Doyel: Butch Davis has to be fired; UNC is a ‘floating turd’

Although we aren’t the biggest fans of this former local sports writer, he is one of the first journalists – local or national – calling for Butch’s head on platter. It is a scathing article.

If only North Carolina could forfeit the rest of the season.

That’s what North Carolina deserves. That’s what college football deserves, too. We deserve to not have that program, currently in the middle of two enormous and distinctly unrelated scandals, foisted upon us. The college football season is a three-month-long celebration of sport. It’s confetti, strobe lights and a kazoo. It’s a party. It’s a punch bowl.

North Carolina is the turd floating in there.

The present? The present is nauseating. We have to turn on the television and watch a team that has been cheating its ass off, coached by a man who let it happen.

Lot of dots to connect there — pock marks, really. Davis is gone. Maybe he doesn’t know it yet, but sometimes people like that are the last to know. He’s in the moment. He’s not thinking of his future. Hey, I’ll think of it for him, and what I think is this: He’s gone. He’s gone, and he’ll finish his career as an NFL assistant.

But we’re stuck with Davis for another 11 games, probably another 12, just like we’re stuck with the 2010 UNC football team — a team that didn’t give a damn about playing by the rules, academic or otherwise.

    Here’s the key sentence:

“Butch Davis hired Blake anyway, and blew a raspberry at common sense by putting him in charge of recruiting.”

People who think Butch survives are turning a blind eye to this fact.

“Blake is getting his hush money until BD can complete his exit strategy to an NFL asst coaching slot, then Blake will hit the airwaves with the truth.”

Why would you think that? I think it more likely that Blake keeps his mouth shut, unless forced otherwise by legal means. I would think that to Blake, Butch has been a rewarding bridge (for his entire adult life) that Blake would not want to burn.

@tjfoose1 – if it keeps him out of the legal system, and thereby somewhat employable in the future, I see Blake singing like a canary…

I think Blake’s silence will depend on two things – (1) what the SoS investigation already has on him and (2)how badly the blame gets hoisted upon him. At a certain point he will have to say “Enough!” and refuse to shoulder ALL the blame – especially when his future employment prospects completely crumble. $74,500 buys just so much silence. The irony is that money and more will quickly be gobbled up through legal fees paid to a UNC alumnus.
