Good vs. Evil Final Four Open Thread (Coaching Search Free!)

It’s the battle of good in the matinee, with evil featured in the nightcap. (Link here) Assuming you can follow basic logic, this means that the national final is guaranteed to match good vs. evil, to CBS’ delight (2010 featured such a matchup – Butler vs. Duke – and was a ratings bonanza).

There’s not much gray area, either. Butler and VCU are mid-major teams, with likeable players and fresh-faced, young, driven coaches. Guys who have built championship contenders with hard work and none of the advantages that “blue blood” programs enjoy. To root against them is virtually un-American. On the other hand, you have John Calipari (widely viewed as the most crooked active coach in college hoops) and Jim Calhoun (widely regarded as the biggest asshole in college athletics, possibly the entire world). Neither is much for NCAA compliance, despite having all the perks and advantages of high-visibilibility, major conference programs. Calhoun’s disgusting comments after a controversial, nail-biting win over Sendek’s first NCAAT Wolfpack squad elevated the Huskies to my least favorite team, even more hated than Duke and UNC.

I look forward to enjoying the games with the SFN community tonight. However, this thread should be 100% free of coaching search talk – I am taking a much-needed sabbatical from that, and want to simply enjoy good college hoops action. There are plenty of other threads to discuss, freak out, and argue about the coaching search. Thanks in advance for your understanding and basic reading comprehension.

My 9-year-old wins our pick’em pool (and $250) if Kentucky beats UConn tonight. So pulling for Kentucky to lose to someone – anyone – Monday night.

Not to bring up bad memories, but I am going to bring up bad memories.

What were the disgusting comments after the State Uconn game?

  3. JSRy2k 04/02/2011 at 11:50 AM #

Butler winning it all would be fascinating – to see what Brad Stevens, under a long term contract, will continue to do w/ a mid-major program turned powerhouse.

  4. BJD95 04/02/2011 at 11:56 AM #

He said something about how blatant Hodge’s “foul” was, and that he would have formally protested the game had it not been called. Naturally not a word about the body check into the bench that Evtimov took.

God, I’m getting pissed all over again. I hope Cal rips the Huskies to shreds tonight, then loses on Monday. Cal would at least be gracious to the underdog victor.

I would love to see Butler finish what they started last year. They certainly seem to be the “deserving” team in the final 4, but we know that getting what you seem to deserve in sports is against the odds. I guess that’s what makes it so sweet when an individual or a team beats those odds. Go Butler.

Thanks for the coaching search break BJD…will be interesting to relax and watch the show..especially with our different “angles” of interest in Butler and VCU……

UK over UConn for sure even with the history going back to Rupp and Case.
Calipari is a sleaze, Calhoun is an azzhat. As BJD said at least Cal wouldn’t be such a poor winner.

As for the good side of things I’m really not sure which team is my emotional pick – both have good stories and I hope the winner cleans up the floor Monday night.

BJD, Calhoun actually bitched after each 2nd rd game against us. The 2002-03 tourny ended with Hodge fouling Caron Butler on a 3. The foul call was correct, but I remember the whistle coming late. Sendek should’ve thrown a fit, but alas, he hated emotions.

He complained again a couple years later on Hodge’s and-1 (our program’s #1 play in 20+ years BTW), arguing that Gay didn’t foul him. He’s a slimeball & a cheater. Any way both of them could lose??

I agree that Hodge did get a tiny bit of Butler’s hand – but if you call that, you MUST call the body check of Evtimov.

I was soooooo happy that Sendek got his revenge a few years later. As much as I wanted him to move on, I never felt more positive towards him than during and after each matchup with Calhoun.

Just seeing the headlines read VCU or Butler, national champion, would be such a breath of fresh air from the big, power-house schools claiming the title every year.

As the mid-major or the underdog has consistently taken out the higher seed more frequently as this past decade has rolled by, i’ve noticed the terms ‘darlings of the dance’ and ‘cinderella’ don’t seem to pack the same punch and are also becoming less used terms.

I wish everyone would quit ragging on poor Cal and let him enjoy his first Final Four.

I wish the goods were matched against the evils tonight and could then play for the NCAA championship on Monday. I am taking Butler and Kentucky tonight and Butler on Monday.

Calhoun has been proven to run a very corrupt program by the NCAA, and the penalty is that he cannot coach several of UConn’s big east games next year. Wow, I am definintely worried that BMFD and UNX will be cleared of all wrongdoing, and I am still scratching my head over what happened to us in 1990 over some players selling some shoes and tickets and in 1973 over an assistant coach(Biedenbach) playing in a pickup game with a signed recruit(Thompson).

  13. Sweet jumper 04/02/2011 at 12:45 PM #

If KY has to vacate this final four, Calamari will have pulled off the ultimate trifecta–three final fours with three different teams and all three vacated. If that happens he deserves a long vacation!

  14. rtpack24 04/02/2011 at 2:28 PM #

Cal facing new allegations for NCAA violations came out today and I believe there is more to come. Also, recruit involved in UConn’s violations came out today and said Calhoun lied to the NCAA. They are what is wrong with college basketball and VCU and Butler are what is right with the sport.

  15. tractor57 04/02/2011 at 2:58 PM #

rtpack as far as we know. Agreed they seem to be good guys (especially when compared to Darth Vader and Darth Maul) and hopefully they really are what they seem.

When I think of hell, I imagine an endless loop of Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg, reciting and laughing at their own horrid puns.

    “Shaka the world!” Hahahaha

  17. WV Wolf 04/02/2011 at 6:12 PM #

I can still hear Calhoun’s “Butlah was hammahed” on the touch foul on Caron Butler.

It’s a shame they don’t let Gus Johnson call the Final Four.

I wouldn’t’ mind having Smart as our coach. That fast paced tempo along with an aggressive attacking defense would be fun to watch with the guys we have on our roster…

  19. BJD95 04/02/2011 at 6:20 PM #

Totally agree, WV. Gus and Len Elmore are a very good pairing.

  20. eas 04/02/2011 at 6:21 PM #

Shaka style play would be fun to watch with our roster.

  21. packalum44 04/02/2011 at 6:28 PM #

These are two great teams going at it. But I gotta tell you, VCU is playing harder. They may not win, but not for lack of effort. Butler is getting ALL the calls.

Can’t help but pull for VCU 😉

  22. Lunatic Fringe 04/02/2011 at 6:33 PM #

Honestly, I have never had a problem with Elmore doing games, but his partner during ACC season (Mr. Patrick) is horrible.

I continue to be impressed at how calm & controlled the Butler team is on the court. VCU took their Mohammad Ali knockout swing. Butler seemed to shake it off and came back for more.

  23. packalum44 04/02/2011 at 6:45 PM #

Butler has more talent not to mention experience. I like Shaka and VCU though. Last second shot decides this game.

  24. packalum44 04/02/2011 at 6:46 PM #

Not sure why the refs and NCAA are favoring Butler. You’d think with no blue bloods there would be little incentive to fix this one.

  25. packalum44 04/02/2011 at 6:50 PM #

Amazing how these coaches got their teams to the Final Four. If I recall, the greatest Cinderella story ever played in a major conference and had several players drafted into the NBA. Wonder what player in this game will get drafted 🙂
