Blowing Smoke?

Sports Illustrated is reporting

(VCU) Athletic director Norwood Teague said in a text message Sunday that neither North Carolina State nor Missouri, both looking for head coaches, have contacted him about talking to Smart.

Last week, Teague said he planned to sit down with Smart early this week and make an aggressive push to keep him on the Rams sideline.

Of course, doesn’t Teague’s denial contradict a previous report about Missouri contacting VCU about Smart?

The current chances, in my uninformed opinion:

    Smart: 50%
    Marshall: 25%
    Cronin: 5%
    Field: 20%

Didn’t the grandfather die on Tuesday? Good lord, haven’t they buried him yet? That line from “Poor Judd is Daid” from “Oklahoma” comes to mind–“It’s summer and we’re running out of ice…”

Right now, everything (new media, dead tree media, miscellaneous MSM, e-mailed rumors) is almost certainly being pulled from someone’s ass (at the original sourcing level). Nobody knows shit.

Monte Towe has a 10 percent chance. Just say’in. Seriously I think one should consider the possibilty that Yow will look beyond these guys that we think are it. She wants someone with a track record that indicates they will win. But then she has to look at all the other things too like can they manage a program academically, get along with others in the athletic department, and deal effectively with the press.

    Shaka has withdrawn…..on to number 2 & 3….

Anybody else see this anywhere else….

I would think that DG would NOT report this if it were not substantiated…..he would be (or maybe alreay is depending on your opininion of him) the laughing stock of the Triangle….

    Just reporting….not commenting….

I’m not sure anymore that Smart would take the job if offered. The City of Richmond and area are really embracing him. Author and VCU alum David Baldacci wrote this open letter: http://ht.ly/4sBYR. And VCU alumni have started this website: http://saveshakasmart.com/.

I’m not naive enough to believe those things alone trump a big-money offer from a big-time school, but VCU is working hard to improve his salary there, and that, accompanied by such an obvious outpouring of affection and support, coupled as well with the fact that VCU was the school that gave him his big break, may buy a few more years of allegiance from him.

If he believes in his abilities and believes himself that this run was no fluke, he doesn’t have to be in a hurry. He can hone his skills some more in an excellent mid-major conference, and offers will continue to roll in season after season.

The risk is that he doesn’t maintain this level of success and his stock drops, but there’s still a positive there – better for your stock to drop in relative obscurity than on a grand stage. Makes it easier to bounce back maybe.

Blowing smoke? Why the hell would we want Smart, who only finished 4th in a mid major conference and was ‘lucky’ with his players 3’s, and who blamed his loss on his players and the refs? Great character!!

Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News is also reporting that Shaka Smart turned down N.C. State. The article also stated that NCSU has already been rejected by Sean Miller, Mark Turgeon, Josh Pastner, and Rick Barnes.

    May I post now?

It’s reported on ESPN.com that Teague released a comment saying “Smart is staying!!!” I kid you not.

That guy’s a clown, and if I was Smart, I’d be pissed.

VCW spokesperson says Yow offered Smart the job, but got turned down. Another Fowler move.

Does this mean we might have to settle for less than even Smart. I sure pray not!

    Armstrong from WTVD tweeted earlier:

“Spoke briefly with NCSU Assoc AD Chris Kingston. Told him VCU AD says offer made to Smart. Kingston: ‘don’t know where that’s coming from'”

Not sure if we offered Smart or not. But at least we’re denying it.

Some are saying that with SO MANY “rejections” happening at once, that it’s very possible that we’re withdrawing any potential offers due to having our guy already.

Of course NCSU hasn’t contacted VCU. The search firm has.
