Dave Glenn reports Barnes staying at Texas & recap of Tuesday’s wild Internet speculation

Note: Some of this entry was written last night. If you want to go straight to Dave Glenn’s Wed. update on our search, then go here and read the rest of the entry later.

______________________________________________________________

This entire entry could be a big waste of time because at this point we haven’t been able to verify the truth of any of the speculation we are about to make or the rumors we are about to point you towards. While it would be no surprise to SFN that Rick Barnes would have interest in coming to NC State, information on the search has been scarce and extremely hard to come by.

At times over the last few weeks we have thought we had a good feel for what was happening and the direction of the search. Of course, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that guys like Sean Miller who previously coached at NC State and Rick Barnes would eventually be targets of Debbie Yow. The order and the timing of how Yow dealt with the “big name” candidates was uncertain with several of these name coaches still in the NCAA tournament while at least one(Rick Barnes) was eliminated this past Sunday.

Yesterday afternoon was the first spike in Internet speculation that something was officially happening with the search. There are many critics of message boards, but as I pointed out with the UNC scandal very often big stories break on message boards and very often random posters on the Internet have the real story way before the media.

-Yesterday on Twitter, Dave Glenn of the ACC Sports Journal stated that he would have an update on the NC State coaching search posted shortly. He already had a story on the GT coaching search that we linked here.

-On Tuesday, I listened to Dave Glenn educate local callers that it was completely realistic that Barnes and Miller were candidates stating that he has known both coaches for 10 years and talked with them many times. Despite callers saying it was unrealistic and that NC State fans should be talking about mid-majors, Glenn was adamant that as long as Miller and Barnes haven’t said no then they are still candidates. If you will remember, then last week Glenn detailed how Uncle Jed bungled the coaching search five years ago especially in how we handled the courtship of Rick Barnes. Without Fowler in charge of the search 5 years ago, then it is likely the Sidney Lowe era never happens.

-On Monday, a normally reliable poster started this thread stating that Rick Barnes was to be in Raleigh at some point in the near future. This seemed to spark additional rumors about Barnes including potential sitings at the airport and on campus. In the age of cell phones, it is surprising that if Barnes really was on campus that someone didn’t snap a picture or shoot a video verifying his presence in Raleigh.

-Packpride runs their profile of Rick Barnes Tuesday afternoon. Coincidence? Then Packpride hosts a “Premium Chat” at 2:40 pm Tuesday which leads to more speculation and the spreading of additional rumors on Twitter and message boards about Barnes.

-Late yesterday afternoon/early evening www.packinsider.com posted this update:

We are unsure of what exactly that meeting was about, but the source, who previously said that he didn’t think Barnes was interested in the NC State position, has switched his tone and is now claiming that the current Texas coach is indeed looking very closely at the Wolfpack opening. Again, this is a source on the Barnes side which is how we were able to obtain this information.

*Update: To clarify, our source said nothing about Barnes NOT being in Raleigh. So if he was here yesterday or this morning, we don’t know about it. However, we’ve been told that he was not here this afternoon.

Read the full update. There is some Sean Miller information as well.

-This past Saturday, SFN ran with this entry on Rick Barnes. which was prompted by rumors on our message boards over the weekend of an offer to Barnes:

OK Rick said post it…I just wanted to be sure this site wasn’t like some others that want to keep everything hush hush because they’re scared it’ll cause anothe debacle like the last search if info slips out.

I was told by someone very close to the basketball team that we offered Rick Barnes yesterday. I hope he accepts! I was also told that C. J. Leslie will most likely not return next season. He most likely will declare for the draft but a transfer is also possible.

-What ever happened to Tuesday’s update from www.accsports.com and Dave Glenn? It was delayed until this morning:

DavidGlennShow David Glenn Show
@
@BKG1975 it will be in the morning…as we said on the show today things change all the time during these searches. I’ll tweet the link.

-Finally, Dave Glenn’s update just appeared minutes ago:

Arizona’s Sean Miller and Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart are among those who remain factors in the N.C. State coaching search, but Texas coach Rick Barnes no longer is in the mix, according to multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.

“We all know this search wasn’t going to move forward until N.C. State found out where it stood with guys like Rick Barnes and Sean Miller,” an agent who works with college coaches told ACCSports.com. “Kudos to (State officials) for doing everything so quietly. I don’t even claim to know the details, and I know some of the people involved here. But Rick Barnes definitely is staying at Texas, so that search can start to take shape now.”

Everyone is a risk. Nothing is guaranteed no matter who we get. Nothing in their past history says they will win at NC State.

The only bit of information I care about in that DG article is, “Kudos to (State officials) for doing everything so quietly. I don’t even claim to know the details, and I know some of the people involved here.” Some agent that really knows some of the players, and he’s just guessing like the rest of us.

We’re all freaking out but DY is doing exactly what she told us. She is quietly going about her business. I tend to think with her coaching background DY knows a thing or two about coaching basketball, and she’ll get a quality coach.

Smart worries me because he really doesn’t have much of a head coaching resume. I don’t care if DG thinks he’s any good, I want someone that has 5 years or more of running a program. Someone with a proven track record of year in and year out quality performance on the court, and a steady stream of quality recruits. I don’t think Smart is there yet.

BTW – Not sure if Bobby K made the comment more than once, but I did hear him make that comment on Mike & Mike a few weeks ago – before Sid stepped down. He said something like, “Any AD that needs a search firm to find a coach should be fired.” It had nothing to do with us. Just shows what a dinosaur he is.

Here’s my advice for what to do with any Dave Glenn article: Print it, take it to your bathroom and put it in the cabinet under the sink. Don’t bother reading it. If at a future date you ever find yourself on the pot and the roll is empty, at least you’ll have his articles as an emergency stash. No, it isn’t as effective as the real TP but it will give you an otherwise unattainable unique sense of satisfaction.

I have a hard time believing that the search would move straight to Smart after Miller and Barnes. Surely there are other candidates in between.

  6. Lunatic Fringe 03/23/2011 at 3:53 PM #

I have ZERO sources and I knew that Pearl was not a candidate. I appreciate his ability to state obvious and call it news.

I other news…the sky is blue and State fans hate UNC.

  7. Astral Rain 03/23/2011 at 4:08 PM #

I’d have to problem with Smart- biggest upside, and I’ll take risk for the highest reward. Sid was high-risk, medium-reward, Smart is mediumhigh-risk/ultrahigh-reward to me.

  8. jbwbubba 03/23/2011 at 4:14 PM #

Smart may be the next big thing in coaching. However, after DY’s presser hiring Smart would represent a failure. Why bother with a search firm (I’ve defended her use of a search firm), but a monkey drunk on banana juice could hire the coach at VCU to come to the ACC.

It just had a scary realization that if LF were still our AD, he would have Pearl on his short list, and then when Barnes and Miller turned him down, he would have grabbed Pearl up out of desperation. Only he wouldn’t have called it desperation; he would call it savvy. I don’t think I’m off base on this.

  10. Par Shooter 03/23/2011 at 4:32 PM #

More likely that LF would have spent a week publicly courting Pearl and offering him the job, only to find out after the fact that Pearl had some trouble with the NCAA and was unhirable (think Beilein).

if you like Smart, why would you not like Grant more? Has Smart’s record plus demonstrated ability to instill discipline, defense, and rebounding at a crap program like Alabama and compete in the SEC.

Great chart courtesy of SI on the success rate of recent mid-major hires who rode a Sweet 16 berth to a High Major job (link = http://tourney.si.com/2011/03/23/power-rankings-the-sweet-sixteen/ ; lots of other great break-downs of NCAAT teams in there, if you are interested):

Good post, nyc. Very mixed track record, and the suddenly hot names usually got a lower caliber job than NC State.

We can and should do better. I trust that DY will.

Well, I suppose I won’t have to drive to Wilmington now….

  15. choppack1 03/23/2011 at 6:30 PM #

Here’s the problem boys and girls. After the “A-list” you quickly have to move on to the b-list guys.

With Barnes supposedly out of the mix – that leaves the possible “A” candidates as Miller and Donovan.

So, you are on to guys like Turgeon…and then, yes, Shaka Smart and Gregg Marshall. Personally, having watched his team play – I’m more impressed w/ Smart than Turgeon.

I am starting to feel like everyone is turning us down again. I sure hope I am wrong.

  17. gotncstate 03/23/2011 at 6:45 PM #

Phil Jackson!!!! A snowflakes chance in hell, but hey, No’s the worst he could say.

  18. rawolf 03/23/2011 at 6:49 PM #

I am starting to like Greg Marshall more and more myself.

Drop any speculation on Barnes . .. nobody knows anything . . .

Keep in mind WE may have turned HIM down. If you have 4 similar candidates, then his age could have worked against him. The selection team does not care he is from NC, that has no importance.

Let’s just state for the record — 7 days ago no person on this site had Barnes in their top 4 choices. WE all feel he is a good coach, but . . .

Regarding Shaka, you need to watch how VCU plays against FSU. FSU is a tough match-up for them, VCU should really get beat up here. His game plan, and in game adjustments will be key. If he wins he moves up.

Sean Miller is awesome BTW, love the guy. Stevens too. Brey and Turgeon are good, and Mooney ain’t bad. And Purnell (you may hate me) isn’t bad at all, he won at Clemson and he’ll have more upside here. Don’t shoot me for those names, just stating there are plenty of options . . . goal is to play it cool and not get too excited by one or the other.

Anderson down, Gillespie down. Now Mizzou looking for a coach . . . geez, how many schools are looking?

This is more fun than our b-ball season!

  20. 61Packer 03/23/2011 at 7:47 PM #

A root canal would’ve been more fun than our b-ball season.

And I’m afraid that my prediction a few weeks ago that this coach search could turn into a “root canal” might just come true.

So……….following the logic I’m reading on here, if FSU wins Friday night, do we pursue Leonard Hamilton?

  21. fullmoon1 03/23/2011 at 7:50 PM #

At this point it is all up in the air. I bet the guy that ends up with the job at least has a couple early denial reports before it is announced.

  22. fullmoon1 03/23/2011 at 7:51 PM #

    I would take Purnell.

  23. Wolfy__79 03/23/2011 at 8:00 PM #

“Hats off to Debbie Yow. I believe Glen has almost ZERO information regarding our search and is merely grasping at straws, like everyone else”

^this is exactly right IMO! i will assume so until the hire is made or someone has publicly said NO. that means the NO makes ESPN at the minimum! it is these guys job to write.. and keep up with each story, nc state is right behind what unx, duke, and fsu are doing in the tourney.. so we are the fourth (at worst) most relevant topic of discussion. having known someone for ten years could mean alot of different things, f.e. interviewing him after a game. he hasn’t been in the acc for more than ten years (barnes). it is all speculation until we HIRE or NO!

hey, shaka smart may be the next big thing.. but just not the next big thing at nc state! DY wants a builder.. in so many words from the presser.. he is not that. he is not even in the top ten in that category. the A list is in tact.

either the coach is still playing or recently lost out in the tourney. with the two, i still see a week or two lag on the hire announcement at the minimum! it is not a bad thing that we haven’t hired anyone yet!! it just says to me that this is being handled in a professional manner and not a desperation move that we’ll see at some other schools!

  24. Wolfy__79 03/23/2011 at 8:04 PM #

^^we missed hamilton several years ago but he would have been pretty good at nc state.

^purnell shouldn’t have been fired.. but every year i watched his teams fall apart towards the end of the season? i don’t know why but it seemed like an every year occurrence.

i think we can all give ourselves a “root canal” if we worry too much about the big names and don’t trust DY. imo, no need to worry. we all know that SL wasn’t working to our standards.. the next coach will have HC experience which our last two lacked anything convincing.

  25. adub95 03/23/2011 at 8:46 PM #

Unfortunately there is some truth to the Pack fan being negative and having our fair share of members of the lunatic fringe. And I know that whoever is hired we will all have our own opinion, either positive or negative, our guy, not our guy, etc. The best thing we can do, regardless of who DY shows up with at that podium as our next coach, is to be united in support of the new coach moving forward. Once its done, its done. Let’s leave the 2nd guessing behind. Go Wolfpack!
