P.S. – Basketball Team Lost Again

Not that it will surprise any of you, any more than it did the subdued crowd in Raleigh. The Hokies lead pretty much from start to finish, and close out a 77-69. Here’s the ESPN recap, if interested in a few of the sorry details.

Like most of you, I’m much more interested in coaching search news than in more game results. We plan to have profiles and discussion on some of the possible candidates in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

We might be the worst team in the conference. Miami and Wake are right there with us. Trip to Durham this weekend will be like having a root canal without any pain killer.

This season is swirling around the bowl and down the hole.

This is one of the saddest but funniest front page posts I’ve seen in a long time. Good job BJD!

Any way to petition ESPN to not show the Duke game?

Oh geez, what the hell am I thinking? ESPN not show a Duke game? Sorry, the blood must have ceased flowing to my brain for a moment there.

During my stay at NC State the women’s team used to rate better than the boy’s team….
shall we talk about them ?

    Les Robinson redux.

  7. Astral Rain 02/03/2011 at 6:28 AM #

women’s team isn’t any good either this year.

  8. mak4dpak 02/03/2011 at 7:07 AM #

I have to totally disagree with Astral Rain. The women’s team is good, and has continued to improve, and recently lost games to the top teams in conference/nation. Never mind that there is quite a height differential, as we are undersized, but continue to be competitive in Harper’s second year. Expect good things with the women’s program, unlike Sid’s failures.

i actually have to give the crowd credit last night… most i’ve seen people go bonkers when we got their lead under 10, when we got it to 6 it was starting to get downright rowdy in there.

looking forward to the profiles & discussions on potential candidates.

I was looking at the record. And yeah, I do believe in Harper- but there are growing pains. This is year 2, and she did have a very good year 1.

I just think no NCAA tourney= bad year, for both men’s and women’s program.

    bring back HERB

  12. coach13 02/03/2011 at 8:20 AM #

Harper overacheived last year making the tourney. I have alot more confidence in THAT team’s direction, although the Duke meltdown was pretty bad. I watched it.

I have stopped making it a point to watch State men BB but it was a slow TV night, so bounced back n forth from that and Tropical Thunder.

On top of PP coaching, those guys are just no good. They can’t shoot for sh!t. They get a ton of outside looks but simply can’t make them (ahem CJW, Javi, Brown and CJ”airball”Leslie).

Anyway, not to rehash what everybody knows, but I think we are in serious jeopardy of making the NIT.

same ole Ghostbusters question for Yow: “who’re ya gonna call?”

  14. mak4dpak 02/03/2011 at 8:48 AM #

I have to say, the women’s team blew a big lead against Duke, and lost by one. We certainly can never expect the men to have any kind of significant lead against Duke, and it certainly is going be ugly this Saturday. I’m ready to get to the light at the end of the tunnel. The Sidney Lowe farewell tour continues.

^Hard to make the NIT with only 12 victories…

    Some numbers:

First 8 games in ACC play:

    2006-07 – 3-5
    2007-08 – 4-4
    2008-09 – 2-6
    2009-10 – 2-6
    2010-11 – 2-6

    Notice any patterns?

In 2006-07, the first year of the Sidney Lowe era, we finished 5-11. Average margin in those 16 games: -7 (-15.6 in the 11 losses, +12.2 in the 5 wins, thanks mainly to a 25 point blowout of VT).

In 2010-11, the last year of the Sidney Lowe era, we are 2-6 through 8. Average margin in those 8 games: -5.6 (-11.3 in the 6 losses, +11.5 in the 2 wins, thanks entirely to a 21 point blowout of Wake).

The excuse in 2007 was he had to do it with Herb’s leftovers and had only six scholarship players. He’s now had five years to build a roster and the results have been almost exactly the same.

    Any questions?

I can’t help it but I still suffer through these games whenever they are on TV. Last night was about rebounding, or lack thereof. Sid is a great recruiter but can’t seem to motivate anyone. Rebounding is about effort and last night shows how much effort we give night in and night out which is very little. I just feel bad for Tracy since this is his last year. CJL looks good for stretches and then takes terrible shots (the air ball three and then the one with 30 seconds left on the shot clock).

On another noted I’ve been trying to think of coaches that might come to Raleigh. This is about all I’ve come up with.

Rick Barnes (the obvious choice and a candidate 5 years ago)
Steve Lavin (would he really leave his recruiting class at St. John’s though)
Brad Steven (Butler is having a down year and I’d like to see what this kid could do with some talent)

It’s funny that his second and third years were the worse, but in his second year he had the best ACC record halfway in.

I am a Kelly Harper fan….so don’t take this wrong. I went to the Duke and the Southern Cal games. Big leads…bigger than the Men had. BLEW IT. Harper was crying after Duke. The WKNC commentator that did the post game reached over and patted her on her shoulder and gave her a few minutes to calm down. We were RIGHT behind them…this is FACT, not something I read or was told. She is a very competitive lady and will be a great coach, but she is having problems operating with a YOUNG squad that does NOT know how to win. Sid’s first year was a roller coaster….remember we went to the final game in the ACC Tourney in Tampa…I was there.

Men’s team blew the game in the first half, then tried vallantly to win. Sid did the SAME thing that Roy did….when the starters are NOT performing, bench them. He pulled three out quickly.

I was there and also listening to the radio guys on my iPod. Tracy’s knee is very marginal….it is giving him more issues. Harrow was so sick, he did not even come to the game. We could NOT his diddly squat.

Yes, the crowd was supportive….maybe we should expect more from this site.

Sid wore a bow tie last night….some folks were wisecracking about it.

Sid wore it out of respect for Bernie Batchelor. Bernie was the team photographer during the Valvano years. That was a nice touch and shows a class act.

Unless you listenend to the Post Game (I did not hear the pre-game), you did not KNOW that.

I watched a lot of mistakes last night….like CJL attempting 3 pointers….but CJL also finally got back into a rebounding groove and scored 18 points.

Folks forget that we have a USUAL starting line-up that has three freshmen, a Sr. and a Jr. The Sr. has a bum knee. The Jr. is going through a shooting slump but is a holy terror on DEFENSE.

Each of the Freshmen, when they were in high school and behind were told to “WIN THE GAME”. It is difficult to break old habits.

So, go ahead and throw Sid under the bus. Then hire someone and he will look like the Messiah next year…..talk about a REDUX of Sendek.

Do you recall or remember at all, those WONDERFUL SENDEK YEARS? When he took over for Les. Look for that SAME syndrome if Mrs. Yow pulls the pin on Sidney.

What is crazy is that last year was one of the worst rosters we have ever had. It is impossible to win with Javi, Degand and J Mays as your only guards. I really thought Lowe did a good job with last year’s team and it gave me hope that the same would happen this year.

Very disappointing. But I am excited about the coaching search!

Say goodbye and thanks to Sidney, say hello to Tubby and lets get on with the next era of NC State basketball.

It was time to pull the plug after year two of the Low Era.

I was there last night and like ADVENTUROO, saw a lot of NCSU mistakes. Like big men (more than one) who keep shooting from around or behind the arc (rebund, anyone?). Like big men (or anyone wearing red) who don’t know how to block out or take a charge. Like the worst shot selection at the worst possible time, all evening, all season. Like a lack of intensity at times, then intense, then slack again. Like a certain #5 whose legs fly APART on short jump shots, with predictable results. Like a sorehead who again lets his temper hurt the team. Like a coach who won’t bench above player. Like one of the ACC’s best 3-point shooters who is no more a part of Low’s offense than State’s a part of the ACC elite. Like a team full of players who’re mediocre free throw shooters. Like a team full of players who don’t know how to square up for short jumpers and instead are throwing up wild, off-balance one handed floaters all season. Like a team full of players who can’t (or won’t) play defense but will leap (pun intended) at the chance to make a highlight reel dunk when a layup will suffice. Like a coach who won’t insert a 7-footer at all during a 2-game stretch when we’re being killed on the boards and our center has a bad knee.

Not only do we need a new coaching staff, we need an overhaul of the entire men’s basketball program. And the new coach, if there is one (and I’m not convinced Low will be canned until after next season) will have a tough time converting a bunch of NBA wannabees into a real team. Good luck!

Only watched a minute, that was enough. Sad. Glad to hear they made a late run to show some signs of life.

I didn’t realize that Tracey was having lingering issues? Is he still recovering, or is this the best he’ll be? If the latter, good-bye NBA. Being a ‘tweener’, he was never going to be an NBA star anyway.

Our results on the court have been abysmal for so long, that fan apathy has GOT to be at an all time high.

Yow, Woodson, NC State supporters have got to do more than just bring the right guy in. It has gone beyond just the head coach now. There’s got to be a complete change in the mindset, attitude, commitment, support, resources, etc. to get this turned around.

No offense to some of these other schools, but there is no reason on this earth that NC State should be losing 5 straight games to teams like Virginia Tech, and losing as much as we do to teams like Florida State, Maryland, Clemson, Virginia, etc. Forget about Duke and Carolina, we can’t even compete with the lower half of the league teams anymore. There is no reason for that at a school like NC State, who has as good a history and fan support & energy for basketball as anyone else in the league (not named Duke and UNC).

It’s really a shame if you look hard at where we are right now as a program.

I suppose we’ve identified the last one left on the Lowe bandwagon. Have you checked out the casualty list for VT? You can either bitch and moan, or deal with the situation at hand and move forward.

Lowe is done. Finished. Period. I honestly believe that if he won out from here forward, he would still be gone. Which is about as likely as me winning Powerball.
