Good vs. Evil Final Four Open Thread (Coaching Search Free!)

It’s the battle of good in the matinee, with evil featured in the nightcap. (Link here) Assuming you can follow basic logic, this means that the national final is guaranteed to match good vs. evil, to CBS’ delight (2010 featured such a matchup – Butler vs. Duke – and was a ratings bonanza).

There’s not much gray area, either. Butler and VCU are mid-major teams, with likeable players and fresh-faced, young, driven coaches. Guys who have built championship contenders with hard work and none of the advantages that “blue blood” programs enjoy. To root against them is virtually un-American. On the other hand, you have John Calipari (widely viewed as the most crooked active coach in college hoops) and Jim Calhoun (widely regarded as the biggest asshole in college athletics, possibly the entire world). Neither is much for NCAA compliance, despite having all the perks and advantages of high-visibilibility, major conference programs. Calhoun’s disgusting comments after a controversial, nail-biting win over Sendek’s first NCAAT Wolfpack squad elevated the Huskies to my least favorite team, even more hated than Duke and UNC.

I look forward to enjoying the games with the SFN community tonight. However, this thread should be 100% free of coaching search talk – I am taking a much-needed sabbatical from that, and want to simply enjoy good college hoops action. There are plenty of other threads to discuss, freak out, and argue about the coaching search. Thanks in advance for your understanding and basic reading comprehension.

I don’t think so – very well-officiated game – no “anticipation” whistles, and the block/charge being called properly. Both teams are very good and very well-coached. Butler just has the Final Four experience, but without the pedigree to feel like they can coast. That’s a difficult combo for VCU.

But the Rams have another run or two in them.

” …but his partner during ACC season (Mr. Patrick) is horrible. ”

Is it true that the ACC office has begun keeping Mike Patrick in a hermetically sealed container in Greensboro during the week? I’ve heard that they ship him to whichever game he and Elmore are scheduled to do, and they unseal him thirty minutes before game time and give him a scotch and soda (hold the soda and double the scotch).

It might be just a rumor, but it would explain a lot.

Seeing Seth Davis on the screen makes me puke.

Butler seems to be a bit more fundamentally sound, and the big man down low has a big advantage. Excellent basketball.

Is it possible for UConn and UK to both lose tonight?

  5. BJD95 04/02/2011 at 7:30 PM #

This is indeed basketball as it should be played. Very impressed by both teams and coaches. Well done.

I hate to make comparisons that will probably jinx our “mission”, but watching Shaka on the sidelines and his emotions and enthusiasm reminds me of the energy that Jimmy V. had. Sidney had, from time to time, a staccato tempo….but Smart has it ALL the time.

I think that Butler, based on the fact that hey have been here before, will prevail…but I can’t help but pull for VCU….even though I KNOW that a victory tonight will have major financial impact on our situation….and also raise the price of Shaka’s stock by 20%.

Good game. Good energy. Either coach would be great. Stevens probably has had his feet cemented at Butler and would be like moving the Rock of Gibraltor…

” Butler seems to be a bit more fundamentally sound… ”

I think what you’re seeing there is the Butler is the first team that has taken VCU seriously (FSU sort of, but not really) and is defending their perimeter shots rather than clogging up the inside and daring them to shoot over them. Everybody else pretty much expected that VCU’s “luck” from the three point line would fail eventually. Butler isn’t taking that chance and they are actively and aggresively defending VCU (rather than waiting for Cinderella to turn into a pumpkin).

That actually impresses me about Butler and Steven’s coaching. The fact that VCU is now trying to go down low more (as an adjustment) impresses me about Smart’s coaching. It’s nice to see two (apparent) strategist/tactician types go against one another.

Of course the nightcap will be more of the “My paid for players are better than you paid for players” that has become all too familiar.

Butlet just has so many excellent ballhandlers. It’s great to watch how they move the basketball. VCU equally impressive with how they chase and maintain positioning.

Stevens counters with Vanzant getting into the lane. Brilliant coaching both ways. Punch, counterpunch.

The Bulldogs advance to their second straight final. Congratulations to both squads for their role in making this tourney so great for the viewer.

Soooo..we gonna make a play for Smart now???

  12. duggie 04/02/2011 at 8:15 PM #

Since all the media types say our search centers around Shaka, maybe we will have a new coach early next week!

I have Debbie’s email address if you guys want to write her….but I would NOT expect an answer….she is a little “preoccupied”.

I am SURE that her staff is monitoring key indicators and making sure that no REAL info is being released.

I suspect that she has already been talking to several candidates today and will probably have a conversation with SS tomorrow…

    BUT, what do I know….

    OK….question for you guys…

WHO will win the second game and who will be the Champion….

I don’t know if Butler can make the full run….but I’m pulling for them regardless of who wins the second game.

  14. Wufpacker 04/02/2011 at 8:20 PM #

Still not 100% sold on Shaka. The short HC career (only two years as HC) is something that I just can’t get past. That being said, I think his potential upside makes him someone who is worth taking a risk for.

There are still others I’d want to offer and get a firm “no” from first, but if it does get down to Shaka and it’s feasible to get him then I think we could do a lot worse.

  15. Wufpacker 04/02/2011 at 8:22 PM #

I think UK takes the night cap. On Monday I’ll take Butler and however many points they’ll be getting….I actually think they’ll win straight up.

  16. Wulfpack 04/02/2011 at 8:27 PM #

I’ll take the Huskies tonight and Butler for all the marbles.

Since there has been no news, I would have to guess that Yow has been waiting to offer Shaka. I could be wrong but all other options have been available for a few days.

My guess is that Shaka has a text message from Yow asking if he wants to come for $X. If he says he wants to talk that will happen pretty quickly. If not, Yow will pull the trigger on her second choice.

If anyone else was her first choice State wouldn’t be waiting, a coach would be on the way.

I think a fair offer to Shaka would be very much like SM in Zona. A five year deal for $2 million per, $1 million signing bonus and a review for extension after two years. Add a few other terms thrown in for buyout and loyalty bonus after 5 years.

Like all other post this is just a guess but if any other coach was choice one, we would probably know.

would love to see butler win it. if not i would take uconn. that would be 11 straight wins. they’d finish their season with a conf title and an NC after finishing 9th in the BE.

Congratulations Butler. I think its going to be a dogfight Monday (Bulldog vs. Husky) Go underdogs!

  20. Texpack 04/02/2011 at 8:45 PM #

Having been raised to despise KY by my Dad who told stories of Rupp refusing to play Case, I will have a hard time being happy that anybody wins tonight’s second game. Go Butler for sure on Monday night. I do think UK will win comfortably tonight. Their defensive intensity has been excellent in the Tourney.

I think Butler beats whoever in the final. Just so much toughness and basketball IQ. Love watching em play.

Don’t argue with your scenario…..I think that Debbie has been having conversations with several folks…

I don’t know, based on past history and what the Ex VCU coaches have been purportedly received if she will go that high. I would think it would be more in the ballpark of $1.5 – 1.6KK…with NCSU only kicking in about $750K IF he achieves all the “incentive hurdles”. Base will be around $500K Capital Broadcasting will pay $600K for the Coach’s show (Sidney got $500K) and then there will be $250K from a shoe contract…..his share of the “NEW” NCSU contract.

As to a signing bonus….don’t know….that might be an enticement to win him over, but I would think it would be much less than a million…

But again, this is all speculation. I think we could get Marshall for much less, but I would pay more for Smart…

It would not surprise me if any buyout or loyalty clause has a “no fault divorce” clause like Florida and Billy D have… Billy D’s expired on April 1, so we can ASSUME that he is staying in Gainesville…

If we end up with Smart as our man, I hope everyone gets what that ask for, only based on making the Final 4 this year, but his record in the conference, and regular season wins were not that impressive, I would much rather see a coach, whoever it may be, that is a proven winner by Yow’s guidelines of 5 or more years, and if that be the case, Smart is out. I am not saying he will not succeed at State, but again another risk, based on 1 season. But if he is tabbed for the job, as a State fan, he will have my support, until he proves like Sid, he doesn’t deserve it, but as least he does have a more impressive college coaching resume than Sid when he was hired. We will all next week!

Kentucky and UConn each look awful. What a pitiful contrast in skill and polish to the first game.

I hate these State Farm commercials, too. Get fucked, State Farm.
