games. Unless it is UNC, and that might be coming to an end. Archer/Bible need to go, if they can’t be more inovative with their play calling. I mean, why do you run the ball down 2 scores late in the game, and allow valuable time to run off the clock. It ain’t rocket science. Again the coaches needed to step it up, or DY needs to make changes, I hope she has she started looking for a prospective replacement, in case one is needed.

  24. DieHardVOL 09/03/2012 at 9:17 AM #

Well guys I’m sure you feel all “doom and gloom” and I totally understand why. But hang in there and support your team. We scored on some big plays and forced some turnovers. IMO you guys would have beaten Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida on that 1st game. Instead yall were playing a hungry Tennessee team that had already labeled it as a must win. There are tons of positives from your team. Hang in there guys; you’ve got a hellava QB that will keep you competing at the top of the ACC this year, just stay behing them. Good Luck guys!

  25. TLeo 09/03/2012 at 12:09 PM #

MiltonVol and DiehardVol, thanks for the kind words. A lot of what you are reading is reaction to yet another year starting with a very poor performance. This was a very important game in terms of exposure, etc and we sucked yet again on a opening game. Obviously you have a good team that had a lot to do with it but at the same time we made too many stupid mistakes and had, as usual, easy to predict play caling from our OC. Lots of folks here have seen and are tired of the predictable offensive plays and some of the WTF defensive schemes from the DC. Lots of folks want to see the Def Co-ordinator gone and some feel the same about the OC and have for years. We just don’t seem to see the emotion and urgency until late in the season every year when it comes down to a losing or winning record.
