ACC: Hess reprimanded (8pm Update)

8pm Update:
J.P. Giglio writes that Gugs and Fire were kicked out for “excessive demonstration” (N&O):

In the email to N.C. State, Hess wrote:

“They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table. The policeman at the end of the FSU bench was warned that their continual excessive demonstration that incited the crowd would result in ejection.”

ACC commissioner John Swofford issued a statement on Monday night about Hess’ role in the ejection.

“Karl Hess is one of the best on-court officials in college basketball, but the ACC has established a game management protocol, which allows the opportunity to potentially diffuse any situations before they reach the level of ejection,” Swofford’s statement read.

“This reprimand is a result of a failure to follow that protocol. We have to depend on our officials and their judgments; and the explanation from Karl Hess regarding this matter has been shared with the ACC and N.C. State University.”

As further evidence this is nothing but typical ACC bullshit, here are two examples of regular fan behavior that is in fact, not considered “excessive demonstration” by the ACC.

Meanwhile, this is Gugs and Fire completely out of control — just look at that body language!

Out of control!

Hess must not have been working this game.

Not sure what’s changed since the statement Saturday Night — other than I think the ACC expected us to get over this, ignoring the fact we haven’t the proclivity for getting over stuff — but Karl Hess got a slap on the wrist (WRAL):

The Atlantic Coast Conference has publicly reprimanded official Karl Hess for failing to follow procedure when ejecting two former North Carolina State stars from the stands during a weekend game.

In a statement Monday night, the league said it had conducted a “thorough review” of the events leading up to Hess’ ejections of former Wolfpack stars Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from seats behind the scorer’s table during Saturday’s loss to Florida State.

The reprimand doesn’t reveal a reason why Hess ejected Corchiani and Gugliotta…

WTVD’s Mark Armstrong says via Twitter (@ArmstrongWTVD):

Just got word from State that the ACC is expected to release more info about Saturday’s ejections tonight.

Stay tuned.  I think we can sum up State fans’ reaction to the ACC’s latest statement:

I’m damn near close to weeping for some of you.

Not really, but if you ain’t in the Peace Corp , or knocking on my door with the latest edition of THE WATCH TOWER…then I wanna know why ?

    Seriously.

    My $0.50:

The ACC is just tossing Yow a bone hoping she’ll go play with it and leave them be.

If Gugs and Fire displayed “excessive demonstration”, surely there’s video evidence of it. Seems like they just wanted to make sure the word excessive appeared in the explanation so it sounded like it met the letter of the rule they quoted previously.

The light of day must shine on this foul calling racket. Letting it go means letting it continue.

Everyone should go to the ACC website and leave an e-mail or make a phone call. Tell them how displeased we are with this crock of shit reprimand of Karl Hess. Let them really now how pissed off we are. Fill their in-box full.

Some on here would lead us to believe it is our job as fans to get focused for the up-coming game and not let distractions take us away from that.

    Contrary.

A great way to show up for a game in the RBC is to be cheering loudly for the Pack and holding up a sign that comments on distractions leading up to the game that week. It has always been a fan’s prerogative to deal with distractions while the players focus on the game. That,s part of college basketball atmosphere.

‎”Don’t worry Karl, we got your back. It’s just NC State.” – John Swofford

  7. stillapackfan 02/20/2012 at 11:04 PM #

So let me get this straight. You all believe that during a time out, the refs huddled and said “hey guys state’s up by too much, let’s adjust the timing of the fouls.”

  8. TOBtime 02/20/2012 at 11:05 PM #

Man that was a great answer Gott had in the video.

Wonder if he’ll be reprimanded for commenting on the reprimand? Or, tossed out of the game tomorrow for commenting on the ejections Saturday? Maybe he’ll be cited for excessive behaviour and THEN ejected…just prior to getting a reprimand.

    SCREW the ACC.

  9. TOBtime 02/20/2012 at 11:08 PM #

^No dingleberry they huddled and said the ACC can’t be embarrassed by having Duke blown away at home so let’s see what State can do when reined in.

    Gott it?

Bombard the ACC website with angry e-mails. Overload their inbox. Let them know how pissed we are!

Swofford, Hess and the ACC sucks!!! Shout it from the roof tops!!!! Leave the ACC now, even without an invite to another conference. This is a garbage! Either Fire Swofford or get out NOW!!!

“So let me get this straight. You all believe that during a time out, the refs huddled and said “hey guys state’s up by too much, let’s adjust the timing of the fouls.”

I don’t think Coach Gott instructed the team to come out of halftime and foul Duke 10 times within the first 3 minutes.

    Neither scenario is plausible.

I can’t speculate why the refs called the second half differently in the Duke game. To tell the truth, the ‘why’ really doesn’t matter. The fact is that the game was not called consistently. Consistency is a hallmark of professional officiating.

The ACC is pretty much dead to me now. I think the pictures of fans inches away from players and holding wanted posters are great. Too bad that we, as second place citizens, are not allowed to participate. In a recent radio interview, I heard Lennie Rosenbluth, of all people, talking about how they hated playing at Wake’s old arena because Wake’s football players had seats on the sideline, and they would pull the opposing players’ leg hair when they stepped out to inbounds the ball. Now, we can’t even tell a ref he sucks?

Again, I care nothing for the ACC. I only care about the Pack now. Any circumstance that hurts the conference is fine with me. Swofford’s statement is disgusting, the Duke game was disgusting, Hess is disgusting, and the whole notion that “Carolina traditionally doesn’t commit as many fouls” is disgusting. At least in the NBA the bias is in favor of the star players who are somewhat distributed throughout the league. The ACC’s bias is in favor of just two teams, and all other teams will always be fighting an uphill battle. We had better hope that our new recruits will make us significantly better than the competition because we are basically starting with a ten point deficit every time we play one of the blues. We better hope also that our program is beyond squeaky clean because even one pair of shoeLACES sold will be used to bring down Gottfried now that the conference sees that he is a good coach. The next Golenbock is out there somewhere, and I bet he has a UNC journalism diploma on his wall.

“The ACC might even conduct a “thorough” investigation of the matter and consider recommendations from some blue ribbon panel of has beens and wanna bees. In the end, they will do nothing and say nothing all the while pretending they are doing everything and saying everything. The truth of the matter is they will be uttering nonsense to muddle the situation so as to purposely avoiding any action.”

Just insert “UNC-CHeat” for “ACC” and it sounds just like the NCAA investigation. Is Swoffart consulting for the Holes in their NCAA troubles! Maybe that’s why he went to the COI meeting last fall!

  19. Manu Ginobili 02/21/2012 at 12:16 AM #

Hey, if two countries started an actual war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_War) after a soccer match, I can’t see why we can use this incident as our turning point to leave the ACC.

Their “response” to the Hessgate and following “reprimand” of the culprit is becoming more offensive than the actual incident and could be translated as: “f#ck you NC State, you are an also-ran university in our conference, and we couldn’t care less about your role in the history of college basketball.”

I think this is Hess’ phone number. xxx-xxx-xxxx
I took it down because some thought it to be wrong. So, go do an internet search if you want it. Geeze-

  21. mrwufabc 02/21/2012 at 1:00 AM #

This Karl G. Hess’ home number:
    xxx-xxx.xxxx
I took the number down. Don’t want to get banned from here. Just go look it up in anywho.com. Seriously wish someone would contact him for a interview. Moderator from State fan nation-just a thought.

  22. Wufpacker 02/21/2012 at 1:00 AM #

I cannot believe you did that. Please, please….PLEASE….no one call that number.

Why do some folks have no judgement?

  23. mrwufabc 02/21/2012 at 1:05 AM #

The purpose of my post is this… I believe this(StateFANnation) to be a legit media outlet. I’m not certain how anybody does the feature leads on this blog, but might I suggest that one of them give this guy a call and conduct a legit interview with him.

  24. Wufpacker 02/21/2012 at 1:09 AM #

Even if true (which I do not believe for a second), posting it PUBLICLY is effing ridiculous.

And which one is the right number? Do you even know if either one is correct? Somehow, I don’t think you do.

  25. UrbanWolf 02/21/2012 at 1:17 AM #

“excessive demonstration” — is that more or less offensive than “giving him the business”?
