Thoughts from the Badger State

Whenever we have a game, I try and seek out the views and opinions of those from the opponents area.

Today, we will look at Swingtown Badger Basketball Blog and The Badger Herald.

From Swingtown:

I don’t think a home game could have come at a better time. The Badgers couldn’t hit the broad side of the barn in Orlando, especially from deep…  NC State used to be a lot like Wisconsin with Herb Sendek at the helm. But he was chased away to ASU because their fanbase seemingly values high tempo over success… But they are signing 4- and 5-star recruits now, so I guess they can lose in style.

The Herald:

Despite their youthfulness, UW head coach Bo Ryan acknowledged the team’s athleticism and natural talent, saying they “can beat anyone in the country.”

But when it comes to anticipating NC State’s game plan, Ryan, whose teams have always been able to slow down the pace of their opponent, expects nothing less from the Wolfpack than another attempt at running the Badgers up and down the court.

“They’ll do that. Anybody that sees our team salivates. You know, if Pavlov rang a bell…” Ryan said. “People have been trying to run it down our throats for 10 years, it’s our job to stop them.”

Slowing down the opposing offense is somewhat of a trademark for UW, which has finished in the NCAA’s top 10 in points allowed in each of the last four years. So far this year, the Badger ‘D” has remained as dependable as ever, allowing an average of 54 points per game, right on cue with years past.

Only one team thus far has scored more than 60 points on UW, and Badger opponents have been held to shooting an average of just .387 and .351 this season.

On the other side of the court, the Badgers have struggled to consistently shoot the ball well over their last three games in the Old Spice Classic. In all first halves, UW connected on just .318 of all shots while coming back in the second to hit .509 of all attempts.

Other than poor shooting, UW’s two losses so far this season don’t have much else in common. Against UNLV, Wisconsin won the rebound fight and took full advantage of second chance points, but it was costly turnovers late in the game that made the difference.

Against Notre Dame, Wisconsin committed just four turnovers but lost the rebound fight and failed to get to the free throw line.

Tonight will be a battle of wills, the will to impose one style over another. The thing is, I don’t see it being that much of a factor unless we REALLY run the floor. Fortunately, we do have the ability to run an effective half-court offense, and we all know Wisconsin can run. This is a really tough game to quantify, which means we could easily get blown out or pull the upset. One thing is certain, this is an exceptional opportunity for NCSU to take the next step. But if we lose tonight, we still have some marquee games remaining in December to nullify a loss to the Badgers.

In absolutely unrelated news, came across this (not sure if anyone is talking about it on the forums): In short, despite what we heard from Gruden’s camp earlier this week, athletic director Kirby Hocutt will travel to Tampa Wednesday and meet with Gruden to gauge his interest in the position.

It’s panic button time. Not even David Thompson could save a Sid-coached team

  2. wolfwarrior 12/01/2010 at 9:37 PM #

    A blowout. 38 point lead.

I don’t know NCSU84. I made considerations for all the things you listed coming into the game and expected this to be a loss. I did NOT however expect this to be the unexplicable bafoonery that I’ve been watching. Basics and fundamentals are completely missing. There is no discipline. There is no energy or sense of urgency. It looks like kids playing pure street ball. I was not prepared for this and don’t know how to rationalize it to myself. what have they been doing for six weeks at practice? The items you listed just can’t explain away what we’re seeing right now. For the first time, I’m seeing things in a different light. I hate it. But to deny it is to lie to myself.

These announcers keep handjobing the Big 10 viewers. I have not heard them mention once that the Big 10 has never won this challenge.

  5. phillypacker 12/01/2010 at 9:43 PM #

Wisconson is shooting 63% on threes

  6. phillypacker 12/01/2010 at 9:44 PM #

i would rather lose the way state is playing than have to watch wisconsin basketball. It is so plodding.

  7. ADVENTUROO 12/01/2010 at 9:45 PM #

I’m NOT paniced….yet. This is BOO UGLY. I was chuckling last night at the half time score of the Heels….wish that ours was that close.

Freshmen playing like their on an asphalt court….can almost hear the chain baskets rattling.

I wonder if SId is punishing the team or US?

Hopefully, it will get better, but this is difficult to watch. It has been a LONG time since I saw a team score less than 50% of the other team’s points….it is 86-43 now….

Biggest margin, I think from the TV graphics is 44. We are going to set a NEW Wisconsin record.

    Vandy looks LOST

Philly, where have you been? The Big10 won the challenge last year. And gonna win it again this year. State should issue an apology to ESPN, the ACC and the Big10 for polluting this event with what must be the worst performance in the eleven year history of the Challenge.

At what point does DY start looking elsewhere? Wonder what Gregg Marshall is up to?

  10. wolfwarrior 12/01/2010 at 9:47 PM #

Archer must be coaching the D here tonight. Badgers shooting 55% from field.

It is pretty easy to handjob the announcers when you are winning by 40+ pts!!!!! I mean Wisconsin is not even ranked!!!! and i know this team is young and t smith is out but i am tired of excuses, excuses, excuses!!! If i were our ad debbie yow, i would be waiting at rdu airport with a severance package and hand the reins over to larry harris with this warning, i must see improvement or you are gone!!! There is no excuse for a acc basketball team to lose in this manner. It is a disgrace, a disgrace and we do not have a coach!!! What about all this incoming acc talent ???
    Fire,Fire, Fire Sidney Lowe tonight!!!!!!!!

  12. wekiser 12/01/2010 at 9:51 PM #

Wow! I agree with backnine….we need to apologize for our display of “Basketball”! That is embarrassing!

  13. wolfwarrior 12/01/2010 at 9:51 PM #

Goodbye Sid. Thanks for the memories.

  14. PoppaJohn 12/01/2010 at 9:52 PM #

What a stinker! Sid told us there would be days like this – but this is worse than I imagined. It’s a team full of freshmen and sophomores – and they are playing like it. I turned it off.

The good new is, if Tracey had played he would have scored 20. The bad news is we still would have lost by 20! Bwaaahahahahahaha.

I know, I know – you hate Sid already. Get used to it, he’ll be here all season.

But what has happened to CJL, the greatest thing since sliced bread??? Brown’s doing pretty well, Harrow’s pretty much what we expected at this point, but CJL has been almost invisible!

  15. heavy 12/01/2010 at 9:53 PM #

Well, if Debbie Yow is what she seems to be, she’s already making phone calls to the coaches on her short list to get prepared for the end of the season. I don’t know who you would get right now, but Sid needs a nice send off back to the NBA at seasons end. I don’t enjoy saying that but it is painfully obvious…

  16. whope90 12/01/2010 at 9:56 PM #

Digger phelps states we are the sixth best team in the acc??? what does that say about acc basketball this year??? If we lose by 39 at unranked wisconsin, whom digger phelps states is the fourth best team in the big ten, what happens when this same team plays duke? Is there a possiblity that we could lose by 100?? And how bad do we lose at syracuse??
Could we have back to back 39+ pt loses?? That would make us losers of 3 of our last four to ncaa teams!!! I just home that debbie yow has the guts to fire this sorry coach now!!! I mean on ESPN remember Jimmy V night of all things to lose this way!!! Disgrace,Disgrace,Disgrace!!!!!

NCSU1984: “Don’t press the panic button just yet.” “Keep in mind, this is a young team, playing on the road, and their sr. leader (Tracy) is injured.” “With that list of issues….”
’84, you are right, as miserable as this was. We needed Smith (all-ACC, don’t forget) bad tonight. We wouldn’t have won, but I’ll bet it would have been respectable with Smith in there.
Our freshmen and the team are probably as good as advertised, but they’re just getting used to playing against MEN, instead of boys. They’re weaklings now, and they easily get tired and discouraged. But wait till March….
This was worrisome, but taking everything into consideration it’s not as bad as it looked. They’re measuring themselves right now, and realizing their shortcomings, which is better than getting overconfident with W’s over easy foes.
The freshmen really need to beef up physically, which I’m sure they’re aware of and which will happen in due time. Tonight was just a perfect storm in Wisconsin’s favor.

saturday’s final score vs syracuse: orangemen:100 state:50 man i wish there was a football game sat, at least they have won more games this year than our baksetball team will!! Hey maybe we could ask out of the acc conference and join the meac??? I mean we could be a@t and nccu could we??

  19. whope90 12/01/2010 at 10:03 PM #

“”not as bad as it seems”” what could be worse?? that we did not score?? or we played with four girls and a midget??? Wait that is our coach(the midget). Face it folks, we are a borderline nit team with players whom the coach think are great and it is wait until next year!! Once again!!
Heck, Debbie Yow use to coach and she has more experience than el sid(the midget). Why not fire him and take over the coaching duties!! I am for it!!!

  20. graywolf 12/01/2010 at 10:04 PM #

Freshmen played like VERY young and immature freshmen.

Wisconsin has lost 11 games at home in 12 years. Tough place to play.

But, this was really an embarrassing loss. This team looks like they are poorly coached and if that is the case Sid may been joining the 10% of the country that is unemployed.

  21. NCcoastalwolf 12/01/2010 at 10:07 PM #

I am a Lowe guy but this is unacceptable.

  22. eas 12/01/2010 at 10:08 PM #

Our team is so far behind at this point. 0 organization and one the worst teams I have seen with fundamentals. Plenty of good teams play with freshman who play together better, so the young excuse works only with stupid mistakes. This team makes CONSISTENT mistakes.

Poor coaching display of a team that is out of control.

Cm Leslie…..welcome to college BB. Now you can realize why you should not be staring until you improve. The potential is their but you are not ready yet to start.

    Vandy is painful to watch.

Brown and Wood are the only players who have a clue right now.

Did we really just loose and look that bad?

  23. Packaddict 12/01/2010 at 10:13 PM #

I was optimistic this year would be different. The pure lack of effort makes me sick.

  24. 61Packer 12/01/2010 at 10:19 PM #

    Can we get any LOWEr?

  25. GameOfInches 12/01/2010 at 10:38 PM #

Our guys huddle up after every dead ball. What are they saying to eachother? If the answer is “it’ll be okay” well, it won’t be. Show some passion, give an effort, and compete!
