ACC: Hess reprimanded (8pm Update)

8pm Update:
J.P. Giglio writes that Gugs and Fire were kicked out for “excessive demonstration” (N&O):

In the email to N.C. State, Hess wrote:

“They were ejected for excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table. The policeman at the end of the FSU bench was warned that their continual excessive demonstration that incited the crowd would result in ejection.”

ACC commissioner John Swofford issued a statement on Monday night about Hess’ role in the ejection.

“Karl Hess is one of the best on-court officials in college basketball, but the ACC has established a game management protocol, which allows the opportunity to potentially diffuse any situations before they reach the level of ejection,” Swofford’s statement read.

“This reprimand is a result of a failure to follow that protocol. We have to depend on our officials and their judgments; and the explanation from Karl Hess regarding this matter has been shared with the ACC and N.C. State University.”

As further evidence this is nothing but typical ACC bullshit, here are two examples of regular fan behavior that is in fact, not considered “excessive demonstration” by the ACC.

Meanwhile, this is Gugs and Fire completely out of control — just look at that body language!

Out of control!

Hess must not have been working this game.

Not sure what’s changed since the statement Saturday Night — other than I think the ACC expected us to get over this, ignoring the fact we haven’t the proclivity for getting over stuff — but Karl Hess got a slap on the wrist (WRAL):

The Atlantic Coast Conference has publicly reprimanded official Karl Hess for failing to follow procedure when ejecting two former North Carolina State stars from the stands during a weekend game.

In a statement Monday night, the league said it had conducted a “thorough review” of the events leading up to Hess’ ejections of former Wolfpack stars Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from seats behind the scorer’s table during Saturday’s loss to Florida State.

The reprimand doesn’t reveal a reason why Hess ejected Corchiani and Gugliotta…

WTVD’s Mark Armstrong says via Twitter (@ArmstrongWTVD):

Just got word from State that the ACC is expected to release more info about Saturday’s ejections tonight.

Stay tuned.  I think we can sum up State fans’ reaction to the ACC’s latest statement:

Jimmy V said it best “Refs. Can’t trust em”.

    Break Break Break

If the SEC even HINTS at an invite, we should leave so fast the air around the Acc headquarters is popping from State’s exit breaking the sound barrier.

Ashley gets a permanent pass from me 🙂

http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees This site rates all of the refs in the country and while Hess is top of the list in games reffed, he is not mentioned in the best rated. I guess everyone has their own opinion and kicking two packers out of a game for no reason elevates him to some people.

“You dont think the players know they get hosed by the refs all the time?”

Just curious…in exactly how many games this season did the Pack have significantly more fouls than the other team?

  5. wolfpacker 02/20/2012 at 10:13 PM #

Swoff, just like the BOG just wants to sweep everything under the rug. Apparently they ‘think’ they can get by with anything…and the certainly do a good job of protecting those that play their game.

He is no visionary…never has been.

He wants other teams to pay for the wrong they do (Clemson), but find a way to get his cheating holes OFF?

And now that they got caught, he’s almost game for paying players…WHERE IS MR. FRIDAY? Wasn’t the AGENDA 20 years ago to PREVENT this sort of BEHAVIOR?

So Dave Glenn and his famous “sources” indicated at noon today that Hess could not point to a specific reason that he tossed Corch and Googs. Yet, 8 hours later a cop was warned and Corch and Googs were “inciting the crowd.” Either ol’Dave and his famous “sources” were wrong, or Hess and the ACC made that bullshit up.

the foul issue has been discussed ad naseum. its not necessarily the # of fouls called, but many other factors like the timing(see, Duke game from Thursday)

  8. swamppack 02/20/2012 at 10:20 PM #

^^comparative # of fouls is not the main issue.

  9. TheCOWDOG 02/20/2012 at 10:20 PM #

I want you to talk to me Stiller…I want you to address me.

I want you to look down that first base line and ask for help.

Son, you missed the pitch, and ya need some help.

Stillapackfan fan…you’re Swofford or an idiot or both if you cannot understand why the number differential of fouls during the Duke game are not the problem. Duke could have had more fouls than us over the course the course ofmthe game and the valid complaint we have still stands. Please just stop posting your nonsense. It’s tired.

The “timing” of fouls. Are you serious?

  12. GAWolf 02/20/2012 at 10:24 PM #

    You’re an idiot.

  13. packbackr04 02/20/2012 at 10:27 PM #

when we start the 2nd half by picking up 14 fouls in 7 minutes, making us play the last 14 minutes of the game with multiple starters on the bench, then yes, the timing of the fouls in the Duke game absolutely played a role

  14. swamppack 02/20/2012 at 10:28 PM #

Suggestion: Pay no more attention to the self-appointed antagonist.

  15. GAWolf 02/20/2012 at 10:29 PM #

Why I’m even doing this I have no idea, but read this carefully and attempt to comprehend please.

If we have a short bench and five reall god starters. Duke has five decent starters but a decent bench as well. Our starting five can, and did, beat the starting five of Duke like a drum. The refs opted to change the course of the game by ramping upthe foul calls early in the second half. As a result, 4 of our starting 5 sat on the bench for the majority of the second half. Duke makes huge comeback. We put starters back in and even though they cannot play defense or be aggressive on offense because of foul trouble essentially putting the final nail in the coffin, most of them still fouled out burying us for certain.

    Got it?

  16. LRM 02/20/2012 at 10:29 PM #

The whistles blow incessantly for 30 mins — at a pace of one per minute — and then when Duke is down 20 and forced to into uber-aggressive, hacking mode, the whistles stop. You’re right, timing doesn’t matter.

  17. beeeejay 02/20/2012 at 10:31 PM #

Guys people that do not understand this timing of fouls issue either just do not get basketball or are trolling hard.

I am glad to see that you are as pissed off as us fans that didn’t have the opportunity to play for our great university COWDOG. As they say I’m mad as hell and I don’t want to take this anymore.

let this crap die folks. Mr. Gott is going to take our program to the next level and then the next level. I want to focus on the positive. I want to focus on how we defeat the heels tomorrow. I want to focus on how we win the three games after that. I want to focus on our run for the ACC championship and how our team rebounds from adversity. I want to focus on how me make the NCAAT and how we play well in it. I want to focus on the best recruiting class NCST basketball has ever had. Thats what I want to focus on.

  19. WV Wolf 02/20/2012 at 10:34 PM #

Totally agree on the timing of fouls. Another definition of timing, you play great defense for 30 seconds and then get called for a ticky tack touch foul with 2 on the shot clock.

  20. stillapackfan 02/20/2012 at 10:37 PM #

Sorry Tucker, but we are too busy focusing on the timing of fouls.

SFN Note: No one’s forcing you to post here.

The small handful claiming not to “understand” are just throwing out red herrings. It’s been explained many times and in great detail.

Again, the bottom line is disrespect.
