“The Carolina Way” = “an academic scandal that could be the worst the NCAA has ever seen”

Matt Hayes of The Sporting News has always been one of my favorite national writers and I have historically ascribed more value to his views and commentary than to the average sports writer. Well, today, Hayes just catapulted himself into the stratosphere of the “Mount Rushmore” of the national media.

In this MUST SEE 3 minute video, Hayes rips UNC-CHeat and the NCAA from all angles while he publicly recognizes the questions that SFN has been making for years regarding the true commitment and thoroughness of the NCAA’s obviously flawed “investigation” at UNC. We wanted to memorialize some of the quotes from the video. We’ll have more commentary later —————————

“I can tell you someone who is NOT getting to the bottom of it all — that is the NCAA”.

“It took [the NCAA] two years to NOT get to this point already.”

“The University and the athletics department are combining to have NO-SHOW classes to get credit …”

“The goes from football to basketball…this could be the harshest penalty that any University has ever seen, academically”

“It seems that the academic side and the athletics side…everyone is working together. Could this be ‘worst case scenario’?”

“We’ve learned after two years that the NCAA is not that good at investigating”

Great stuff-the magma keeps bubbling toward the top of the volcano…looking forward to the coming eruption!

Ok, so I’m listening to the David Glenn show….and if I’m to buy what he’s selling….there’s really nothing to all this fuss since the NCAA has “already completely investigated” UNC, slapped their hand and moved forward…never to revisit or look back….and all this mess you bloggers are spewing is just a bunch of hater speech from across town.

Maybe it’s just me, but this dude seems a bit biased.

Kane is a guest in the third hour. That might be interesting. Hope he can keep Glenn honest.

  3. StateFans 08/14/2012 at 1:18 PM #

Dave Glenn may want to take a reality check of what is being said at ESPN, CBS Sports, The Sporting News and other national media outlets.

But…of course….those media outlets aren’t owned by Don Curtis…so, surely they are biased.

  4. Wulfpack 08/14/2012 at 1:22 PM #

The NCAA MUST reopen its investigation.

  5. triadwolf 08/14/2012 at 1:26 PM #

Glenn may be right about the NCAA not coming back. However, it does not prevent an independent investigation by some other entity. The outcome of that investigation and any resulting action may indirectly force the NCAA to add penalties.

For example, if by some miracle a majority of the classes in question are determined to be bogus and UNC is forced to rescind any credit given to students. This will most likely affect the eligibility of players going back however far. Also, if it results in players not having enough credit for graduating, it will affect UNC’s APR going back. At that point I think the NCAA has to step in as it becomes a clear cut eligibility issue.

I hope they are forced to with the relentless attention.

  7. StateFans 08/14/2012 at 1:28 PM #

Just imagine if this happened at any school where John Calipari coached. The calls for everything he ever did to be vacated would be deafening.

  8. Packfan28 08/14/2012 at 1:44 PM #

I just posted these on the previous thread:

Gregg Doyel tweeted he has been ignoring this issue for too long, and he’s coming out with an article about it shortly.

Paul Biancardi tweeted “Julius Peppers’ agent was also his academic advisor? That’s a typo, right?”

  9. mafpack 08/14/2012 at 1:53 PM #

Another good one, could be older, I’m not sure. But it’s on the SN main home page as a top video link. I think he’s even more clear in this video. Brutal!

I can only hope that the 1924 Helms National championship banner will now have to come down.

  11. ncsu1987 08/14/2012 at 2:00 PM #

Damn! Read the last sentence in Doyel’s article and savor it.

  12. YogiNC 08/14/2012 at 2:07 PM #

“For starters? There are some banners at the Smith Center that need to come down”… WOW! Someone outside of the “red” zone said it!!!!

Dave Glenn is an ID 10 T. I hope they burn so bad that they cancel his show because he would have nothing to talk about.

  13. Rochester 08/14/2012 at 2:13 PM #

What happens first, Dan Kane shows up at the bottom of Kerr Lake wearing cement shoes, or the NCAA reopens its “investigation”?

Oh, and can one of the moderators please incorporate the mushroom cloud picture into the site banner? That way we can see it on ever story, and it really seems to fit.

  14. triadwolf 08/14/2012 at 2:17 PM #

The UNC BOG and the NCAA are really going to start feeling the pressure now that the national media is joining the show. Roy has got to be going ape shit with every little tidbit that gets released.

At first I wanted swift and severe punishment for those bastards, but I now am enjoying the process – an extremely slow, painful death.

  15. notagain 08/14/2012 at 2:18 PM #

DG is such a unx homer…

Anybody listen to his interview with Kane? Seemed to me like he was trying to do anything he could to undermine Kane’s work. “So is part of your job description to sit around and read sports blogs all day?” Are you kidding me???

“Ive been around sports for 25 years…dirty underbelly (athletic issues) exist at all of the hundreds of schools around the country, all to different degrees.”

    He really is an idiot

re: the NCAA has “already completely investigated”

Haha – that’s the party line spewed by the hardcore apologists on the EPSN threads. The are more than fine to look the other way and use the lack of rigor on NCAA’s part to excuse what’s been going on. They actually believe that U*NC has uncovered all this themselves, and that nothing new has been found.

The wavering Walmarters have retreated to the “everyone does it” defense, which is funny since they are admitting that U*NC isn’t what it purported to be. It’s funny to watch the carnage among that group, since they didn’t attend U*NC, they really have no vested interest other than riding coattails, and now they’re looking for another ride…

  17. GAWolf 08/14/2012 at 2:42 PM #

It’s really a tragedy what DG has done with the ACC Sports Journal and his potential. He’s falling apart.

  18. Rochester 08/14/2012 at 2:43 PM #

Q: Why did Peppers only get a B in a made up class? Was he not good enough at pretending to get an A or were they trying to keep it believable?

  19. Tampa-Pack 08/14/2012 at 2:46 PM #

I know its probably been answered, but we know FB and BB players made up the majority of the attendees in these classes, but do we know how many were other athletes, baseball, soccer, former athletes finishing their degree*, and on and on. Very soon, I hope, the dam is gonna break, bringing down the whole house of cards!!!

  20. Tampa-Pack 08/14/2012 at 2:47 PM #

and in the end, they’ll owe it all to State fans for bringing them down – even sweeter!

  21. triadwolf 08/14/2012 at 2:52 PM #

I’ve gone from hoping for swift, severe action to enjoying the process – a slow, agonizing death…

  22. logarithm 08/14/2012 at 2:58 PM #

I wonder how long it could have gone on if they hadn’t hired Butch Davis and John Blake who recruited too many colossal, outspoken idiots too fast and put them beyond a critical mass.

My concern here is that there’s no way for the NCAA to come back in without it being clear to everyone that they missed all of this the first time, and they’d be publicly admitting it. They seem to be gunning for a “new sheriff in town” opinion of themselves with the Penn State atrocities and their handling of this situation is completely counter to that. Simpler for them if they wait long enough for state government officials to take action and then let their buffoonery get lost in the sands of time.

Let me go ahead and say this for Jimmy V. “Payback is a Bitch”

It appears UNC-Cheat will succumb to a death by a thousand cuts. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of people.
