WRAL.com Recap

An improbable touchdown. A long punt return for a score. And a key stop on a 2-point conversion.

Yes, Russell Wilson and North Carolina State did it to North Carolina again.

State won its fourth straight over Carolina today, with a 29-25 win at the picturesque Kenan Stadium. More importantly than the win over its biggest rival, State won its eighth game of the season and will claim the Atlantic Division with a win over Maryland next Saturday.

A few observations:
*That’s not me in the pic above, nor did I take it, but the sheer number of Carolina fans wearing “I Support Butch” t-shirts was astounding. Not only the support, but how many folks are wholly convinced Butch is building a football powerhouse over at The Flagship. Personally, I hope he gets a hefty raise and stays awhile — it’s working out well for us.

*For the record, there are more pines immediately around Carter-Finley than Kenan, yet somehow we never get credit for them.

*Love the all-white road unis, always have. I was trying to think of other teams with white helmets that wear all white on the road: Penn State, Texas, and Tennessee were all I could come up with right off hand. Very sharp look.

*When at Kenan, this game is pretty durn close to being a neutral site for State.

*Any of you that have ever complained about the Carter-Finley restroom lines should spend an afternoon in Kenan. You’ll change your tune.

*I can’t decide which I liked better, the “I am a Tar Heel” videos with Hakeem Nicks and Kendrick Burney, et al, or the ones with Butch Davis extolling the importance of academic integrity to school kids.

*Greg Little was featured on this game’s ticket stub (apparently Marvin Austin was last week). Can’t make this stuff up.

*For all you diehard Carolina fans out there, it’s “Tar Heels” (two words) not Tarheels.

*Lastly, when you’re tailgating in a parking deck, it’s just called “parking.”

Luke DeCock says it’s not just another game

Which means it was far more than just another game. It was 10 pounds of football in a five-pound bag. Whatever a rivalry game is supposed to have, this had it.

The pivotal play in the game was not only disputed but open to interpretation, and was immediately followed by a scuffle that saw two players ejected.

The “interpretation” referred to who deflected the ball – the out-of-bounds WR or the in-bounds Hole defender. As I said during the game and post-game threads, it was clear to me (after watching the replay, which ACCN did a surprisingly good job with) that the Hole tipped it. Had he been aware of where he was, he could have let it go, or tipped it backwards. Dumb ass.

And from the paper today, we learned that the tipping Hole who saved our bacon was Searcy, the same jackass who sealed the win by not fielding the punt at the end. Perhaps he deserves a game ball as well.

And Butch’s decision was NOT the same as TOB’s in Death Valley. 4th and 1 is a play with like a 70 percent success rate. Every study shows that an onside kick is 10-15 percent, at best. That’s a huge distinction. Now, that said, I’m not sure you can kick deep and play to get the ball back with 40 seconds and no timeouts. Pretty low odds play. And if State had started at its own 20 instead of the 40, perhaps TOB does pass. Huge differential in field position for the punt.

Hey, since UNX came up with t-shirts showing Cameron labeled as “Hansbrough Indoor Stadium”, maybe we could get some of Kenan labeled “O’Brian Memorial Stadium”…!

I started Grad school at State in 1982 and witnessed alot of great and not so great games as a student including the big one in ’83. this all in one weekend ranks just one below that special date in ’83.
    my 24 hours
    1. Salisbury High advances to the third round in the 2A playoffs
    2. Pack beats George Mason
    3. Carowina gets beat by Minn.
    4. Delaware Valley College, Pa. (my undergrad school) beats Salisbury U., MD to advance in the D-3 playoffs to face Mount Union (insert miracle here)
    5. State Beats Carowina
    6. Carowina loses to State (every carolina loss counts as a point too even if it is us who beats them, sorta like a bonus point)
All I ask is that State beats Georgetown tonight and only then can wake me up. Throw in an Eagle win over the Giants and I am 8 for 8 in one weekend. Unheard of for a State fan.

I’m gonna go the other way as some of you. I thought we were better all around, and the only thing stopping us from blowing them out was ourselves. I felt that way yesteray and in our 3 losses. I feel we should had won some of our closer games by bigger margins.

I watch, I analyze. I just haven’t seen us play anyone we couldn’t beat. That doesn’t always translate into wins, but I could not say that in past years. UNC may have been better talent wise in some areas, but we compensated. UNC IMO is a team of talented but dumbass players. They probably do out-talent us in several areas, but they just don’t have “it”. I can’t explain “it” but they don’t.

    A soul-less team.

  6. BJD95 11/21/2010 at 12:02 PM #

Carolina was playing with more heart and determination than us for almost three quarters. Then they poked us in the eye and woke the tiger. Just in the nick of time!!

  7. rlgray 11/21/2010 at 12:37 PM #

Even with their tutors, this is the only 4.0 the Carolina football players will see!

  8. PapaJohn 11/21/2010 at 1:58 PM #

    ^ HILARIOUS!!!

Simply a great game. We totally shut down the running game, forcing them to pass. Yates stepped up with a freakshow 411 yards, but without it this wouldn’t have been close. They are good, but we were the better team.

I personally wore exactly the same thing as the FSU game – hoping someone would give us this game. But we took it.

Think of all of the fluke things that have happened to us over the last XYZ years – we are way overdue for some luck. But we did make some of that luck, it was a play we practice. Spencer was looking for the tip.

I’m greedy. It’s been three great days, but I want one more.

    GO PACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with everything Primewolf on Page 1 wrote – esp. that we were manhandled on the line, lucky to get that win, and that they have some amazing athletes (as has been repeated several times – the best that money can buy)!

I just hope that this win helps us gain recruits – it would be a shame if we didn’t capitalize on it (like Gary Williams didn’t capitalize on his National Championship in 2002).

    what a game, though… what a game!

@85Designo – and roy’s boys could lose again later today too.

  11. wolfonthehill 11/21/2010 at 8:23 PM #

^ And they just did, Phang.

One win away from an inconceivably-perfect weekend of Pack sports… I mean, even v-ball won a set the other night. 😉
