Breaking: Major money trail ties agent to ex-UNC Associate Head Coach [12:30am]

Our author team was talking amongst ourselves today and everyone was charged with being on high alert for some major news breaking because (1) a little birdie had contacted us earlier in the week with some scoop and (2) Dick Baddour was on the radio today.

If you have learned anything about the current scandal at Carolina then you must know by now that the good folks of the highest integrity in the world – the guardians of the “The Carolina Way” – only speak to the media and go on the radio right before some bad news is about to break. Thanks to Dickie today, we were prepared! Tonight, we learn why old Dickie was on his media tour today.

Full article.

Prominent NFL agent Gary Wichard and former University of North Carolina assistant football coach John Blake have engaged in multiple financial transactions since May of 2007, a four-month investigation by Yahoo! Sports has found.

Wichard and Blake are now at the center of NCAA and North Carolina Secretary of State probes, which are seeking to determine the nature and scope of alleged agent tampering involving the football program. Those investigations have also focused on Tar Heels defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who has made at least five trips that have come under scrutiny. Two of those trips included training at a California facility less than two miles from Wichard’s agency, Pro Tect Management. Yahoo! Sports has obtained a hotel receipt from one of those trips, which lists Austin’s name above Pro Tect Management, as well as an address and Marriott Rewards number belonging to an NFL marketing agent who represents two current Pro-Tect clients.

On Blake receiving money from Wichard:

But three sources said documents show the relationship between Wichard and Blake also extended into the financial realm several times over the past three years. Those instances included:

• At least six wire transfers from Wichard’s private bank – The First National Bank of Long Island – to Blake.

• A $45,000 personal loan to Blake from The First National Bank of Long Island.

• A Pro Tect Management credit card issued in Blake’s name.

We would also recommend that you take a look at SFN’s Tweets in real time from tonight that can be seen here. Some pretty awesome running commentary there.

If you have spoken to any UNC-CH fan in the last couple of months, then you obviously know by now that “everybody does it”. Of course, most of the national media cannot think of a single instance where an Associate Head Coach of a major college program was actually a runner for an agent…but, what do they know? What would Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, ESPN and Yahoo know about sports?! They just need to talk to some Carolina people and learn that ‘everybody’ has Associate Head Coaches accepting and potentially funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to players!

Just for some grounding in this topic, the following are some comments from national and local media hitting the “Twitter universe” tonight. Obviously they don’t have a clue about what they speak!

Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports: @dennisdoddcbs Reggie Bush wasn’t a USC employee. John Blake was asst. head coach on payroll — and allegedly on the take.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports: @DanWetzel Asst coach taking money from agent to steer players would be most devastating NCAA case in years. UNC..may be in huge trouble

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports: @DanWetzel They’d never do it. Plus, UNC not repeat offender. But massive sanctions? Yes RT @Andy_Staples @DanWetzel Can you say Death Penalty?

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated: @Andy_Staples North Carolina is about to really become a basketball school — because it may not have a football program after this http://is.gd/fBnLf

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated: @Andy_Staples Can you say Death Penalty?

Pat Forde of ESPN: @espn4d: Yahoo story pounds some very detailed nails into North Carolina’s football coffin: http://tinyurl.com/26k9x2q

Synrgy Sports: @SynrgySports: NEVER been a case..where an Associate Head Coach of a major D1 football prgrm has been proven to be on an agent’s payroll.

It should be pointed out that just today at the Raleigh Sports Club speech, Dick Baddour said “the integrity of UNC is paramount.”  (Link) That “integrity” crap has been a running theme from the  “leadership” over there.  According to UNC-CH, Blake “resigned” in August because he was a “distraction” and, according to Butch, Marvin Austin is working his way back onto the team.  Are they still standing by those ridiculous staetments?   That is some super integrity they are showing over there!

Given tonight’s news, you have to wonder if the time hasn’t come that some actual adults will be forced to take over the process in Chapel Hill.

SFN will have more coverage and analysis of these major developments. In the meantime, we turn your attention to another reason why you should be leveraging our message boards – this post from February of this year titled “Black Santa accused of paying recruits in Chapel Hill”. NO!?

The banner add on the yahoo story is for lawyers.com…

The “wallet” tweet was from a DC/MD high school football coach named Ed Shields but it wasn’t Marvin’s HS coach that was mentioned in the article. Posted on May 11th which I think was right before one of Marvin’s big Miami trips.

“Marvin I will bring the wallets to u today@ANCHORMANAUSTIN”

ruffles don’t forget the posters at PP dropping some nuggets. They deserve major props.

so in effect, a business relationship was established between a sports agency and the University of North Carolina. let’s see, we have a sports agent acting as a coach (Blake), and you have the University of North Carolina (represented by Blake) serving as an employee of a sports agency. absolutely beautiful.

  6. Old MacDonald 09/29/2010 at 11:02 PM #

So are they still saying that Blake “resigned” because he was a “distraction” and that Marvin is working his way back onto the team? Were these statements examples of UNC-CH’s self-proclaimed honesty during this process.

  7. Old MacDonald 09/29/2010 at 11:03 PM #

Jeremy: and you had Marvin (a player on scholarship) working directly for the sports agency directly.

  8. Wufpacker 09/29/2010 at 11:05 PM #

^^^ You also have a “student athlete” (snicker) on scholarship who is likely acting as an agent/runner for the same agency from whom the coach is receiving wire transfers.

Throw in the flat out denial by Wichard, which has now been blown out of the water, and you’ve got a real slimy cast of characters within the Carolina football program.

I sure wish this would have come out at 11AM today, rather than 11PM. Can you imagine the scene at the RSC had this been the case? Dickie B would have been as pale as a ghost.

  10. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 11:06 PM #

Vawolf: Ed Fields, local HS coach and head of the Prince George County football association tweeted that he was going to bring the wallets to MA a day or so before one of MA’s trips to South Beach.

You could probably investigate this stuff for 5 years and not find everything.

  11. JeremyH 09/29/2010 at 11:11 PM #

So what exactly is Marvin doing to earn his paychecks (prizes?) with Pro Tect Management? Is it recruiting other players for them? By the way, no direct tie with Hawkins and Wichard yet? I can’t help but speculate that Hawkins also moonlights as a caterer.

  12. TheCOWDOG 09/29/2010 at 11:12 PM #

Gravely is running with it right now.

  13. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 11:13 PM #

Baddour looks like a real idiot now. He said the agents look like students.

Does John Blake look like a student? They all need to just STFU. When will they learn?

They just showed clips of Baddour laughing and making jokes about it.

  14. blpack 09/29/2010 at 11:13 PM #

Wonder when the NCAA will get to basketball? I’ve got time to wait. Many prongs there too. MA, ProTect employee, has apparently costs UNC-cheat some games the last few years.
Won’t the NCAA just laugh at Baddour on Friday? Suspensions upheld.

  15. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 11:15 PM #

“The sources said Austin’s airfare for the trips – taken in March and July of 2009 – was paid by Todd Amos, Austin’s assistant coach at Ballou Senior High School in Washington, D.C.”

Sorry. It was an assistant at MA’s HS that paid for the flights.

  16. LRM 09/29/2010 at 11:16 PM #

Did anyone else notice that Baddour is making a big joke of all this? Think that’s intentional?

  17. TAEdisonHokie 09/29/2010 at 11:17 PM #

    Boom goes the dynamite!

Just goes to show that if nothing’s been reported for a few days doesn’t mean that nothing’s happening behind the scenes.

  18. wolfonthehill 09/29/2010 at 11:17 PM #

Gravely even finished with the statement that, if Austin was indeed in on the action prior to his junior year, he’d be ineligible for the year & they’d have to vacate all wins for the season.

    Excellent…

  19. El Scrotcho 09/29/2010 at 11:31 PM #

So one of the guys involved with this mess at Pro Tect is the agent for C.J. Spiller? Wonder how that relationship got established?

I’m sure that’s the last thing a Clemson fan wants to see in there.

  20. LRM 09/29/2010 at 11:38 PM #

Baddour’s tone reinforces most Carolina fans’ basic presumption: this is no big deal, just a bunch of State fans overreacting and making up lies. Just laugh it off.

  21. Old MacDonald 09/29/2010 at 11:47 PM #

I hope they keep laughing. They are doing so well.

Hey, we may have to add another set of temporary bleachers for Saturday just to hold all the recruits who will see this news and decide against going to the UNC-CH v. ECU game.

  22. Wufpacker 09/29/2010 at 11:48 PM #

I wondered the same thing re: Spiller/Clemson

  23. turfpack 09/30/2010 at 12:02 AM #

  24. Old MacDonald 09/30/2010 at 12:18 AM #

Anyone want to bet how their appeal Friday will go?

  25. StateFans 09/30/2010 at 12:24 AM #

People seem to forgotten that we’ve already established that Carolina played with TWO ineligible players in the 2009 season.

    http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2010/08/10/uh-o-did-carolina-go-0-12-in-2009/

Those wins were already on their way to being vacated.
