SFN on Taylor Zarzour on now @10:07 am(Link to live audio available)

Listen to live audio here.

We wanted to make everyone aware that Jeff will make an appearance on “The Sports Drive” with Taylor Zarzour on 620AM Thursday morning (September 9th) at 10:00am.

Jeff’s appearance and conversations on the show have been very popular and we look to continue this relationship with Zarzour.

Additionally, we’ve had a lot of folks ask us for more news and conversation related to the Wolfpack this week. Our internet platform is now very segmented; we’ve bifurcated our analysis, editorial and ‘major’ news onto the main blog while allowing our message forums to drive the real-time, topical conversations and newsy coverage of items. This is why we are so persistent in reminding our readers to also click on our message forums to get more than your fill of everything that you want.

Thanks!

    2) is a great point LLW. The results of the investigation are immaterial. The point is that it was “properly investigated by an independent agency”.

There is no way anyone can reasonably state that an “investigation” of the happenings going on over at UNC can be conducted without bias by folks like Baddour, Davis, even Thorpe (and the others), when the very investigation they are conducting could impact their ability to feed their families.

  2. Phang 09/09/2010 at 1:35 PM #

@LLW: “I think it is a mistake to bring up Valvano and the related ‘scandal.’ It is definitely something that we Pack fans think about and care about, but in reality, it’s a straw man.”

I disagree. In my case, I’ve listened to crap from carolina fans since I saw my first FB game in Riddick, but for the last 20 years, all I’ve heard from them is how big a cheat Jimmy V was.

The Jimmy V problems were minor wrt the NCAA and no laws were broken. To have outside, independent investigation for such minor issues, it gives extra weight to the argument that we need the same since we’re dealing with organized cheating and illegal activity at unc.

  3. LifeLongWolf 09/09/2010 at 1:43 PM #

    @Phang: I respectfully disagree.

As you say “I’ve listened to crap from carolina fans since I saw my first FB game in Riddick, but for the last 20 years, all I’ve heard from them is how big a cheat Jimmy V was.” This clearly shows that you are emotional about the Valvano situation. Hell, so am I. I was at State then. I worshiped Jimmy V. I’m still just as pissed as I ever was.

But our anger and our frustrations over having our beloved alma mater treated differently than UNC gets treated comes through in our discussions, and it distracts from the main point, namely that we need an independent investigator.

It comes down to this: Do you really want to convince people of the need for an independent investigator? If so, my advice is to leave V out of it. The argument is strong on its own merits. There are some useful parallels in the two situations, but I think bringing them up is overall more distracting than it is instructive.

If, however, your goal is to blow off some steam about something that you are passionate about, then by all means, bring up V. Just don’t be surprised when people go off on tangents and get distracted from the issue at hand.

LLW – actually I guess we’re arguing two different issues (though you only raised one – bingo! on your point about emotion and tangents).

You’re correct that Jimmy V isn’t needed to justify an investigation.

However, on the show was also asked the question why are State fans so interested in unc’s problem?

And hearing crap about Jimmy V for 20 years is the answer I’ll give to that.

  5. Alpha Wolf 09/09/2010 at 2:08 PM #

^ However, on the show was also asked the question why are State fans so interested in unc’s problem?

Why did Auburn fans relish Alabama being investigated years ago?

Why did Alabama fans watch the Kiffin saga at UTenn with laughter and mirth?

    Because they’re rivals.

    That’s what rivals do.

    Everywhere.

To say that UNC fans wouldn’t enjoy this were the roles reversed would be to announce to the world what a fool you are.

  6. Scooter 09/09/2010 at 2:10 PM #

    ^^^ Agreed.

The thing is, ignoring the UNC scandal (especially when you’re only 24 miles away) when discussing college football is like ignoring the elephant in the room. Why would anyone who follows college football not be interested? The bigger picture is that this has major implications beyond UNC, the triangle, and 2010 ACC football. How this plays out is going to set a new precedent on how colleges are expected to monitor student athlete behavior as well as the standard at which the NCAA adjudges appropriate or inappropriate player-agent relationships. The NCAA’s either draconian, lenient, or somewhere-in-between response is going to affect every NCAA football program, not just UNC, NC State, UGA, Alabama, etc.

Plus, we hate UNC. The fact is, part of being a State fan is hating Carolina. Why are we so interested in thy scandal, let me count the ways…

Does anyone have a link to the old posting from this site, “Why I don’t hate UNC”? It’s an old favorite of mine.

Phang, I’ll see your Jimmy V and raise you a few decades of snobbery, condescension, holier-than-thou attitudes, and WalMart fans by the bucket loads. This is cosmic justice in it’s most glorious. They deserve everything they get, and more. Reap what you sow, you dirty cheating cheaters. I hate those little baby-blue wearing snobs so much I can taste it!

    Uh…except for one of them…my wife…

“To say that UNC fans wouldn’t enjoy this were the roles reversed would be to announce to the world what a fool you are.”

Not only that, but it would ignore the fact that we know how UNC fans respond when we are investigated. Many of our fans lived through it. We know they relished the experience.

Regarding the tutor – if she had a UNC e-mail address – it’s the state’s and is part of sunshine law I’d think – so records would be public – no matter what.

Likewise – if she had an office/office computer or laptop…If she had a state-issued laptop, then I’d think everything on that is subject to sunshine law.

Now – her own testimoney – that’s an entirely different matter.

As for Jeff’s comments – I haven’t listened to them, but I don’t think it’s fair to critize how he handled himself unless you’ve been in that position on such a nuanced statement.

It’s worth noting that Glenn is being typical Glenn – picking fights w/ someone when they are there to defend himself.

One of the many benefits to come from this scandal is that Glenn has been exposed as a man who lacks objectivity – and in his business, a man who lacks objectivity is a man who lacks integrity when it comes to his job..

This doesn’t mean Glenn isn’t a good family man. This doesn’t mean that he isn’t a good person. It just means that Glenn can’t be trusted when it comes to things UNC – and since he’s a journalist, it means he can’t be trusted to not only write about things UNC – and on the same line, if things impact UNC indirectly – like say NC State athletics – and Chuck Amato – we can’t trust him either.

    This is a fantastic point.

My two cents here is that it is not ‘about Valvano’. The focus should be on the fact that there is a very clear precedent that has been put into place regarding reactions to these types of allegations (that happened under Valvano).

My point is the PRECEDENT. Not trying to get them because of Valvano.

  12. JasonP 09/09/2010 at 2:43 PM #

Is Glenn lining himself up for Woody’s job?

  13. GAWolf 09/09/2010 at 2:58 PM #

LLW: I don’t see that your point in #2 is in direct conflict of the points made on this site. I think they align perfectly. The results have no bearing on the appropriateness of the process. That was UNC fan’s point in saying it was all spent money for nothing. That was not Jeff’s point at all.

With that said, my wife, too, is a UNC grad. And she’s called me “cute” for liking NC State for years… she’s as bad as any of the rest of them.

  14. GAWolf 09/09/2010 at 2:59 PM #

Interesting point, JasonP. Very, very interesting.

  15. LifeLongWolf 09/09/2010 at 3:01 PM #

Yeah, StateFans, I get what you’re saying. You have a valid point. But if we, as fans of NCSU bring up the parallels to the Valvano investigation, it smacks of getevenwith’emism. If Tom Suiter, or a Duke blogger, or someone outside of the NCSU family brings up Valvano, that’s ok. But I think it’s a tactical mistake for us to say it, even if it’s a valid point.

And to choppack, and to Jeff, please don’t think I’m criticizing how Jeff handled himself. He did a great job. I could never do live radio even 1/2 as well as he does. I’m just making an observation, admittedly with the benefit of the ‘backspace’ key and the online dictionary.

Side: Sorry boys, too many interviews on Glenn’s show today . Had to proceed with my life. It wasn’t for the lack of effort. I just couldn’t stay on hold with all his back to back guests and his constant follow up drivel between interviews.

For now, I’ll just refer to one of Dr. Badgerpack’s long heard phrases:

    Fuk’em Bucky.

Chops. Good point about tutor lap top.

One of the cherries in all this for me is like chop said, DG is getting more exposed as non-objective and as someone who takes it all personal.

He uses his job position as if it were an extension of who he is rather than what he does. It’s actually rather easy to manipulate him and his show and push his buttons because he uses airtime to defend himself and his viewpoints and tries to denounce others. MASSIVE EGO.

    In other words, typical Hole.

So I say have fun with that … otherwise IGNORE HIM.

Also consider that we may actually have a local version of Gregggggg Doyel … don’t underestimate the power of getting people to listen and call in by igniting a flame war.

  18. Alpha Wolf 09/09/2010 at 5:17 PM #

Is Glenn lining himself up for Woody’s job?

I would bet dollars to donuts that’s Mick Mixon’s job for the taking.

  19. Primewolf 09/09/2010 at 7:25 PM #

LLW made some key points and he is right, IMO. Going forward, the argument should be for independent investigation, first.

We need more horsepower in regards to the UNC BOG. Legislators, members of the Board or whomever. Why don’t the non0UNC guys on the BOG lead the charge. In fact, why don’t they go to the wall over it. What are they going to lose, a sorry position on the body.

Why aren’t some legislators making statements.

It is obvious to any fool that UNC can’t investigate itself, particularly given the systemic issues and natural tendency to whitewash what you don’t have to disclose or to connect the dots when you are the only ones that have enough info to see the dots.
