UNC Fan(graduate?) George Stephens upset with NC State students

There was an interesting letter to the editor in today’s N&O.

Some N.C. State University students waved their middle fingers as their greeting to the Carolina basketball players at the Feb. 23 game. I went to Carolina, but I have invested more volunteer time in State than in my own school. What some of its students did makes me wonder if I made a good investment.

George Stephens

Raleigh

Apparently, George who attended(graduated?) UNC missed this photo of some of his fellow classy Heel fans(bandwagon?) in the RBC Center last Wednesday evening:

I fully expect another letter from George to the N&O stating that he doesn’t appreciate the UNC fan’s action in this picture wondering if he made a good choice in attending UNC since fan behavior is such an important issue to him.

We will be waiting, George.

What must he think of Duke fans *gasp, or the stick it in chant VT does. Perhaps he needs to be reminded of the UNC fans screaming vulgarities at the Md bus. I think his criticisms should be directed towards those new fangled kids of today on their interwebs and celly phones.

I fully expect the typical UNX response….
    1. Deny
    2. Excuses
    3. Reasons why the excuses are valid
    4. Deny the denial
    5. Something about “not our rival anyways”

Wait. What? College kids sometimes act a fool?

Of more concern to me, I’d be highly interested in knowing what was being said between Barnes and Scott Wood that set Wood into a fouling, frustrated frenzy.

Also, along George’s lines, what are his thoughts about Henson who’s arms alone are 7’5” blocking then taunting Harrow. He had plenty of other unsportsmanlike behavior. But fans will be fans, what are your thoughts on those players actions Mr. Stephens?

At least some students have passion to show up to our games and have hate for a non-rival. More than I can say.

Does the N&O print every letter that is sent in?

  7. ZZ 03/01/2011 at 2:09 PM #

The N&O is garbage reporting anyways. Always has been.

A lot of people are rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. It is notthing new. People need to stop getting bent out of shape about it.

I much prefer the middle finger over the rocks and bricks hurled by UNC students at the marching band leaving the State/UNC football game in 2005 in Chapel Hell (which we lost, mind you). Can’t be classy losers, can’t be classy winners…

I was one of the trombone section leaders in ’04. That was not a fun experience nuclearwolf07.

Some fans are rude in general, no matter where or if they even attended a particular school. As a NCSU atudent in the early 70’s I remember driving over to Chapel Hill just to see tha campus because I had heard that it was beautiful. Of course I had a NCSU decal on my back window and tag on the front of my car. I can not begin to tell you how many UNC students shouted profanities at me, shot me the bird or both. That was not even during either basketball or football season but was during the David Thompson and Lou Holtz eras when the Pack was kicking the Heels butts consistentlyin both sports. It was that experience that made me a life long member of the ABC club – Anybody But Carolina!!!

^ Difference being I’m assuming you didn’t go immediately bitching to the N&O to write an editorial about it (which probably would never have been published anyway, mind you).

Honestly, why do people even bother to write crap like this? Nobody gives a damn. Carolina has plenty of classless idiots, as do we. There really is not much of a difference. Carolina just has more of the whiny, arrogant docuhenozzles who bitch about it to the local paper.

All Mr. Stephens really does in this editorial is confirm where his true loyalties lie. Lame attempt to hide them with his “I have invested more volunteer time at State than my own school”. Is that supposed to make us feel bad? Take your volunteer time and shove it is what I say.

Dear God – please don’t let us be Carolina’s Friday ACCT game. Please.

Or how about when UNC loses to Maryland… 0:04 into this video:

    ‘Go back to the ghetto!’

    Yeah, real classy.

UNC-cheat always talks about class, but rarely shows any.

  16. tann84 03/01/2011 at 8:51 PM #

    lol @mafpack,

I just pity UNC fans because their so pathetic. They are pathetic losers and winners. Every fan base has their rude fans but UNC has the most pious fans out of any fan base I have ever seen, so entitled. I love seeing their crushed little faces after a loss. I just hope we get to a point in our program where we are making them tell us to go ‘back to the ghetto’ after a loss on a regular bases. In our case it might be back to the farm.

They never act like guest. They have the attitude that I paid for this seat, I’ll be the biggest condom holder in the building.

Don’t worry, we won’t be playing on Friday.

Who “volunteers” for their school’s rival? College students demonstrating rude behavior. Who knew?

  20. runwiththepack 03/01/2011 at 11:22 PM #

    Silver Wolf,

Your experiences are far from unique and rare. It’s part of why I, too, am an ABC’er since the N&O’s handling of the Valvano “scandal”.

I can’t count the number of cheap shots the N&O has taken in this way over the past 35+ years via letters like this. Ever see a N&O letter go the other direction? Don’t think i’ve seen a single one. Anyone?

I’ve been to two football games at Kenan. Not surprisingly, groups of blue boys, upon seeing us old bald guys wearing red in our Oldsmobile, flipped their birds at us, shouting obscenities about NCSU – BOTH TIMES! 2 FOR 2.

Big deal. Or, should I send a letter to the N&O?!

I made it to one game in the Dean Dome and a couple guys right behind me were screaming – I mean screaming at the top of their lungs – leaning into my ear. I had to cover my head.

I could go on and on, going back to neighborhood thug heel fans, but I actually have several good friends with UNC backgrounds who aren’t like that. That leaves the other 800,000 of them, though.

It’s hard to believe that the N&O is run by such arrogant sphincter muscles that they actually believe that such rudeness is one way. It’s telling, and there’s no knowing how much our “sister school” crowd has smeared us behind our backs – or in front, whatever – over the years.

  21. gcpack 03/02/2011 at 12:08 AM #

nuclearwolf07 & PackManSJP please tell us more about what happened to the band in Chapel Hill. I have never heard a single thing about any physical violence. Why is that? Why is it that I have to first hear about this years later from just a couple of those involved?

    Please tell me(us) the details.

If this is real that bricks were thrown at the band by UNC fans then how is it that I never saw any reports from the media?

    Imagine that!

    Dearest George Stephens,

I would like to apologize on behalf of the Wolfpack Nation.
It seems we have not behaved appropriately not only on the occasion of which you recanted for us but for several of the past few years. Since my days at NC State ’84, we as a Fan Base have become more civilized and accepting of what was once intolerable. I look back on the days of Old when no Light Blue shade was left “Un-Heckled”, derided and left completely humiliated at being associated with unc. In the future we will do our best to bring back our Originality and Shaming Harassment in honor of your complaints. I hope that with today’s technology that the students can come together and lead the rest of our fan base in making your visit to a game on NC State Property as uncomfortable as possible and that you will not ever return. Thanks for pointing out our deficiencies in that area, we will begin training immediately for Football season! If you merely need to smear arrogance juices all over yourself please travel no further than Durham County…

    Someone who can’t get “hired”?

Guys, We are playing into N&O’s hands.

They put this letter out to rile up NCSU fans which therefore increases hits on the website and could sell more papers(in the short term). They could be doing this for the muhla! It’s like the 1 writer back in the summer or fall that wrote about how unc are like turds floating in a punch bowl(?) His article was the most popular one for a month!

  25. WolfWall.com 03/02/2011 at 9:52 AM #

I think the biggest issue here is that SO many of you subscribe to the N&O. Cancel your subscriptions, ignore them, and maybe we can speed up the death that they are destined to reach in the (hopefully near) future.
