NC State signs deal with Adidas

GoPack.com reports NC State has signed a deal with Adidas.

I am not sure what to think about this. I have heard that Nike will never sign NCSU because of the whole Jimmy V travesty so that might not even be an option but Adidas has always seemed like the “runner up” in the shoe wars. However, the list of schools signing with Adidas is pretty impressive. Will this have any effect on recruiting?

No matter what it should bring in some extra funds and that is extremely important.

I prefer adidas to Nike. I really do not like how nike takes over sports via the shoe market. Nike is a fashion first, quality second kind of operation.

With the frequency of leg, knee, and ankle injuries we have experienced over the last few years, I have been suspicious of our footwear. I hope this doesnt doom us to more of the same.

Nike drops State because of Jimmy V. and stands by the likes of Tiger Woods. Wow, great bunch of folks over there at Nike.

    ^ Apples to oranges.

One was a client who wronged, the other was a client who was wronged that arguably led to his death.

Jimmy V had the shoe deal with Nike, NC State was ancillary.

If I were Nike, I’d do the same thing. I just wouldn’t be coy about it. I’d make sure everyone knew exactly why.

Speaking of which… With their stellar track record thus far, I’m looking for Woodson and Yow to rectify the “Jimmy V thing” soon.

To date, they seem to “get it”. Let’s hope its just a matter of time.

I’d love (but don’t expect) for something to be done that not only honors V and officially brings him name and legacy back into the fold, but also publicly denounces the corruption, hypocrisy, and incompetence that created the witch hunt atmosphere that lead to his ouster and the unjustified trashing of his name and reputation.

I’m looking at Golenbach, Simon, the N&O, the ACC leadership, and our own smug, pompous, corrupt administration of the time.

Let’s see that same spunk and spirit that took on the “Hess situation” be put to something that is far more important and long overdue.

Why does Nike hold a grudge (it sounds like that’s what some are saying) against State? NC State is an institution. The people that were involved with dumping Valvano are no longer in power at State. So they aren’t penalizing anyone that was involved. But they might just be hurting innocent people that had nothing to do with any of that.

Why do they even care? Aren’t they about marketing? Are we sure it isn’t just because we have stunk it up for the last 20+ years and they don’t want their name associated with us (yet)?

And I thought they dumped Tiger, too.

Btw, I never buy Nike shoes. Unless I find a pair that is comfortable and competitive with the cheapo shoes that I buy!

I personally think that Adidas gear is far superior in quality to Nike gear. Plus we’ll get all kinds of awesome Adizero and Adipure coaches/golf shirts. Good move for State…glad we didn’t go to UA or Nike. If this does have an effect on recruiting, then I think that’s ridiculous…but then again I’m not an 18 year old kid coming to play sports for us, so I guess my opinion doesn’t matter. Either way, good news IMO.

As to all the grumbling about Nike…our women’s basketball team has been wearing Nike for a while now…so was somebody at Nike mad at our mens basketball and football teams? I do hate to see the baseball team lose their freakin’ awesome Majestic uniforms so hopefully Adidas can give them something comparable.

I’m just glad we didn’t sign with Under Armour. I can’t stand their fan apparel and would much rather be sporting some fresh adidas gear.

On a separate note, I wish they would carry those Ralph Lauren polos with the State insignia on the arm. I loved those shirts.

I like the Adidas uniforms. They have proven they can step out and be bold (black and pink) but not too out there like Nike and UA. We had Nike jerseys during Amato’s first few years when Rivers was playing. The lower extremity injuries are coming from the chop blocks and illegal attacking of the legs by the likes of Wake, GT, and UMD, not the shoes.
    Good move by the pack

We had Nike through the 90’s and up until the Amato years. During one of Chuck’s early years, he refused to wear Nike sunglasses prefering his “lucky” Oakley’s. The rumor then was that Nike broke off the agreement because of that. I am not sure that is true, but the following year we where wearing Adidas.

Didn’t we have a basketball shoe deal with LA Gear for a short time at one point? I want to say during a couple of Les’ years. Talk about pussing out.

I’m fine with Adidas. Never did understand why folks get so ramped about Nike. Aside from some of their recent football unis (which admittedly are pretty sharp), their retail gear is pretty inferior.

  16. packplantpath 04/25/2012 at 12:28 PM #

Cue the wailing and gnashing of teeth over Adidas and their poorly designed ugly uniforms.

And I find the whole idea that Nike won’t deal with us because we fired Valvano quite silly. If Nike wouldn’t deal with our athletic department, it had far more to do with the fact that it was run by baboons than any historical incident.

  17. Ed89 04/25/2012 at 12:30 PM #

^Agreed. Some of their unis look nice, but overall, Adidas retail gear is far superior to Nike in both appearance and quality, IMO.

I’m kinda surprised the university would go for this. Seem like they’d be leery of “shoe deals”.

I never understood the issue with Addidas other than the supposed impact on leg/ankle injuries. I am not sure there is any statistical correlation, but appears to be guilt by association.

I like my Addidas polos and I have always preferred their tennis shoes. I have not owned Nike tennis shoes in 15-20 years.

The lack of merchandise is more a correlation with poor performance on field/court. The merchandise selection and availability will improve when the Brand on NC State improves (hence just a 4 year deal from Yow).

This isn’t right. Nike did our football unis during Philip’s years, and I believe the re-design during the Mario years that followed. I own Nike fan apparel, so they’ve made it.

I think Adidas has the cleanest-looking fan apparel (ie, no NASCAR designs) and uniforms. Can’t speak to the shoes, but we seem to have an unusually high number of foot and ankle injuries.

  21. newt 04/25/2012 at 12:46 PM #

I highly doubt that Nike/State’s relationship is impacted by Jimmy V.

I think Adidas is much cooler and seems more popular with 10-12 year-olds than Nike. Adidas Originals are awesome.

  22. Wufpacker 04/25/2012 at 12:53 PM #

We’re not the only school that wears Adidas. Do other Adidas schools have a disproportionate % of foot/ankle injuries? Would be interesting to know but I’m frankly too lazy to research it. I doubt there would be any correlation, however. I think our foot/ankle issues have had far more to do with conditioning and sports medicine at NCSU.

  23. WTNY 04/25/2012 at 12:55 PM #

Regardless if it is Adidas or Nike, I’m just glad that the Athletic Dept was able to negotiate an all-sports deal that will benefit State. Well done.

  24. LRM 04/25/2012 at 12:58 PM #

Off the top of my head, Notre Dame, UCLA, Tennessee and Texas A&M all wear Adidas as well.

We’ve been wearing Adidas for football and basketball for the past few years.

“However, the list of schools signing with Adidas is pretty impressive. Will this have any effect on recruiting?”

Hopefully yes, in a good way. Notre Dame, Tennessee, Kansas, Wisconsin, Louisville, Michigan, Indiana, Cincinnati, Texas A&M, UCLA, Mississippi State and Nebraska are the other schools with all sports deals with Adidas. The most interesting thing about this list to me is that we are the only Adidas school in the ACC.
