NFL Draft Open Thread

One of my favorite nights of the year is upon us – first round coverage of the NFL draft. Although we will have to wait until the weekend to hear Nate Irving’s name called, there’s still plenty of interesting things going on. We’ve been talking about the Panthers’ likely (and stupid) decision to draft Cam Newton here. My co-favorite team – how much fun was last fall/winter for me, cheering for easily the two worst teams in pro football – is on the clock next. Not much suspense there, either – unless the Panthers sober up and take him first, Alabama’s Marcell Dareus will be the second player chosen and hopefully lead the next “Orange Crush.”

This might be the last NFL excitement for quite some time…so enjoy it while you can.

After the Panthers drafted Newton, I’m that much closer to being okay with not having an NFL season.

ATL gave up waaay too much to jump up and get Julio Jones.

C)Tiger Woods didn’t win a tourney all year
D)Duke kept unx from winning ACC tourney
    E)We didn’t hire Shaka Smart

Wow, the Titans with the first indefensible selection. That’s just stupid (Locker).

  6. swamppack 04/28/2011 at 8:27 PM #

The Panthers picked Newton? AW shucks.

  7. MrPack12 04/28/2011 at 8:29 PM #

    You guys are all delusional.

Cam will be a fine qb. Just wait.

Alabama’s Marcell Dareus will be the second player chosen and hopefully lead the next “Orange Crush.”

This was discussed early tonight on ESPN….with the talking heads correctly nailing the Denver’s decision between a run-stopping DT or an edge rusher. Herm Edwards was voting for a DT (and I agreed).

Though I am OK with Denver sucking.

^^You ought not to say things like that.

  10. packalum08 04/28/2011 at 8:58 PM #

    Ponder to the Vikings. Thoughts?

  11. packalum08 04/28/2011 at 9:03 PM #

    ^First ACC player drafted.

Stupid pick by the Vikes. And wow, is that Detroit front four ever going to be sick.

  13. theTHRILL 04/28/2011 at 9:07 PM #

Per Chris Berman, Robert Quinn’s one-year suspension wasn’t disciplinary “in any way.”

  14. packalum08 04/28/2011 at 9:08 PM #

And now the Rams pick up Robert Quinn. St. Louis is nice, but it’s no Miami.

Trade Newton for Michael Vick and a couple of addicts~~

Russell Wilson for QB! Anything other than Cam Newton!

I’m not the biggest panther fan but I think you can wait to panic. You are complaining about a guy who won a NC and Heisman. I don’t know if he was the best QB in the draft but hey you can do a lot worse.

BJD – My God, there are going to be some low scoring games in the NFC north. Bears offense, who knows with the vikings, the lions, and then on their island the Green Bay Packers (In Chris Berman Voice)

Who would have figured anyone ever saying this since the retirement of Barry… but the lions are going to fun to watch this year!

  17. packalum08 04/28/2011 at 9:31 PM #

NFC North will be interesting for sure, with GB on top and a mad dash for mediocrity and 2nd place. As for Cam Newton, winning a NC and Heisman…Chris Weinke, anyone?

    I kid.

  18. BJD95 04/28/2011 at 9:38 PM #

Assuming there’s a season, Lions/Bears will be on MNF. That will be interesting just to see if/when Jay Cutler dies.

  19. choppack1 04/28/2011 at 9:43 PM #

Good gosh. I can’t believe the Panthers rolled the dice like that. Friggin’ awful.

  20. Wolfy__79 04/28/2011 at 9:49 PM #

newton?? there’s no way i pick this guy.. if i’m the unc colored panthers i’m trading for carson palmer right now! i see this as a big mistake… look at all the defensive studs they could add… or my favorite, trade down so your not once again the laughing stock of the nfl..

have they sold the panthers franchise yet? 😉

I’ve hated the Panthers ever since they landed in Charlotte, knocking my Washington Redskins off the local broadcasts nearly every week. But now, with their bonehead pick of Cam Newton, my hope is again restored that this franchise is doomed, maybe even sooner than I had hoped for.

Newton to me is overrated as a QB. In 2009-10, Newton-led Auburn lost 5 of their last 7 and barely beat Northwestern by 3 in OT in their bowl. Last season, Auburn did go unbeaten, but they were VERY lucky. 7 of their wins were by a TD or less, and they beat Clemson, Kentucky and Miss. State each by only 3. Clemson flat gave it away in OT at Auburn. If they’d lost just one of those games or surely two, I don’t think Newton would’ve been a #1 choice on anyone’s radar. He got there ONLY because Auburn won every game they played. Is he an athlete? Absolutely. Is he a QB? Hummmm…..

The Carolina Panthers play in GD Charlotte, wear blue, and are called Carolina, plus they have the obnoxious Mick Mixon calling their games on radio. They also had Julius Peppers playing for them for awhile. How could ANY self-respecting Wolfpack fan pull for this team?

Like a hard-luck fisherman who’s been trying for years to land the big one, the Panthers have finally succeeded. But with a lockout of some sort sure to disrupt the upcoming season, and with a new coaching staff and rookie year waiting to disrupt the learning adjustment that Newton would have even under ideal conditions, the Panthers’ boat may capsize.

    I can hope!

^^Newton only played one year at Auburn.

  23. PackerInRussia 04/28/2011 at 11:21 PM #

Wow, were there more linemen chosen in the first round than normal? By my count, 12 defensive linemen (none of them Marvin Austin) and 8 offensive linemen. Good for them.

I don’t know where the “Draft Grades” on ESPN come from (from the poll next to it or the “experts”), but Minnesota’s choice of Ponder got an F.

AJ Green’s year out didn’t hurt his stock.

    @ the Ted Larsen post

Did anybody read any of the comments to the Yahoo article? I really wonder about some people when they type comments in front of a computer.

@ the Panthers selecting Cam Newton

He’s better than what they have, but will he become a star? Not if the Panthers do not get some quality with the rest of their picks and through free agency. I guess Armani Edwards really was worth giving up the 33rd pick in the draft cough..cough

@ the Colts, Patriots, Steelers, Packers and Saints

There’s a reason these franchises are doing well, take a look at their picks. I think the Saints and the Patriots pulled off a trade that will help both teams, the Saints get a potentially great NFL player and the Patriots get a couple of picks in compensation. The Panthers will never be a quality team if they operate the way that have been operating in the front office the last few years.

    @ the Panthers Color Scheme

The Hornets left town 9 years ago – Drop the teal and go with a new color scheme. It helped Tampa Bay and New England.
