Continue Relaxing, People

There will be plenty of time after the hire is made to score the search, and to try to piece together what actually happened. For the next 36-48 hours (at least – I use that timeframe because it’s the next “benchmark” – i.e., when everyone will travel to Texas for the Final Four weekend then), just relax and remember a few things:

1) We are not being publically rejected by anyone. No, I don’t care about what some jackass tweeted about Josh Pastner, etc.
2) Nobody really knows anything (which means that all we are discussing is our semi-educated guesses as to whether or not the continued radio silence is a good or bad thing).
3) Debbie Yow explicitly told us that this would be a very quiet – and probably lengthy – process.

If we (or you) try to parse, substantiate, and/or refute every snide sports radio remark and “tweet” out there…we/you will go completely batshit crazy. Don’t overreact to any “news” – positive or negative, no matter whether it supports your own personal theory/guess as to what’s happening behind closed doors. If things do drag on into the weekend and even next week – more interaction between sportswriters, agents, coaches, and hangers-on will just increase the noise level. Take it in stride.

Also, please remember that everyone in the Wolfpack community has frayed nerves and is thus pretty short-tempered. Take a time-out before you light into somebody. Use some discretion and self-awareness. Don’t poke a finger in anyone else’s eye, and don’t do anything to turn SFN into a piss-filled toddlers’ sandbox like so many other forums out there.

Now, I bid you good night. Time for some ice cream and mindless TV. Away from the f-ing computer.

Was Debbie suprised she had to let Sid go? I don’t believe so,than why did she not have people lined up to take over? Shaka was not heard of until 3 weeks ago! I hope everyone is right around here but frankly to be left with Smart and Marshall is nothing great.

  2. VaWolf82 03/31/2011 at 8:26 AM #

The donors are willing to pay it privately, but this cannot happen for legal reasons.

I don’t believe this for a second. UNC had no trouble getting Butch and Roy’s multi-million dollar salaries approved. Why would State’s situation be any different?

  3. Hamlet 03/31/2011 at 8:32 AM #

^ Thank you, VaWolf! Finally, some common sense around here.

  4. Statefan1998 03/31/2011 at 8:35 AM #

^Agree with both of the two previous post. It is not the money, it is the fact that no one wants this job.

  5. albunde6 03/31/2011 at 8:36 AM #

Yea, Fernandopacker gets it. This is what I have been trying to convey to the readers on this site. We should not be here.

  6. graywolf 03/31/2011 at 8:39 AM #

BOT at work again(st) NC State again? That would not surprise me in the least.

  7. Hamlet 03/31/2011 at 8:53 AM #

Repeat after me: Timing is EVERYTHING in a coaching search.

This has absolutely nothing to do with money or coaches not wanting our job.

    Thanks again, Lee.

Most people knew the big names were long shots at best. Something we shouldn’t have considered? Of course not. But longshots nonetheless. It is no surprise if we’re down to the mid-majors, but again, anybody who believes that that is reason to 1) hate the coach, 2) hate the AD, or 3) give up on the Pack really shouldn’t be wearing red in the first place. We have a rich history, and we’re a great destination…but that doesn’t mean that all the available big-name guys think the same thing. So if they don’t, we say screw them and we get a new guy to show them up.

And if new guy doesn’t work, we thank him respectfully, we show that we’re reasonable, and we move on, hoping somebody who knows how good a place this is is available.

And again, there’s something more satisfying about doing everything with the guy we found instead of doing it with someone else’s guy. (Though I would not hesitate for a second to have Miller or Donovan up in here.)

I have to agree with fernando and others here as well. Needing a HC for Bball should not have been a suprise and DY should have had him wrapped up tight by now.
@ mike how can you say no one has turned us down publicily on one hand and on the other hand say we made to right offers ,they were taken and than declined?

  10. ADVENTUROO 03/31/2011 at 9:01 AM #

    OK Folks,

Not to make disparaging remarks or to cast doubt on what other have said or alluded to here…..I present the following FACTS….

    http://alumni.unc.edu/print.aspx?sid=4967

Coach Williams contract signed in 07 through the 14/15 Season was as follows:

    Total Estimated Annual – $2,600,000
    UNC Base – $325,000
    Learfield Communications – $400,000
    Nike – $500,000
    Rams Club – $1,300,000 (average)

So, if Huck can get money from the Rams Club, I suspect we can. If you recall, when Jimmy V was crucified, the UNIVERSITY (St. Monteith) RENIGGED on every friggin $$. The WPC lived up to their contract and paid him whatever he was owed for UNJUST Termination. That is a fact that he stated in his audio book and was also published in the book….Lifetime Contract – Declared Dead.

Here is a little tidbit that I came across also….

    http://ncstatebrickyard.blogspot.com/2007/12/interesting-salary-database.html

Follow that link and you will get to the ACC FB Coach’s contracts…

Now THAT, if you click on the contracts and read them, is some interesting stuff.

    http://ncstatebrickyard.blogspot.com/2007/12/interesting-salary-database.html

SO, if all the comments that I heard, privately and publicly, are correct….SOME of the more affluent members of the WPC were miffed at Herbie leaving….SOME of the equally more affluent members were miffed about Sidney’s performance…..take those two factions, and there should be enough money to “assist” Debbie Yow in adding more layers to the cake and some really flavorful icing..

Whether of not we have been publicly or privately turned down is of little consequence here. I DOUBT it was about $$’s or the lack there of. I have a “bucket” list that includes a take off (as well as a landing) on an aircraft carrier…as did Lou Holz Holtz. He got his by wining the national championship for ND. I am a seasoned citizen and doubt that I will be able to check that one off….best I might do would be to get some pilot to take a vial of my ashes with him.

BUT, the item is still on my Bucket List…..So, Debbie Yow probably had a list of coaches that she would LOVE (and probably had a shot at) to have….she is methodically working her way down the list….but it did NOT stop at 3.

As many of you, who have heckled me, know….MY impecable sources, as well as others here, said that we had requested clearance to talk to Mark Few. I think HE was more attainable than SM or BD. But, we will NEVER know unless someone hacks Debbie’s computer.

SO…relax. She is going to ball and will have her dance card FULL….and we shall see which of the handsome princes she brings home to introduce to the family…

And I, for one, would be quite happy to see Mr. Smart on her arm at the WPC Coach’s Caravan in a few weeks.

  11. Statefan1998 03/31/2011 at 9:05 AM #

Enough with the history. History is for losers who have not done anything recently. We cling to history because there is nothing else. The championship of 1983 is rapidly approaching 30 years, it was a great memory for some that were alive/old enough. Most fans under 35 have seen nothing to cheer about. Lets face it, this is not a great job, it is an average job in a good basketball conference, sandwiched between two schools that have lapped us at least 5 times.

  12. ADVENTUROO 03/31/2011 at 9:12 AM #

    SFN..

    PLEASE FIX THE EDIT FUNCTION..

What I MEANT to say, if Huck can get $$’s from the Rams Club, then WE, the mighty pack, would have the same privileges from the WPC…and we have had such in the past.

    Final comment,

I agree with others about Coach Lowe. I supported him and would not have made a change. The deed is done and I am at peace with it. Debbie handled it with class and style and respect….that put her MUCH higher on my list. I am now in her corner.

Please do NOT bash Coach Lowe. He had a rough row to hoe and was hamstrung by the way Herbie recruited and also the lack of REAL talent. Coach Lowe did not “come around” as fast as I would liked….but with his personal issues…..that is really sad and it is history.

He did give it his best shot. He did leave the cupboard FULL of talent, which will be a MAJOR ASSET to the NEW COACHING Search.

He did make some heavy personal sacrifices to come here and the dedication that he put in to the Coach’s Job took an unbelievable toll on his life and family. So, PLEASE be respectful and refrain from petty remarks….I sometimes wish there was an IGNORE function here (as you might also) so that I would avoid certain BM’s comments.

  13. Howler 03/31/2011 at 9:17 AM #

This time around, it is the media going nuts; shouldn’t be us. And I am loving it. DY can stretch this out for a couple more weeks, and I am fine with it.

  14. albunde6 03/31/2011 at 9:30 AM #

Adventuro0 has given us the data on Roy. This is how the jobs are structured for A list prospect.

    Sid had Salary of X
    Shoe of Y
WPC of Z for a total of (XYZ).

It may be the top of the list would have demanded (XYZ)times 3. If we had it then pay it, make the anouncement, and we all lived happily ever after.

I have my A list, and B list as most of you do. We are not making the decision, but we can always have an opinion.

  15. ADVENTUROO 03/31/2011 at 9:55 AM #

Not to belabor this, but Sidney’s Capital Broadcasting contract was $500,000. I do NOT know about a Shoe contract.

BUT, I do RECALL a reporter asking the “Shoe” question at the Presser and DY made the comment that she was “reviewing” all the logo stuff and shoes and uniforms that it would be in the equation….so the lady has covered some bases here….

  16. hellfishtat 03/31/2011 at 10:10 AM #

Try to remember SFN is a very small percentage of ALL State fans. The Rick Barnes v Shaka Smart poll has less than 1800 votes. That equates to less than 9% of.a.capacity crowd at the RBC Center.

  17. albunde6 03/31/2011 at 10:13 AM #

Thanks again, Adventuroo. Just want the readers and posters to look at the logic of our situation. This hire is big business. It is recreation for most of us, but a big deal for University and the state of NC.

From a business perspective, it is ok for UNX to hope we do a bad job with this search and hire. The right hire could hurt their business. The wrong hire builds a bigger empire for this giant.

I have posted that I feel that business techniques are not being applied to this search. I have “remained calm, all is well”. Just don’t want this to 4 or 5 weeks to come to a hire we should have made in week 2.

From a business perspective, fast and decisive is better than long and uncertain.

I have also ask for perspective as to where we think this job ranks. By salary, by prestige (conference), by quality of life for coach and family.
Are we a top 25 job? Top 50 or Top 100. I feel it is a top 5 in quality of life, to 25 in pay, top 50 in prestige. So what can I expect to get for my money?

  18. wevaugha 03/31/2011 at 10:21 AM #

I believe everyone has now accepted the reality of Smart of Marshall being our next coach. A lot of space on all of the NCSU boards over the past few years has been devoted to describing exactly how terrible a job Lee Fowler did as AD. Although none of the potential candidates mentioned has turned down the job publicly, those of us who have been following this search have to realize by now that we were turned down by our top choices. Otherwise there would have been an announcement before now. For all of the negative sentiment towards LF, he did at least have Calipari in Raleigh. I was as excited as everyone else after DY’s press conference, but as of now I can’t see how this search was a significant improvement over the last.

I will be somewhat excited by a Shaka hire, but I don’t see the curve of success changing very quickly.

  19. highstick 03/31/2011 at 10:23 AM #

1998, you’re sort of a “what have you done for me lately” type person, aren’t you?

  20. newt 03/31/2011 at 10:47 AM #

    We don’t need history.

NC State recruited at a top-5 level last year and averages top-15. We have an administration that supports athletics. We have a rolicking good fan base, a fancy home court, top-notch practice facilities and offices, and a truckload of money to pay.

A good coach should expect to be able to sustain a perennial top-25 program just by being solid, while living in the vibrant Piedmont of the beautiful State of North Carolina. The new coach can have a mountain home and a beach house within a couple of hours in either direction.

Win something, and your ego will be stroked more than you can stand.

That’s what we offer. It’s all good.

Seems like everybody has turned down N.C. State except @dickiev. Can’t think of a better hire than Shaka Smart at this point.

I suspect he knows as much as I which is nothing.

I’ve independently confirmed story from @sportsbybrooks that N.C. State contacted Josh Pastner with offer “north of 2 million.” He said no.

  24. BeVeryAfraid 03/31/2011 at 11:05 AM #

I’ll give anybody three picks and I’ll take the field. Not sure DY would even take that bet right now.

  25. Hungwolf 03/31/2011 at 11:07 AM #

Keep in mind Final Four gives the AD a chance to talk and/or interview people without the whole world knowing by bringing them to Raleigh or having people tracking a plane. I can see how she would want to make the rounds at the Final Four before making a hire, you never know who might approach her in showing interest in the position. This is not her first rodeo! Les Robinson once told me if you’re Ad and you looking a coach, Final Four is a great place to start.
