ACC: Hess reprimanded (8pm Update)

8pm Update:
J.P. Giglio writes that Gugs and Fire were kicked out for “excessive demonstration” (N&O):

In the email to N.C. State, Hess wrote:

“They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table. The policeman at the end of the FSU bench was warned that their continual excessive demonstration that incited the crowd would result in ejection.”

ACC commissioner John Swofford issued a statement on Monday night about Hess’ role in the ejection.

“Karl Hess is one of the best on-court officials in college basketball, but the ACC has established a game management protocol, which allows the opportunity to potentially diffuse any situations before they reach the level of ejection,” Swofford’s statement read.

“This reprimand is a result of a failure to follow that protocol. We have to depend on our officials and their judgments; and the explanation from Karl Hess regarding this matter has been shared with the ACC and N.C. State University.”

As further evidence this is nothing but typical ACC bullshit, here are two examples of regular fan behavior that is in fact, not considered “excessive demonstration” by the ACC.

Meanwhile, this is Gugs and Fire completely out of control — just look at that body language!

Out of control!

Hess must not have been working this game.

Not sure what’s changed since the statement Saturday Night — other than I think the ACC expected us to get over this, ignoring the fact we haven’t the proclivity for getting over stuff — but Karl Hess got a slap on the wrist (WRAL):

The Atlantic Coast Conference has publicly reprimanded official Karl Hess for failing to follow procedure when ejecting two former North Carolina State stars from the stands during a weekend game.

In a statement Monday night, the league said it had conducted a “thorough review” of the events leading up to Hess’ ejections of former Wolfpack stars Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from seats behind the scorer’s table during Saturday’s loss to Florida State.

The reprimand doesn’t reveal a reason why Hess ejected Corchiani and Gugliotta…

WTVD’s Mark Armstrong says via Twitter (@ArmstrongWTVD):

Just got word from State that the ACC is expected to release more info about Saturday’s ejections tonight.

Stay tuned.  I think we can sum up State fans’ reaction to the ACC’s latest statement:

You know my chosen remedy. We can even say “we didn’t leave the ACC…the ACC left us.”

Then perhaps maybe life for the rest of the non-blues afterwards…as it did in the Big 12 after Texas A-M and Mizzou bolted.

So…we are Texas A-M. Who shall be our Mizzou?

    F the ACC.

Kind of hard to reclaim something when you are held to a different set of rules.

^Va Tech BJD95. Va Tech. UVA isn’t going anywhere without the holes.

  4. Wulfpack 02/20/2012 at 9:35 PM #

I’ll take Va Tech, Clemson or FSU, BJD. And I do believe those are the most likely partners. And I do believe the SEC would listen in a heartbeat.

  5. BJD95 02/20/2012 at 9:36 PM #

Their life improves afterwards, I mean. Like how Texas backed off quite a bit to keep the rest of the Big 12 from following suit.

But without someone doing something extremely dramatic…nothing will change.

VPI is the best cultural and TV market fit.

Since we’re being all secessionist and whatnot, perhaps a few “Forget, hell!” Posters would be appropriate.

ain’t nobody going no where. That is just a bunch of bravado. I am telling you the end will be most dissatisfying. It will simply go away and nothing will happen. I think it is over as we speak.

  9. highstick 02/20/2012 at 9:40 PM #

DY, you’ve been “bitch slapped”!! Respond!

  10. 61Packer 02/20/2012 at 9:43 PM #

tucker, I agree that this will simply go away and nothing will happen. Just like the NCAA investigation of UNC football.

  11. BJD95 02/20/2012 at 9:43 PM #

Our solemn duty is to fan the flames so our people won’t just lie back and take it. We have to make it VERY uncomfortable for them to let it go.

  12. Wulfpack 02/20/2012 at 9:44 PM #

Stick, as I’ve stated several times over on these threads – they ain’t listening. DY is doing everything she can. In one ear and out the other. Zero respect.

“They want this to just go away.”

And so do I. Give it a rest. Get over it. Stop the whining. Let’s focus on supporting the current players.

  14. runwiththepack 02/20/2012 at 9:48 PM #

Hess said he warned the policeman at the end of the FL St. bench.

Well, i feel so much better about my wolfpack getting kicked in the groin again. First the ejection – and now the “reprimand”.

  15. BJD95 02/20/2012 at 9:50 PM #

If you want to let the league shit all over NC State, then by all means…let it go. Just don’t be surprised that 95 percent of us disagree.

  16. packbackr04 02/20/2012 at 9:52 PM #

whos not supporting the players. i think we would not be supporting them by allowing the sh!tshow to continue

  17. BJD95 02/20/2012 at 9:53 PM #

In my view, by NOT letting it go, you support all Wolfpack student athletes – past, present, and future.

  18. swamppack 02/20/2012 at 9:54 PM #

Does the university not deserve a little support from the league against this slime from Virginia? What a sad commentary on where the league is at today.

  19. Radman 02/20/2012 at 9:58 PM #

    Quoted from Swofford’s statement:

“We have to depend on our officials and their judgments; and the explanation from Karl Hess regarding this matter has been shared with the ACC and N.C. State University.””

So the league is saying they are standing behind Hess version of events despite numerous witnesses stating otherwise. Shit like this is why I am fed up with college athletics.

  20. stillapackfan 02/20/2012 at 9:59 PM #

I guarantee the players could care less about what happened. They care that they laid an egg and they are just focusing on not repeating the performance tomorrow night.

You all do remember there’s a game tomorrow, don’t you?

“They want this to just go away.”

    [ “And so do I. ” ]

Grab a bimby, curl up, nestle that thumb in your mouth and we’ll sing a lullaby.

People like Googs and Corch are what made the ACC great. Swofford has pretty much S*** all over that sort of history with the future scheduling and now this sort of bush league stunt. They stand behind everything Hess did but do not support THE founding institution of this once great conference. I am only 24 but my dad was a freshman in 74 so I know all about our history, and he admits it is not the same conference anymore. I am all for getting the hell out, and people that say we should just get over it, well I just do not understand you at all

  23. Wulfpack 02/20/2012 at 10:01 PM #

Letting it go is exactly what they want from us. Provided that we are not in any way, shape or from receiving a fair shake – I say we vow to make their lives a living hell by demanding action. I know nothing will come of it, but at least we’ll have the satisfaction that we are an enormous pain in the side of those that discount us as inconsequential. At some point, you have to take a stand. Now is as good of a time as any. What at all do we have to lose?

  24. LRM 02/20/2012 at 10:01 PM #

You know, I could really care less what the players think about this. I hope they don’t care, because it’s not their job to care.

But I’m a lifelong fan and a WPC member and I very much care about it.

  25. packbackr04 02/20/2012 at 10:03 PM #

you dont think the players know they get hosed by the refs all the time? why else do you think Scott Wood said “they probably said “go State”
