Breaking: Major money trail ties agent to ex-UNC Associate Head Coach [12:30am]

Our author team was talking amongst ourselves today and everyone was charged with being on high alert for some major news breaking because (1) a little birdie had contacted us earlier in the week with some scoop and (2) Dick Baddour was on the radio today.

If you have learned anything about the current scandal at Carolina then you must know by now that the good folks of the highest integrity in the world – the guardians of the “The Carolina Way” – only speak to the media and go on the radio right before some bad news is about to break. Thanks to Dickie today, we were prepared! Tonight, we learn why old Dickie was on his media tour today.

Full article.

Prominent NFL agent Gary Wichard and former University of North Carolina assistant football coach John Blake have engaged in multiple financial transactions since May of 2007, a four-month investigation by Yahoo! Sports has found.

Wichard and Blake are now at the center of NCAA and North Carolina Secretary of State probes, which are seeking to determine the nature and scope of alleged agent tampering involving the football program. Those investigations have also focused on Tar Heels defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who has made at least five trips that have come under scrutiny. Two of those trips included training at a California facility less than two miles from Wichard’s agency, Pro Tect Management. Yahoo! Sports has obtained a hotel receipt from one of those trips, which lists Austin’s name above Pro Tect Management, as well as an address and Marriott Rewards number belonging to an NFL marketing agent who represents two current Pro-Tect clients.

On Blake receiving money from Wichard:

But three sources said documents show the relationship between Wichard and Blake also extended into the financial realm several times over the past three years. Those instances included:

• At least six wire transfers from Wichard’s private bank – The First National Bank of Long Island – to Blake.

• A $45,000 personal loan to Blake from The First National Bank of Long Island.

• A Pro Tect Management credit card issued in Blake’s name.

We would also recommend that you take a look at SFN’s Tweets in real time from tonight that can be seen here. Some pretty awesome running commentary there.

If you have spoken to any UNC-CH fan in the last couple of months, then you obviously know by now that “everybody does it”. Of course, most of the national media cannot think of a single instance where an Associate Head Coach of a major college program was actually a runner for an agent…but, what do they know? What would Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, ESPN and Yahoo know about sports?! They just need to talk to some Carolina people and learn that ‘everybody’ has Associate Head Coaches accepting and potentially funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to players!

Just for some grounding in this topic, the following are some comments from national and local media hitting the “Twitter universe” tonight. Obviously they don’t have a clue about what they speak!

Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports: @dennisdoddcbs Reggie Bush wasn’t a USC employee. John Blake was asst. head coach on payroll — and allegedly on the take.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports: @DanWetzel Asst coach taking money from agent to steer players would be most devastating NCAA case in years. UNC..may be in huge trouble

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports: @DanWetzel They’d never do it. Plus, UNC not repeat offender. But massive sanctions? Yes RT @Andy_Staples @DanWetzel Can you say Death Penalty?

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated: @Andy_Staples North Carolina is about to really become a basketball school — because it may not have a football program after this http://is.gd/fBnLf

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated: @Andy_Staples Can you say Death Penalty?

Pat Forde of ESPN: @espn4d: Yahoo story pounds some very detailed nails into North Carolina’s football coffin: http://tinyurl.com/26k9x2q

Synrgy Sports: @SynrgySports: NEVER been a case..where an Associate Head Coach of a major D1 football prgrm has been proven to be on an agent’s payroll.

It should be pointed out that just today at the Raleigh Sports Club speech, Dick Baddour said “the integrity of UNC is paramount.”  (Link) That “integrity” crap has been a running theme from the  “leadership” over there.  According to UNC-CH, Blake “resigned” in August because he was a “distraction” and, according to Butch, Marvin Austin is working his way back onto the team.  Are they still standing by those ridiculous staetments?   That is some super integrity they are showing over there!

Given tonight’s news, you have to wonder if the time hasn’t come that some actual adults will be forced to take over the process in Chapel Hill.

SFN will have more coverage and analysis of these major developments. In the meantime, we turn your attention to another reason why you should be leveraging our message boards – this post from February of this year titled “Black Santa accused of paying recruits in Chapel Hill”. NO!?

so when do we start looking at the commissioner of the acc, the head of officiating of the acc, the the majority of the employees of the acc, all of whom graduated from UNC, and have had nothing to say about the current situation of one of the conference members?

what other conference has so many alumnus of one shool representing the “welfare” of the leauge like the acc?

    Something just occured to me.

Ive seen Butchie’s contract posted before or at least parts of it and doesnt it say specifically say if butch and/or associate head coach (which blake was) commit NCAA violations then he could be terminated???????

Why reference the associate coach specifically?????Why not say staff in general????? Unless the Trickie Dickie was aware of Blakes reputation and allowed the hire anyway.

Someone with knowledge or insight please correct me if im wrong

    Statefans????????

All these hints in the past about bombs going off and finally, Finally they deliver!!!

What’s interesting to me is that now people are actually talking death penalty. As the Carolina facade continues to crumble, their true nature is finally coming out.

I can’t help but wonder if Baddour is being as stupid behind the scenes as he is in front of them. I wonder if he’s pissing off the NCAA investigators. Perhaps time will tell.

How the hell does Davis still have a job:

    1) I’m not responsible or accountable for my players dealing with agents;

    2) I’m not responsible or accountable for my players’ academic fraud;

    3) I’m not responsible or accountable for the actions and integrity of my coaches.

Come on. One player cheating, or one player working with an agent, maybe a coach bending a few minor rules. But this? If he’s not gone by the end of the week, then shame on the University of North Carolina and everyone associated with that institution.

  7. Packfan28 09/30/2010 at 6:24 AM #

Ah, now that I have had a chance to read through the whole story, I retract my previous post. The only question now is what time today will Butch resign? Or will he wait until tomorrow for some reason?

  8. Wulfpack 09/30/2010 at 6:39 AM #

I have intentionally been trying hard to hold back comments before the investigations are complete. But this is just pure filth and UNC is indeed in a world of trouble.

    Ezekiel 25:17
“The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children.

And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers! And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!”

^They’re going to get a cap popped in their asses, that’s for sure.

On a purely selfish note, I guess our in-state recruiting just took a quantum leap forward.

  12. coach13 09/30/2010 at 7:23 AM #

If you read my post from yesterday, looks like one brother is going to juvie!

How any intelligent person can take all this information and think UNC will get off light is truly going about with blinders on.

I really don’t want the death penalty, but UNC should suck…really bad…for a long time to come. Not only do I expect punishment bad enough to drive the recruits away, I expect to see free no strings attached no stipulation transfers allowed to those who don’t want to finish out their college careers with UNC (provided they were not involved of course),

  13. tuckerdorm1983 09/30/2010 at 7:54 AM #

but don’t forget UNC is cooperating fully with the NCAA and other authorities on this matter

  14. tractor57 09/30/2010 at 7:56 AM #

as I’ve said before I’m just waiting for the smoking gun relating to the BB program.

If the problem is so pervasive with football I find it hard to believe BB is totally innocent.

  15. TOBtime 09/30/2010 at 7:58 AM #

Thank you Yahoo Sports. I knew those guys had to be in there digging somewhere! The smoking gun, seemingly one of many, now begins to emerge. I wonder how many of those “big-money” donors are pushing bad-doer to get guys back on the field now? I’m betting big-money and unx football don’t get mentioned together for a long, LONG time.
We’ve been waiting a week for this. Best part is, it’s just the tip of the mushroom cloud forming over the hole. I guess nuclear clean-up is one way to get rid of all the filth in the hole.

  16. Daily Update 09/30/2010 at 8:03 AM #

Packfan28: Not only that, but he is 1-2 and probably won’t do better than 6-6 this year. He might also have his entire three year record at UNC vacated(at least last season).

Regardless of the scandal, why keep a coach with that record? The support of Butch Davis is absolutely insane on UNC’s part. They have to get rid of him.

  17. Prowling Woofie 09/30/2010 at 8:10 AM #

I wonder if anyone can track the activity in Blake’s account to see if any significant cash withdrawals were made that coincide with recruiting visits ? He seems to have the potential to have been that stupid…

If a direct connection from Wichard-to-Bank-to-Blake-to-Recruits were drawn, the Old Well would collapse !!!

  18. StateFans 09/30/2010 at 8:16 AM #

This is just the stuff that was uncovered and found…imagine what is out there that hasn’t been found?

  19. nav 09/30/2010 at 8:19 AM #

It’s 8:30am and the biggest athletics story for UNC in 50yrs has major breaking news and there is nothing on it at the N&O.com. At least WRAL has a story on it.
    Remarkable.

  20. Daily Update 09/30/2010 at 8:28 AM #

Prowling woofie: Blake had a Pro Tect company credit card. He didn’t necessarily need cash. Blake is going to be classified as a freaking agent. No university has every been caught employing an agent on their staff who is also the recruiting coordinator.

To use the same analogy used in the Mary Easley scandal, either BD knew what was going on and he is crooked, or he didn’t know and was incompetent.

Neither is a situation you want to be in.

  23. Texpack 09/30/2010 at 8:43 AM #

This is the smoking gun, the bloody glove, and the blue dress all rolled into one.

  24. tuckerdorm1983 09/30/2010 at 8:44 AM #

If the unc football program is not sanctioned for this, then I have no respect for anything anymore and my sense of moral outrage will be through the roof.

  25. Packfan28 09/30/2010 at 8:52 AM #

Alright, I had to do it. I went to THF’s blog to see their reaction. Their assessment is pretty much in line with the sentiment here, but there is always that one guy. And here he is:

“I still think you are overreacting to this Yahoo story as to any consequences for UNC beyond Austin and Blake. Actually, the Yahoo story has some holes in my mind. Blake got paid for what? Real estate deal? Transfers from Wichard’s “private bank?” What does that mean? It’s not clear to me. We get just enough info to make it look bad, but we don’t really get the answers. Blake certainly didn’t steer any players to Wichard or those players would be in the NFL right now. Calm down, take a deep breath. The end of the story makes it clear that Austin thought Balmer was paying for the motel room. It’s a mess, but intent is important here. And I still don’t see what Butch Davis has done. This doesn’t look good, and that’s the intent of Yahoo, but I think you’ve overreacted.”
