WRAL.com Recap

An improbable touchdown. A long punt return for a score. And a key stop on a 2-point conversion.

Yes, Russell Wilson and North Carolina State did it to North Carolina again.

State won its fourth straight over Carolina today, with a 29-25 win at the picturesque Kenan Stadium. More importantly than the win over its biggest rival, State won its eighth game of the season and will claim the Atlantic Division with a win over Maryland next Saturday.

A few observations:
*That’s not me in the pic above, nor did I take it, but the sheer number of Carolina fans wearing “I Support Butch” t-shirts was astounding. Not only the support, but how many folks are wholly convinced Butch is building a football powerhouse over at The Flagship. Personally, I hope he gets a hefty raise and stays awhile — it’s working out well for us.

*For the record, there are more pines immediately around Carter-Finley than Kenan, yet somehow we never get credit for them.

*Love the all-white road unis, always have. I was trying to think of other teams with white helmets that wear all white on the road: Penn State, Texas, and Tennessee were all I could come up with right off hand. Very sharp look.

*When at Kenan, this game is pretty durn close to being a neutral site for State.

*Any of you that have ever complained about the Carter-Finley restroom lines should spend an afternoon in Kenan. You’ll change your tune.

*I can’t decide which I liked better, the “I am a Tar Heel” videos with Hakeem Nicks and Kendrick Burney, et al, or the ones with Butch Davis extolling the importance of academic integrity to school kids.

*Greg Little was featured on this game’s ticket stub (apparently Marvin Austin was last week). Can’t make this stuff up.

*For all you diehard Carolina fans out there, it’s “Tar Heels” (two words) not Tarheels.

*Lastly, when you’re tailgating in a parking deck, it’s just called “parking.”

Luke DeCock says it’s not just another game

Which means it was far more than just another game. It was 10 pounds of football in a five-pound bag. Whatever a rivalry game is supposed to have, this had it.

The pivotal play in the game was not only disputed but open to interpretation, and was immediately followed by a scuffle that saw two players ejected.

Gotta give Czajkowski a lot of credit also. That field goal before half time was huge. Carolina had all the momentum at the time and I felt like they probably would have score again before half (fortunately it was only a field goal). Czajkowski had a big game.

That was Jarvis Williams in street clothes with the broom.

Yes, the number of Butch tshirts seen is unbelievable. The statements made by posters on the “I support BD” FB page are ridiculous. I can’t believe they know the factual info that is already out and still feel that way. Must be something to do with the elitist superiority thing.

Posted the list of unc-ch’ers who will never beat NC State… was shocked at how much talent they’re losing this year… guess they’ll be young again in 2011!!!

Great to see FSU snuff the Twerps’ title hopes. MD surely won’t be as up for our game as they would have been…..you would think….

  6. JeremyH 11/21/2010 at 12:38 AM #

Maryland will still be playing for bowl position, no?

  7. wufpup76 11/21/2010 at 12:42 AM #

“There are 12 games in the season. How can Butch be responsible for all of them?”

    ^Quote of the century.

Good for Jarvis (is that him holding the broom?)! Not for getting kicked out, but for sticking up for his teammate and not taking any of that crap. There was a time not so long ago where our school motto seemed to be “just keep taking it up the a*s no matter how bad it gets and don’t retaliate”.

I was never a fan of that motto.

    T.J.Graham touchdown return was I think # 8 or 9 on ESPN’s top plays.
Owen Spencer touchdown was #1 on ESPN’s top plays.

2 ESPN top plays! What a game.

Bowl position…or championship opportunity…..what would fire you up more?

  10. bigdudenc 11/21/2010 at 12:44 AM #

I saw Greg Little on Franklin Street before the game. He had a gaggle of girls with him and he was grinning ear to ear. Much like his buddy Marvin sports; not a stitch of Carolina Blue on him. They allow him to stay on scholarship and he can’t even be a proper fan of the school on game day?

So, my favorite detail of the day was the Carolina fans that left after their failed 2 point conversion. They simply didn’t understand that they would get the ball back with a decent amount of time left to win on a FG. And apparently BMFD didn’t understand that with the 3 TOs, a minute plus, and knowing NCSU wouldn’t pass it until 3rd down; the smart call was probably to kick it deep and gain some field position for the walk off FG. Amateurs.

  11. bigdudenc 11/21/2010 at 12:51 AM #

BTW I think that may be Jarvis Williams in street clothes with the broom.

  12. DT44 11/21/2010 at 12:55 AM #

^Wait a minute, bigdudenc, are you calling a “smart call” the EXACT SAME STRATEGY for which TOB was vilified against Clemson???

You are being sarcastic, I hope..

  13. McCallum 11/21/2010 at 1:25 AM #

God has nothing to do with football.

Punishing the tar heals in a generic fashion is another thing altogether.

Yes, no more unc games for me until the streak is broke.

TOB needs to appeal the Williams suspension ASAP.

If we had hit the awful 4yd punt at clemson like we did our last punt today then state probably beats the tigers. Ifs and buts, candy and nuts yada yada.

Anyhow, it’s just an opinion and you know what they say about opinions . . .

On another note I just watched my DVR of the game. It is hilarious that BMFD and Thorp led the UNC walk of champions (or whatever they call it), and they put it on the Raycom broadcast. I wonder if Thorp walked Davis back to his car afterwards?

  15. wolfpacksoldier 11/21/2010 at 2:05 AM #

ive watched the tape several times with the altercation. i dont see any state player throw a punch. granted at the time the call was made, a double ejection was probably the best call the ref’s could have made, however, i dont believe a suspension for Jarvis Williams is due, IMO of course. GO PACK

I shall recount this day as soon as I can sober up, get some sleep, and recover from giving away my only daughter in marriage today while trying to keep up with what was going on with the game on SFN..

Thank God, I finally got you guys to post the score for me…I was going nuts, unable to figure out who was winning while being jerked and tugged to “stand here, smile, now here, smile…”.

All I can say is thank God for SFN and my Droid…I would have gone nuts!

Word to the wise…check the batteries in your radio before you go to the church for a wedding the next time!!!

From one of the postgame articles linked above:
“The pivotal play in the game was not only disputed but open to interpretation, and was immediately followed by a scuffle that saw two players ejected.”

First, I’m not sure how that play is open to interpretation. He clearly had control and landed fully in bounds in the endzone. That’s six every time with no room for interpretation as far as I can see.

Second, not even sure that was the pivotal play. I think the scuffle had more to do with the team waking up from an inexplicable slumber than did that play. Also, I think the punt return for TD might have had more influence.

And while not pivotal, pe se, the safety was huge as well. UNC get’s their backs off their own goalline on that play and they have a good shot at moving downfield and winning with a field goal.

  19. russwuf 11/21/2010 at 4:26 AM #

luke deCock….”open to interpretation”…..??????..the catch could not have been any clearer….what a TOOL…the name well how aprapos….

Count on “The Broom” being a focal point next year of the shockingly total disrespect that NC State’s team shows the wonderful, great and all-holy University of North Carolina Tar Heel football team. It will surely join the Logo Stomp and other events in their (feeble) minds and become part of the myth of the not-a-rivalry.

  23. papackman 11/21/2010 at 9:39 AM #

Hey Highstick ^…..Congratulations on the toughest givaway in the Dad business!!! You’ll never forget this special day for your daughter, a the day State swept the Tarholes!!

Some one on some thread on some forum somewhere asked if there should be a trophy for the State unx game. I nominate the broom!

Any change Butch gets in trouble for questioning the refs call on the play before the Miracle? Seems like he’s directly calling out the refs.
