Dave Glenn reports Barnes staying at Texas & recap of Tuesday’s wild Internet speculation

Note: Some of this entry was written last night. If you want to go straight to Dave Glenn’s Wed. update on our search, then go here and read the rest of the entry later.

______________________________________________________________

This entire entry could be a big waste of time because at this point we haven’t been able to verify the truth of any of the speculation we are about to make or the rumors we are about to point you towards. While it would be no surprise to SFN that Rick Barnes would have interest in coming to NC State, information on the search has been scarce and extremely hard to come by.

At times over the last few weeks we have thought we had a good feel for what was happening and the direction of the search. Of course, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that guys like Sean Miller who previously coached at NC State and Rick Barnes would eventually be targets of Debbie Yow. The order and the timing of how Yow dealt with the “big name” candidates was uncertain with several of these name coaches still in the NCAA tournament while at least one(Rick Barnes) was eliminated this past Sunday.

Yesterday afternoon was the first spike in Internet speculation that something was officially happening with the search. There are many critics of message boards, but as I pointed out with the UNC scandal very often big stories break on message boards and very often random posters on the Internet have the real story way before the media.

-Yesterday on Twitter, Dave Glenn of the ACC Sports Journal stated that he would have an update on the NC State coaching search posted shortly. He already had a story on the GT coaching search that we linked here.

-On Tuesday, I listened to Dave Glenn educate local callers that it was completely realistic that Barnes and Miller were candidates stating that he has known both coaches for 10 years and talked with them many times. Despite callers saying it was unrealistic and that NC State fans should be talking about mid-majors, Glenn was adamant that as long as Miller and Barnes haven’t said no then they are still candidates. If you will remember, then last week Glenn detailed how Uncle Jed bungled the coaching search five years ago especially in how we handled the courtship of Rick Barnes. Without Fowler in charge of the search 5 years ago, then it is likely the Sidney Lowe era never happens.

-On Monday, a normally reliable poster started this thread stating that Rick Barnes was to be in Raleigh at some point in the near future. This seemed to spark additional rumors about Barnes including potential sitings at the airport and on campus. In the age of cell phones, it is surprising that if Barnes really was on campus that someone didn’t snap a picture or shoot a video verifying his presence in Raleigh.

-Packpride runs their profile of Rick Barnes Tuesday afternoon. Coincidence? Then Packpride hosts a “Premium Chat” at 2:40 pm Tuesday which leads to more speculation and the spreading of additional rumors on Twitter and message boards about Barnes.

-Late yesterday afternoon/early evening www.packinsider.com posted this update:

We are unsure of what exactly that meeting was about, but the source, who previously said that he didn’t think Barnes was interested in the NC State position, has switched his tone and is now claiming that the current Texas coach is indeed looking very closely at the Wolfpack opening. Again, this is a source on the Barnes side which is how we were able to obtain this information.

*Update: To clarify, our source said nothing about Barnes NOT being in Raleigh. So if he was here yesterday or this morning, we don’t know about it. However, we’ve been told that he was not here this afternoon.

Read the full update. There is some Sean Miller information as well.

-This past Saturday, SFN ran with this entry on Rick Barnes. which was prompted by rumors on our message boards over the weekend of an offer to Barnes:

OK Rick said post it…I just wanted to be sure this site wasn’t like some others that want to keep everything hush hush because they’re scared it’ll cause anothe debacle like the last search if info slips out.

I was told by someone very close to the basketball team that we offered Rick Barnes yesterday. I hope he accepts! I was also told that C. J. Leslie will most likely not return next season. He most likely will declare for the draft but a transfer is also possible.

-What ever happened to Tuesday’s update from www.accsports.com and Dave Glenn? It was delayed until this morning:

DavidGlennShow David Glenn Show
@
@BKG1975 it will be in the morning…as we said on the show today things change all the time during these searches. I’ll tweet the link.

-Finally, Dave Glenn’s update just appeared minutes ago:

Arizona’s Sean Miller and Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart are among those who remain factors in the N.C. State coaching search, but Texas coach Rick Barnes no longer is in the mix, according to multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.

“We all know this search wasn’t going to move forward until N.C. State found out where it stood with guys like Rick Barnes and Sean Miller,” an agent who works with college coaches told ACCSports.com. “Kudos to (State officials) for doing everything so quietly. I don’t even claim to know the details, and I know some of the people involved here. But Rick Barnes definitely is staying at Texas, so that search can start to take shape now.”

Bill Self, Sean Miller, and Bruce Pearl would have been great hires. I saw that list and it made me even more interested in going the mid-major route. Illinois, Arizona, and Tennessee are comparable jobs to NC State as well.

Hey guys whatever happens, I trust that the new coach will bring success back to the State basketball program. And again, I vote Randy Bennett of Saint Marys, but as long as we win, and pose a challenge to our neighbors, I will be happy, with whoever.

there’s no gaurantee that the next coach’s past success will translate into success at nc state.. i think the history does help.. especially with regards to how they perform in the post season. each year, under the current coaches, unx and duke will be the most difficult challenge but that doesn’t mean anything nationally unless we are trying to be the bubble team every year like va tech.

by the way, the hard part is over. it was both painful to watch our team this year and also to let SL go. it had to be done sooner or later and DY handled it very delicately IMO. this is why i trust that this coaching search is also going to continue quietly for the next 3-4 weeks. the big names are out there.. the mid majors are out there… all this is a learning process for us about our new leadership in the athletic program.

we can speculate all we want to about whom is hired, some of us will be excited and some probably let down. in the end, this coach still has to come to us for support and that we will do… we did it til we felt as if we were having “root canals” done.. so “patience” is our part in this role and to believe in our leadership… she’s got what it takes!

I just hope it isn’t Purnell. I feel confident that is not what DY is looking for.

I sure hope we land an A list coach because a a mid major is a big risk. There is a lot of mid major talent though. Some mid majors also recruit at lower entrance levels than NCSU, so that could be a problem for some.

Just so long as we have someone with proven success, solid recruiting connections and a true desire to coach at NCSU. Basically everything SID had but with actual success at the college level and consistent player improvement.

i just really don’t feel that purnell’s teams finish strong at the end of the year. i think he’s a good coach. i’m not worried with the level of risk if there’s past success to draw upon.

personally, i’d like the guy to have a chip on his shoulder which leans me more to the mid majoresque but i’m not turning a donovan or barnes away. i’m up for most any coach out there.. we won’t know how well he’ll do til he gets here as someone mentioned before. recruiting doesn’t bother me if the coach is worth his salt. by having the georgia boys established/on campus.. if they are successful, that will grab attention from others from that area. you know, those are the hometown heros until otherwise notified. winning recruits for itself. the roster is stocked with athletes.. they just need a little polish.

^agree 79 . . . and the new leadership is refreshing. I trust them. And we’ll all support whoever the hire is.

  8. Pack1998 03/23/2011 at 10:20 PM #

oh . . . and my Purnell reference was just an example, not saying he is a top candidate. I agree with ya, he was solid. They just couldn’t pull anything off in the NCAAs . . . no half-court offense.

  9. ILpackfan 03/23/2011 at 11:16 PM #

I’d be all right with Sean Miller, Chris Mooney, Randy Bennet, maybe Shaka Smart, or my personal dark horse candidate…Mike Lonergan.

  10. hball57 03/24/2011 at 11:55 AM #

I know I sound like a Shaka Smart disciple, but really I am just trying to be a little Devil’s advocate here.

People look at the group of Turgeon, Marshall, Grant, Smart, Mooney and they all have their pluses and minuses.

IMHO I think the biggest issue is where they get their experience from. While I do not have a statistical data, I believe the higher percentage of Mid-major coaches who succeed at a higher level have spent some time recruiting at a BCS school and having success.

That is my one negative against Marshall and Mooney. When you are successful at a Mid Major you are targeting a different player and recruiting High Level players is different that recruiting the next level. I also do not think Mooney’s offense will sit well here. Haven’t we discussed how any Modified Princeton offense will not win championships in the ACC?

I also think that you must have recruited in this region of the country. Turgeon’s history (with the 2 year exception of being at Jacksonville St. in AL) has been Mid-west and West Coast. That scares me as to how long it would take for him to establish recruit contacts in the East Coast as well as any of the West Coast Coaches.

So Grant and Smart have more of what excites me than the other Coaches after Miller and Barnes. So then let’s say you come to that decision. You then come to interview and watch and see who you think is a better coach. That goes beyond what we can do by watching TV. That requires the work that DY and the search committee are doing.

    Good post hball.

i can’t say i’m opposed to some of the younger coaches out there. i watched the miami game last night where bama crushed them. for any young coach.. in the triangle… win here and you are at the top of all the country. the more we discover about these young coaches!! the more excited i get about the upcoming hire.. still prefer a sean miller-esque coach though..
