Blowing Smoke?

Sports Illustrated is reporting

(VCU) Athletic director Norwood Teague said in a text message Sunday that neither North Carolina State nor Missouri, both looking for head coaches, have contacted him about talking to Smart.

Last week, Teague said he planned to sit down with Smart early this week and make an aggressive push to keep him on the Rams sideline.

Of course, doesn’t Teague’s denial contradict a previous report about Missouri contacting VCU about Smart?

At this point I don’t know what to think. Why would Missouri get Haith without a strong push towards Smart or Marshall? Did State really send Smart an offer that Mizzu could not match? Is Lee really the AD at Mizzu hiding behind the curtain. Haith is such a ball-less hire.

Very interesting. I can’t wait until we hire the new coach, so that we can try to piece together what really happened during the search.

“Piece together” is all we’re likely to have. The search details are tight now, and they will remain so after the new head coach is announced. Don’t expect that we’ll know a lot more than we do now. Other than the new coach’s name….

Mizzou’s board, “Tigerboard.com” is in full blown MELTDOWN. I just hope that we’re not doing the same later in the week.

Prediction: Smart doesn’t even get an offer from Yow.

    xpistou,

I’m starting to get that feeling too.

The Haith thing is very odd. I never saw that one coming. Miami people seem to be thrilled and Missouri fans seem to be upset. I can’t see that one working out well in the long run.

The Haith hiring looks eerily like the Jeff Bzdelik hire at WFU. I would expect similar results.

Isn’t Shaka Smart’s wife from Miami? Or, maybe is was Anthony Grant’s wife?

Probably Anthony Grant, he worked at a HS in Miami, probably met her then.

VCU’s AD stated in an interview that SS understands the value of being at a basketball school so I doubt he would even entertain the idea of going to Miami.

A part of me hopes that we never offer Smart and that we get Stevens, Barnes or another big named coach that several of the national media writers scoffed at us for thinking we have a chance at them.

Some of the national media guys are the biggest tools ever and they’ve really shown their ‘tails’ during this search. I’ve been disgusted with their condescending and smug attitudes about NC State. I would love nothing more than for Yow to make a hire that would have them backtracking. ‘NC State has been turned down left and right? Oh what I meant to say is…, NC State is on their 9th and 10th option?, Use your brain people!, You should bed Sendek to take the job back’

It makes me want to vomit. Are we really suppose to be satisfied with where we are? I thought you play to win the game, every game. I hate this attitude that we are suppose to accept losing.

I like smart dont get me wrong. There is just part of me that wants them to eat as much crow as possible after this search is over.

So far the biggest winner of the 2010 coaching carousel is not a college but Frank Haith.

I’m not expecting them to make a hire this week, but it will (hopefully) be great if they do. At this point, everything is speculation. Speculation from us, the local media, the national media… nobody really knows what’s going on except Debbie Yow’s circle of trust.

  16. jbark 04/04/2011 at 9:58 AM #

If we landed an A-list coach, the national media will not backtrack. The narrative will change to “a-list coach made a huge mistake or took a step down.”

“I’m not expecting them to make a hire this week, but it will (hopefully) be great if they do”

I am. There is no reason to wait any longer.

Bedding Herb, now that is funny!

Just remember, Debbie Yow is in charge, not Lee. 5 years ago, I’d be chewing the bark off a tree by now. I actually feel almost serene at this point. Or maybe that’s what the past 20 years have done to me.

lol @wolfbrew sometimes my fingers have a mind of their own. It should read beg.

@jbark You’re probably right. But it would still feel good because you know inside how they feel.

I too am weary of these smug, smirking, puffy pundits who spare no opportunity to gratuitously bad mouth NC State. Why do they have it in for us?

I kinda hope we hire someone different than the last 3. Think about it. The last 3 were all “nice” guys bordering on Mr. Milk Toast. I hope the next coach ain’t so “nice”. These college players don’t need a pal. They need somebody to push them and get in their face when they get slack.

I hope the next coach works on the refs like the blue coaches do. Heck, I’d like to see a T once in a while or maybe a chair thrown in disgust. I’d for sure show up if there was the prospect of witnessing a good old fashioned meltdown every now and then. That’d give ’em plenty to write about in their newspaper.

But several credible sources did report that Mike (Lee Fowler is my HERO) Alden left a VM for Norwood Teague and that VCU NEVER returned the calls….so MA went south, literally, and did a deal.

Mike Alden is in the running for the 2011 Lee Fowler Outstanding Coaching Search award. Please vote for him at the National Association of Buffoonn Athletic Director’s site.

The KC paper is a bit “unraveled” this morning and the big $$ donors are miffed. The Board of Currators (now isn’t that a spiffy name) will PROBABLY OK it tonight….they may well discuss OTHER personnel issues such as a starting a search for Mike’ successor….THIS would be a GREAT opportunity for our own LF…and we would then quit paying him money to drink beer and drive his boat…

Calm DOWN FOLKS…..next thing you will be wanting Pete Gaudet….whereever he is….to take over….BobLeeSays.com brought him up…..maybe Matt D or whoever…

NOTE…please do NOT drink a six pack of 5 Hour Energy Drink before you post….

    Yard work calls…..

Is there a betting line in Vegas for the next NCSU coach? Wonder who the odds on favorite is right now?

  23. OldWuf 04/04/2011 at 10:27 AM #

    Smart: Please, No.

  24. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 04/04/2011 at 10:29 AM #

The only reason I would want Barnes at this point would be as a bridge candidate with the hopes that in 4 or 5 years Archie is a winner a wants to come home to State. Barnes looks tired.

Would it be possible that Yow was in contact with BD last week it was to ask him to help Smart with representation? Talks between Smart and State are not handled by Yow and Smart but the firm and his reps. Yow could of asked Billy to recommend an agent that State’s firm could work with. I doubt Smart would of gone into the tournament needing the kind of agent he needed after weekend two.

No reason Smart can’t be with his family and the contracts be negotiated at the same time.

I’m sure NC State and VCU are respecting the personal time needed by Smart but if he is the hire, the business side is running at full force right now and until the name is on the contract.

I bet these negotiations would make a great movie. Probably pretty cut-throat and what many would be considered to be poor taste, but college basketball is BIG business.
