Gottfriend & Avent get raises

Wow! Big raise for Gottfried on one year’s performance. I sure hope we never hear of him entertaining offers from anyone else – including UCLA & Kentucky – in the future. Debbie Yow and NC State have provided him an opportunity when nobody else in basketball would do the same and continue to support him with significant staff and facilities resources.

Mark Gottfried’s contract got an automatic two-year extension when N.C. State made the NCAA tournament last March. The second-year basketball coach got a $750,000 raise on Friday for the Wolfpack’s 24-win season which ended in the Sweet 16.

Gottfried will make $1.95 million annually, which ranks third among ACC coaches. The N.C. State Board of Trustees approved raises for both Gottfried and baseball coach Elliott Avent, who led his team into the final 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Gottfried’s supplemental income went from $450,000 per year to $1.2 million under the new deal, which runs through the 2017-18 season. His base salary of $750,000 per year remains the same.

N.C. State went 24-13 in Gottfried’s first season reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006 and the Sweet 16 for only the second time since 1989. His original contract, signed in April 2011, called for an automatic two-year extension if he made the NCAA tournament in either of his first two seasons.

Avent led N.C. State’s baseball team to a 43-20 finish and a spot in the Super Regional round in the NCAA tournament. Avent received a $25,713 raise which brings his annual guaranteed compensation to $219,125 and his contract was extended one year, through the 2015 season

    Touche Alpha wolf.

We do need to look after Lutz, Moxley and Orlando. I have heard that Mox and Orlando are likely to follow Lutz once he gets his next head coaching gig which he will be offered numerous times over the next year or two.

Thats quite a loss,,need to make it harder for those guys to wander away.

    Aventuroo,

Gotcha, thanks. I remember extension but also it seemed I had read money was involved also. Must had been bonuses I was thinking he got for making tourney. Making me think it was also added to salary from then on.

This makes me think of Charlie Weis…. I am all for rewarding coaches but would have liked this to wait one more year. Woudn’t even have been opposed to the new contract next year retroactively pay for this comng year if the results were worth it. The automatic renewal significantly pushed up the by-out for Gottfriedso very surprised by this move. Hopefull it works out

    GCPack,

That is an excellent point. Moxley is a “Lutz” guy where Early and Rutland are Gottfried folks. They seem to make a very cohesive and synergistic entity. Bobby got a nice (I hope) raise earlier this year and his title changed. There were, according to some press reports, raises for 23 coaches that were presented and approved. It will take a reporter with FOI powers to get the details.

I did do some research and the three assitants got some nice increases from what Sidney was allowed. Now, the increases were NOT, on a percentage basis, commenurate with Gottfried’s guranteed salary versus Sidyney’s. But, as a veteran of many corporate changes and watching from the outside, the big guy gets both a bigger amount and a bigger percentage than the guys that report to him.

I have condfidence that Debbie recognizes the value of this talented team and spread the wealth around some.

They are a great group of guys. They will stop and talk to you and are very personable. I have met a few of them at non-STATE functions and they are really polite and gracious.

They understand, based on my limited conversations, the passion of the fans. I would bet that the coaches that were at Alabama understand PASSION.
